And you may not be aware of this, 00:03:43.340 --> 00:03:51.400 but your church has been on my heart for a number of years. George has shared with me the story of 00:03:51.400 --> 00:03:58.039 the Church of the Messiah. And it was about 12 years ago that we were actually gathered in the offices of 00:03:58.039 --> 00:04:04.759 your church. And it was then that the Gospel Coalition in Canada got formed. And so I've had a 00:04:04.759 --> 00:04:11.939 deep appreciation for this ministry for years and the part that it has played in forming a movement 00:04:11.939 --> 00:04:18.959 that is nationwide. And praise God for that. Well, as was mentioned, I was the speaker at the Dig and 00:04:18.959 --> 00:04:27.000 Delve conference this past weekend. And it was my privilege to do so, to be there. And I'm grateful to 00:04:27.000 --> 00:04:32.620 God for the opportunity to speak then and for the opportunity to share with you this morning from 00:04:32.620 --> 00:04:38.379 God's Word. The passage of Scripture that was read, Luke chapter 13, is the text that I would like to 00:04:38.379 --> 00:04:44.019 speak to you from. And if you have a Bible or you have a Bible app on your phone, you may want to just 00:04:44.019 --> 00:04:53.860 turn there at this point in time. Luke chapter 13, verses 10 through 17. There's a short verse in 00:04:53.860 --> 00:05:04.060 Luke chapter 6, which refers to Jesus healing people who were troubled by evil spirits. Sometimes 00:05:04.060 --> 00:05:11.420 that's translated tormented by evil spirits. The word torment is a bit strong. The word troubled is 00:05:11.420 --> 00:05:17.660 probably something that we can all imagine. We can all get our heads around that. To be tormented by 00:05:17.660 --> 00:05:24.080 evil spirits would be to suffer in an incredible way. But either way, these were individuals afflicted 00:05:24.080 --> 00:05:32.020 by the demonic. And interestingly, this is a theme. It's a theme in the Gospel of Luke, one of Luke's 00:05:32.020 --> 00:05:39.620 themes. As Dr. Luke sat down, inspired by the Holy Spirit to write this, this is one of the themes that 00:05:39.620 --> 00:05:46.200 the Holy Spirit guided him to speak on or to write on. We know that there are a number of stories in the 00:05:46.199 --> 00:05:53.800 three Gospels, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, in which Jesus is involved in casting out or driving out evil 00:05:53.800 --> 00:06:03.419 spirits out of people. There are actually 22 references to this in Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Now, seven of 00:06:03.419 --> 00:06:09.899 those are just general summaries of what Jesus did. They just simply said that this is what he was doing, 00:06:09.899 --> 00:06:16.939 and he was also healing people and preaching. But there are another seven more specific accounts 00:06:16.939 --> 00:06:24.019 where a little bit of a story is there concerning the individuals out of whom he cast spirits. 00:06:25.379 --> 00:06:34.179 And there are four where we have a very detailed analysis of what actually happened. And Luke chapter 13 00:06:34.180 --> 00:06:42.740 is one of those four. Here we have a very specific account of what Jesus did. Now, interestingly, 00:06:43.519 --> 00:06:52.420 this is the only record of this story, and it's recorded by Luke. Some of the other Gospel writers 00:06:52.420 --> 00:07:00.360 pick up on the same stories, and they give their slant or their perspective on what Jesus did. But this 00:07:00.360 --> 00:07:08.759 one is found only in the Gospel of Luke. And interestingly, it is the last account in the Gospels 00:07:08.759 --> 00:07:20.240 of Jesus casting out demons. Now, Luke, as we know, was a physician. He had a medical mind. And so he was 00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:28.759 very interested in the healing miracles of Jesus. He actually gives a diagnosis. He describes the healings 00:07:28.759 --> 00:07:37.980 in a way that only a doctor could. And this one is different in that this is a healing that involves 00:07:37.980 --> 00:07:45.879 an evil spirit. And Luke mentions that here. Now, here's what I want to do today. I want to approach 00:07:45.879 --> 00:07:51.860 this passage in three different ways. First of all, as I speak, you will notice I'm going to make some 00:07:51.860 --> 00:07:57.279 what I would call observations. In other words, we're going to see what actually happened. 00:07:57.279 --> 00:08:04.659 In the midst of the observations, the second thing I'm going to do is to give some explanations, 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:11.599 to share some interpretation, or we might call them insights as to what we are observing in the 00:08:11.599 --> 00:08:16.419 passage. And then right at the end, we're going to go to the application piece. And I want to give 00:08:16.419 --> 00:08:24.739 you three takeaways that I think we can apply to our lives today from this passage. So I want you to see 00:08:24.740 --> 00:08:33.840 here first of all what I'm calling the binding work of Satan, the binding work of the evil one. Now, 00:08:33.879 --> 00:08:44.940 this is an ugly, ugly truth, that Satan has the ability to afflict the human body, to bind the human body. 00:08:44.940 --> 00:08:54.820 In other words, to incapacitate a human being from a lesser to an even greater degree. And he does this 00:08:54.820 --> 00:09:02.460 through evil spirits, through demons. This is exactly what it says here in verse 11. There was a woman 00:09:02.460 --> 00:09:10.260 when Jesus was there in the synagogue teaching, who had been, it says in my translation, the New International 00:09:10.259 --> 00:09:19.439 Version, crippled by a spirit for 18 years. In the passage that was read, which we had on the screen from the 00:09:19.439 --> 00:09:26.860 English Standard Version, it says that she had a disabling spirit. The New American Standard Bible says it was a 00:09:26.860 --> 00:09:35.019 sickness caused by an evil spirit. And the old King James Version of the Bible refers to this as a spirit of 00:09:35.019 --> 00:09:43.039 infirmity. Now, what I want you to do, this is an important thing. I want you to, it's important that 00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:53.919 you allow right now this ugly truth to settle into your minds. Don't allow this ugly truth to pass you by. 00:09:53.919 --> 00:09:59.279 I don't know how you're like when you're watching the news, but when Russia initially invaded the Ukraine, 00:09:59.279 --> 00:10:05.240 I was on the news constantly hearing everything that was going on. When this horrific attack happened 00:10:05.240 --> 00:10:11.839 in Israel, and now the fighting that's happening in Gaza, I was focused on the news constantly. I wanted 00:10:11.839 --> 00:10:17.339 all the information of the ugliness of what was going on. But I'm at the point now where I just kind 00:10:17.339 --> 00:10:24.519 of turn it off. Don't want to hear it anymore. So I don't want you to do that now. I want you to allow 00:10:24.519 --> 00:10:33.559 this truth, this ugly truth to settle into your mind. Don't let it pass by. Satan is able to bind 00:10:33.559 --> 00:10:42.039 and incapacitate human beings. I want you to notice also in the passage that 00:10:42.039 --> 00:10:54.360 Luke identifies this not as a sickness or an illness only. To put it this way, she did not have 00:10:54.360 --> 00:11:05.399 just an infirmity. She did not just have an illness. She did not just have a debilitating physical 00:11:05.399 --> 00:11:15.120 condition. That's not what Luke focuses on. Luke tells us, and he stresses this, that this was a spirit 00:11:15.120 --> 00:11:26.419 that crippled her. It was something outside of her body that had entered her body. It was attached to her body. 00:11:27.779 --> 00:11:35.279 Now, I'm emphasizing that because there are a number of paraphrases that have been written on this passage 00:11:35.279 --> 00:11:42.580 or written on the whole Bible. And unfortunately, those paraphrases of the Bible actually lead us 00:11:42.580 --> 00:11:50.220 astray and don't give us accurate information as to what happened here. For example, the J.B. Phillips 00:11:50.220 --> 00:11:57.360 paraphrase of God's word is a paraphrase that I have used for years. I love to read it. 00:11:58.080 --> 00:12:04.940 It brings some incredible insight into what actually happened in more modern words. But on this text, 00:12:04.940 --> 00:12:13.940 the Phillips translation is inaccurate and misleading because it refers to this woman as suffering from a 00:12:13.940 --> 00:12:22.920 psychological cause. All in the mind. The Living Bible does the same thing and says that she was 00:12:22.920 --> 00:12:31.140 seriously handicapped. And that's all it says. And so that gives to us the impression that this was just a 00:12:31.139 --> 00:12:38.480 physical ailment that the woman had. This was just something mental. But Luke makes it clear that the 00:12:38.480 --> 00:12:46.639 root is not physiological and the root is not psychological. The root of her difficulty was 00:12:46.639 --> 00:12:54.419 spiritual. And we have to underscore this truth that the Bible actually makes a distinction between 00:12:54.419 --> 00:13:02.059 illnesses that are physical or mental and those that are spiritual in nature. For example, in Mark 00:13:02.059 --> 00:13:10.439 chapter 1, verses 32 through 34, we have one of those little summaries of what Jesus did. And it refers to 00:13:10.439 --> 00:13:18.000 him healing people of diseases. And then it says, and he cast out demons. In other words, there were people who 00:13:18.000 --> 00:13:27.659 were just physically, psychologically sick. And then there were people who were spiritually sick. They had demons. 00:13:28.379 --> 00:13:36.620 And Mark makes it clear that Jesus healed both groups. The same thing as we find in Matthew chapter 10, 00:13:36.779 --> 00:13:45.419 where Jesus gives authority to the disciples to go and to cast out demons and to heal the sick. And in Matthew 10, 00:13:45.419 --> 00:14:04.360 it's very, very clear. It says they had authority to cast out demons. And, and it says, and every kind of disease and sickness. So the Bible makes a distinction between the two. And Luke, as a physician, 00:14:04.360 --> 00:14:15.360 was able to discern that there is a difference also. So here in chapter 13, we see Satan's work. 00:14:15.419 --> 00:14:24.839 And this work is done through evil spirits. Now, it says here she was, she was crippled by a spirit. 00:14:25.360 --> 00:14:33.860 And I'm going to pick up on the old authorized version phrase, a spirit of infirmity. In other words, this was a particular 00:14:33.860 --> 00:14:44.259 kind of demon. This was a demon that specialized in this particular work. And I emphasize that because in Mark 00:14:44.259 --> 00:14:53.799 chapter 9, we have another story of, of a little boy who has a demon, and the father is distraught over the, over the state of his son. 00:14:53.879 --> 00:15:00.519 And he brings his son to the Lord Jesus Christ. Well, first, he brought his son to the disciples of Christ. 00:15:01.179 --> 00:15:08.159 Jesus was up on the mount of transfiguration with Peter, James, and John, and the other nine disciples had 00:15:08.159 --> 00:15:15.159 remained below. And it was these nine that the man approached. And he asked them to deal with these evil 00:15:15.159 --> 00:15:22.039 spirits. And they tried, but they couldn't. Then Jesus came down off the mountain. And immediately, he was 00:15:22.039 --> 00:15:29.199 able to set this little boy free. The disciples went to Jesus afterwards and said, Lord, why couldn't we do it? 00:15:29.200 --> 00:15:34.480 And it's, it's a good question that they asked because Jesus had already given them prior to this 00:15:34.480 --> 00:15:41.700 authority to drive out demons. But this time they were stumped and couldn't do it. And Jesus said to 00:15:41.700 --> 00:15:49.500 them, this kind comes out only by prayer. Meaning there are different kinds of demons and some are more 00:15:49.500 --> 00:15:57.160 stronger than others. Just as we know that some human beings are stronger than others. There are different 00:15:57.159 --> 00:16:03.919 kinds of demons. Just as we know there are different kinds of angels. We know that God's angels are, 00:16:04.179 --> 00:16:12.059 some of them bring a message. Some of them protect. Some of them are warriors. They are described in 00:16:12.059 --> 00:16:20.179 different ways and sometimes given different names. And the same is true in the spirit world when it comes 00:16:20.179 --> 00:16:26.339 to demons. Sometimes demons are called evil or unclean spirits. 00:16:27.159 --> 00:16:34.139 Which speaks of their essential nature. That's what they really are. They are evil. And everything 00:16:34.139 --> 00:16:42.539 they do is evil. And everything they produce is evil. Sometimes the Bible refers to evil spirits as being 00:16:42.539 --> 00:16:51.179 familiar spirits. And this is normally associated with an occultic work of consulting the dead, a spiritist 00:16:51.179 --> 00:17:00.079 or a medium who is going to help you to speak to the dead, the so-called dead. And this is a familiar 00:17:00.079 --> 00:17:11.419 spirit. People who do that kind of thing have familiar spirits. In Matthew 9, there was another man and he 00:17:11.420 --> 00:17:18.400 had a deaf and a mute spirit. Another kind of spirit. And in Ephesians 6, the apostle Paul tells us 00:17:18.400 --> 00:17:23.940 that our struggle is not against flesh and blood. It's not a physical battle that we're engaged in as 00:17:23.940 --> 00:17:33.279 believers. But it's against the rulers, the authorities, the powers, and the spiritual forces of this world. 00:17:33.279 --> 00:17:40.660 I used to think that Paul was just sort of using different words to explain the same kind of 00:17:40.660 --> 00:17:49.240 beings. But I think he's actually describing a hierarchy of evil spirits and the spiritual forces 00:17:49.240 --> 00:17:56.819 of evil that are on this earth. Now Luke records this for us and he gives special attention to it 00:17:56.819 --> 00:18:04.119 and he diagnoses what the problem is. And he makes it very, very clear that this was not a physiological 00:18:04.119 --> 00:18:14.419 or a psychological issue. The reason why this woman was crippled, bent over, literally bent over 00:18:14.419 --> 00:18:22.159 physically was because of an evil spirit. Now if we were to see someone like this today, 00:18:22.160 --> 00:18:28.120 we would probably look at them and think, well they need an operation. There's some kind of a 00:18:28.120 --> 00:18:36.360 physical deformity. Perhaps there was an accident. Perhaps the person was born that way. We would 00:18:36.360 --> 00:18:43.900 think they need a chiropractor at least or an operation at most. And most of us would conclude 00:18:43.900 --> 00:18:51.980 immediately that this is just a physical issue. But Luke tells us it was an evil, 00:18:52.160 --> 00:18:58.480 spirit. Now I want you to notice verse 17 because in the discourse that takes place between Jesus 00:18:58.480 --> 00:19:09.100 and the synagogue ruler, Jesus says concerning this woman, verse 16, then should not this woman, 00:19:09.220 --> 00:19:16.840 a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has kept bound for 18 long years. So at the beginning of the story, 00:19:16.839 --> 00:19:25.619 Luke says it was a spirit. At the end of the story, Jesus says it is Satan. Now this gives us some 00:19:25.619 --> 00:19:31.639 help. It gives us some information about who the devil really is or what the devil is really like. 00:19:32.779 --> 00:19:40.359 And we need to say this, that he is not omnipresent. Satan cannot be everywhere at all time like God can. 00:19:40.359 --> 00:19:49.879 Some of us make the mistake of thinking that Satan has equal attributes to God, but he doesn't. 00:19:51.399 --> 00:19:58.539 He is not omnipresent and he is not an omnipotent being. He is a limited being. Even though the Bible 00:19:58.539 --> 00:20:05.859 calls him the God of this world, but we need to keep this in mind. When Paul describes Satan, 00:20:05.859 --> 00:20:11.639 the devil, as the God of this world, he does not mean that Satan is in control of everything in our 00:20:11.639 --> 00:20:18.719 world because our God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords. And the world is in his hands. That 00:20:18.719 --> 00:20:26.199 old chorus, he's got the whole world in his hands is true. But what it does mean is that the whole world 00:20:26.199 --> 00:20:32.579 is following the way of the devil because he is, according to Paul in Ephesians 2, the spirit 00:20:32.579 --> 00:20:40.879 who is now working in those who are disobedient, those who do not believe in Christ. He's the spirit 00:20:40.879 --> 00:20:48.379 who works in them. He is, in that sense, the deceiver of the whole world. But keep this in mind. 00:20:49.379 --> 00:20:59.359 He can only carry on his deceiving work and his so-called godlike work through his demons. And yes, 00:20:59.359 --> 00:21:08.659 his work is worldwide. But it is only through evil spirits who are posted and planted throughout 00:21:08.659 --> 00:21:16.939 the world. His binding work is through demons. He uses evil spirits to fasten onto the bodies 00:21:16.939 --> 00:21:25.459 of individuals and to cause this type of problem in their lives. Evil spirits are nothing more than 00:21:25.460 --> 00:21:33.500 representatives of Satan. And it is his work, Satan's work, that evil spirits do. 00:21:34.759 --> 00:21:42.079 Now in our second reading today, there was an identification of demons with Satan. And this 00:21:42.079 --> 00:21:48.980 man who was possessed by a demon that caused him to be blind and to be mute. And Jesus delivered 00:21:48.980 --> 00:21:57.180 the man of that demon and healed him. The Pharisees get all upset. Jesus is casting out demons by the 00:21:57.180 --> 00:22:03.519 prince of demons by Beelzebul. That was the accusation that they brought against the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:22:05.220 --> 00:22:12.059 And Jesus said, if Satan drives out Satan, he's divided against himself. In other words, 00:22:12.059 --> 00:22:19.679 to cast out Satan is to cast out demons. To cast out demons is to cast out Satan. Because demons are 00:22:19.679 --> 00:22:27.220 nothing more than representatives of Satan himself. Now there's another thing here I want you to see 00:22:27.220 --> 00:22:37.539 in this text. Another very important thing concerning the binding work of Satan. Excuse me. 00:22:37.539 --> 00:22:53.700 This woman was still able to attend the synagogue and worship. She was there. That's very clear in verse 10 and 11. 00:22:54.960 --> 00:23:01.700 She was physically hindered, there's no doubt. Probably there was a lot of pain associated with what she was, 00:23:01.700 --> 00:23:11.920 with her condition. But she was able to get out. She was able to attend. She was able to be there and hear the scriptures read. 00:23:12.259 --> 00:23:19.240 She was able to worship God. She was able to function to some degree in her life. 00:23:20.600 --> 00:23:26.180 And I think this is a very, very important observation that I'm trying to make to you this morning. 00:23:26.180 --> 00:23:34.480 Because many of us have stereotypes in our minds as to what a person with evil spirits looks like. 00:23:35.180 --> 00:23:38.039 How they behave. How they act. 00:23:38.900 --> 00:23:41.779 But the Bible gives us a very, very different picture. 00:23:42.580 --> 00:23:47.640 You see, we think if people have demons, then they only go out when there's a full moon. 00:23:47.640 --> 00:23:52.440 Or there's really bizarre kinds of behavior. 00:23:52.640 --> 00:23:54.840 They dress and look like vampires. 00:23:55.680 --> 00:23:59.620 Or they're social recluses and they want to get away from everyone. 00:24:00.900 --> 00:24:02.980 And there's always bizarre behavior. 00:24:05.340 --> 00:24:07.640 But the Bible gives us a very different picture. 00:24:09.580 --> 00:24:11.460 And experience tells us the same. 00:24:11.460 --> 00:24:16.860 Again, I make reference to the story in Mark 9 with the father, with the son. 00:24:17.220 --> 00:24:19.700 And he says that, he said about his son, he says, 00:24:19.819 --> 00:24:22.980 Sometimes, he said, the spirit seizes him. 00:24:23.460 --> 00:24:25.700 And throws him into fire and into water. 00:24:26.180 --> 00:24:28.519 Sometimes he acts in a suicidal way. 00:24:29.220 --> 00:24:30.920 When the spirit seizes him. 00:24:31.000 --> 00:24:34.720 Meaning, the spirit doesn't seize him all the time. 00:24:35.759 --> 00:24:39.340 Meaning there are times when my son is normal. 00:24:39.339 --> 00:24:42.459 There are times when I enjoy him. 00:24:43.159 --> 00:24:45.619 And my father-son relationship with him. 00:24:45.740 --> 00:24:48.500 Because he's a normal little boy. 00:24:49.480 --> 00:24:50.959 But then it seizes him. 00:24:52.459 --> 00:24:58.740 Again, we have to get out of our mind this stereotype that it's always bizarre. 00:25:00.039 --> 00:25:04.339 But even this little boy was able to function like a little boy from time to time. 00:25:05.539 --> 00:25:08.579 The same story we have in Mark chapter 1. 00:25:08.579 --> 00:25:12.000 That after Jesus was tempted by Satan for 40 days. 00:25:12.240 --> 00:25:14.199 Jesus Where we have an individual who, in our thinking at least, fits all the stereotypes of what a person would be like if they have demons. 00:26:21.440 --> 00:26:27.059 A man who was locked away, as it were, in chains because of superhuman strength. 00:26:28.139 --> 00:26:33.119 And cast out to live in a cemetery among the tombs. 00:26:33.119 --> 00:26:40.779 But we need to understand this, that most people who have evil spirits are not troubled like that. 00:26:41.739 --> 00:26:45.679 They are able to function rather normally in life. 00:26:47.119 --> 00:26:48.659 Nonetheless, they are tellers many different times. 00:27:30.039 --> 00:27:31.960 She would go to psychic fairs. 00:27:31.980 --> 00:27:33.059 She would have her palms read. 00:27:33.160 --> 00:27:34.480 She would play with tarot cards. 00:27:34.980 --> 00:27:37.720 It all got started with a Ouija board when she was a child. 00:27:38.579 --> 00:27:41.299 And she was into all kinds of psychic stuff. 00:27:42.880 --> 00:27:44.660 And she came to Christ. 00:27:44.660 --> 00:27:50.660 And when she did, she began to feel at times that there was something inside of her. 00:27:52.019 --> 00:27:53.559 That there was
