We fall short of your glory. We fail in your purposes so often. 00:05:06.300 --> 00:05:17.300 But we thank you that your word directs our paths, and it leads us, Lord, to see the way to return through repentance, 00:05:17.300 --> 00:05:24.300 through coming to you by faith, that you are the one who is able to forgive our sins, 00:05:24.300 --> 00:05:35.300 and that you have made every provision for that, that you sent your own Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, into this world for sinners such as we are. 00:05:35.300 --> 00:05:41.300 That he came to gather his people and to draw them to himself. 00:05:41.300 --> 00:05:52.300 And we thank you that today and always that your spirit is working, that you are a God who is faithful, who is ever building his church. 00:05:52.300 --> 00:05:58.300 We are reminded in your word that your kingdom comes and comes with power. 00:05:58.300 --> 00:06:02.300 So we pray to know, Lord, your presence with us here today. 00:06:02.300 --> 00:06:05.300 We remember those tuning in online as well. 00:06:05.300 --> 00:06:15.300 We thank you that we offer up our praise and worship together, that we come with that great desire in our hearts to hear the living word, 00:06:15.300 --> 00:06:22.300 to hear of a glorious Savior, the one who bore our sins on the cross. 00:06:22.300 --> 00:06:37.300 And help us to focus on Jesus, to know him as a friend that stays closer than any brother, the one who is with us always, through the night and through the day, and through each and every day of our lives. 00:06:37.300 --> 00:06:44.300 May we come to put our trust in him and to seek to walk closely with him. 00:06:44.300 --> 00:06:48.300 We do thank you, Lord, for every reason of thanksgiving we have. 00:06:48.300 --> 00:06:55.300 We thank you that every good and perfect gift is from above and from the one who changes not. 00:06:55.300 --> 00:07:02.300 And so we thank you for your great faithfulness towards your people down through all the generations. 00:07:02.300 --> 00:07:09.300 That you are a God who has brought your people through so many experiences, highs and lows. 00:07:09.300 --> 00:07:17.300 As we look at your word, we are reminded so often of a people who have been blessed and a people who wander. 00:07:17.300 --> 00:07:23.300 But we thank you for the Spirit that guides and who helps us and leads us. 00:07:23.300 --> 00:07:28.300 We thank you for the way the gospel has come to our own land. 00:07:28.300 --> 00:07:33.300 We see it today as such a great privilege that has been here, we think, always. 00:07:33.300 --> 00:07:40.300 But we know it is a gospel that has come with great cost and a great price to many. 00:07:40.300 --> 00:07:42.300 Many were persecuted. 00:07:42.300 --> 00:07:45.300 Many gave their lives for your cause. 00:07:45.300 --> 00:07:50.300 And help us to remember that and not to take things for granted. 00:07:50.300 --> 00:07:57.300 For as we live in a world that is ever changing and there is animosity towards the gospel, 00:07:57.300 --> 00:07:59.300 there are great challenges in our own day. 00:07:59.300 --> 00:08:03.300 Help us that we will stand for your cause. 00:08:03.300 --> 00:08:13.300 That we will look to you to pour out your blessing on this place, upon our islands, upon our nation and upon the world. 00:08:13.300 --> 00:08:19.300 Lord, we thank you that all that seems impossible with imagine and understand. 00:14:22.299 --> 00:14:24.299 But God knows your name. 00:14:24.299 --> 00:14:26.299 And he knows everything about you. 00:14:26.299 --> 00:14:30.299 One of my favorite Psalms in the Bible is Psalm 139. 00:14:30.299 --> 00:14:35.299 And that Psalm tells us about the knowledge that God has about us. 00:14:35.299 --> 00:14:37.299 He knows everything about us. 00:14:37.299 --> 00:14:40.299 He knows our sitting down it says. 00:14:40.299 --> 00:14:41.299 Our rising up. 00:14:41.299 --> 00:14:43.299 He knows about everywhere we go. 00:14:43.299 --> 00:14:45.299 And it doesn't matter where we go in the world. 00:14:45.299 --> 00:14:49.299 Or how far away we might be from people we know and love. 00:14:49.299 --> 00:14:52.299 He knows and is there with us. 00:14:52.299 --> 00:14:54.299 Wherever we go he is with us. 00:14:54.299 --> 00:14:55.299 It says in the Psalm. 00:14:55.299 --> 00:14:59.299 Take eye the morning wings and dwell in utmost parts of sea. 00:14:59.299 --> 00:15:02.299 Even there Lord shall thy hand me lead. 00:15:02.299 --> 00:15:05.299 Thy right hand hold shall me. 00:15:05.299 --> 00:15:08.299 It's a great promise in God's word there. 00:15:08.299 --> 00:15:10.299 And that's our prayer for all the young people here. 00:15:10.299 --> 00:15:12.299 Indeed all of us here today. 00:15:12.299 --> 00:15:15.299 That we will get to know each other. 00:15:15.299 --> 00:15:17.299 And get to know one another's names. 00:15:17.299 --> 00:15:20.299 But above all that we'll remember the Lord. 00:15:20.299 --> 00:15:22.299 Who knows our Change is everywhere, but it's how we react in change and how we go forward 00:30:27.819 --> 00:30:34.259 in the midst of change that is important. And that's what I want to reflect on from this psalm 00:30:34.259 --> 00:30:42.160 together today. In this psalm, we see David reflecting in his own life and in the midst of all that he has 00:30:42.160 --> 00:30:49.019 seen changing in his own experience and in the experience of God's people and in the experience 00:30:49.019 --> 00:30:56.620 of the world around him. You read in verse 25 of this psalm, and it gives you an insight into the 00:30:56.620 --> 00:31:05.540 stage that the psalmist is at. He says, I have been young and now I'm old, yet I have not seen the 00:31:05.539 --> 00:31:18.279 righteous forsaken. David is able to look around in his old age and reflect on all the change that he 00:31:18.279 --> 00:31:27.619 has seen. But in it all, he is able to take confidence and to take heart in the midst of all 00:31:27.619 --> 00:31:36.139 of this change. As you read through this psalm, the theme from the outset is very clear where his main 00:31:36.139 --> 00:31:42.359 concerns of change that he has seen is taking place. The opening verse tells us, 00:31:42.879 --> 00:31:53.759 fret not yourself because of evildoers. Be not envious of wrongdoers. He's seeing the experience of God's 00:31:53.759 --> 00:32:00.160 people and his own experience of life as so often where it seems that those who have no thought of 00:32:00.160 --> 00:32:07.440 God, no interest in God or his ways, those who are committing evil and wrongdoings on a regular basis, 00:32:07.980 --> 00:32:15.059 they're the ones that seem to be prospering. They're the ones who seem to be getting on well. 00:32:15.779 --> 00:32:22.379 Whereas he may look on the lives of God's people and he will see many of them struggling. He's had his own 00:32:22.380 --> 00:32:30.500 struggles and he's seeing others who are struggling in many different ways. But his response to this is 00:32:30.500 --> 00:32:41.460 to call his people, God's people, to trust in the Lord. And he gives them a focus. And that focus 00:32:41.460 --> 00:32:51.680 is on the one who changes not. And so as we come together today, that is where our focus needs to be. 00:32:51.680 --> 00:32:58.440 As we look at the world around us or our own individual lives and all the anxieties, all the 00:32:58.440 --> 00:33:07.920 worries we may have, we come to focus on the one who changes not and to go forward together with our 00:33:07.920 --> 00:33:16.600 focus on him. There's a hymn that has this line in it that says, yesterday, today, forever, Jesus is the 00:33:16.599 --> 00:33:26.839 same. All may change, but Jesus never. Glory to his name. To go forward with that in mind, Jesus the 00:33:26.839 --> 00:33:35.079 same yesterday, today, and forever. He never changes that we may come to give glory to his name. 00:33:36.019 --> 00:33:43.480 So in verse 1 to verse 9 here, David gives a number of commands for God's people to follow. 00:33:43.480 --> 00:33:51.420 But there are four particular commands that he gives that give us a real sense of focus on the 00:33:51.420 --> 00:33:58.819 Lord. So wherever we are, whatever stage of life we are at today, whatever we are doing in life today, 00:33:59.440 --> 00:34:08.760 there is encouragement for us all to fix our eyes on the Lord and for Jesus to be our focus. 00:34:08.760 --> 00:34:17.140 And David gives us four direct commands that focus our attention on the Lord today. And it's these four 00:34:17.140 --> 00:34:25.780 commands I want us to think about briefly. There is the command to trust in the Lord. There is the command 00:34:25.780 --> 00:34:34.420 to delight yourself in the Lord. There is the command to commit your way to the Lord. And there is the command 00:34:34.420 --> 00:34:42.940 to be still before the Lord and wait on the Lord. So it's these four commands I want us to look at. First of all, 00:34:43.579 --> 00:34:45.220 trust in the Lord. 00:34:48.099 --> 00:34:55.920 The commands he gives are in light of the problems of an ever-changing world, where the wicked are 00:34:55.920 --> 00:35:05.500 prospering. And what is the problem that that causes for God's people? Well, as David opens the psalm, 00:35:05.680 --> 00:35:10.800 he reminds us, he tells us one of the greatest problems it gives to us. He says, 00:35:11.340 --> 00:35:21.099 fret not yourself because of evildoers. Do not be jealous or envious of wrongdoers. 00:35:21.099 --> 00:35:31.059 We can think of the word fret or fretting. And we think about maybe as being anxious or worried. 00:35:32.199 --> 00:35:37.880 And as we look at a world where so much change is taking place and so much evil seems to be around, 00:35:37.960 --> 00:35:46.019 and we think it makes us worried or anxious. But this word goes deeper than that. There is so much 00:35:46.019 --> 00:35:53.280 more to this word. It's a stronger word than just being anxious or worried. At the root of this word 00:35:53.280 --> 00:36:07.119 is anger, being angry. And it's an anger that is a burning hot anger, a rage, and a rage that consumes you. 00:36:08.280 --> 00:36:15.460 Now, there are times when we are rightfully angry about what happens in this world. There is a righteous 00:36:15.460 --> 00:36:24.559 anger. But there are other times when we can let anger consume us. And anger take our focus away 00:36:24.559 --> 00:36:32.119 from the Lord. And often throughout this psalm, as you read through it, this is highlighted for us, 00:36:32.240 --> 00:36:39.000 the danger of our anger consuming us. But even in our anger at what's happening, 00:36:39.000 --> 00:36:49.059 God, David, by the word of God, is telling us, fret not. Don't let your anger consume you. 00:36:49.699 --> 00:36:59.099 Because if you remain in an angry state, what does it do to you? It robs you of your joy. It robs you of 00:36:59.099 --> 00:37:06.019 your peace. It can paralyze you. And you are not effective in anything that you are doing. 00:37:06.019 --> 00:37:13.920 If you allow anger to consume you, it is not going to do you good. We can have a righteous anger 00:37:13.920 --> 00:37:21.219 about what we see, but it's what we do with that. And that's what David is guiding us to here. We may 00:37:21.219 --> 00:37:28.179 look around our own town here. We may look around our islands and all around us when we see change and 00:37:28.179 --> 00:37:32.079 evil going on. We may look around our own. We may look around our own. We may look around our own. 00:37:32.079 --> 00:37:39.419 But we don't want that anger to consume us. It is to begin 00:38:06.460 --> 00:38:17.539 by trusting in the Lord. Trust in the Lord and do good. Overcome evil by good, it says in another part 00:38:17.539 --> 00:38:23.219 of Scripture. Don't let your anger distract from the work that you are to do for the Lord, 00:38:23.219 --> 00:38:34.639 to go forward trusting in him. It is to walk by faith and not by sight. Even in our fretting, 00:38:34.939 --> 00:38:39.879 even in our anger, we must remember that even though things appear in our vision to be going 00:38:39.879 --> 00:38:47.659 completely out of control, that change may be hurting so many people, that God is in control. 00:38:47.659 --> 00:38:58.420 We are to look through the eyes of faith and to remember God is still working out his eternal 00:38:58.420 --> 00:39:10.039 purposes for us. We must learn to trust the Lord in all of life, to be angry but not consumed, 00:39:10.039 --> 00:39:19.460 and go forward trusting in the Lord. Martin Luther, the great reformer, who was used by God in such an 00:39:19.460 --> 00:39:28.239 amazing way to bring the church back in a right track. He spoke about what it meant to trust the Lord. 00:39:29.059 --> 00:39:33.480 And he said this in his own life story. He said, 00:39:33.480 --> 00:39:43.900 I have one preacher that I love better than any other on earth. And you may be expecting that this 00:39:43.900 --> 00:39:51.440 would be some man who's preaching God's word. Well, it wasn't. He said, I have one preacher that I love 00:39:51.440 --> 00:39:59.760 more than any other. It is my little tame robin, a little bird. And he said, this bird preaches to me 00:39:59.760 --> 00:40:07.460 daily about what it means to trust. But it's only temporary. Are you envious? Are you jealous of what 00:42:40.539 --> 00:42:46.800 others have in life without God when they seem to be getting on so well? Do you ever think, why am I 00:42:46.800 --> 00:42:53.800 struggling as a Christian? Why does nothing ever seem to go right in my life? These people who don't 00:42:53.800 --> 00:43:00.980 even trust God, everything is going right for them. My life could be so much different. There have been new members recently at a 00:52:54.840 --> 00:53:00.900 communion. There have been a number of baptisms and there's a couple to come yet. How difficult it is to pray when there's this burning anger in your heart.
