WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:06.320 Great knowledge comes through great failure. 00:00:06.320 --> 00:00:08.919 And of course this is true in the engineering world. 00:00:08.919 --> 00:00:13.679 where we talk about bridges, we talk about buildings, we talk about cars and vehicles, 00:00:13.679 --> 00:00:23.039 ! we talk about airplanes, whatever you will utilize from day to day has been tested, has been failed. 00:00:23.039 --> 00:00:29.839 And the reason why it's been failed is because they want to identify the areas of failure so they can help 00:00:29.839 --> 00:00:34.880 to bolster it and design it and improve on that design. 00:00:34.880 --> 00:00:42.640 My guess is that most of you, or many of you at least, are driving a car maybe even with a five-star crash rating. 00:00:42.640 --> 00:00:46.079 Well where does that five-star crash rating come from? 00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:48.159 Well it comes from crashes. 00:00:48.159 --> 00:00:54.600 It comes from driving that car into a wall or having other vehicles collide with that car 00:00:54.600 --> 00:01:03.640 so you can decide whether or not the things in that vehicle are going to help to preserve you from the failure that's coming. 00:01:03.640 --> 00:01:12.760 You see, testing and failure is meant to expose those areas of weakness. 00:01:12.760 --> 00:01:18.359 And we're going to see from our passage today, there is testing and there is failure. 00:01:18.359 --> 00:01:24.840 And this failure that we're going to see in the Apostle Peter especially, 00:01:24.840 --> 00:01:29.400 and of course that failure was present in the rest of the disciples too, 00:01:29.400 --> 00:01:40.440 but that failure that we see in the Apostle Peter was not only instrumental to help identify the root cause of his failure, 00:01:40.440 --> 00:01:47.560 but to help point him, and that was the goal, to help point him to where he could draw strength 00:01:48.280 --> 00:01:58.439 to help him to be successful, to help him be fruitful, to help him to be strong in overcoming the temptations that he was going to encounter. 00:01:58.439 --> 00:02:03.239 And I don't know what kind of person you are. 00:02:03.239 --> 00:02:07.319 Are you the kind of person that likes to learn from your own failures? 00:02:07.959 --> 00:02:11.719 Or are you the kind of person that likes to learn from the failures of others? 00:02:12.359 --> 00:02:15.000 I trust that you like to do things the easy way. 00:02:15.560 --> 00:02:22.439 And so as we look into our passage this morning, and we come to see the failure of Peter, 00:02:22.439 --> 00:02:30.439 we're going to come acquainted with this important lesson of where do we draw our power, 00:02:30.439 --> 00:02:36.520 where do we draw our strength, and what are those things that lead to failure, 00:02:36.520 --> 00:02:40.680 and I would say especially sin and rebellion against God. 00:02:40.680 --> 00:02:49.240 What are those things that we can shore up our lives so that we can find the help from God to overcome those times, 00:02:49.240 --> 00:02:59.000 those areas of temptation? As we saw from last week's passage, and I would encourage you to turn with me to Luke chapter 22. 00:02:59.400 --> 00:03:03.879 Luke chapter 22, if you're using the pew Bible, it's on page 883. 00:03:04.280 --> 00:03:10.760 We're going to pick it up in verse 54, but let me just kind of give you some background for those of you who weren't here last week. 00:03:10.759 --> 00:03:19.239 Luke chapter 22, we saw from Jesus's life last week that Jesus was especially in tune with God's power. 00:03:20.679 --> 00:03:27.399 How did Jesus draw strength from God? What did he do? What did he do last week? 00:03:28.039 --> 00:03:34.919 What did he do on the on the Mount of Olives in the Garden of Gethsemane? What did he encourage his disciples to do? 00:03:34.919 --> 00:03:40.679 Pray. Jesus drew strength from God through prayer. 00:03:42.039 --> 00:03:45.319 And that was the testimony of Jesus's life from the very beginning. 00:03:46.599 --> 00:03:50.599 From the very beginning, Jesus's life in ministry was marked by prayer. 00:03:51.799 --> 00:03:58.519 He's driven in to the desert at the very beginning to kick off his ministry by the Holy Spirit, 00:03:58.520 --> 00:04:05.719 and he's out there in the wilderness 40 days to pray. He's there to commune with God. He's there to draw 00:04:05.719 --> 00:04:14.920 strength from God himself to then put that strength to work through the ministry that he was about to do. 00:04:15.320 --> 00:04:21.319 And then throughout his life and throughout his ministry, he's marked as one, especially in the 00:04:21.319 --> 00:04:26.600 gospel of Luke, who is often going out to the desolate places. And it wasn't because Jesus needed some alone 00:04:26.600 --> 00:04:34.920 time. It was because Jesus needed to draw strength from the Father. He knew the essential quality of 00:04:34.920 --> 00:04:44.600 prayer in depending upon God. And so that's what we saw last week. We saw that Jesus is there in the garden. 00:04:45.320 --> 00:04:53.320 And Jesus is agonizing in prayer. And Jesus is doing this not because he knows how hard things are going to be, 00:04:53.319 --> 00:05:00.920 and he's asking for a way out. No, Jesus knows what's coming. And Jesus is submitting himself to the Father. 00:05:00.920 --> 00:05:08.920 But he's also drawing strength from God through prayer. He's strengthened through prayer. And he does, 00:05:09.719 --> 00:05:15.639 he invites the disciples to enjoy the benefits of what's available to them in the same way. 00:05:15.639 --> 00:05:25.159 In Luke's condensed version of the Garden of Gethsemane, Luke draws attention to this two times. 00:05:25.959 --> 00:05:31.560 In Luke chapter 22, verse 40, he says, this is Jesus' words, 00:05:31.560 --> 00:05:38.360 pray that you enter not into temptation. And then a couple of verses later in verse 46, 00:05:38.360 --> 00:05:46.920 rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation. Jesus understood what was coming. 00:05:47.480 --> 00:05:53.800 Jesus had already warned his disciples of what awaited them. He knew what was happening in just 00:05:53.800 --> 00:06:01.080 the next few hours. He knew they would not be able to stand without the power of God. They needed to 00:06:01.080 --> 00:06:05.800 pray. They needed to overcome temptation. It was only possible through the power of God. 00:06:05.800 --> 00:06:12.840 God. He knew that their lives would be ambushed. They would be assaulted by the enemy, by the adversary, 00:06:12.840 --> 00:06:20.520 by Satan himself. And they would need supernatural power to resist the temptation that was coming. 00:06:22.040 --> 00:06:28.920 They needed power. They needed to pray. And I might just encourage you to write this down. 00:06:28.920 --> 00:06:44.840 One prominent pastor put it this way. He said, as a Christian, you have a heavenly father who hears and 00:06:44.840 --> 00:06:51.960 answers prayer. Jesus said, all things whatsoever you shall ask in prayer, believing you shall receive. 00:06:51.959 --> 00:06:58.919 Every man or woman whose life has counted for the church and the kingdom of God has been a person of prayer. 00:06:59.399 --> 00:07:07.319 You cannot afford to be too busy to pray. A prayerless Christian is a powerless Christian. 00:07:08.120 --> 00:07:13.799 Jesus Christ spent many hours in prayer. Sometimes he spent the night on a mountaintop in solitary, 00:07:13.800 --> 00:07:20.439 communion with God the Father. If he felt that he had to pray, how much more do we need to pray? 00:07:21.160 --> 00:07:30.439 Jesus demonstrated his commitment and his dependence on God for divine power. He sets the example for us on 00:07:30.439 --> 00:07:36.519 how not only to draw from that power, how to depend on that power, but how to put that power to work. 00:07:36.519 --> 00:07:45.240 And so this passage for us today, beginning in Luke chapter 22, verse 54, now sets up a contrast for us. 00:07:45.240 --> 00:07:53.000 We can see the strength that's working in our Savior, and then we're going to see the correlation of an 00:07:53.000 --> 00:08:00.919 overconfident disciple. An overconfident disciple, Peter, who thought he had it covered. He thought he had 00:08:00.920 --> 00:08:07.800 it under control. He thought he could make it on his own. He didn't need God's help. He could do it all himself. 00:08:09.319 --> 00:08:16.360 So let's take a look at a strengthened Savior. It begins in verse 54, and let's read the first part of our passage 00:08:16.360 --> 00:08:21.879 before we dive in and dissect this text for ourselves. It says, 00:08:21.879 --> 00:08:29.879 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house. And Peter was following at a distance. 00:08:29.879 --> 00:08:36.120 And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 00:08:36.840 --> 00:08:41.879 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, 00:08:41.879 --> 00:08:47.320 This man also was with him. But he denied it, saying, Woman, I do not know him. 00:08:48.039 --> 00:08:54.519 And a little later, someone else saw him and said, You also are one of them. But Peter said, Man, I am not. 00:08:54.519 --> 00:09:02.039 And after an interval of about an hour, still another insisted, saying, Certainly this man 00:09:02.519 --> 00:09:09.720 also was with him, for he too is a Galilean. But Peter said, Man, I do not know what you are talking 00:09:09.720 --> 00:09:16.919 about. And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. And the Lord turned and looked at 00:09:16.919 --> 00:09:23.479 Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, Before the rooster crows today, 00:09:23.479 --> 00:09:32.199 you will deny me three times. And he went out and wept bitterly. We see the strength of our Savior. 00:09:32.199 --> 00:09:36.599 We're going to see it in three ways through our passage today. And I'm just going to begin here 00:09:36.599 --> 00:09:41.799 in verse 54. And then we're going to take a pause on seeing the strength of our Savior. We're going to 00:09:41.799 --> 00:09:46.279 transition to Peter. So you're going to have to hang on. Okay. And we're going to kind of pick it up 00:09:46.279 --> 00:09:51.000 at the end of our passage and fill out the other two ways in which we'll see the strength of our 00:09:51.000 --> 00:09:58.599 Savior. So trust me, you'll keep up and I'll help you along the way. First, a strength to surrender. 00:09:59.399 --> 00:10:07.319 He's strengthened to surrender. This is our Savior. It says they seized him. This is the word to catch or 00:10:07.320 --> 00:10:13.240 to capture. This is the word to take by force. This is the word that's used earlier in the Gospel of Luke 00:10:13.240 --> 00:10:19.240 for when the disciples are catching fish. And they've caught this fish and they've taken them, 00:10:19.240 --> 00:10:23.720 hold of them. They have them. They're under their control. That's the word we're talking about. 00:10:24.840 --> 00:10:30.120 Just as a reminder, those of you who weren't here last week, we're the final night before Jesus' 00:10:30.120 --> 00:10:35.000 crucifixion. The disciples have spent an evening together. They've enjoyed a meal 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:40.200 together. Jesus has washed their feet. He's encouraged them. He's implemented this new 00:10:40.919 --> 00:10:46.679 covenant, this communion supper through this Passover time. They've made their way out to the 00:10:46.679 --> 00:10:52.600 Mount of Olives and there they are. They're supposed to pray. Jesus is praying. The disciples are supposed 00:10:52.600 --> 00:11:01.000 to be praying. And now all of a sudden, this crowd comes to take hold of Jesus. We see that in verse 47. 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:01.960 It says, 00:11:01.960 --> 00:11:06.840 While he was still speaking, there came a crowd. And the man called Judas, one of the twelve, 00:11:06.840 --> 00:11:13.559 was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him. So Judas is out in front and they lay hands 00:11:13.559 --> 00:11:19.559 on Jesus. We find from the other accounts, the other Gospel accounts, this isn't just a crowd. 00:11:19.559 --> 00:11:27.479 Matthew 26 calls them a great multitude or a large crowd. It says in Matthew 26, 47, 00:11:27.479 --> 00:11:33.959 While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd or a large 00:11:33.959 --> 00:11:38.439 multitude with swords and clubs from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 00:11:38.439 --> 00:11:42.759 John chapter 18 puts it this way. In verse 3 it says, 00:11:42.759 --> 00:11:48.279 So Judas came to the grove guiding a detachment of soldiers and some of the officials from the 00:11:48.279 --> 00:11:53.720 chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns, and weapons. Then the detachment 00:11:53.720 --> 00:11:59.080 of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus and they bound him. 00:11:59.639 --> 00:12:06.279 This word for detachment in the Greek is the word for cohort. It's one-tenth of a legion. A legion is 00:12:06.279 --> 00:12:13.399 six thousand and so a tenth of that is six hundred. They come with six hundred armed men to capture one, 00:12:14.199 --> 00:12:21.079 Jesus, and twelve or eleven sleeping disciples to catch them by surprise. These well-armed, 00:12:21.079 --> 00:12:29.639 well-trained Roman soldiers coming to capture one. Why? Well, think partly it's a testimony 00:12:30.279 --> 00:12:37.319 of the power of our Lord. Partly it's a testimony of the chief priests and the in the scribes recognizing 00:12:37.319 --> 00:12:44.439 that that what has become expected with Jesus is the unexpected. They've come to understand that 00:12:44.439 --> 00:12:50.919 that Jesus is able to do things that they can't explain. And so they come prepared or so they think. 00:12:50.919 --> 00:12:59.319 They think. But what they thought was preparation, they had no idea of the person really that they 00:12:59.319 --> 00:13:06.360 were reckoning with. We find from Matthew's account that when the arrest happened in Matthew chapter 26, 00:13:06.360 --> 00:13:15.559 52 and 53, Peter slashes off the ear of Malchus, the high priest's servant, and Jesus says this. He says to 00:13:15.559 --> 00:13:23.159 him, put your sword back into its place, for all who take the sword will perish by the sword. Do you think 00:13:23.159 --> 00:13:29.239 that I cannot appeal to my father and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? 00:13:30.359 --> 00:13:41.159 You see, Peter, you should understand who I am. That six hundred can be overcome by the seventy-two 00:13:41.159 --> 00:13:48.919 thousand that I could call in an instant. These trained soldiers, these human men will be overwhelmed 00:13:48.919 --> 00:13:54.839 by the seventy-two thousand I could call down in an instant of heavenly messengers and angels who could 00:13:54.839 --> 00:14:05.959 take care of this in no time flat. Recognize that Jesus was willing to surrender. Jesus was not captured 00:14:05.960 --> 00:14:14.840 against his will. Jesus was a willing participant. We must see that in this text. We must see the 00:14:14.840 --> 00:14:23.000 strengthening power of God to help Jesus surrender. This was not weakness. This was strength in allowing 00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:30.519 the plan of God to run its course in Jesus's life, to be seized by human, wicked men who thought they were 00:14:30.519 --> 00:14:38.120 dominating, but they weren't. Jesus was the master. He was in total control of all the events that were 00:14:38.120 --> 00:14:45.159 going down. And Jesus, of course, had no need for a host of angels. Now, we get a window of this. This is 00:14:45.159 --> 00:14:52.199 probably one of my favorite parts of the Gospel accounts in John chapter 18, verses 4 to 8, when the 00:14:52.199 --> 00:14:58.600 soldiers come. It says, then Jesus, knowing that all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, 00:14:58.600 --> 00:15:06.680 who do you seek? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus said to them, I am he. Judas, who betrayed him, 00:15:06.680 --> 00:15:13.960 was standing with him. When Jesus said to them, I am he, they drew back and fell to the ground. 00:15:15.080 --> 00:15:24.120 Two words, Ego, Emi. I am, which hearkens all the way back to the burning bush when the I am made 00:15:24.120 --> 00:15:31.320 his himself known to Moses there. The place that you're standing on is holy ground. I'm the I am, and I'm going 00:15:31.320 --> 00:15:37.799 to deliver these people, my people, out of Egypt. I'm going to provide rescue for them once and for all. 00:15:38.519 --> 00:15:44.679 That same I am opens his mouth, and with two words, he knocks them flat on the ground. 00:15:45.799 --> 00:15:52.120 The absolute control and sovereignty of our God. They weren't going to take him by force. They weren't prepared. 00:15:52.120 --> 00:15:58.200 They thought they were prepared. They thought 600 would be enough. But if it were not for the willingness 00:15:58.840 --> 00:16:07.159 of our Savior and the strengthening power of God working through our Savior to help him in that moment to surrender, 00:16:08.200 --> 00:16:14.840 these things would not have unfolded the way they did. Jesus was the I am. He is the I am. 00:16:14.840 --> 00:16:22.920 And he was strengthened by prayer, prepared for the worst, dependent on the Father. And so they seized him, 00:16:22.920 --> 00:16:29.800 we find in verse 54, and led him away, bringing him to the high priest's house. This would begin a 00:16:29.800 --> 00:16:36.040 course of three different trials that Jesus would experience underneath the hands of the Jewish leaders. 00:16:36.039 --> 00:16:44.279 First, at Annas' house, who used to be a high priest. He was kind of the figurehead, kind of the main man 00:16:44.279 --> 00:16:52.679 behind the religious establishment, as it were. His son-in-law Caiaphas was the acting high priest, 00:16:52.679 --> 00:16:58.919 but Annas was still the power behind it all. And Jesus would meet with them on three different 00:16:58.919 --> 00:17:05.079 occasions through that evening, so they could kind of set up some kind of accusation that they could present 00:17:05.079 --> 00:17:12.759 to Pilate and the Roman authorities to put Jesus to death on the cross. But Jesus is bolstered by prayer. 00:17:13.639 --> 00:17:22.680 Jesus knows the will of the Father. Jesus is strengthened for surrender. Jesus will also show his command of the 00:17:22.680 --> 00:17:29.880 situation as John chapter 18 continues. Verses 7 and 8 says this, So he asked them again, Whom do you seek? 00:17:30.680 --> 00:17:37.799 And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I told you that I am he, so if you seek me, let these men go. 00:17:38.600 --> 00:17:45.080 This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken. Of those whom you gave me, I have lost not one. 00:17:46.039 --> 00:17:52.200 Jesus was in absolute command of the situation. These men finally gained their composure. 00:17:52.200 --> 00:17:58.120 Jesus answers their question again. Jesus instructs them, Do not touch my disciples. He's able to issue 00:17:58.120 --> 00:18:05.480 that command. They cannot reject that command because he is the sovereign one. And so they allow 00:18:05.480 --> 00:18:12.840 the disciples to go and they take Jesus away. Jesus strengthened for that moment by prayer. 00:18:13.960 --> 00:18:20.120 Now we're going to move on to Peter. He's the next in view. We're going to save these next two points 00:18:20.119 --> 00:18:28.519 for the end. Okay? We're going to see in verses 54 to 62, not a strengthened savior, but an overconfident 00:18:28.519 --> 00:18:38.279 disciple. An overconfident disciple. Now I say overconfident disciple and I kind of leave Peter as a generic 00:18:39.079 --> 00:18:46.439 name, not putting his name here because I want us all to understand that we need to insert ourselves 00:18:46.440 --> 00:18:54.840 into this picture. That every time we choose not to draw power from God, we are demonstrating a 00:18:54.840 --> 00:19:04.200 confidence in self and not a confidence in the Lord. We have underestimated the schemes of the enemy and we 00:19:04.200 --> 00:19:10.440 have downplayed the warnings that God has given to us through his word. And that's what that's what 00:19:11.080 --> 00:19:17.480 Peter does. And we'll follow his steps if we do the same. This overconfident disciple. But we see this 00:19:17.480 --> 00:19:24.120 first as he subjects himself to danger. He subjects himself to danger. Notice verse 54 and 55. It says, 00:19:24.120 --> 00:19:31.799 Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house. And Peter was following 00:19:31.799 --> 00:19:38.200 at a distance. And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and sat down together, 00:19:38.200 --> 00:19:49.399 Peter sat down among them. Peter puts himself right in the middle of all of this problem. The events that 00:19:49.399 --> 00:19:58.200 would unfold from verses 54 to 62 are a direct result of Peter's own making. Rather than sensing his weakness, 00:19:58.200 --> 00:20:03.160 rather than heeding the warnings that God had given to him, rather than keeping a distance, 00:20:03.880 --> 00:20:12.039 Peter, either by curiosity or by his sense of loyalty and devotion to God, whatever it was, 00:20:12.039 --> 00:20:19.319 we're not really told, he decides to follow. The rest of the disciples have scattered, but Peter and John, 00:20:19.319 --> 00:20:26.840 as we find from John's account, follow at a distance. Remember that Peter has made this bold 00:20:26.839 --> 00:20:34.439 proclamation. In the garden from Mark chapter 14, Jesus will tell Peter again, you're going to deny 00:20:34.439 --> 00:20:41.159 me three times. And Peter has the audacity in the garden on this second time now. In Mark chapter 14, 00:20:41.159 --> 00:20:48.919 29, he says, Even though they all fall away, I will not. If I must die with you, I will not deny you. 00:20:49.480 --> 00:20:55.240 All the other disciples, they may run and hide, but I'm going to follow and I'm going to remain loyal. 00:20:55.240 --> 00:21:03.799 Big words from an unprepared man. Peter has carefully made his way to the place where Jesus is. 00:21:04.359 --> 00:21:10.359 He's come to this courtyard and imagine this massive structure with a courtyard in the middle. That 00:21:10.359 --> 00:21:17.480 courtyard is protected by a gate and so that those who would enter into that courtyard and enter into the 00:21:17.480 --> 00:21:24.440 common grounds would need to go through this gate. And so Peter finds his way into this courtyard, 00:21:24.440 --> 00:21:30.920 and there he is now. A fire has been kindled. It's obviously a cold night and people are sitting 00:21:30.920 --> 00:21:37.000 around the fire to get warm. Here Peter comes too, which makes a lot of sense. He comes to warm himself 00:21:37.000 --> 00:21:45.160 by the fire. But we find in verse 56 what happens as a result of him warming himself by the fire. 00:21:45.880 --> 00:21:54.039 It says, A servant girl seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him said, This man also 00:21:54.039 --> 00:22:01.720 was with him. Well, there's heat there, but there's also light there at the fire. And Peter was totally 00:22:01.720 --> 00:22:09.880 unfazed. He had no comprehension of the fact that here he has been in the temple every single day. 00:22:10.680 --> 00:22:18.680 Here he's been associated with the disciple of Christ every day in the temple as all the people are coming, 00:22:18.680 --> 00:22:25.880 hanging on Jesus' every word, and then the hatred of the high priest and their religious officials 00:22:25.880 --> 00:22:32.200 who have pointed out Jesus and his disciples and called attention to them. And here 00:22:33.480 --> 00:22:41.400 here is this servant girl who is a servant of the high priest. And this call that has gone out even 00:22:41.400 --> 00:22:49.800 before this week to everyone to be on the lookout. And now Peter, for some reason, has stepped in and 00:22:49.800 --> 00:22:58.200 he is right there in proximity, right there in the midst of danger. And Peter's weakness will now emerge. 00:22:59.720 --> 00:23:06.680 He's subjected himself to the danger of this moment. He's come unprepared. And so the denial, 00:23:06.680 --> 00:23:16.360 the three-fold denial that we'll see that ensues is preceded by a sequence of failures that led to 00:23:16.360 --> 00:23:22.440 this inevitable moment. And by the way, that's how it always happens with sin. Sin always follows this 00:23:22.440 --> 00:23:28.680 course. We find that course in James chapter 1. It says that God cannot be tempted by evil, neither does 00:23:28.680 --> 00:23:35.400 he tempt anyone. But everyone is tempted when he's drawn away by his own desires and he's enticed. And so 00:23:35.400 --> 00:23:43.640 the desires of our heart will reflect the vulnerability that's there. And unless we come to a place of 00:23:43.640 --> 00:23:55.080 cutting and severing off that course, the inevitable result will be sin. Well, this issue in Peter's life 00:23:55.800 --> 00:24:04.680 traced back at least to that evening. And I want to just draw out for you five ways that Peter depended 00:24:04.680 --> 00:24:12.200 on his own strength.
