looking here about overcoming discrimination, overcoming injustice. 00:00:54.079 --> 00:01:03.359 You know, because you know what, no matter what happens in life, there's going to be injustices that happen. 00:01:04.560 --> 00:01:08.939 You know, one of the problems that we have today is people think, well, there should never be any injustice. 00:01:09.179 --> 00:01:13.000 Well, that's a good thought, but that's not a reality of how we live. 00:01:14.060 --> 00:01:17.099 That's not the way things really play out in real life. 00:01:17.099 --> 00:01:23.879 You know, it's a grand thought, but those things in this life are not going to happen. 00:01:24.099 --> 00:01:32.519 And we're going to see here this morning, we're going to talk about a place that the Bible gives us some ways of dealing with injustice, 00:01:32.719 --> 00:01:39.539 with dealing with discrimination and dealing with those things where we say, oftentimes people say it this way today, 00:01:39.879 --> 00:01:40.859 it's not what? 00:01:41.739 --> 00:01:42.219 Fair. 00:01:43.979 --> 00:01:45.959 You know, how many times have you heard, it's not fair. 00:01:45.959 --> 00:01:46.699 What are they saying? 00:01:46.700 --> 00:01:49.780 This isn't just in what I want. 00:01:50.439 --> 00:01:52.020 This isn't what I desired. 00:01:52.140 --> 00:01:57.379 And we know these are the realities of the things of life. 00:01:57.540 --> 00:02:01.780 And so if you found Exodus chapter two this morning, we're going to read a few verses here. 00:02:02.359 --> 00:02:08.659 And as we get started this morning, because I think here in Exodus, you can definitely understand there was some injustices. 00:02:09.159 --> 00:02:11.819 There was some discrimination that was taking place. 00:02:11.819 --> 00:02:19.639 And we see here that the reality of this, if you look here in verse one, in Exodus chapter two, it says, 00:02:19.639 --> 00:02:24.339 And there went a man to the house of Levi and took to wife a daughter of Levi. 00:02:24.340 --> 00:02:27.099 And the woman conceived and bear a son. 00:02:27.099 --> 00:02:32.620 And when she saw that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months and she could no longer hide him. 00:02:32.620 --> 00:02:38.520 She took him for an ark of bulrushes and dabbed it with slime with the pitch and put the child therein. 00:02:38.900 --> 00:02:41.800 things aren't going the way we think it ought to go. 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:08.939 Lord, it's not going the way that we would desire it to go. 00:04:09.020 --> 00:04:10.480 But Lord, we can trust you 00:04:40.199 --> 00:04:41.860 to get a fair shot in life, you know. 00:04:42.099 --> 00:04:44.500 Every mom wants to see their kids succeed. 00:04:45.279 --> 00:04:46.740 You know, it's kind of an innate thing. 00:04:46.800 --> 00:04:49.819 And we're going to see here about Jochebed here, 00:04:50.019 --> 00:04:52.800 Moses' mom, was no different. 00:04:53.219 --> 00:04:54.939 And what makes her story 00:04:54.939 --> 00:04:57.459 is such an example of resilience. 00:04:58.079 --> 00:04:59.699 Because I want you to understand, 00:04:59.839 --> 00:05:03.519 she was not overcome with the evil around her. 00:05:03.519 --> 00:05:06.240 You know, it's easy sometimes to, 00:05:06.599 --> 00:05:09.079 just to give up about the evil around you 00:05:09.079 --> 00:05:10.699 that's taking place. 00:05:10.719 --> 00:05:12.279 And we're going to see here this morning 00:05:12.279 --> 00:05:15.599 that here Jochebed was personally, 00:05:15.759 --> 00:05:18.199 she had experienced discrimination 00:05:18.199 --> 00:05:21.779 and her family was faced with it in the extreme. 00:05:21.979 --> 00:05:23.979 When it's extreme, they try to kill people. 00:05:25.259 --> 00:05:27.079 You know, and we see that today. 00:05:27.159 --> 00:05:30.620 You know, we see genocides trying to take place. 00:05:30.639 --> 00:05:32.279 And that's another overused word, 00:05:32.279 --> 00:05:35.299 but really genocide is just wanting to wipe out 00:05:35.299 --> 00:05:37.899 a people based on just who they are. 00:05:38.899 --> 00:05:40.719 You know, and genocide can mean everything 00:05:40.719 --> 00:05:43.979 from national origin to belief systems. 00:05:44.859 --> 00:05:45.939 You know, I want you to understand, 00:05:46.099 --> 00:05:47.919 there's that happening all over. 00:05:48.739 --> 00:05:50.599 You know, we find that this dynamic 00:05:50.599 --> 00:05:52.159 has happened throughout history. 00:05:52.519 --> 00:05:54.459 It's not something new to us, 00:05:54.459 --> 00:05:58.219 but when we come under this injustice 00:05:58.219 --> 00:06:00.399 in our life, 00:06:00.500 --> 00:06:03.359 we can succumb to that. 00:06:03.579 --> 00:06:05.099 And oftentimes what happens is 00:06:05.099 --> 00:06:07.500 people become hate-filled and bitter 00:06:07.500 --> 00:06:10.199 because things didn't happen 00:06:10.199 --> 00:06:12.719 or do the way they thought they wanted it to go. 00:06:13.299 --> 00:06:14.979 And we see here this morning 00:06:14.979 --> 00:06:17.679 as we understand how Jochebed 00:06:17.679 --> 00:06:20.779 overcame this situation, you know. 00:06:20.779 --> 00:06:22.379 But let's give a little background 00:06:22.379 --> 00:06:25.339 because we know about Moses and the bull rush. 00:06:25.399 --> 00:06:27.919 But, you know, we need a little understanding here 00:06:27.919 --> 00:06:29.539 before we get going. 00:06:29.619 --> 00:06:31.179 Because as you remember, 00:06:31.319 --> 00:06:33.779 the Israelites first entered Egypt 00:06:33.779 --> 00:06:38.699 when Joseph allowed them to come into Canaan 00:06:38.699 --> 00:06:41.059 or to come in because of the famine 00:06:41.059 --> 00:06:42.000 that was in Canaan. 00:06:42.399 --> 00:06:43.699 And over the centuries, 00:06:43.699 --> 00:06:45.539 we find that God told Abraham 00:06:45.539 --> 00:06:48.039 that the people were going to spend 400 years there 00:06:48.040 --> 00:06:50.060 before he would bring them out. 00:06:50.160 --> 00:06:52.360 And so they began to settle in 00:06:52.360 --> 00:06:53.620 and they were God-blessed 00:06:53.620 --> 00:06:55.460 and they began to multiply. 00:06:57.160 --> 00:07:00.140 You know, and we see this population begin to grow. 00:07:00.379 --> 00:07:03.200 But the Bible tells us that a new Pharaoh 00:07:03.200 --> 00:07:05.860 came to power. 00:07:07.280 --> 00:07:09.040 One that knew not Joseph. 00:07:10.060 --> 00:07:11.939 Because, you know, the ones that knew Joseph, 00:07:12.060 --> 00:07:12.600 they knew what? 00:07:12.740 --> 00:07:14.360 Joseph had proved himself what? 00:07:14.460 --> 00:07:14.860 Loyal. 00:07:15.780 --> 00:07:17.420 They understood the loyalty. 00:07:17.420 --> 00:07:20.100 They understood that they were not a threat. 00:07:20.180 --> 00:07:20.699 But you know what? 00:07:20.780 --> 00:07:22.000 Sometimes we find here 00:07:22.000 --> 00:07:26.040 that when one grew up and knew not Joseph, 00:07:26.720 --> 00:07:29.060 he was fearful of the population. 00:07:30.020 --> 00:07:31.640 He was fearful of the Hebrews. 00:07:32.379 --> 00:07:34.439 He was fearful because of the number 00:07:34.439 --> 00:07:35.720 that they had grown to. 00:07:36.480 --> 00:07:40.340 And he became so overwhelmed by it 00:07:40.340 --> 00:07:42.200 that he became insecure. 00:07:43.080 --> 00:07:47.220 And we find here that he began to oppress the people. 00:07:47.220 --> 00:07:49.180 You know, I want you to understand 00:07:49.180 --> 00:07:51.220 something very clear here 00:07:51.220 --> 00:07:54.080 because oftentimes insecurity causes us 00:07:54.080 --> 00:07:55.320 to oppress somebody else 00:07:55.320 --> 00:07:56.740 because we're trying to keep them down. 00:07:57.780 --> 00:08:00.020 Because of our own insecurity sometimes. 00:08:00.160 --> 00:08:03.940 This leader of Egypt, the Pharaoh, 00:08:04.100 --> 00:08:06.560 knew not Joseph, knew nothing about him. 00:08:07.040 --> 00:08:08.640 And if you study Egyptian history, 00:08:08.640 --> 00:08:10.260 you'll find that there was kind of a whole 00:08:10.260 --> 00:08:13.420 coup d'etat that happened through this sequence. 00:08:13.420 --> 00:08:15.920 And we find that the Hebrews, though, 00:08:16.000 --> 00:08:19.980 just remained faithful to what they were supposed to do. 00:08:20.040 --> 00:08:23.240 But this new Pharaoh was afraid. 00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:24.439 And so what he did, he says, 00:08:24.500 --> 00:08:25.879 I'm going to keep them so busy 00:08:25.879 --> 00:08:28.540 that they don't have time to do something else. 00:08:29.540 --> 00:08:32.960 I'm going to keep them so tied up in their job 00:08:32.960 --> 00:08:33.860 and their task. 00:08:33.860 --> 00:08:35.740 And it tells us that, therefore, 00:08:35.879 --> 00:08:36.419 he set what? 00:08:37.000 --> 00:08:39.500 Taskmasters to afflict them with burdens. 00:08:39.659 --> 00:08:42.259 And they built Pharaoh's cities. 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:45.759 I mean, Pithom and Ramses were among that. 00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:49.399 We find that in Exodus chapter 1 in verse 11, 00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:52.980 that he had them begin to build these cities within Egypt. 00:08:53.539 --> 00:08:54.500 And they were busy. 00:08:54.700 --> 00:08:58.920 And the nation that had been given a home to Joseph 00:08:58.919 --> 00:09:05.419 had now changed and became an oppressor to them. 00:09:05.879 --> 00:09:08.679 And we see here, even though that Egypt survived 00:09:08.679 --> 00:09:11.799 because of the policies and things that God gave unto Joseph, 00:09:12.259 --> 00:09:14.559 they forgot the reality of that. 00:09:14.559 --> 00:09:20.199 And so we see here that Pharaoh began to increase their labor 00:09:20.199 --> 00:09:21.719 and their responsibility. 00:09:22.759 --> 00:09:25.179 You know, as we see and we look through these things, 00:09:25.179 --> 00:09:29.199 this oppressive nature that was put forth 00:09:29.199 --> 00:09:31.259 in the midst of this oppressive culture, 00:09:31.519 --> 00:09:33.039 we find a young couple. 00:09:34.399 --> 00:09:36.339 You know, oftentimes, how many times have you heard today? 00:09:36.459 --> 00:09:37.979 Well, we don't want, I hear today, 00:09:38.299 --> 00:09:40.219 young couples say, well, I don't want to get married. 00:09:40.339 --> 00:09:41.379 You know, there's so much evil. 00:09:41.500 --> 00:09:41.919 You know what? 00:09:41.959 --> 00:09:43.579 You're never going to find a time there's not evil. 00:09:43.919 --> 00:09:46.099 I want you to understand that you have to trust God 00:09:46.099 --> 00:09:47.319 in every generation. 00:09:48.059 --> 00:09:50.799 But we see Amran and Jochebed got married. 00:09:50.899 --> 00:09:52.819 They were a young couple under this oppression 00:09:52.819 --> 00:09:53.939 and decided to get married. 00:09:55.179 --> 00:09:57.959 They said, we're going to do what's right. 00:09:58.019 --> 00:10:00.779 We're going to do what God has instructed us to do. 00:10:02.599 --> 00:10:04.599 And then we're going to trust God in it. 00:10:04.739 --> 00:10:08.599 And we find that he took a wife. 00:10:10.079 --> 00:10:12.279 And we find that he was being obedient 00:10:12.279 --> 00:10:15.299 to what God had told them to do, 00:10:15.539 --> 00:10:17.379 to continue to multiply. 00:10:17.959 --> 00:10:19.299 And what we find here, 00:10:19.379 --> 00:10:23.359 that not only did Pharaoh enslave the nation of Israel, 00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:25.220 but enforced them to build his cities, 00:10:25.539 --> 00:10:27.580 he began to oppress them greatly. 00:10:28.639 --> 00:10:30.919 And then he came to the point where they kept multiplying. 00:10:31.100 --> 00:10:32.279 If you remember what he told them, 00:10:32.620 --> 00:10:36.000 he told them, look up in the chapter one there 00:10:36.000 --> 00:10:37.000 in the scripture. 00:10:37.200 --> chapter one, 00:11:21.979 --> 00:11:25.079 you know that the Hebrew midwives were like, 00:11:25.159 --> 00:11:29.799 Hey, well, the Hebrew women are too strong 00:11:30.399 --> 00:11:31.699 and they just have these babies 00:11:31.699 --> 00:11:33.659 and they're gone before we get there, you know. 00:11:34.079 --> 00:11:37.339 And Pharaoh changes into a new plan. 00:11:37.340 --> 00:11:37.920 He says, 00:11:38.000 --> 00:11:40.200 We're going to gather up all the sons when they're born 00:11:40.200 --> 00:11:41.660 and we're going to cast them into the river. 00:11:41.899 --> 00:11:43.379 Now you imagine being a mom 00:11:43.379 --> 00:11:46.940 and giving birth to a child, 00:11:47.060 --> 00:11:50.940 knowing that somebody was going to try to take him 00:11:50.940 --> 00:11:51.720 and put him in the river. 00:11:51.840 --> 00:11:53.899 Because we understood what that meant. 00:11:54.180 --> 00:11:56.300 We understood that it meant certain death. 00:11:56.399 --> 00:11:58.300 But look in verse 22, 00:11:58.440 --> 00:11:59.100 and he says this, 00:11:59.180 --> 00:12:01.240 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, 00:12:01.759 --> 00:12:02.980 Every son that was born, 00:12:03.080 --> 00:12:04.320 you shall cast into the river, 00:12:04.360 --> 00:12:06.040 and every daughter you shall save alive. 00:12:06.039 --> 00:12:09.679 Now, the implication of this is pretty broad. 00:12:10.439 --> 00:12:11.719 Because basically, it says, 00:12:11.819 --> 00:12:12.839 Pharaoh said unto the people, 00:12:12.919 --> 00:12:16.519 So if an Egyptian saw a Hebrew mom with a male child, 00:12:16.599 --> 00:12:18.599 they could take the male child and throw it in the river. 00:12:18.839 --> 00:12:22.319 It's basically a license to slaughter young children. 00:12:22.559 --> 00:12:24.000 That's about as discriminatory 00:12:24.000 --> 00:12:25.959 and about as unjust as you can get in it. 00:12:25.960 --> 00:12:27.740 This is the culture, 00:12:27.920 --> 00:12:29.120 this is the dynamic 00:12:29.120 --> 00:12:33.240 that Amron and Jacobed were faced with. 00:12:34.600 --> 00:12:37.480 But yet they were willing to trust God. 00:12:39.480 --> 00:12:43.519 You know, there was kill the children. 00:12:44.360 --> 00:12:46.280 They were targeted for death. 00:12:46.279 --> 00:12:49.659 And it was oppression and hatred 00:12:49.659 --> 00:12:53.579 that was the day in which Moses was born. 00:12:54.079 --> 00:12:56.860 You know, today we find that prejudice isn't any different. 00:12:56.959 --> 00:12:57.899 People get insecure. 00:12:58.240 --> 00:13:00.939 You find that people, for all sorts of reasons, 00:13:01.039 --> 00:13:03.579 will discriminate against others 00:13:03.579 --> 00:13:08.399 and have issues because of all sorts of different things. 00:13:08.399 --> 00:13:11.879 I mean, everything from their ethnicity 00:13:11.879 --> 00:13:15.199 to physical appearances 00:13:15.199 --> 00:13:18.699 or even levels of education. 00:13:18.959 --> 00:13:21.319 You know, there's often a move amongst people 00:13:21.319 --> 00:13:22.659 that you have this standard of, 00:13:22.899 --> 00:13:24.519 well, if you're not as educated as me, 00:13:24.600 --> 00:13:25.399 you're subbed to me. 00:13:25.439 --> 00:13:26.220 You know what that is? 00:13:26.559 --> 00:13:29.819 That's a false idea that somebody has less value 00:13:29.819 --> 00:13:32.199 because of what level of schooling 00:13:32.199 --> 00:13:33.860 or degree that they might have. 00:13:35.079 --> 00:13:35.360 You know? 00:13:35.360 --> 00:13:39.440 One of my favorite
