covers about two years during which Abner and Saul's son Ish-bosheth fight a civil war with David and his commander Joab. 00:09:20.620 --> 00:09:26.819 Most of the action happens between the two sides in Gibeon, which is a short distance from Hebron where David is. 00:09:27.319 --> 00:09:33.500 And a longer trip for Abner and his men, who you might remember from last week, are up north in a place called Mahanaheim. 00:09:34.139 --> 00:09:39.259 Now, my intention this morning, you will be pleased to know, is not to walk through these verses verse by verse. 00:09:39.259 --> 00:09:41.679 That would mean that we would all miss lunch. 00:09:41.819 --> 00:09:51.319 Instead, what I want us to do is just to take a closer look at the three main characters, Abner, Joab and David, and see what they have to say to us today. 00:09:51.419 --> 00:09:53.080 So let's start with Abner. 00:09:53.899 --> 00:09:55.840 Now, I don't know how you might imagine Abner. 00:09:55.960 --> 00:09:57.720 This is what Wikipedia thinks he looks like. 00:09:57.720 --> 00:10:00.779 The guy in green, shown in a medieval Bible. 00:10:02.040 --> 00:10:04.060 I'm not guessing he probably didn't look anything like that. 00:10:04.139 --> 00:10:06.259 He has an impossibly thin waist for a soldier. 00:10:07.120 --> 00:10:10.440 And he's wearing armor over his mouth while speaking to the king. 00:10:10.560 --> 00:10:11.879 So I'm sure that's not the case. 00:10:12.500 --> 00:10:18.180 But whatever he might have looked like, we know that he was a stubborn and proud man. 00:10:18.420 --> 00:10:20.620 We found that last week, didn't we? 00:10:20.620 --> 00:10:26.299 For some reason, he wouldn't give up the fight with David, even though he knew he had clearly lost. 00:10:26.980 --> 00:10:33.399 And this week, we find out that as well as being stubborn, he is also quite shrewd and wise. 00:10:34.620 --> 00:10:41.600 In fact, the verb most commonly used of Abner in the passage this morning is the verb to say or set. 00:10:42.080 --> 00:10:43.100 Now, that might sound a bit boring. 00:10:43.100 --> 00:10:47.940 But the point is that every time you meet Abner in the story, he is negotiating. 00:11:10.600 --> 00:11:16.180 And in the first scene is this, the pool of Gibeon, down at chapter 2, verse 14. 00:11:16.920 --> 00:11:25.200 Abner's plan here is that instead of a full-blown war, that he would find people who would have a duel in front of them and try and settle it that way. 00:11:25.820 --> 00:11:27.200 Verse 14 of chapter 2. 00:11:27.320 --> 00:11:31.820 Then Abner said to Jab, let's have some of the young men get up and fight hand-to-hand in front of us. 00:11:32.200 --> 00:11:34.040 All right, says Jab, let them do it. 00:11:35.820 --> 00:11:36.940 Anyway, it doesn't really work. 00:11:36.940 --> 00:11:42.400 It was a clever idea, but in the 12 fights, there's no winner because they both die at exactly the same time. 00:11:43.600 --> 00:11:44.900 Each of them killing the other. 00:11:46.800 --> 00:11:48.960 It then ensues that a big battle follows. 00:11:49.100 --> 00:11:51.820 In verse 17, it's a battle that Abner and his men lose. 00:11:51.920 --> 00:11:58.520 And in the next scene, you find Abner on the run at the end of that battle from a guy called Ashael, who is trying to kill him. 00:11:58.519 --> 00:12:04.879 Now Ashael, you might remember from the reading, is Joab's brother, and he is a fast runner. 00:12:06.379 --> 00:12:10.620 Thinking, I guess, that if he kills Abner, then the whole thing will be over. 00:12:10.720 --> 00:12:13.740 So Ashael is chasing him down and is not giving up. 00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:15.939 Now Abner knows he's in trouble. 00:12:17.039 --> 00:12:19.519 Ashael is a famous runner of the time. 00:12:19.519 --> 00:12:24.500 And he doesn't appear to be carrying any weapons either, while Abner, it seems, is loaded down with them. 00:12:25.399 --> 00:12:32.559 So imagine that this is Usain Bolt chasing you down, and you've got your school bag on and your school shoes on, and he's in his running gear. 00:12:33.019 --> 00:12:34.340 You are stuffed. 00:12:34.519 --> 00:12:36.019 He is going to catch up with you. 00:12:36.559 --> 00:12:42.299 So Abner knows that, and he's trying to wheedle his way out of it with words, calling out in verse 21, saying, 00:12:42.299 --> 00:12:43.599 Turn aside! 00:12:44.339 --> 00:12:47.000 You know, stop chasing me, he says. 00:12:47.799 --> 00:12:54.019 Now of course, Abner knows that killing Ashael would be a bad move, because it would make Joab hate him even more. 00:12:54.399 --> 00:13:01.319 But Ashael won't give up the chase, and so he gets killed by Abner, who seems to just stop him with the butt end of his spear. 00:13:01.679 --> 00:13:03.419 And Ashael runs through it. 00:13:03.899 --> 00:13:05.139 Kind of gross story. 00:13:05.139 --> 00:13:14.519 Moving on, in the story, Abner is speaking again, negotiating in verse 26 to persuade Joab and his army to stop pursuing the Israelites who they're beaten. 00:13:15.659 --> 00:13:19.939 He says, you know, if you don't do it, this will end in bitterness, he says. 00:13:20.639 --> 00:13:23.319 The final words to notice are with King Ish-bosheth. 00:13:23.659 --> 00:13:31.399 Ish-bosheth, if you remember, is Saul's son, who's been installed as king over the northern tribes, while David is just ruling over Judah. 00:13:31.399 --> 00:13:38.659 Importantly, if you look down at chapter 3, verse 6, you'll tell us that Abner is getting stronger and stronger in the northern kingdom. 00:13:38.740 --> 00:13:44.100 He's not the king, but he is in charge of the army, and he is growing in strength. 00:13:44.819 --> 00:13:49.079 This is surprising to King Ish-bosheth, and he doesn't like it. 00:13:49.379 --> 00:13:56.579 He feels threatened by Abner, so he accuses Abner of taking one of Saul's concubines as his own. 00:13:56.580 --> 00:14:02.700 Presumably, I guess, in order to try and take over some legitimate claim to the throne. 00:14:03.280 --> 00:14:04.740 That's what Ish-bosheth thinks. 00:14:05.379 --> 00:14:07.540 Anyway, Abner goes mad at the accusation. 00:14:07.660 --> 00:14:10.920 He says, you know, am I a dog's head, he asks. 00:14:11.220 --> 00:14:14.259 As in, am I really a dirty dog betrayer? 00:14:14.300 --> 00:14:15.980 Is that what you think of me, he says. 00:14:16.940 --> 00:14:18.780 And then he says, I've changed my mind. 00:14:18.920 --> 00:14:22.660 I will make David king, he says, in effect, in verse 9. 00:14:22.659 --> 00:14:32.299 Now, we could say more about Abner, but the point to notice is that Abner is always speaking, always negotiating, the man with a plan, trying to negotiate terms. 00:14:32.620 --> 00:14:38.179 He even thinks it's within his power to make David king over the whole of Israel. 00:14:39.339 --> 00:14:42.779 But in the end of the story, Abner is dead. 00:14:43.199 --> 00:14:47.419 He's murdered by Joab and Abishai as revenge for Ashel's life. 00:14:47.419 --> 00:14:53.299 Now, in this song that David sings about Abner, he calls him a great man in chapter 3, verse 38. what is as the lawless die, he says in verse 33, which really is the word for fool. 00:15:07.559 --> 00:15:10.120 He dies a fool's death in the end. 00:15:10.439 --> 00:15:12.099 The end is bitter for to negotiate his way out of it. 00:16:28.580 --> 00:16:34.980 He'd be the voice of reason in the family argument who always gets his own way, be the guy who always seems to land on his feet. 00:16:46.200 Ashel, I think, would have been better off listening to Abner, probably. 00:16:46.860 --> 00:16:54.100 But the point of the story is not that Abner's ideas are rubbish, but that for all in the story is that Joab is calling Abner back to the city of refuge and he kills him in the city of refuge in revenge for killing Ashel, seemingly in accident in self-defense with the butt of his spear. 00:19:57.539 --> 00:20:12.500 It explains, I think, why David is so mad with Joab in verse 29 and curses his whole family, a curse which does eventually get carried out by David's son Solomon, make sure you don't miss it. 00:24:08.299 --> 00:24:16.039 The tear-filled David does what a brute strongman and a political negotiator could not do. 00:24:16.039 --> 00:24:18.659 Now, why is that the story? 00:24:19.559 --> 00:24:24.859 Now, let me tell you that the point of the story is not, so therefore be gentle like David. 00:24:25.059 --> 00:24:26.740 I mean, that is not a bad idea, right? 00:24:26.899 --> 00:24:28.559 Gentleness has a lot to commend it. 00:24:28.819 --> 00:24:31.899 We could all do with being more gentle, and I'm sure of that. 00:24:31.900 --> 00:24:36.340 But the point of the story is not so much try hard to be a little bit more like David. 00:24:36.680 --> 00:24:42.420 Rather, the story is about this extraordinary power given to a gentle king. 00:24:43.580 --> 00:24:51.820 God's people will not be united by human force or skill, but by the gentleness of God's king. 00:24:51.819 --> 00:25:01.119 Here, you get in 2 Samuel chapter 3, you get a glimpse of what God can do through the tears of his king. 00:25:02.539 --> 00:25:07.799 I think one of the struggles that we have with these stories in the Bible is that they feel so different, don't they, to 00:25:17.859 But these ancient Bible stories have a greater purpose, don't they? 00:25:17.859 --> 00:25:21.639 They are pointing us to the bigger story of the Bible. 00:25:22.220 --> 00:25:24.599 The because although we are different to them, we are in the same big story of what God is doing. 00:25:35.980 --> 00:25:42.679 So we, like them, find that actually our main battle is not with the other saying stuff. 00:26:48.620 --> 00:26:52.080 You can't pray enough prayers or say enough creeds. 00:26:52.680 --> 00:26:56.720 You can't end this conflict with human strength either. 00:26:57.039 --> 00:26:59.620 You can't fight your way to peace with God. 00:27:00.620 --> 00:27:06.660 Instead, the decisive victory in this great war of history will be in the gentle weakness 00:27:06.660 --> I'm not here with a stick to beat you. 00:27:44.980 --> 00:27:47.339 I'm not here with a list of demands for you to keep. 00:27:47.659 --> 00:27:56.859 I'm here with tears in my eyes, with nails in my hands and my feet, in brokenness for your sin. 00:27:57.399 --> 00:28:02.639 I will conquer your heart with love and gentleness, forgiveness and grace. 00:28:02.640 --> 00:28:05.820 Now, there's so much you could say about that, isn't there? 00:28:05.840 --> 00:28:10.840 But I think the big point for us to see from chapter 3 is how this gentleness of David 00:28:10.840 --> 00:28:14.740 sort of lures in and draws in the people of Israel. 00:28:15.420 --> 00:28:16.280 You notice that? 00:28:16.759 --> 00:28:20.340 You know, it's in 2 Samuel 3 as the people see the tears of the king. 00:28:20.740 --> 00:28:25.860 They listen to his lament that they are sort of pulled towards him, drawn towards him, 00:28:26.500 --> 00:28:30.280 dropping their swords and their hostility, seeing in him someone they can trust and follow. 00:28:30.279 --> 00:28:35.700 And so with the Lord Jesus, I don't know what you imagine him to be like, 00:28:36.119 --> 00:28:38.279 but he's not yelling and cursing at you. 00:28:38.799 --> 00:28:41.079 He's not battering you for your rebellion against him. 00:28:41.180 --> 00:28:48.480 Instead, you find Jesus in the Gospels as a gentle saviour who dies for your sin. 00:28:49.680 --> 00:28:53.859 Jesus is not strong and impressive in any conventional way, but not because he's soft, 00:28:55.000 --> 00:28:58.279 but because he's drawing us to himself amazing. 00:29:44.279 --> 00:29:52.119 But then there's the gentle King David who is weeping over the brokenness and offers you peace and kindness. 00:29:53.000 --> 00:29:53.579 Who are you going to
