trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof, but say the word and my servant will be healed. 00:00:41.840 --> 00:00:45.179 But this account here in Luke chapter 8 is different. 00:00:45.519 --> 00:00:53.840 Jesus has just arrived back from the other side of the Sea of Galilee, and a man named Jairus is waiting there for him. 00:00:55.200 --> 00:00:56.340 Now, who is Jairus? 00:00:56.340 --> 00:01:01.660 Luke tells us that he was a synagogue ruler or leader. 00:01:03.640 --> 00:01:08.740 So the centurion from chapter 7 was a soldier and likely a Gentile, a non-Jew. 00:01:09.120 --> 00:01:13.840 But Jairus is one of the religious leaders of the local synagogue and almost certainly a Jew. 00:01:15.719 --> 00:01:20.980 Back in Luke 7, it was the centurion's servant who was sick and about to die. 00:01:20.980 --> 00:01:26.260 But here in Luke chapter 8, we discover that it's Jairus' own daughter who was sick. 00:01:27.680 --> 00:01:31.640 Luke tells us that she was a girl about 12 years old. 00:01:33.140 --> 00:01:34.980 Jairus' only daughter. 00:01:37.260 --> 00:01:38.719 And how serious is this? 00:01:38.800 --> 00:01:40.520 Well, Luke just says she was dying. 00:01:41.840 --> 00:01:46.939 No cause for death is mentioned, whether sickness or injury, just that death seems imminent. 00:01:47.120 --> 00:01:47.780 She was dying. 00:01:47.780 --> 00:01:57.960 With the centurion in chapter 7, we remember how he sent messengers to Jesus to come and heal his servants. 00:01:58.099 --> 00:02:03.120 But here we see that Jairus, the girl's father, has come himself to Jesus. 00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:11.259 Can you imagine the desperation of Jairus and his wife in these moments? 00:02:11.259 --> 00:02:15.899 Jairus' precious daughter lay dying in the bed. 00:02:18.139 --> 00:02:20.419 Probably doctors had already been sought out. 00:02:21.359 --> 00:02:24.599 And probably the prognosis had already been given. 00:02:25.159 --> 00:02:26.159 And so what was left? 00:02:27.680 --> 00:02:33.819 Can you imagine Jairus leaving the house where his own daughter is dying in search of Jesus? 00:02:33.939 --> 00:02:36.519 The one that he has heard can heal. 00:02:36.520 --> 00:02:44.580 Can you imagine Jairus waiting anxiously for Jesus and his disciples to get to the shore and get out of the boat? 00:02:47.480 --> 00:02:50.060 Look at how Jairus approached Jesus. 00:02:51.320 --> 00:02:54.500 It says he came and fell at Jesus' feet. 00:02:56.020 --> 00:02:59.160 Pleading with him to come to his house. 00:02:59.159 --> 00:03:03.120 And Jesus agrees to go. 00:03:05.520 --> 00:03:09.259 But unlike with the previous miracle with the centurion, 00:03:09.539 --> 00:03:13.000 getting to Jairus' house proves to be a challenge. 00:03:14.900 --> 00:03:18.639 As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 00:03:19.699 --> 00:03:21.659 That word crushed is very strong. 00:03:21.659 --> 00:03:28.479 It's a word that was used to describe the act of applying pressure around the neck in order to kill someone. 00:03:29.259 --> 00:03:35.240 And of course it's used figuratively here to describe just how tightly the crowd pressed and squeezed in around Jesus. 00:03:36.819 --> 00:03:40.079 Can you imagine Jesus trying to get through these narrow streets 00:03:40.079 --> 00:03:45.519 with all these people tightly packed in there, 00:03:46.699 --> 00:03:48.259 clamoring around him? 00:03:48.259 --> 00:03:52.439 Maybe you remember a time when you were at a large gathering, 00:03:52.620 --> 00:03:57.019 whether a sporting event or a conference or a concert. 00:03:57.799 --> 00:03:59.780 And there's people everywhere. 00:04:00.459 --> 00:04:02.039 And what do we do in those situations? 00:04:02.239 --> 00:04:06.259 Well, if you're like me, you try to just kind of slither through the crowd 00:04:06.259 --> 00:04:10.280 and take those measured steps so as to not collide with anybody. 00:04:12.060 --> 00:04:16.620 But the problem here for Jesus is that he is the one that everybody is trying to get to. 00:04:16.620 --> 00:04:19.860 And so there's no slithering through the crowd for 00:04:55.579 And Peter states the obvious. 00:04:55.740 --> 00:04:59.199 Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you. 00:05:00.240 --> 00:05:04.379 Lots of people have touched you in the --> 00:05:35.579 But all of a sudden, Jesus became aware 00:05:35.579 --> 00:05:37.599 that power had gone out from him. 00:05:39.219 --> 00:05:40.420 Who was this woman? 00:05:41.560 --> 00:05:43.659 Well, Luke tells us in verse 43 00:05:43.659 --> 00:05:47.240 that she had been subject to bleeding for 12 years. 00:05:49.120 --> 00:05:51.360 But no one could heal her. 00:05:51.360 --> 00:05:57.540 So in the midst of this very public moment of desperation for Jairus 00:05:57.540 --> 00:06:00.780 and Jairus' daughter and his family, 00:06:01.139 --> 00:06:03.740 there is this whole other story of desperation 00:06:03.740 --> 00:06:05.660 going on with this woman. 00:06:07.319 --> 00:06:09.860 And as I first read through this earlier in the week, 00:06:09.920 --> 00:06:13.900 I was struck again by how long this woman had suffered with this bleeding. 00:06:15.180 --> 00:06:16.360 12 years. 00:06:16.360 --> 00:06:17.040 12 years. 00:06:20.080 --> 00:06:22.319 Commentators and scholars suggest 00:06:22.319 --> 00:06:26.240 that this was most likely some form of uterine hemorrhaging. 00:06:27.220 --> 00:06:28.960 Likely a menstrual disorder. 00:06:30.040 --> 00:06:33.360 And the cause of this, it's not stated here. 00:06:34.139 --> 00:06:37.819 What is stated is that the doctors were baffled by this. 00:06:38.920 --> 00:06:41.780 No one could heal her, says Luke. 00:06:41.779 --> 00:06:46.259 In Mark's gospel are a few extra details. 00:06:47.619 --> 00:06:49.739 Mark 5, 26. 00:06:50.500 --> 00:06:53.719 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors 00:06:53.719 --> 00:06:56.139 and had spent all she had. 00:06:57.219 --> 00:06:58.679 Yet instead of getting better, 00:06:59.959 --> 00:07:00.819 she grew worse. 00:07:02.519 --> 00:07:03.659 And so this was rare. 00:07:03.979 --> 00:07:04.839 This was abnormal. 00:07:05.719 --> 00:07:08.179 Something was really off in this woman's body. 00:07:08.180 --> 00:07:12.459 Whether caused by issues with particular organs or hormones, 00:07:12.699 --> 00:07:14.079 they didn't know what to do with her. 00:07:15.900 --> 00:07:17.240 They'd never seen this. 00:07:17.740 --> 00:07:20.319 Probably she'd already tried all kinds of treatments, 00:07:20.900 --> 00:07:22.199 but nothing was working. 00:07:26.699 --> 00:07:30.319 Obviously this couldn't have been a constant heavy flow of blood 00:07:30.319 --> 00:07:32.460 for 12 years or she would have died. 00:07:32.459 --> 00:07:37.439 But probably a persistent, weakly, moderate flow. 00:07:37.579 --> 00:07:39.019 Perhaps somewhat unpredictable. 00:07:40.379 --> 00:07:44.779 Probably she was somewhat anemic and weak because of it. 00:07:46.500 --> 00:07:48.000 And then on top of all that, 00:07:48.099 --> 00:07:52.179 there was according to the law of Moses. 00:08:16.500 --> 00:08:20.760 That would have had big implications on her life as well. 00:08:20.759 --> 00:08:22.319 She would have been unable to participate things 00:09:12.899 --> 00:09:14.699 Jesus was teaching and saying, 00:09:15.519 --> 00:09:18.120 and hope began to rise in her heart. 00:09:20.139 --> 00:09:22.719 Unlike the countless doctors who had seen her, 00:09:24.359 --> 00:09:25.979 a hope that Jesus was different, 00:09:27.099 --> 00:09:29.819 that he could be the one to deliver her 00:09:29.819 --> 00:09:30.979 from this suffering. 00:09:31.819 --> 00:09:33.419 And somewhere along the line, 00:09:33.579 --> 00:09:37.099 hope turns into confidence and faith. 00:09:37.100 --> 00:09:40.600 Her thought, according to Mark's gospel, 00:09:40.740 --> 00:09:41.040 was, 00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:43.960 if I just touch his clothes, 00:09:44.480 --> 00:09:46.340 I will be healed. 00:09:48.980 --> 00:09:50.300 Those are words of faith. 00:09:51.240 --> 00:09:53.740 She believes that Jesus has 00:09:53.740 --> 00:09:56.700 the power of God to heal. 00:09:57.580 --> 00:09:59.220 She believes it so strongly 00:09:59.220 --> 00:10:00.759 that she doesn't even need 00:10:00.759 --> 00:10:02.740 to have a one-on-one conversation with Jesus. 00:10:02.879 --> 00:10:04.940 She doesn't need Jesus to lay hands on her
