00:03:21.520 Despite Peter's failure, Jesus, though, shows remarkable grace. 00:03:21.980 --> 00:03:26.800 To where in John 21, after his resurrection, Jesus gives Peter a chance for restoration. 00:03:42.020 --> 00:03:47.080 Three times Jesus emphasizes the reality and the call that he should feed his own sheep, 00:03:47.600 --> 00:03:52.520 highlighting Jesus' love for his church, which will 00:04:26.639 when he says that he loves his church, which in turn would mean we love the church, where 00:04:26.639 --> 00:04:29.079 we're swept up in the glory of the church. 00:04:30.279 --> 00:04:36.159 Mark Dever, one of my heroes, says that the church is the gospel made visible. 00:04:37.139 --> 00:04:42.459 And we see this through the specific sacraments that God gives his people, but the church, 00:04:42.519 --> 00:04:45.000 as it gathers, is the gospel made visible. 00:04:45.000 --> 00:04:50.879 And so I want us to explore Matthew 16, 13 through 20, which reveals that God's, reveals 00:04:50.879 --> 00:04:51.660 the church's glory. 00:04:51.759 --> 00:04:56.680 And then in Matthew 18, verses 15 through 17, which shows how personal the church actually 00:04:56.680 --> 00:04:57.019 is. 00:04:57.720 --> 00:05:02.259 Now, Jesus speaks of the church only three times in the gospel, gospels. 00:05:02.779 --> 00:05:08.000 Three times in the gospels, he uses the word church or ecclesia or assembly. 00:05:08.879 --> 00:05:12.600 Now, I think this emphasizes its profound importance and significance. 00:05:12.600 --> 00:05:19.420 So as we see a couple of these verses, keep the local church in mind as the thing that 00:05:19.420 --> 00:05:25.060 God loves and keep the universal church in mind as the thing that God loves. 00:05:25.840 --> 00:05:27.820 It's a central theme throughout the New Testament. 00:05:27.980 --> 00:05:32.640 So the first thing I want you to see here this morning is the glory of the church. 00:05:33.480 --> 00:05:35.700 Church, capital C, the glory of the church. 00:05:35.699 --> 00:05:40.819 The church of Jesus is glorious and worthy of our love and our commitment. 00:05:41.939 --> 00:05:45.379 Matthew 16, verses 13 through 20. 00:05:45.979 --> 00:05:51.599 Context here, Jesus brings his disciples to Caesarea Philippi, which is a city in northern 00:05:51.599 --> 00:05:53.699 Israel near Mount Hermon. 00:05:54.360 --> 00:06:00.159 Now, this region fed by the mountains' streams, so streams that would come out of the mountain, 00:06:00.160 --> 00:06:04.280 marks the headwaters of the Jordan River, but also it's a hub. 00:06:04.880 --> 00:06:07.560 And it's interesting that Jesus would bring his disciples up there. 00:06:07.840 --> 00:06:13.440 This area marked itself as a hub of pagan worship and Roman influence. 00:06:14.040 --> 00:06:20.200 It was the sin city of its own time, you could imagine, filled with temples and idol worship 00:06:20.200 --> 00:06:25.379 where sacrificial and immoral practices were abounding greatly. 00:06:25.379 --> 00:06:30.259 And it's here in this setting that Jesus takes them up there, looks at them, and asks his 00:06:30.259 --> 00:06:34.699 disciples, what do people say the Son of Man is? 00:06:36.480 --> 00:06:40.680 And these guys respond with names like John the Baptist, you see there in the text. 00:06:41.159 --> 00:06:42.980 Names like Elijah and Jeremiah. 00:06:43.180 --> 00:06:44.959 And all these were revealed figures. 00:06:45.180 --> 00:06:49.180 Jesus then turns to them, asks them a question, they answer the question, he turns it back on 00:06:49.180 --> 00:06:52.759 them, and he says, but okay, who do you say that I am? 00:06:53.980 --> 00:06:55.040 You see that there in that text. 00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:56.500 Who do you say that I am? 00:06:58.040 --> 00:07:02.680 I'd imagine some of you have fallen in love with your spouse. 00:07:03.600 --> 00:07:07.660 And it would take a lot of guts out of you to say, so what do your 00:07:36.299 Here we see Jesus going to them with this really important question. 00:07:36.300 --> 00:07:43.180 And it's Peter, who Peter messes up a lot, but you can't knock him for being bold and courageous. 00:07:43.819 --> 00:07:47.360 He says, you are the Christ, the son of the living God. 00:07:47.360 --> 00:07:50.980 And Jesus commends him there, you see in the text. 00:07:51.639 --> 00:07:56.900 And he actually affirms that this news that Peter preached from his lips back to Christ 00:07:56.900 --> 00:08:00.920 was something that was so amazing that it was heavenly inspired. 00:08:01.819 --> 00:08:06.500 Because you remember, it wasn't far removed from this that Peter would deny Jesus. 00:08:06.660 --> 00:08:07.980 But at this point, he was inspired. 00:08:08.879 --> 00:08:12.379 Then addressing Peter specifically, Jesus says, you are Peter. 00:08:13.220 --> 00:08:13.900 Who am I? 00:08:13.899 --> 00:08:16.199 You are the Christ, the son of the living God. 00:09:09.819 --> 00:09:17.120 And the reason that they aim to do this is not because we want to really be smart or really sound Puritan 00:09:17.120 --> 00:09:22.299 or really make things in calligraphy that make us look pretty impressive. 00:09:22.539 --> 00:09:24.759 We have this confession, this mighty confession of faith. 00:09:24.759 --> 00:09:29.860 But in the reality that what a confession of faith does is it takes something so massive and so large, 00:09:30.019 --> 00:09:33.319 the Bible, and it says, this is who Jesus is. 00:09:34.120 --> 00:09:35.659 This is what hope we 00:10:13.620 Do you really think someone was crucified on a cross for the forgiveness of your sins? 00:10:13.620 --> 00:10:18.379 And hopefully you can be as strong and courageous as Peter when he blurts out 00:10:18.379 --> 00:10:21.460 that when someone says something like that, you say, absolutely. 00:10:22.200 --> 00:10:23.919 You think the whole world was made from nothing? 00:10:24.799
