children gave short accounts of the memories that they had with their mother growing up. 00:00:50.740 --> 00:01:03.100 And more recently in the days as they watched life slip away, the peace that she it's easy for us to say that when the raw pain has subdued after death. 00:05:04.079 --> 00:05:11.459 Now for a few minutes this morning, I want us to dial in on these hours that we have read about in recited stories passed down from generation to generation. 00:06:30.500 --> 00:06:36.399 They would have talked about the lamb, the Passover lamb, from the time of their forefathers escaping from Egypt. 00:06:36.399 --> 00:06:40.439 They would have prepared the bitter herbs and the unleavened bread. 00:06:40.439 --> 00:06:47.759 And as they ate that together, they would have talked about this lamb that was taken and sacrificed and eaten. 00:06:48.500 --> 00:06:56.899 And they would have reminded themselves of the significance of the meal and how the blood of the lamb was preserved and delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians. 00:06:56.899 --> 00:07:00.539 And how the lamb would have been food for their journey. 00:07:01.659 --> 00:07:10.899 And yet they were totally unaware that in 12 hours time, the man that they had been following for the last three hours would be slain like a lamb. 00:07:10.899 --> 00:07:17.179 And be sacrificed for their deliverance and for to bring about peace with God. 00:07:18.839 --> 00:07:24.639 In our chapter here in verse 1, we read that the Lord Jesus goes out with his disciples to a place that they often went to. 00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:32.019 He crosses over the valley and up the side of the hill to the olive garden, a place that we know as Gethsemane. 00:07:32.799 --> 00:07:35.539 It's a place that the Lord Jesus often went with his disciples. 00:07:36.439 --> 00:07:38.620 We go there to spend time with them for rest. 00:07:38.620 --> 00:07:41.300 They would pray there. 00:07:41.379 --> 00:07:42.000 They would meditate. 00:07:42.259 --> 00:07:43.579 They would commune together. 00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:48.480 It's not the first time that God has communed with people in a garden. 00:07:49.259 --> 00:07:54.040 It's very similar to a story that God communed with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. 00:07:55.740 --> 00:08:00.180 And in that garden, it's in similar fashion. 00:08:01.759 --> 00:08:04.399 Adam and Eve betray God. 00:08:05.699 --> 00:08:08.600 Just as Judas is about to betray God. 00:08:08.620 --> 00:08:21.000 Unlike the scene in the Garden of Eden where Satan comes in subtly, in this scene that we have, a band of soldiers and the temple guards, they came in loudly. 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:31.500 As I've been looking through and studying for this passage, the scholars would say that there's maybe up to 600 people, 600 soldiers would have been involved there. 00:08:32.220 --> 00:08:34.620 That's what a cohort of the soldiers would have looked like. 00:08:34.679 --> 00:08:42.039 Plus the temple guards and the police and some of the Sanhedrin and the mob that would have come to collect him. 00:08:42.039 --> 00:08:49.039 A big, angry band of soldiers came that night to take the Lord Jesus. 00:08:53.919 --> 00:08:57.339 Not subtly, but by force and aggression. 00:08:57.340 --> 00:09:03.040 You know, Jesus was in that familiar place with his disciples. 00:09:03.899 --> 00:09:09.300 And if we had read in Matthew or Mark, we might have seen a little bit more details than what we see in John's Gospel. 00:09:09.299 --> 00:09:14.919 But in that familiar place, Judas betrays the Lord Jesus. 00:09:16.439 --> 00:09:21.039 And I wonder that if in our familiar places we betray the Lord Jesus. 00:09:22.500 --> 00:09:24.699 Maybe not in the same way that Judas betrayed him. 00:09:25.419 --> 00:09:28.759 But I wonder if we betray him in another way. 00:09:28.759 --> 00:09:35.779 A man who had personally spent three years with the Lord Jesus, witnessing incredible miracles. 00:09:37.080
