that promise, that word from his father? 00:04:50.079 --> 00:04:59.039 The background of these verses is a larger section of Deuteronomy, but specifically we can hone in on Deuteronomy 8. 00:04:59.639 --> 00:05:04.279 Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 8 in his first reply to Satan. 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:07.439 But it says this in verses 1 to 5. 00:05:07.899 --> 00:05:08.219 He says, 00:05:08.220 --> 00:05:37.640 And so the context here is that God has taken, he has led Israel out into the wilderness for 40 years 00:05:37.639 --> 00:05:42.740 to test them to see whether or not in their heart that they would be obedient to God. 00:05:43.419 --> 00:05:46.879 And of course, what we know is that they failed comprehensively. 00:05:47.319 --> 00:05:50.139 They tempted God at Meribah and Massah. 00:05:50.399 --> 00:05:53.079 They were idolatrous in the golden calf. 00:05:53.560 --> 00:05:57.279 They grabbed at the manna when God said to them, don't store up any more than a day. 00:05:57.379 --> 00:06:01.240 They grabbed at it and stored it up and they ignored the word of God. 00:06:01.240 --> 00:06:11.280 And so the picture of us here is God leads Jesus out into the wilderness for bread. 00:08:00.740 --> 00:08:04.199 You see, that was a blow that was aimed at knocking Jesus out. 00:08:04.199 --> 00:08:06.060 You see, it says there, 00:08:06.300 --> 00:08:12.139 After 40 days and 40 nights without food, 00:08:12.560 --> 00:08:13.819 Jesus is hungry. 00:08:14.860 --> 00:08:16.539 And you kind of get that, don't you? 00:08:17.339 --> 00:08:18.620 I mean, you understand that through a hunger stage in the early stages. 00:08:29.420 --> 00:08:35.700 And then you go through a point in your fasting where you don't feel anything. 00:08:36.700 --> 00:08:41.019 And then right at 00:13:44.900 --> 00:13:45.780 It is written. 00:13:46.600 --> 00:13:47.600 And He quotes Scripture, 00:13:47.720 --> 00:13:49.820 man does not live on bread alone, 00:13:49.880 --> 00:13:52.360 but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. 00:13:52.360 --> 00:13:55.340 He answers this temptation to doubt God's Word 00:13:55.340 --> 00:13:57.460 with the Word of God. 00:13:58.539 -->
