00:06:36.060 to convince us that we're sinners that desperately need the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior. 00:06:36.360 --> 00:06:40.160 And by the way, if we really don't come to grips with the 00:07:10.399 --> 00:07:14.120 completely furnished to all good works. 00:07:14.120 --> 00:07:23.620 It means that in that book that He has given to us is every piece of information and counsel And this must have been a provision by God because I arrived and helped, 00:08:00.620 --> 00:08:07.379 and actually it ended up where the pipe to reconnect the gas tank, 00:08:08.100 --> 00:08:10.900 there was a four-inch piece and there was a three-inch piece, 00:08:11.000 --> 00:08:13.420 and I was able to switch them out. 00:08:13.500 --> 00:08:15.300 It was like, wow, and it worked! understanding of the Word and your conscience. 00:08:40.320 --> 00:08:47.500 Now, as I take up this matter of where we are as a nation and believers, 00:08:47.700 --> 00:08:51.760 I'm reminded that my principal task is really not to speak about politics. 00:08:52.660 --> 00:08:57.940 I have under the glass right here a little statement that looks up at me every Sunday, 00:08:58.020 --> 00:08:58.980 and here's what it says. 00:08:59.379 --> 00:08:59.760 It says, 00:08:59.759 --> 00:09:05.399 Do you follow that? 00:09:05.799 --> 00:09:06.340 Right there. 00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:08.860 Right there. 00:09:09.679 --> 00:09:11.439 John 5, verse 39. 00:09:11.659 --> 00:09:14.139 How does this sermon testify to Christ? 00:09:14.139 --> 00:09:22.699 And I would like to think that the main reason that I've not given more time to politics in this pulpit 00:09:22.699 --> 00:09:26.279 is not because of fear or uncertainty of how it's going to be received, 00:09:26.539 --> 00:09:33.259 but really because sanctification, salvation, and our eternal hope is not rooted in what takes place in Washington, 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:40.679 but is rooted in the finished work of Christ and the certainty we have that He is the Savior of mankind. 00:09:40.679 --> 00:09:45.159 I have no intention of deviating from that purpose this morning. 00:09:46.259 --> 00:09:50.979 And so our study is going to be aimed, first of all, at some rather sober truth I think we need to come to grips with. 00:09:51.339 --> 00:09:53.179 Secondly, at some hope-filled truths. 00:09:53.479 --> 00:09:58.379 And then finally, a couple practical things that I think God wants us as believers to be engaged in. 00:09:58.439 --> 00:10:01.199 Let's talk, first of all, about some very sober truths. 00:10:01.200 --> 00:10:11.259 Politics is the arena in which worldviews come into conflict. 00:10:11.379 --> 00:10:12.060 Does that make sense? 00:10:13.020 --> 00:10:18.160 Politics is the arena in which worldviews come into conflict. 00:10:19.740 --> 00:10:28.540 You may wonder why it is that there is so much turmoil and tension today in politics. 00:10:28.539 --> 00:10:33.459 And I've got to tell you that when it really comes down to it, 00:10:33.519 --> 00:10:41.199 political parties and agendas propose blessings, peace, fairness, health, one way or another, 00:10:41.579 --> 00:10:45.519 and you end up with differing opinions about how that should be accomplished 00:10:45.519 --> 00:10:47.839 and what resources need to come to the table. 00:10:47.980 --> 00:10:50.559 And so I want to fix it in your mind at the very beginning. 00:10:50.559 --> 00:10:56.219 The fact of the matter is, is politics is an arena in which worldviews clash. 00:10:58.479 --> 00:11:05.519 And while we may be alarmed at the level of division and turmoil in America, 00:11:06.039 --> 00:11:10.899 I assure you that the problem is not unique to these shores or to our culture. 00:11:10.899 --> 00:11:14.319 I grew up in India. 00:11:15.620 --> 00:11:18.899 Never voted in an election in India, I can tell you that. 00:11:19.779 --> 00:11:28.220 And I can remember listening to the political turmoil of the community around me 00:11:28.220 --> 00:11:32.819 and recognizing that, you know what, I really, I didn't have anything to do with it. 00:11:33.039 --> 00:11:36.460 It was just like, ha, I'm hoping this season will pass. 00:11:36.460 --> 00:11:36.660 Yes. 00:11:38.160 --> 00:11:41.460 I was driving to church this morning and praying, 00:11:41.680 --> 00:11:46.780 and I couldn't help noticing all the signs that are in everybody's yard. 00:11:48.259 --> 00:11:53.600 It reminded me of a number of years ago when I was much younger and lived over on Angaro. 00:11:54.019 --> 00:11:59.080 One of the boys in our church took it upon himself like Saturday night. 00:11:59.180 --> 00:12:03.639 I don't know when it happened, but he went around, this perverse boy, 00:12:03.639 --> 00:12:08.659 went around and collected about 200 political signs. 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:13.220 And this is when I lived on Angaro, 1636, and I had the little orchard right out in the front there. 00:12:13.659 --> 00:12:18.699 My entire yard was filled with every conceivable sign. 00:12:19.100 --> 00:12:21.439 I mean, it's like I woke up in the morning and I'm having devotions. 00:12:21.539 --> 00:12:22.340 I'm like, what? 00:12:23.659 --> 00:12:26.000 I'd never, you know, it was a mess. 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:26.080 Yes. 00:12:28.019 --> 00:12:31.460 So I had to delay my devotions to get out there and pull all these And so we recognize that until Christ returns, you're going to see the clash of worldviews. 00:13:01.120 --> 00:13:05.600 With this in mind, let me point out several things that I think are worth remembering. 00:13:07.320 --> 00:13:09.960 For one, righteousness leads to blessing. 00:13:10.320 --> 00:13:12.720 Wickedness leads to much suffering. 00:13:12.720 --> 00:13:20.800 This is true whether you're talking about Africa or India or China or America or wherever. 00:13:22.300 --> 00:13:26.080 Look for a minute at a passage in Proverbs 29, verse 2. 00:13:27.660 --> 00:13:29.480 people who had shown up at the UN. 00:13:54.899 --> 00:13:58.979 And by the way, just so you know, there's a reason why I seldomly tell jokes. 00:14:00.519 --> 00:14:01.659 A couple reasons, actually. 00:14:01.740 --> 00:14:03.519 One of them, they seldom bear on the sermon. 00:14:03.659 --> 00:14:05.259 And number two, I don't do it very well. 00:14:05.299 --> 00:14:06.019 And that's thankful. 00:14:07.299 --> 00:14:08.659 You'll tell me afterwards how I did. 00:14:09.919 --> 00:14:17.139 There were several politicians from a couple different banana republics that showed up at the UN for, you know, 00:14:17.199 --> 00:14:19.779 one of those conflagrations that they had in conversations. 00:14:20.199 --> 00:14:22.459 And so they said to each other, trading business cards, 00:14:22.679 --> 00:14:24.639 Why don't you come and visit me in my country? 00:14:25.240 --> 00:14:26.759 Of course, I'll do that. 00:14:27.079 --> 00:14:31.679 And so, politician A, director of finance or whatever he was, 00:14:32.039 --> 00:14:36.620 finally decided to come and visit politician B, who was director of finance in whatever country. 00:14:36.620 --> 00:14:43.519 And as they're driving from the airport, going past all these nice properties and buildings and roads and everything. 00:14:43.940 --> 00:14:46.379 And the one, they're sitting in the back of the Mercedes. 00:14:46.600 --> 00:14:48.919 You know, I mean, if you're going to move around, you've got to do it comfortably. 00:14:49.120 --> 00:14:51.820 And the one nudges the other and says, You see all this? 00:14:53.279 --> politician A goes to visit politician B, lands there on a kind of broken down airport, 00:15:17.819 --> 00:15:21.059 and gets in the Mercedes, you know, and there's a fleet of them that take them. 00:15:21.559 --> 00:15:27.899 And as they're driving on down this dirt road, past these hovels, you know, 00:15:28.419 --> 00:15:31.919 the politician B bumps politician A and says, You see all this? 00:15:33.519 --> 00:15:34.000 90%. 00:15:34.000 --> 00:15:36.879 You see, here's the deal. 00:15:38.039 --> 00:15:43.179 Righteousness, no matter where it is, ends up being a blessing and a benefit to people. 00:15:45.100 --> 00:15:51.500 Ungodliness ends up causing heartache and compromise in any place that it is participated in. 00:15:51.500 --> 00:15:56.860 And what we are seeing happen in our country is something that should alarm us, 00:15:57.139 --> 00:16:03.120 because unrighteousness and ungodliness across the face is a threat. 00:16:04.000 --> 00:16:04.500 To people. 00:16:06.960 --> 00:16:11.039 Secondly, I have to tell you that many believers have compromised their role. 00:16:12.399 --> 00:16:15.340 I want you to look at Matthew chapter 13 just for a moment. 00:16:15.500 --> 00:16:17.980 Pay attention to the passage, Matthew chapter 13. 00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:20.620 Matthew chapter 5, that's what I meant. 00:16:20.700 --> 00:16:22.720 Matthew chapter 5, verse 13 through 16. 00:16:22.820 --> 00:16:24.360 Look at it in your Bible, if you would, please. 00:16:24.840 --> 00:16:27.820 I want you to track this passage where Jesus is making a comment. 00:16:27.820 --> 00:16:30.420 He says, 00:16:30.420 --> 00:16:31.740 You are the salt of the earth. 00:16:33.500 --> 00:16:38.560 But if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? 00:16:38.920 --> 00:16:43.860 It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. 00:16:46.620 --> 00:16:47.280 Now, listen to me. 00:16:47.279 --> 00:16:58.299 We're in a day and time where it doesn't matter what your political affections are. 00:16:59.299 --> 00:17:04.460 It doesn't matter what your perspective is on the economy. 00:17:05.240 --> 00:17:13.859 There is a common and universal acceptance that there is a progressive rottenness taking place in our culture. 00:17:13.920 --> 00:17:14.420 Isn't that right? 00:17:14.420 --> 00:17:16.039 It's a mess. talking about the fact that they're watching the same crass, ungodly, vile, 00:17:45.579 --> 00:17:49.360 you know, what's the word I want to use here? 00:17:49.720 --> 00:17:51.019 Violent movies. 00:17:52.059 --> 00:17:54.680 Their entertainment is no different than the unbeliever. 00:17:55.680 --> 00:17:58.099 They laugh at the same crude jokes at work. 00:17:58.099 --> 00:18:03.099 They really use the same vocabulary except when they're in the church lobby. 00:18:04.859 --> 00:18:06.299 I don't know if you understand what I'm saying. 00:18:07.579 --> 00:18:12.399 At the end of the repentance? 00:19:09.800 --> 00:19:14.440 I think it's in Ecclesiastes, and off the top of my head, it says this, 00:19:14.540 --> 00:19:18.700 because judgment for an evil deed is not speedily what's going on. 00:20:11.240 --> 00:20:17.259 I think God's in the process of dealing with our nation. 00:20:18.720 --> 00:20:22.759 And so you ask yourself, what are some of the things that really,
