So as they came away from Jerusalem, returning to their homes. 00:01:05.599 --> 00:01:13.439 I would like to imagine that these were psalms that they're not only sung as they were going to worship, people then, that we are fully dependent on God for all things. 00:02:06.060 --> 00:02:10.819 Someone once put it like this, looking at this psalm. 00:02:11.640 --> 00:02:18.520 He said, our lives are pointless, restless and fruitless apart from God. 00:02:18.520 --> 00:02:27.660 Because when you look at this psalm, it almost seems like it's different views just pushed together in some ways. 00:02:28.200 --> 00:02:32.860 It's talking about the building of the house at the start, the watchmen. 00:02:33.700 --> 00:02:41.719 Then it seems to just take a change of direction towards the end of verse 3 onwards when it talks about children and God's heritage. 00:02:42.379 --> 00:02:47.340 You almost think to yourself, the thing that doesn't seem connected up, doesn't seem joined up. 00:02:47.340 --> 00:02:54.879 But yet if you put yourself into the situation of the people as they were making their way up to Jerusalem, 00:02:55.699 --> 00:03:00.800 as they were reflecting on God's goodness to them in so many different ways in life, 00:03:00.840 --> 00:03:05.400 you actually find that this psalm ties into life as a whole. 00:03:06.240 --> 00:03:10.539 It speaks about three important aspects of life. 00:03:11.360 --> 00:03:16.759 Aspects of life that they would be singing about going up to Jerusalem and singing about coming away. 00:03:17.340 --> 00:03:22.120 From Jerusalem, a dependence on the Lord for all things. 00:03:22.900 --> 00:03:30.140 So when you look through this psalm, you see three aspects of life that the psalm speaks about is building a house, 00:03:31.319 --> 00:03:34.599 protecting a city and rearing a family. 00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:40.340 Now this would have been a pilgrimage of the people going up to Jerusalem. 00:03:40.340 --> 00:03:46.700 There would have been parents, grandparents, children, all making their way up to Jerusalem. 00:03:47.180 --> 00:03:50.560 So it was very much a family occasion. 00:03:51.400 --> Looking at the walls that surrounded Jerusalem, the security that that offered and how the Lord offers protection to his people. 00:04:08.339 --> 00:04:12.519 How the Lord gives them a home, gives them a family. 00:04:13.179 --> 00:04:17.379 So the psalm may seem a little disjointed at first in our eyes. 00:04:17.419 --> 00:04:25.699 But as you think of the people going up to Jerusalem, it's very much a psalm that covers every aspect of life. 00:04:25.699 --> 00:04:31.560 And so as they were going up to Jerusalem, they're reflecting on these things. 00:04:32.379 --> 00:04:40.620 And coming to the conclusion in it all, that whether it's the family life, the home, the city, whatever is going on in life, 00:04:41.139 --> 00:04:45.719 the conclusion is that without the Lord, it's all in vain. 00:04:45.720 --> 00:04:56.840 You see that in verse 2, how it speaks about in vain you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil. 00:04:57.100 --> 00:05:00.900 It's in vain, apart from the Lord. 00:05:01.320 --> 00:05:11.760 And so the people are making their way to Jerusalem, a time of reflection, reflecting on God's activity in their lives and in their 00:10:32.759 God has a plan. 00:10:32.840 --> 00:10:34.720 And here we see it again. 00:10:35.180 --> 00:10:40.860 And the plan in this psalm that he's speaking of is that his house will be built. 00:11:04.879 --> 00:11:14.120 In 2 Samuel chapter 7, David goes to the Lord and says, I want to build you a house. 00:11:15.240 --> 00:11:20.080 But the Lord says to David, you're not going to build me a house. 00:11:20.580 --> 00:11:23.299 I'm going to build you a house. 00:11:23.299 --> 00:11:27.899 And he wasn't speaking of a physical place. 00:11:28.939 --> 00:11:29.879 A building.
