look at what he prays and why it matters. 00:05:09.020 --> 00:05:11.520 How Jesus prays, what he prays, and why it matters. 00:05:11.680 --> 00:05:14.760 First of all, let's look at how Jesus prays. 00:05:14.759 --> 00:05:20.240 This passage in John 17 is part of what's called the upper room discourse. 00:05:20.920 --> 00:05:23.000 If you're following along in the Gospel of John, 00:05:23.060 --> 00:05:26.959 you'll notice that chapters 13 through 17 are all one scene. 00:05:27.759 --> 00:05:31.920 They're all part of Jesus in the upper room during the Passover meal, 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:34.579 the night before he's arrested and betrayed. 00:05:35.699 --> 00:05:38.659 And in the upper room, following the Passover meal, 00:05:38.660 --> 00:05:45.439 Jesus spends an extended time teaching his disciples in chapters 13 through 16. 00:05:45.900 --> 00:05:49.300 And this prayer in chapter 17 comes at the end of all that. 00:05:49.560 --> 00:05:53.660 And this is right before he heads to the Garden of Gethsemane, 00:05:54.540 --> 00:05:56.660 where he is ultimately betrayed and arrested. 00:05:57.760 --> 00:06:02.340 And this prayer of Jesus is often called his high priestly prayer. 00:06:02.980 --> 00:06:04.120 His high priestly prayer. 00:06:04.120 --> 00:06:05.920 And if we're going to understand what that means, 00:06:05.980 --> 00:06:08.540 we need to do a little bit of Old Testament homework. 00:06:09.399 --> 00:06:15.439 The work of priests in the Old Testament was complex and multifaceted work. 00:06:16.180 --> 00:06:20.800 And it was the exclusive job of the high priest to offer a sacrifice for sin 00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:23.439 on behalf of all the people on the Day of Atonement. 00:06:24.100 --> 00:06:27.519 And this is a job that involved multiple detailed steps. 00:06:27.519 --> 00:06:35.000 The first thing the high priest would do would be to prepare his own body by bathing and cleansing himself. 00:06:35.419 --> 00:06:38.279 And then he would put on the priestly garments. 00:06:39.180 --> 00:06:43.659 This is what is referred to in our Old Testament reading, Exodus 28, that was read earlier. 00:06:44.439 --> 00:06:52.279 The priest would put on an undergarment, a robe, a turban on his head, a sash tied around the waist. 00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:59.139 But what Exodus chapter 28 goes into detail the most on is the breastplate. 00:07:00.059 --> 00:07:00.819 The breastplate. 00:07:00.919 --> 00:07:04.279 On the priest's breastplate were 12 precious jewels. 00:07:05.219 --> 00:07:08.959 And on each jewel were engraved the names of the 12 tribes of Israel. 00:07:09.739 --> 00:07:13.000 And so this is what, look at what Exodus 28 verse 29 says. 00:07:13.000 --> 00:07:20.240 So Aaron the high priest shall bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment on his heart 00:07:20.240 --> 00:07:25.600 when he goes into the holy place to bring them to regular remembrance before the Lord. 00:07:26.639 --> 00:07:34.899 So Aaron would carry the names of Israel engraved on his heart before the presence of God 00:07:34.899 --> 00:07:38.139 as he went to make the sacrifice of atonement. 00:07:38.139 --> 00:07:42.919 After putting on his priestly garments, he would then make two sacrifices. 00:07:43.919 --> 00:07:47.259 Two animals, one for himself and one for all of the people. 00:07:48.300 --> 00:07:51.279 And these sacrifices would be made outside the sanctuary. 00:07:52.219 --> 00:07:55.099 Outside the inner presence of God, the most holy place. 00:07:56.159 --> 00:07:59.019 And then the priest would bring the blood of the sacrifices. 00:07:59.860 --> 00:08:03.079 He would bring them inside, into the inner sanctuary, 00:08:03.419 --> 00:08:07.360 and sprinkle the altar with the blood of the sacrifice. 00:08:08.139 --> 00:08:14.719 Now, all of this is actually really important, both to understand our passage in John chapter 17 00:08:14.719 --> 00:08:18.599 and to understand what Ascension Sunday is all about. 00:08:19.259 --> 00:08:21.479 For understanding the significance of the ascension. 00:08:22.719 --> 00:08:28.240 See, the work of a high priest wasn't finished once the sacrifice was made. 00:08:29.519 --> 00:08:33.059 And that's because the sacrifice occurred outside the inner sanctuary. 00:08:33.059 --> 00:08:38.259 In order for the sacrifice to be effective on behalf of the people, it had to be brought in. 00:08:39.179 --> 00:08:43.000 It had to be brought into the holy of holies, the inner sanctuary. 00:08:44.339 --> 00:08:48.939 And so this is why when we think about Jesus being our great high priest, 00:08:50.679 --> 00:08:54.939 the cross actually isn't complete on its own. 00:08:54.940 --> 00:08:59.160 The cross isn't complete without the ascension. 00:08:59.360 --> 00:09:03.260 In his death, Jesus makes a sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. 00:09:04.040 --> 00:09:07.400 Only unlike Aaron, he doesn't make a sacrifice for himself because he was sinless. 00:09:08.200 --> 00:09:11.560 But it's in the ascension that he presents the finished work of his sacrifice 00:09:11.560 --> 00:09:15.380 into the inner presence of God, in the heavenly throne room, 00:09:15.960 --> 00:09:18.060 so that it becomes effective on our behalf. 00:09:18.059 --> 00:09:22.559 This is what much of the book of Hebrews talks about. 00:09:22.699 --> 00:09:24.379 Listen to Hebrews chapter 9, verse 24. 00:09:25.299 --> 00:09:28.419 For Christ has entered not into holy places made with hands, 00:09:28.979 --> 00:09:31.000 which are copies of the true things, 00:09:31.399 --> 00:09:33.379 but into heaven itself, 00:09:34.039 --> 00:09:37.019 now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 00:09:38.019 --> 00:09:42.139 So in his death on the cross, Jesus pays the debt for our sin, 00:09:42.139 --> 00:09:45.879 but it's in the ascension, 00:09:46.500 --> 00:09:50.199 the ascension provides confirmation that that check has cleared. 00:09:52.000 --> 00:09:57.059 And this helps us understand part of what Jesus is doing in John chapter 17 00:09:57.059 --> 00:09:58.340 before he goes to the cross. 00:09:59.639 --> 00:10:00.939 In this prayer, 00:10:02.600 --> 00:10:04.860 Jesus is putting on his priestly garments. 00:10:06.080 --> 00:10:09.039 He's preparing for his atoning work. 00:10:09.039 --> 00:10:14.339 Just as Aaron bore the names of Israel on the jewels upon his heart, 00:10:15.120 --> 00:10:19.019 so Jesus Christ is putting on a much greater brush plate. 00:10:19.879 --> 00:10:24.379 He's bearing the names of all those for whom he would suffer and die. 00:10:26.179 --> 00:10:33.839 He's going to the cross with your name and my name engraved upon his heart, 00:10:33.840 --> 00:10:39.860 so much so that it calls him to pray for us, 00:10:39.899 --> 00:10:41.519 to intercede for us before the Father. 00:10:41.720 --> 00:10:42.840 He's saying to his Father, 00:10:43.300 --> 00:10:44.700 this is who I love the most. 00:10:45.759 --> 00:10:47.040 They are precious to me. 00:10:47.820 --> 00:10:49.480 They are jewels upon my heart, 00:10:49.860 --> 00:10:51.519 and I am praying for them. 00:10:52.720 --> 00:10:56.500 And so this is why Jesus' prayer here in John 17 00:10:56.500 --> 00:10:58.860 is called his high priestly prayer. 00:10:58.860 --> 00:10:59.759 And as we'll see, 00:11:00.320 --> 00:11:04.320 it's both a prayer that he prays for himself and for us. 00:11:04.840 --> 00:11:07.379 It's a prayer that he prays both for himself and for us. 00:11:07.419 --> 00:11:08.960 And that's the next thing that we're going to look at 00:11:08.960 --> 00:11:11.180 is what Jesus prays in this prayer. 00:11:12.080 --> 00:11:16.060 There are kind of three main things that Jesus prays for in He prays for our glory, 00:11:25.039 --> 00:11:25.639 his glory, 00:11:26.240 --> 00:11:26.759 our holiness, 00:11:26.920 --> 00:11:27.580 and the church's unity. 00:11:27.580 --> 00:11:28.960 So first of all, 00:11:29.020 --> 00:11:30.580 Jesus prays for his glory. 00:11:30.840 --> 00:11:32.660 And we see this in verses one and two. 00:11:34.139 --> 00:11:34.740 Jesus prays, 00:11:34.860 --> 00:11:36.240 Father, the hour has come. 00:11:37.440 --> 00:11:38.759 Glorify your Son, 00:11:39.420 --> 00:11:41.320 that the Son may glorify you, 00:11:41.879 --> 00:11:44.340 since you have given 00:12:08.960 But for Jesus to pray for his own glory 00:12:08.960 --> 00:12:10.220 is actually a good thing. 00:12:10.259 --> 00:12:11.159 And I want to show you why. 00:12:11.840 --> 00:12:12.840 Because in this prayer, 00:12:12.840 --> 00:12:16.560 we see the mutually glorifying relationship 00:12:16.560 --> 00:12:17.280 of the Trinity. 00:12:18.800 --> 00:12:20.360 We see that the Son 00:12:20.360 --> 00:12:23.420 glorifies the Father 00:12:23.420 --> 00:12:26.660 by accomplishing the work 00:12:26.660 --> 00:12:28.600 that the Father gave him to do 00:12:28.600 --> 00:12:29.240 in his life, 00:12:29.320 --> 00:12:29.879 his ministry, 00:12:30.040 --> 00:12:30.620 his death. 00:12:31.940 --> 00:12:34.500 And the Father glorifies the Son 00:12:34.500 --> 00:12:37.139 by rising him from the dead 00:12:37.139 --> 00:12:38.179 and giving him authority 00:12:38.179 --> 00:12:38.899 over all things 00:12:38.899 --> 00:12:39.960 in his ascension. 00:12:41.460 --> 00:12:42.759 And even though the Holy Spirit 00:12:42.759 --> 00:12:44.480 isn't mentioned here, 00:12:44.519 --> 00:12:45.000 it's implied. 00:12:45.059 --> 00:12:46.019 Because how did the Father 00:12:46.019 --> 00:12:47.559 and the Son glorify one another? 00:12:49.080 --> 00:12:50.659 Through the power of the Holy Spirit. 00:12:51.580 --> 00:12:53.199 And so here in Jesus' prayer 00:12:53.199 --> 00:12:53.759 to his Father, 00:12:53.819 --> 00:12:55.460 we get this window, 00:12:55.720 --> 00:12:57.840 we get this backstage access 00:12:57.840 --> 00:13:01.279 into God's own Trinitarian life. 00:13:02.240 --> 00:13:04.120 The Trinity is this divine dance 00:13:04.120 --> 00:13:06.439 of mutually glorifying love. 00:13:07.139 --> 00:13:09.879 And the incredible thing 00:13:09.879 --> 00:13:13.039 is that we are invited to join in. 00:13:14.159 --> 00:13:16.059 We see this later in verse 24 00:13:16.059 --> 00:13:17.299 where Jesus prays this, 00:13:17.779 --> 00:13:19.779 Father, I desire that they also, 00:13:20.539 --> 00:13:21.679 whom you have given me, 00:13:22.439 --> 00:13:24.039 may be with me where I am, 00:13:24.860 --> 00:13:26.980 to see my glory that you have
