--> 00:01:20.960 It was written in the 80s. 00:01:20.959 --> 00:01:32.019 It was a compilation of some of the archaeological and other evidences to help support why we think the Bible is true, why 00:01:41.359 The reason why it's important for us this morning is because every time I look at that book, I feel guilty. 00:01:41.359 --> 00:01:47.840 Because that book was given to me as a freshman 00:01:53.180 --> 00:02:07.820 Not only was it loaned to me as a freshman in college by a campus ministry worker, and that I've had it on my shelf, I have worked not only with this man, but with his consider it. 00:02:57.120 --> 00:03:11.700 Though maybe not in the same extreme way, we are like Lady Macbeth, walking around, looking at our hands and thinking, the stain of what we have done is on our hands and on our hearts. 00:03:11.699 --> 00:03:41.439 And if you're wondering whether that's a universal truth, fascinatingly, a professor down at something called the Christian Counseling and Education Foundation down in Philadelphia, which is a great biblical counseling program, a guy named Ed Welch, has his classes do an exercise every year where they go out and they just talk to someone. 00:03:41.439 --> 00:03:48.639 Anyone, anyone, family members, Christian, non-Christian, church, non-church, do you struggle with feeling guilty in your life? 00:03:50.120 --> 00:03:51.060 And do you know what he said? 00:03:51.520 --> 00:03:57.960 85 percent, 85 percent of the people that his students talk to feel guilty. 00:03:59.740 --> 00:04:02.099 There are different kinds of guilt to be sure. 00:04:02.719 --> 00:04:09.800 Sometimes there are guilt that's true because we know God and we know what he has said and we have disobeyed him. 00:04:09.800 --> 00:04:23.360 There is also a guilt that we can sometimes feel when we have been a victim, when we have been the recipient of someone else's sin and yet it makes us feel dirty and we feel guilty about it. 00:04:23.360 --> 00:04:33.960 There's a kind of guilt that we sometimes feel when we have disappointed someone else, whether what we've done is right or wrong. 00:04:33.959 --> 00:04:49.639 And there's a kind of guilt that we feel simply because we're human and we haven't been able to save all the problems of global hunger and the threat of nuclear war and sex trafficking and on and on and on. 00:04:49.740 --> 00:04:55.039 That we haven't been able to solve all the problems of the world or maybe just in a smaller sense. 00:04:55.040 --> 00:05:03.980 There are times when we haven't been able to be the human being we ideally would want to be because of our own human limitations. 00:05:06.160 --> 00:05:09.500 So there's guilt that we feel and some of it is more legitimate. 00:05:10.100 --> 00:05:11.740 someone is going to do a thorough background check, they were going to talk to all of your known associates, they were going to talk to your family members, they were going to talk to your high school boyfriends and girlfriends, they were going to talk to your elementary school pals who you ran around the woods with, or whatever it is. 00:06:12.740 --> 00:06:15.159 They were going to comb through your life. 00:06:16.899 --> 00:06:18.759 Would you be afraid of what they would find out? 00:06:18.759 --> 00:06:29.379 What if not only could they talk to everyone, but they had been spying on you so 00:07:18.560 The writer of Hebrews has been building an argument for a while about the greatness of Christ. 00:07:18.759 --> 00:07:28.680 And here in chapter 9, we come to a great piece of news about Hebrews chapter 9. 00:07:41.180 --> 00:07:50.220 We're going to be looking at verses 11 through 14 this morning, but it's really a follow-up to verses 1 through 10 that Greg preached on last week. 00:07:50.220 --> 00:07:55.980 So I'm going to read chapter 9, 1 through 14, so we can see where we are going. 00:07:55.980 --> 00:08:05.060 Now, even the first covenant had regulations for worships and an earthly place of holiness. 00:08:05.060 --> 00:08:12.020 For the tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the presence. 00:08:12.540 --> of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, 00:08:23.560 --> 00:08:30.460 in which was a golden urn holding the manna and Aaron's staff that budded and the tablets of the 00:11:31.819 --> 00:11:35.360 verses 1 through 10 of chapter 9 have set up the antithesis, 00:11:35.500 --> 00:11:38.620 the old ways of God's revelation, 00:11:38.620 --> 00:11:41.679 how he had said this is in the old covenant, how it was going to work. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:47.460 And then in verse 11 and following, we finally see him come to the new way. 00:11:47.539 --> 00:11:50.740 And he said, this is Christ's work for you. 00:11:52.060 --> 00:11:56.820 And in fact, as you look at it, you see that verses 11 and 12 are introductory in some ways 00:11:56.820 --> 00:11:59.580 to the whole rest of chapter 9. 00:11:59.960 --> 00:12:05.620 The richness of the vocabulary pulls the threads from the different sections 00:12:05.620 --> 00:12:10.580 of actually even looking back to 00:12:32.740 And then 13 and 14 describe the effect of what Christ has done in a very particular 00:12:32.740 --> 00:12:37.959 and powerful way for us as we think about the problem of guilt in our lives. 00:12:38.799 --> 00:12:41.719 And so, what we're going to do is we're going to look at this. 00:12:41.799 --> 00:12:45.679 We're going to look first at the context of Christ's work. 00:12:45.799 --> 00:12:49.359 Then we're going to look at the crux of the center of Christ's work. 00:12:49.439 --> 00:12:53.799 And then we're going to look at the cleansing consequence of Christ's last week. 00:13:10.579 --> 00:13:15.959 He pointed out how the tabernacle was a part of a broader theology about access to God 00:13:15.959 --> 00:13:22.000 and living in fellowship with God and enjoying life that comes from God 00:13:22.000 --> 00:13:26.799 that starts all the way back before the earthly tabernacle in the desert. 00:13:26.960 --> 00:13:31.879 It starts all the way back in the Garden of Eden and extends all the way to the new heavens 00:13:31.879 --> 00:13:33.100 and the new earth in Revelation. 00:13:33.539 --> 00:13:35.519 And what a glorious picture it was. 00:13:35.679 --> 00:13:41.139 But, just in case you don't remember, verses 1 through 10 are meant to say 00:13:41.139 --> 00:13:47.000 that the earthly tabernacle that God instructed Moses and the Israelites in the Old Testament 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:51.620 to put up was not the end goal. 00:13:51.720 --> 00:13:57.120 And it was never able to bring us into that fellowship with God. 00:13:57.220 --> 00:14:04.980 In fact, its whole point was rather to expose our need and to expose our weakness. 00:14:05.860 --> 00:14:08.279 Do you remember how it said, verses 1 through 5? 00:14:08.440 --> 00:14:09.820 There are these two sections. 00:14:09.940 --> 00:14:11.840 A first section and a second section. 00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:19.759 And the reason why there are sections is because God needed to teach the people 00:14:19.759 --> 00:14:26.660 that you cannot just walk up to the holy God of the universe with impunity. 00:14:27.180 --> 00:14:29.060 That you cannot approach Him. 00:14:29.320 --> 00:14:31.360 He is like a consuming fire. 00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:38.120 And if you come to Him with impurity, you will face the fire of His judgment. 00:14:38.120 --> 00:14:41.840 And that's the whole point of the tabernacle. 00:14:42.179 --> 00:14:44.179 That's the whole point of the sacrifices. 00:14:44.879 --> 00:14:52.560 Sacrifices were offered again and again to remind the people of the severity of their sin. 00:14:53.179 --> 00:14:56.560 That they could not blithely walk into the presence of God. 00:14:56.659 --> 00:15:01.820 But they had to deal with the one hand, and so we love pulp fiction. 00:15:35.200 --> 00:15:41.020 And yet on the other hand, we think it's gross and has no place in religion. 00:15:41.820 --> 00:15:43.280 That that's an old idea. that I want you to see is that the tabernacle was given as a gracious teaching tool. 00:16:55.840 --> 00:16:58.519 Because God knows that we wouldn't get this on our own. 00:16:59.039 --> 00:17:01.199 God knows that we wouldn't just figure it out. 00:17:01.200 --> 00:17:09.440 And so God gives us this tabernacle to teach us, to show us, to prepare us for how he would then come. 00:17:10.380 -->
