often do our regrets leave a lasting scar on our life, 00:06:42.500 --> 00:06:44.920 sometimes that we bear for the rest of our days? 00:06:45.339 --> 00:06:50.819 Many of you will know the pain of what it is to carry around something like that for years. 00:06:52.220 --> 00:06:55.720 And so here's the question that this passage would ask us, 00:06:57.159 --> 00:06:59.620 is where do you run with your regrets? 00:07:01.160 --> 00:07:01.399 Right? 00:07:01.459 --> 00:07:02.060 Where do you go? 00:07:03.980 --> 00:07:06.540 You see, central to our passage today is this man named Peter. 00:07:08.139 --> 00:07:10.600 And I'm sure if you'd have asked him, in his life, 00:07:10.680 --> 00:07:12.959 what his biggest life regret is, 00:07:13.300 --> 00:07:20.379 he would have undoubtedly led you to the time when he denied Jesus three times. 00:07:20.379 --> 00:07:23.120 And if you've got your Bibles there, here's the thing that you'll see. 00:07:23.199 --> 00:07:28.680 If you flick back a few pages to chapter 13 and verse 34. 00:07:29.899 --> 00:07:34.120 So Jesus is with his disciples and he's told them what's going to happen. 00:07:34.199 --> 00:07:38.139 He said that he's going to Jerusalem to lay down his life on the cross. 00:07:38.459 --> 00:07:43.699 And he said that where he is going, the disciples cannot come. 00:07:43.699 --> 00:07:48.959 And so Peter hears this and he's clearly taking his brave pills that morning. 00:07:49.159 --> 00:07:51.339 He points to the other disciples and he says, 00:07:51.420 --> 00:07:55.139 see them, even if they fall away, even if they disown you, 00:07:55.180 --> 00:07:55.539 do you know what? 00:07:55.539 --> 00:07:57.579 I'm going to be right here, right next to you. 00:07:57.620 --> 00:07:59.360 We're going right there and I'm going to be your wingman. 00:07:59.439 --> 00:08:00.339 This is what he says. 00:08:00.339 --> 00:08:05.199 And just like Jesus knew, when that time came, 00:08:06.199 --> 00:08:07.579 three times Peter crumbled. 00:08:10.659 --> 00:08:12.659 Context of John 21, just before it, 00:08:13.519 --> 00:08:16.179 Jesus has died, Jesus has risen. 00:08:17.079 --> 00:08:20.339 And as we saw last week, Jesus has appeared to his disciples. 00:08:21.299 --> 00:08:23.859 And this is where we tap into chapter 21. 00:08:24.039 --> 00:08:25.500 Now we're going to spend most of our time, 00:08:25.559 --> 00:08:28.759 if you've got the text there, in verses 15 to 19. 00:08:28.759 --> 00:08:33.200 But I want us to see the encounter that Jesus has with his disciples 00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:34.980 in the first half of John 21. 00:08:35.460 --> 00:08:42.960 Because they just paint for us a magnificent portrait of who Jesus is. 00:08:43.220 --> 00:08:43.580 Right? 00:08:43.659 --> 00:08:44.279 night, they've caught nothing. 00:09:14.160 --> 00:09:19.040 Jesus provides for them fish to eat and to catch. 00:09:19.720 --> 00:09:20.960 The disciples are hungry. 00:09:21.060 --> 00:09:21.880 They've been out all night. 00:09:21.940 --> 00:09:22.600 They've caught nothing. 00:09:22.740 --> 00:09:25.120 Jesus provides breakfast for them. 00:09:25.120 --> 00:09:27.019 The disciples are 00:09:55.199 Do you see all the way through this little section, the initiative is all from Jesus. 00:09:56.679 --> 00:09:58.099 He's going towards them. 00:09:58.219 --> 00:09:59.219 He's making the moves. 00:09:59.319 --> 00:10:00.419 He's providing all the things. 00:10:00.699 --> 00:10:01.639 Here's the point. 00:10:01.639 --> 00:10:12.659 That before these men spend themselves in the service of Jesus, they must themselves be served by Jesus. 00:10:13.600 --> 00:10:24.120 You see, way before this Christian discipleship thing is about their commitment to him, it's first and foremost about his commitment to them. 00:10:24.120 --> 00:10:27.580 And so he says, come and have breakfast. 00:10:27.840 --> 00:10:33.620 I mean, how wonderful a lesson that is for everyday disciples then, was George Muller, the Christian evangelist who set up many orphanages down in Bristol. 00:10:53.840 --> 00:10:54.659 I remember he used to live there. 00:10:54.720 --> 00:10:55.960 He used to talk about this man. 00:10:56.159 --> 00:11:02.179 And he used to say, with so many pressing things, pressing in on his to-do list, so many things going around in his head. 00:11:02.240 --> 00:11:05.720 Somebody once asked him, what is the most important thing that you start your day with? 00:11:05.720 --> 00:11:15.920 And he said that the great and primary business to which he ought to attend every day was to have his soul happy in the Lord. 00:11:18.139 --> 00:11:19.840 Jesus says, come and have breakfast. 00:11:21.660 --> 00:11:28.540 In verse 15, the camera turns to focus in on this conversation between Peter and Jesus. 00:11:28.539 --> 00:11:41.219 And so with Peter's threefold denial of Jesus hanging here in the background, the Lamb of God, he goes straight for the elephant in the room. 00:11:42.839 --> 00:11:49.159 So I want you to savour two wonderful things about Jesus as we see him here. 00:11:49.959 --> 00:11:51.799 Okay, as we see him interacting with Peter. 00:11:51.899 --> 00:11:52.860 Here's the first one. 00:11:52.860 --> 00:11:58.300 And I want us to see and I want you to know how Jesus treats us when we fail him. 00:11:59.720 --> 00:12:02.080 Now let's pause here just for a minute. 00:12:02.259 --> 00:12:05.259 Okay, and here's what I was thinking this week. 00:12:05.340 --> 00:12:07.820 What would I have done in this situation if I were Jesus? 00:12:09.100 --> 00:12:09.379 Right? 00:12:09.560 --> 00:12:15.800 Given everything that Peter's done in this point, how would I have approached this conversation around this charcoal fire having breakfast? 00:12:15.940 --> 00:12:18.440 Here's what I would have been tempted to do. 00:12:18.440 --> 00:12:23.280 I would have been tempted to answer every question that somebody asked me with the words cock-a-doodle-doo. 00:12:23.400 --> 00:12:24.580 That's what I would have done, right? 00:12:25.080 --> 00:12:30.800 I would have scratched my ear with three fingers and I would have stared intently in Peter's direction. 00:12:32.440 --> 00:12:33.900 But that's not what Jesus does. 00:12:35.720 --> 00:12:37.780 Jesus has one simple question for Peter. 00:12:38.040 --> 00:12:38.580 Do you see it? 00:12:39.240 --> 00:12:44.300 Verse 15, he simply asks, do you love me? 00:12:44.299 --> 00:12:49.339 Again, verse 16, do you love me? 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.559 And finally, verse 17, he says, do you love me? 00:12:55.979 --> 00:13:04.659 And I think what's going on here is Jesus is leading Peter back to that place of simple, childlike faith. 00:13:05.959 --> 00:13:07.659 I mean, that's all he's got, isn't it, Peter? 00:13:07.839 --> 00:13:08.620 That's all he's got. 00:13:08.679 --> 00:13:12.399 He can't point back to his past performance and say, see. 00:13:12.399 --> 00:13:13.500 Do you see it? 00:13:13.559 --> 00:13:14.799 Do you see what I did for you? 00:13:15.059 --> 00:13:16.659 Do you see how I performed for you? 00:13:16.740 --> 00:13:17.720 Do you see how I stood? 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:19.459 No, he can't say that. 00:13:19.620 --> 00:13:24.740 He simply says, Lord, in my weakness and in my failing, you alone know my heart. 00:13:26.840 --> 00:13:42.159 And Jesus deals with Peter's three-time failure around a charcoal fire by bringing out from deep within him this three-fold confession of his simple love for him around another charcoal fire. 00:13:42.159 --> 00:13:43.399 On the beach. 00:13:44.399 --> 00:13:46.899 And just take a moment and take that in. 00:13:49.339 --> 00:13:52.100 Are you not so glad that Jesus is like this? 00:13:53.919 --> 00:14:02.399 That the posture that's most natural to him is not a finger whack, but rather it's wide open arms. 00:14:02.399 --> 00:14:09.259 That he doesn't back off when his people fall and say, you need to get your act together before I come close. 00:14:09.579 --> 00:14:13.600 It's almost like our failings instinctively draw him to us. 00:14:14.860 --> 00:14:15.939 He presses near. 00:14:16.799 --> 00:14:18.819 Those verses that we read right at the start. 00:14:19.019 --> 00:14:22.840 Truly a faint wick he will not snuff out. 00:14:23.220 --> 00:14:27.319 Truly a bruised reed he will not break. 00:14:27.320 --> 00:14:33.260 And the truth is, friends, that we have given Jesus countless reasons to discard us. 00:14:34.320 --> 00:14:36.500 To go and look for a better team member. 00:14:36.620 --> 00:14:39.780 To go and look for somebody who would perform better. 00:14:39.920 --> 00:14:42.980 And yet none of those reasons have changed his mind about us. 00:14:43.660 --> 00:14:45.020 He has loved us. 00:14:47.560 --> 00:14:49.600 And there's one author I read recently put it. 00:14:50.180 --> 00:14:50.920 This is great. 00:14:50.919 --> 00:14:53.399 Who would have come up with a Jesus? 00:14:56.719 --> 00:14:57.479 Now here's the thing. 00:14:57.559 --> 00:15:01.819 Before we think this is simply Jesus saying, Peter let's let bygones be bygones. 00:15:01.939 --> 00:15:05.259 And he's sweeping Peter's sin under the carpet. 00:15:05.439 --> 00:15:06.719 He gives him a slap on the wrist. 00:15:06.839 --> 00:15:07.679 And he says, denial. 00:15:07.879 --> 00:15:08.759 What denial? 00:15:09.240 --> 00:15:10.959 Remember the context of this. 00:15:12.079 --> 00:15:16.419 Jesus has died on the cross for the sins of his people. 00:15:16.419 --> 00:15:19.000 The sin, particularly Peter's situation here. 00:15:19.059 --> 00:15:22.299 The sin that he knew Peter was going to do. 00:15:22.459 --> 00:15:24.959 The sin that deserved God's righteous judgment. 00:15:25.539 --> 00:15:28.979 And for that judgment eternally to rely squarely on his people. 00:15:29.339 --> 00:15:32.919 Jesus drinks the cup of God's wrath dry. 00:15:33.079 --> 00:15:38.259 So that you and I do not need to swallow a drop of it if our faith is in him. 00:15:40.199 --> 00:15:41.740 And Jesus has really risen. 00:15:41.740 --> 00:15:50.139 Meaning that the price of our failures, of our sin, that price has been paid and has been paid in full. 00:15:50.220 --> 00:15:56.680 And that means that that guilty verdict which stood against us out 00:16:34.439 Right? 00:16:34.459 --> 00:16:36.419 I've never walked across the bridge before. 00:16:36.419 --> 00:16:38.860 I've lived here pretty much my entire life. 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:42.419 And I remember going across that bridge when it was open. 00:16:42.500 --> 00:16:45.379 But today, that bridge only takes larger vehicles. 00:16:45.639 --> 00:16:45.719 Right? 00:16:45.740 --> 00:16:46.439 You might know that. 00:16:47.319 --> 00:16:51.539 So actually when we're walking across this bridge, it was a very peaceful experience. 00:16:51.659 --> 00:16:53.179 We're like, well this is really, really nice. 00:16:54.839 --> 00:16:59.179 Every so often what would happen though is that we'd feel the bridge beginning to shake. 00:16:59.899 --> 00:17:00.139 Right? 00:17:00.139 --> 00:17:04.099 And it seemed that the shaking increased all the time. 00:17:04.220 --> 00:17:07.079 To the point where we looked at one another and thought, what is going on here? 00:17:07.440 --> 00:17:09.619 And then we turned around simply to see. 00:17:09.700 --> 00:17:11.220 Do you know what it was that was causing the shake? 00:17:11.480 --> 00:17:12.180 One bus. 00:17:13.460 -->
