00:00:33.899 --> 00:00:39.719 This is probably one of the best-known chapters in the New Testament, 00:00:39.960 --> 00:00:43.799 and I'm sure everybody has heard many a sermon on this 00:00:43.799 --> 00:00:47.739 because it is so full of instruction, so full of meaning. 00:00:48.799 --> 00:00:51.459 It is really quite a remarkable chapter, 00:00:51.939 --> 00:00:58.420 and it highlights very much the care and the compassion of Christ, 00:00:58.820 --> 00:01:01.399 the authority, the power of Christ. 00:01:01.399 --> 00:01:07.120 It highlights his humanness, highlights his godness. 00:01:08.480 --> 00:01:11.439 And the chapter is full of instructions for us. 00:01:12.459 --> 00:01:20.620 And we see the delay of Christ responding to the news that Lazarus was very ill, 00:01:21.560 --> 00:01:24.019 and this was a family that he loves. 00:01:24.019 --> 00:01:31.539 And it teaches us that the delays of Christ in answering doesn't mean that he's not hearing us. 00:01:32.119 --> 00:01:36.439 You know, sometimes when we pray and it appears that the Lord isn't hearing, 00:01:36.799 --> 00:01:38.599 there's no answer to our prayer. 00:01:39.459 --> 00:01:42.979 We're liable to think, God's not listening. 00:01:43.299 --> 00:01:44.099 God's not hearing. 00:01:44.640 --> 00:01:49.420 Well, this chapter shows us very clearly that the Lord was fully aware. 00:01:49.420 --> 00:01:51.299 The Lord was responding. 00:01:52.159 --> 00:01:55.219 But what we've got to learn is that at the end of the day, 00:01:55.859 --> 00:01:59.540 God will always work things for his own glory. 00:02:00.340 --> 00:02:05.560 And that's a problem for us because we expect things to, 00:02:05.620 --> 00:02:07.620 when we bring a matter before the Lord, 00:02:08.139 --> 00:02:12.800 we have worked out in our own mind how we want it to work out. 00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:17.560 And the Lord might have a completely different purpose and a different plan 00:02:17.560 --> know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you. 00:03:11.319 --> 00:03:13.780 So that's Martha saying to Jesus, whatever. 00:03:14.400 --> 00:03:17.219 I know, Jesus, whatever you ask. 00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:21.960 But the thing is, Martha wasn't ready for the whatever. 00:03:23.259 --> 00:03:27.280 Because when Jesus asks them to take away the stone, 00:03:27.460 --> 00:03:28.479 Martha's horrified. 00:03:29.419 --> 00:03:31.620 And Martha's basically saying, you can't do that. 00:03:33.159 --> 00:03:34.379 No, Lord, not that. 00:03:35.960 --> 00:03:37.900 And I'm sure we've been there as well. 00:03:38.919 --> 00:03:41.020 Because there have been times we've said, 00:03:42.079 --> 00:03:43.979 maybe not audibly, but in our hearts, 00:03:44.060 --> 00:03:45.460 we're saying, Lord, what are you doing? 00:03:46.379 --> 00:03:47.259 Lord, not this. 00:03:48.740 --> 00:03:51.280 And that shows us that we're not alone. 00:03:51.479 --> 00:03:52.819 Here's this good woman. 00:03:53.819 --> 00:03:55.519 And she's saying, I know, whatever. 00:03:55.519 --> 00:04:00.460 But when Jesus begins to tell whatever means, 00:04:00.460 --> 00:04:03.000 she's saying, no, not that. 00:04:04.280 --> 00:04:07.580 And again, we see that the sisters make the same mistake. 00:04:07.719 --> 00:04:11.620 Both Mary and Martha believe that if Jesus had been present, 00:04:12.200 00:04:24.319 when losses and pains and difficulties come into our life, 00:04:24.379 --> 00:04:26.500 that it's a sign that the Lord isn't with us. 00:04:26.500 --> 00:04:28.680 That is not the case. 00:04:29.720 --> 00:04:33.379 The Lord had a purpose in allowing Lazarus to die, 00:04:33.480 --> 00:04:34.839 as is very obvious here. 00:04:35.439 --> 00:04:38.199 But sometimes we make the mistake of thinking 00:04:38.199 --> 00:04:40.579 that the Lord isn't there. 00:04:41.120 --> 00:04:42.639 Well, we've always got to remember 00:04:42.639 --> 00:04:45.839 that the way that God works is 00:04:45.839 --> 00:04:47.959 that he has to try us. 00:04:49.199 --> 00:04:52.120 You know what the Lord says of the trial of our faith? 00:04:52.500 --> 00:04:54.699 That it's more precious than gold. 00:04:54.699 --> 00:04:57.099 Now, we know how precious gold is. 00:04:57.759 --> 00:04:59.039 But in the Lord's sight, 00:04:59.539 --> 00:05:01.439 the trial of our faith 00:05:01.439 --> 00:05:05.339 is of far more importance and more value than gold. 00:05:06.060 --> 00:05:07.019 And so it's inevitable, 00:05:07.480 --> 00:05:09.860 but the Lord is going to test his people. unbelief 00:05:34.919 --> 00:05:39.120 is an incredible blight on our Christian life. 00:05:39.699 --> 00:05:42.979 Unbelief robs us of seeing so much. 00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:46.779 Unbelief is a hindrance to the work of Jesus. 00:05:46.779 --> 00:05:50.839 It's not a sense of unworthiness 00:05:50.839 --> 00:05:54.239 that holds back the work of Jesus. 00:05:55.139 --> 00:05:56.639 It's not a sense of our sin 00:05:56.639 --> 00:05:58.879 that holds back the work of Jesus. 00:05:59.039 --> 00:05:59.679 It's unbelief. 00:05:59.959 --> 00:06:01.279 It tells us in Mark's gospel, 00:06:02.039 --> 00:06:04.619 He could do no mighty works there 00:06:04.619 --> 00:06:06.539 except lay hands on a few. 00:06:07.079 --> 00:06:08.939 And he marveled at their unbelief. 00:06:08.939 --> 00:06:13.019 So you see how unbelief hinders 00:06:13.019 --> 00:06:15.719 the work of Christ like little else. 00:06:16.819 --> 00:06:19.319 And it's a challenging question to ourselves as well. 00:07:58.320 where Jesus is stating 00:07:58.320 --> 00:08:01.580 that he is a personal guarantee 00:08:01.580 --> 00:08:05.439 that he will win victory 00:08:05.439 --> 00:08:07.439 over death and over the grave. 00:08:07.960 --> 00:08:10.100 And that because he will win victory 00:08:10.100 --> 00:08:11.800 over the death and the grave, 00:08:12.140 --> 00:08:13.620 so will all his people.
