00:04:47.820 --> 00:04:52.600 And this particular course was entitled Conversion and Transformation. 00:04:52.600 --> 00:05:03.040 One of the assignments of that course was to write an essay about my own conversion and transformation and ongoing spiritual development. 00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:11.360 In doing some research for the essay, I came across a simple but profound statement in one of the required textbooks. 00:05:11.360 --> 00:05:16.680 In that book, a church historian called Alan Crater wrote, 00:05:17.280 --> 00:05:24.980 Conversion to Christianity involves a change of a person's belief, belonging, and behavior. 00:05:25.780 --> 00:05:28.180 The phrase really stuck with me. 00:05:28.600 --> 00:05:35.860 Conversion to Christianity involves a change in a person's belief, belonging, and behavior. 00:05:35.860 --> 00:05:43.139 You know, in many ways, the book of Acts, certainly the second part of the book of Acts, 00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:50.060 could read like an extended reflection on the conversion and transformation of Saul of Tarsus. 00:05:50.759 --> 00:05:59.340 Throughout Luke's narrative, it's abundantly clear that Saul's conversion involved a massive change for him 00:05:59.340 --> 00:06:03.639 in his belief, in his belonging, and in his behavior. 00:06:03.639 --> 00:06:13.319 And so here in Acts 9, 19-31, we discover what happened to Paul after his extraordinary conversion on the Damascus Road, 00:06:13.500 --> 00:06:15.479 his encounter with the risen Christ. 00:06:16.500 --> 00:06:20.979 Saul's conversion itself, I take it, was not really typical. 00:06:22.159 --> 00:06:28.199 People do not normally fall to the ground, are blinded by a blazing light, 00:06:28.199 --> 00:06:35.620 and hear the audible voice of the risen Lord Jesus as part of the conversion experience. 00:06:36.759 --> 00:06:41.740 But what happened afterwards is typical, or ought to be typical, 00:06:42.159 --> 00:06:45.860 of genuine Christian conversion and transformation. 00:06:47.199 --> 00:06:51.680 Kevin last week dealt with Saul's conversion on the Damascus Road. 00:06:51.680 --> 00:06:53.740 He had the five Ps, remember? 00:06:54.439 --> 00:06:56.019 Today I've got the three Bs. 00:06:57.500 --> 00:07:02.860 But he talked about how God deeply changes us when we know Christ. 00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:08.579 And today, we're going to be looking at what does a transformed life really look like? 00:07:08.800 --> 00:07:10.199 What does it mean to be a Christian? 00:07:10.500 --> 00:07:13.899 What are the principles from Paul's post-conversion experience, 00:07:14.460 --> 00:07:18.500 his story, that apply to each one of us who say that we're Christians? 00:07:18.500 --> 00:07:26.339 Let's find out how belief, belonging, and behavior are changed, are reshaped. 00:07:26.759 --> 00:07:29.220 Because we belong to Jesus, we say we're Christians. 00:07:30.439 --> 00:07:34.720 But first of all, a little bit of the background of this story from Acts 9. 00:07:35.860 --> 00:07:39.759 We should note that Luke actually compresses the story, the timeline. 00:07:40.319 --> 00:07:45.620 He uses phrases like several days in verse 19, or after many days in verse 23. 00:07:45.779 --> 00:07:47.279 But he doesn't give exact dates. 00:07:47.279 --> 00:07:49.299 He doesn't say how long this period lasts for. 00:07:49.959 --> 00:07:54.959 But two of Paul's other writings, in Galatians and in 2 Corinthians, 00:07:55.199 --> 00:07:57.299 we get little glimpses of the same story. 00:07:57.439 --> 00:08:00.279 And we can put it all together to fill the chronological gaps. 00:08:01.319 --> 00:08:04.579 We might also note that we're talking about Saul of Tarsus. 00:08:04.799 --> 00:08:08.559 That's who Luke refers to him as in this passage. 00:08:08.719 --> 00:08:10.799 Up to about chapter 13 in Acts. 00:08:10.919 --> 00:08:12.839 And then after that, he becomes Paul. 00:08:13.419 --> 00:08:14.319 Paul the Apostle. 00:08:14.319 --> 00:08:17.480 Paul was his Roman name, of course, and Saul was his Hebrew name. 00:08:17.639 --> 00:08:18.740 And it's the same person. 00:08:18.860 --> 00:08:23.339 And I might swap and change the names around a little bit, depending on context, 00:08:23.599 --> 00:08:26.500 as we talk about Saul this morning. 00:08:26.899 --> 00:08:29.139 Let's piece it together initially from Acts. 00:08:29.939 --> 00:08:35.340 After his conversion, Saul stayed several days with the disciples in Damascus. 00:08:35.340 --> 00:08:41.540 And then, he started preaching in the synagogues where the Jews met for worship. 00:08:42.000 --> 00:08:45.240 He proclaimed that Jesus is the Son of God. 00:08:45.399 --> 00:08:46.340 That was his message. 00:08:46.540 --> 00:08:47.759 Jesus is the Son of God. 00:08:47.820 --> 00:08:48.440 Verse 20. 00:08:48.940 --> 00:08:52.920 And as time passed, his arguments grew increasingly powerful. 00:08:53.920 --> 00:08:57.120 And he proved that Jesus was the Messiah. 00:08:57.660 --> 00:08:59.379 So Jesus is the Son of God. 00:08:59.800 --> 00:09:00.900 Jesus is the Messiah. 00:09:00.899 --> 00:09:02.379 That's what Paul was doing. 00:09:03.539 --> 00:09:09.379 And eventually, after some period of time, the opposition against him by the Jews in Damascus 00:09:09.379 --> 00:09:15.199 reached such a crescendo that some of his friends had to help him escape through a hole in the wall. 00:09:15.319 --> 00:09:17.539 And he left Damascus and went to Jerusalem. 00:09:19.139 --> 00:09:22.399 Luke then tells us that, yeah, he went to Jerusalem. 00:09:22.720 --> 00:09:25.980 And there he attempted to join the Christians in Jerusalem. 00:09:25.980 --> 00:09:28.779 But remember, Paul had left Jerusalem sometime before. 00:09:28.980 --> 00:09:30.440 And he was persecuting the Christians. 00:09:30.519 --> 00:09:31.680 So they were a bit afraid of him. 00:09:31.740 --> 00:09:32.460 Was this a trap? 00:09:33.259 --> 00:09:34.779 Who's Jerusalem, Saul met with Cephas. 00:10:04.699 --> 00:10:05.319 That's Peter. 00:10:05.899 --> 00:10:08.479 He met with James, the brother of the Lord Jesus. 00:10:09.219 --> 00:10:11.259 I'd love to have heard those conversations. 00:10:11.459 --> 00:10:13.819 Can you just imagine what they sat down and chatted about? 00:10:15.839 --> 00:10:19.799 And he was welcomed into the community. 00:10:19.799 --> 00:10:25.519 But actually, it's from a passage in Galatians that we get the chronology here. 00:10:26.259 --> 00:10:27.679 And so this is what it says. 00:10:28.139 --> 00:10:35.179 Then after three years, I went to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Cephas and stayed with him 15 days. 00:10:36.319 --> 00:10:37.579 So it's pretty obvious. 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:45.339 Three years, he had been north in Damascus or the general vicinity. 00:10:45.340 --> 00:10:48.800 But his time in Jerusalem only lasted two days. 00:10:49.320 --> 00:10:54.820 And during those two weeks in Jerusalem, Saul again spoke boldly in the name of Jesus. 00:10:55.399 --> 00:10:58.780 And he debated with the Hellenistic or Greek-speaking Jews in Jerusalem. 00:11:00.240 --> 00:11:02.800 Again, opposition against him intensified. 00:11:03.740 --> 00:11:05.220 There was another plot to kill him. 00:11:05.300 --> 00:11:07.980 That's the second plot now, Damascus and now Jerusalem. 00:11:07.980 --> 00:11:16.840 And so the Christians in Jerusalem escorted him to Caesarea on the coast where he got a ship and sailed to his hometown, 00:11:17.539 --> 00:11:23.360 which of course was Tarsus in the province of Cilicia in modern-day Turkey. 00:11:23.360 --> 00:11:29.500 It's also from Galatians that we learn that during those years, we don't get it from Luke in Acts, 00:11:29.639 --> 00:11:39.560 but Galatians tells us that during his time in Damascus, he spent time, an unspecified amount of time, in Arabia. 00:11:40.279 --> 00:11:42.720 By Arabia, he means the Nabataean kingdom. 00:11:43.759 --> 00:11:47.360 And that would be modern-day Jordan and its surrounding regions. 00:11:47.360 --> 00:11:52.639 Perhaps Petra is the best-known ancient Nabataean city today. 00:11:53.759 --> 00:12:01.460 And Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians, so this is piecing it all together, Acts, Galatians 1, 2 Corinthians 11, 00:12:01.940 --> 00:12:09.500 that he was escaping Damascus from the governor of King Aratas, who was the Nabataean or Arabian king. 00:12:10.000 --> 00:12:16.960 So putting it together, Paul had upset the Jews in Damascus by preaching that Jesus is the Messiah, 00:12:16.960 --> 00:12:22.019 Jesus is the Son of God, and he must have upset the Nabataeans in Arabia somehow as well, 00:12:22.080 --> 00:12:25.400 because they were chasing him, and they were trying to capture him in Damascus. 00:12:25.660 --> 00:12:32.639 So that's when he escaped from Damascus, went to Jerusalem, and spent two weeks in Jerusalem. 00:12:32.700 --> 00:12:37.879 This map that will appear on the screen shows us basically what happened. 00:12:38.420 --> 00:12:44.340 Jerusalem to Damascus, that's with the letters, to persecute the Christians in Damascus, 00:12:44.340 --> 00:12:50.399 to capture them, imprison them, bring them back, and maybe even kill them in Jerusalem. 00:12:51.899 --> 00:12:57.259 He became a Christian on the road to Damascus, stayed with the Christians there, 00:12:57.840 --> 00:13:00.460 went to Arabia, came back to Damascus. 00:13:00.540 --> 00:13:02.180 That period of time was three years. 00:13:02.560 --> 00:13:06.060 Went to Jerusalem, spent a couple of weeks there, and then eventually, 00:13:06.059 --> 00:13:11.159 well, not eventually, after two weeks, he's chased out of Jerusalem again, 00:13:11.619 --> 00:13:20.919 goes to Tarsus through Caesarea, and then it's about another 14 years probably before he went back to Jerusalem. 00:13:21.299 --> 00:13:22.679 So that's the chronology. 00:13:22.899 --> 00:13:27.079 That gives us a little bit of the background story. 00:13:27.279 --> 00:13:32.579 But our focus this morning is to look at Saul's example of conversion and transformation. 00:13:32.580 --> 00:13:37.000 There's an overarching principle here, that to be a true Christian, 00:13:37.680 --> 00:13:46.460 there must be a change in our lives, a change in our beliefs, a change in our belonging, 00:13:47.080 --> 00:13:49.480 and a change in our behavior. 00:13:50.860 --> 00:13:53.000 So we look at belief, first of all. 00:13:54.700 --> 00:13:57.800 Saul of Tarsus was a zealous Pharisee. 00:13:57.799 --> 00:14:02.740 He would have won the gold medal for being a zealot Jew, 00:14:03.339 --> 00:14:09.019 Orthodox Jew, and as a member of the Pharisees. 00:14:09.459 --> 00:14:12.459 He regarded Christianity as a dangerous heresy. 00:14:14.319 --> 00:14:16.519 The Torah, the Jewish scriptures, 00:14:16.899 --> 00:14:19.079 with the Jewish traditions and observances, 00:14:19.500 --> 00:14:21.179 were central to his worldview. 00:14:22.339 --> 00:14:23.199 Keep obeying God. 00:14:23.319 --> 00:14:25.039 Do the commandments. 00:14:25.039 --> 00:14:31.659 Not just the Ten Commandments, but the 623 or whatever number of commandments it is in the Old Testament scriptures. 00:14:31.799 --> 00:14:34.699 Do all of those, and you'll be right with God, he believed. 00:14:35.120 --> 00:14:36.500 He thought Jesus was a fraud. 00:14:37.939 --> 00:14:44.139 A crucified Messiah was impossible in Saul's mind. 00:14:44.959 --> 00:14:50.019 I mean, who ever heard of the Messiah being crucified, being put to death? 00:14:51.219 --> 00:14:53.199 The scriptures told you that was impossible. 00:14:53.200 --> 00:14:55.879 It said that cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree. 00:14:56.220 --> 00:15:00.600 So how could Jesus of Nazareth possibly be God's anointed one? 00:15:01.580 --> 00:15:04.280 How could he die under a divine curse? 00:15:04.840 --> 00:15:05.660 It was a joke. 00:15:06.379 --> 00:15:08.920 I mean, nobody believed that your God died on a cross. 00:15:09.879 --> 00:15:15.040 Nobody believed that the one that God had appointed and anointed to be the Savior 00:15:15.039 --> 00:15:21.139 would end up crucified by Roman soldiers. 00:15:22.759 --> 00:15:29.480 Yet in Damascus, after his conversion, Saul began preaching that Jesus is the Son of God 00:15:29.480 --> 00:15:31.319 and the Messiah. 00:15:32.779 --> 00:15:34.980 Saul's beliefs had changed. 00:15:36.279 --> 00:15:39.539 Saul, along with all the other Jews, had expected a Messiah. 00:15:39.539 --> 00:15:42.959 He knew what the Messiah ought to look like, he thought. 00:15:43.500 --> 00:15:51.319 He would be a figure of hope, a political liberator for the Jews, a son of David, a king chosen by God 00:15:51.319 --> 00:15:59.939 who would rule in righteousness and a peaceful kingdom with the Jews elevated once again throughout the world. 00:15:59.939 --> 00:16:05.779 He would inaugurate that kingdom of justice and prosperity and harmony, 00:16:05.779 --> 00:16:08.319 and the hated Roman occupiers would be gone. 00:16:09.579 --> 00:16:11.419 They looked for the Lion of Judah. 00:16:12.419 --> 00:16:13.579 And who did they get? 00:16:14.179 --> 00:16:15.360 They got a slain lamb. 00:16:17.019 --> 00:16:23.980 They expected the kingdom to be established by violence and force and power. 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:29.759 Instead, it was established through self-sacrificial love. 00:16:29.759 --> 00:16:36.279 They expected salvation, God's salvation, to be for the 00:16:50.899 --> 00:16:52.439 Why did his beliefs change? 00:16:52.860 --> 00:16:55.740 On the Damascus road, Saul encountered the risen Christ. 00:16:55.740 --> 00:17:02.639 He became convinced that the crucified Jesus had been vindicated by God through the resurrection. 00:17:03.580 --> 00:17:09.539 The very fact that disqualified Christ or Jesus in Saul's mind, his crucifixion, 00:17:10.019 --> Bruce says, 00:17:19.500 --> 00:17:24.859 Paul found himself instantly compelled by what he saw and heard. 00:17:25.460 --> 00:17:31.660 To acknowledge that Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified one, was alive after his crucifixion, 00:17:32.559 --> 00:17:35.299 vindicated and exalted by God, 00:17:35.859 --> 00:17:39.740 and was now conscripting him, Saul, into his service. 00:17:40.380 --> 00:17:42.200 What a radical change. 00:17:42.819 --> 00:17:45.759 What a transformation had happened. 00:17:45.759 --> 00:17:51.879 Years later, Paul puts it together when he wrote one of his letters to the believers, 00:17:52.019 --> 00:17:53.420 the Christian believers in Corinthians, 00:17:53.759 --> 00:17:54.619 and he said, 00:17:55.019 --> 00:17:58.559 this is the core of the Christian gospel. 00:17:59.319 --> 00:18:01.960 Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures. 00:18:02.920 --> 00:18:03.839 He was buried. 00:18:04.759 --> 00:18:06.720 He was raised on the third day. 00:18:06.900 --> 00:18:09.980 And he appeared to many witnesses, 500 at one time. 00:18:10.279 --> 00:18:11.259 He appeared to Peter. 00:18:11.400 --> 00:18:12.400 He appeared to James. 00:18:12.400 --> 00:18:13.880 And Paul says, 00:18:14.200 --> 00:18:16.140 he even appeared to me. 00:18:17.040 --> 00:18:19.300 I have seen the risen Lord Jesus. 00:18:20.160 --> 00:18:22.360 My beliefs have changed entirely. 00:18:23.259 --> 00:18:25.519 This is the message, Paul said, 00:18:25.800 --> 00:18:27.780 and it's of first importance. 00:18:28.240 --> 00:18:32.519 Conversion involves a radical reorientation of belief. 00:18:33.560 --> 00:18:37.400 For Saul, it meant accepting that the crucified one was now the risen Lord. 00:18:38.240 --> 00:18:41.880 That salvation comes not through Torah keeping. 00:18:41.880 --> 00:18:44.340 Not through all those laws, 00:18:44.960 --> 00:18:49.020 but through Christ's atoning substitutionary death on the cross. 00:18:49.980 --> 00:18:52.580 That had heard from a child growing up, 00:18:59.740 --> 00:19:02.840 everything is fulfilled in Jesus of Nazareth, 00:19:03.200 --> 00:19:05.280 the Christ, the Son of God. 00:19:05.279 --> 00:19:09.319
