person there to speak on that. 00:03:53.580 --> 00:03:55.960 And he's probably right. 00:03:56.520 --> 00:04:03.900 But I'm hoping that the wisdom of God's word, which is greater than any of our wisdom, will come through much louder than my lack of it. 00:04:04.320 --> 00:04:07.220 And so, let's jump in and look at wisdom today. 00:04:07.939 --> 00:04:10.460 In the past few weeks, we've been The way that we do it is through Christ. 00:05:36.519 --> 00:05:43.339 And so, Teresa just did a great job reading from Proverbs 8 about wisdom. 00:05:44.219 --> 00:05:47.539 It's the big theme of the book of Proverbs. 00:05:48.519 --> 00:05:50.419 And it's a huge subject. 00:05:50.599 --> 00:05:52.379 We're not going to cover all of it today, obviously. 00:05:53.219 --> 00:06:01.240 But we're sort of going to build to the big part, which is the title, that wisdom changes everything. 00:06:01.240 --> 00:06:08.819 So, we're going to take some time and build a foundation so that we can actually get to that point where I can say wisdom changes everything. 00:06:09.000 --> 00:06:10.439 And you'll understand what that means. 00:06:11.079 --> 00:06:20.879 And the first starting point that I want to start with is that wisdom is rooted in a proper relationship with God, which is ultimately found through the gospel. 00:06:20.879 --> 00:06:29.019 If you look at the book of Proverbs and the Bible in general, it says that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. 00:06:29.019 --> 00:06:35.539 I think in our day, we've lost a lot of the significance of what the fear of the Lord means. 00:06:36.139 --> 00:06:37.879 We don't like fear in our culture. 00:06:38.599 --> 00:06:39.799 We like manageable fear. 00:06:39.919 --> 00:06:45.399 So, we like horror movies that you can go and have some fictional account of something horrific happening. 00:06:45.639 --> 00:06:49.639 And you can get up two hours later and be like, God, that's not real life. 00:06:49.639 --> 00:06:52.139 But we don't like real fear. 00:06:52.479 --> 00:06:53.639 We like to avoid it. 00:06:54.459 --> 00:06:57.560 And we definitely don't want a God who is fearful. 00:06:57.939 --> 00:07:01.099 We want a God who is a genie in a magic bottle. 00:07:02.279 --> 00:07:08.599 You know, you find your glass or golden lamp and you rub it and Robin Williams' voice comes out and says, I'll give you three wishes. 00:07:09.279 --> 00:07:10.879 And that's what we want our God to be. 00:07:10.939 --> 00:07:13.740 We don't want God to be someone that inspires fear for us. 00:07:13.740 --> 00:07:19.100 And so, we take this term, the fear of the Lord, and we sort of dumb it down and we say it's awe and it's reverence. 00:07:19.540 --> 00:07:24.300 But if you look throughout the Bible, when people had encounters with God, they were terrified. 00:07:25.860 --> 00:07:28.079 One example would be the Israelites. 00:07:28.759 --> 00:07:29.699 They were slaves in Egypt. 00:07:29.819 --> 00:07:32.360 They got set free through God's powerful work. 00:07:32.840 --> 00:07:39.819 He leads them through the wilderness to Mount Sinai, where he is going to speak to them and reveal to them his commands for them. 00:07:39.819 --> 00:07:46.800 And they come to the mountain and God starts to speak to them in a loud voice through the thunder. 00:07:47.139 --> 00:07:51.139 And the people are there and they hear the voice of God speaking and they are terrified. 00:07:52.100 --> 00:08:00.199 And they go to Moses, their leader, and they say, hey, Moses, we don't want God talking to us because we're afraid that he'll kill us if he does. 00:08:00.620 --> 00:08:06.039 So, how about you go talk to God for us and then bring back his messages and just tell us everything that he said. 00:08:06.740 --> 00:08:07.680 They were terrified. 00:08:07.680 --> 00:08:09.399 They had a fear of the Lord. 00:08:10.259 --> 00:08:13.180 Another example in the Bible would be in the book of Isaiah chapter 6. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:17.680 The prophet Isaiah was the voice of God to his people. 00:08:19.019 --> 00:08:20.540 And in Isaiah chapter 6, he says, 00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:24.920 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on his throne. 00:08:25.079 --> 00:08:28.019 He has this vision where he sees God. 00:08:29.680 --> 00:08:30.779 And he is terrified. 00:08:31.860 --> 00:08:36.919 God's prophet to the nation actually calls down a curse upon himself when he sees God. 00:08:37.139 --> 00:08:39.399 He says, woe is me, I am ruined. 00:08:39.820 --> 00:08:40.460 Just kill me now. 00:08:40.520 --> 00:08:40.940 It's over. 00:08:42.940 --> 00:08:48.400 Because I am a man of unclean lips and I live among a people of unclean lips and my eyes have seen the king. 00:08:49.920 --> 00:08:54.879 The man whose lips deliver God's words to the people when he actually sees God says, 00:08:54.879 --> 00:08:57.340 My lips are dirty. 00:08:57.340 --> 00:08:57.919 They're filthy. 00:08:58.240 --> Again, Jesus on boats. 00:10:34.840 --> 00:10:37.280 And there's a storm that comes. 00:10:37.279 --> 00:10:38.699 And Jesus is asleep. 00:10:38.839 --> 00:10:40.019 And the disciples are not. 00:10:40.679 --> 00:10:43.480 And the disciples are terrified of the storm. 00:10:44.860 --> 00:10:48.039 And they come to Jesus and they wake him and they say, save us. 00:10:48.199 --> 00:10:49.799 Don't you care that we're all going to die? 00:10:49.799 --> 00:10:53.500 And he wakes up. 00:10:54.059 --> 00:10:58.159 He turns and he looks at the storm and the wind and the waves and the rain and the thunder. 00:10:58.359 --> 00:11:00.159 And he says, peace, be still. 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:01.859 And it does. 00:11:03.319 --> 00:11:07.019 And the Bible says, not that the disciples stopped being afraid when that happened, 00:11:07.199 --> 00:11:09.500 but actually that they became more afraid. 00:11:10.039 --> 00:11:13.359 Because now instead of, oh, there's weather that can kill us, 00:11:13.740 --> 00:11:16.719 there is a man on the boat with us who can control the weather. 00:11:16.720 --> 00:11:19.460 And that terrified them. 00:11:20.180 --> 00:11:25.279 And they became more afraid of this man on the boat with them than they were of the weather itself. 00:11:26.320 --> 00:11:32.960 In the Bible, anytime someone has an interaction with God where they get to see him and his power on display, 00:11:33.279 --> 00:11:35.820 there is a genuine, legitimate fear. 00:11:35.820 --> 00:11:41.440 And I think that understanding this is essential to our understanding of wisdom. 00:11:42.480 --> 00:11:43.960 And this is not a crippling fear. 00:11:44.020 --> 00:11:47.400 This is not a fear that just traps us and holds us and won't let us go. 00:11:47.740 --> 00:11:50.560 But it's actually, the Bible says, a fear that leads to life. 00:11:51.820 --> 00:11:54.700 I know that may seem like a paradox for us. 00:11:55.260 --> 00:12:00.000 But if you think about it, the disciples on the boat with Jesus, when he calmed the storm, 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:03.860 they were afraid of this man on the boat with them. 00:12:04.320 --> 00:12:07.899 But when they realized that they were afraid of him, 00:12:08.320 --> 00:12:10.799 they realized that there was nothing else they needed to be afraid of. 00:12:11.840 --> 00:12:15.639 The things that they had previously been afraid of, the wind, the rain, the seas, 00:12:16.279 --> 00:12:18.480 this guy controls those. 00:12:18.519 --> 00:12:19.700 Why would we need to fear those? 00:12:19.700 --> 00:12:26.340 And the fear of Jesus, the fear of the Lord in that situation, 00:12:26.480 --> 00:12:29.300 freed them from all the other fears that they were experiencing. 00:12:29.480 --> 00:12:32.220 So when we properly understand the fear of the Lord, 00:12:32.280 --> 00:12:37.000 it actually liberates us and frees us from all of our other fears. 00:12:37.980 --> 00:12:42.640 But also, it's not a fear that just us properly understanding what wisdom is. 00:14:13.259 --> 00:14:19.159 As we move on, we see also that God's wisdom, the true wisdom, 00:14:19.840 --> 00:14:25.259 is different than the world's wisdom, although they are not mutually exclusive. 00:14:28.259 --> 00:14:32.000 The definition of wisdom that I'm working with today is that wisdom is 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:36.100 a system of beliefs this is something that we sort of miss out on in our day and age, 00:14:44.879 --> 00:14:49.300 that ultimately in the Bible, wisdom, such as the book of Proverbs, 00:14:49.840 --> 00:14:55.620 was not written as, this is how you have to be, or else. 00:14:56.080 --> 00:15:00.440 But it was written as an instruction to help live the good life. 00:15:01.940 --> 00:15:04.580 Solomon says, don't go mess around with your neighbor's wife, 00:15:04.580 --> 00:15:07.020 because you don't want your neighbor out for your head. 00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:13.520 Solomon says, you don't want to rob people because you want to live in a world 00:15:13.520 --> 00:15:16.180 that is safe, where you don't have to worry about people robbing you. 00:15:16.460 --> 00:15:19.960 Like, the key to the good life is 00:15:29.360 And in the Bible, the fear of the Lord, living in obedience to his commands, 00:15:29.360 --> 00:15:34.040 trusting Christ, is repeatedly portrayed as the path to the good life. 00:15:34.580 --> 00:15:38.300 And the world also has a definition of the good life. 00:15:38.960 --> 00:15:42.220 The world says the good life is get as much money as you can. 00:15:43.020 --> 00:15:44.680 Get as much power as you can. 00:15:45.100 --> 00:15:46.520 Have as much sex as you can. 00:15:47.460 --> 00:15:51.160 Pursue happiness at all costs as much as you can. 00:15:51.159 --> 00:15:58.079 And because of this, the world has a definition of wisdom that is different than God's 00:15:58.079 --> 00:16:03.259 because the definition of the good life that they're basing their definition of wisdom upon 00:16:03.259 --> 00:16:06.139 is different than God's definition of the good life. 00:16:06.139 --> 00:16:12.039 So the world's collection of wisdom could look something like this. 00:16:12.899 --> 00:16:14.919 Work as hard as you can from an early age. 00:16:15.240 --> 00:16:18.759 Get into the best school that you can so that you can get the best job that you can 00:23:37.819 Proverbs is not a book 00:23:37.819 --> 00:23:39.519 about a bunch of different things, 00:23:39.519 --> 00:23:40.619 but it's a book about one thing. 00:23:41.079 --> 00:23:42.240 It's a book about wisdom. 00:23:42.240 --> 00:23:44.880 And everything else that the book of Proverbs talks about 00:23:44.880 --> 00:23:46.880 falls under the umbrella of wisdom. 00:23:47.759 --> 00:23:50.620 So when Proverbs talks about our family, 00:23:51.019 --> 00:23:53.240 it's not talking about the family in and of itself, 00:23:53.339 --> 00:23:55.960 but it's talking about how should our understanding of wisdom 00:23:55.960 --> 00:23:57.859 shape the way that we approach our family. 00:23:57.859 --> 00:24:01.159 When Proverbs talks about work, 00:24:01.319 --> 00:24:03.419 it's not talking about work in and of itself, 00:24:03.599 --> 00:24:06.699 but it's saying how should our approach to work 00:24:06.699 --> 00:24:10.219 be impacted by the fact that we have wisdom. 00:24:11.259 --> 00:24:13.819 And so wisdom is not just one thing among many 00:24:13.819 --> 00:24:15.699 in the book of Proverbs that are discussed, 00:24:15.699 --> 00:24:19.500 but it is the thing that the book of Proverbs talks about. 00:24:19.500 --> 00:24:23.140 And as we move forward into the New Testament, 00:24:23.640 --> 00:24:25.519 we see that the New Testament draws 00:24:25.519 --> 00:24:27.440 these unmistakable parallels 00:24:27.440 --> 00:24:29.819 between wisdom in the Old Testament 00:24:29.819 --> 00:24:32.500 and the person of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. 00:24:34.319 --> 00:24:37.079 So we read in Proverbs chapter 8 00:24:37.079 --> 00:24:41.900 that wisdom was the first among God's creation. 00:24:42.539 --> 00:24:45.160 It was with God in creation. 00:24:45.740 --> 00:24:48.720 And as we look at Colossians chapter 1, 00:24:48.720 --> 00:24:50.319 verses 15 through 17, 00:24:50.660 --> 00:24:52.480 we see that Paul actually draws 00:24:52.480 --> 00:24:54.319 an amazing number of parallels 00:24:54.319 --> 00:24:58.160 between wisdom and the person of Jesus Christ. 00:24:58.640 --> 00:24:59.839 So he says, 00:25:00.100 --> 00:25:02.620 He is the image of the invisible God, 00:25:03.059 --> 00:25:05.100 the firstborn of all creation. 00:25:05.960 --> 00:25:07.519 For by him all things were created 00:25:07.519 --> 00:25:08.799 in the heavens and on earth, 00:25:09.140 --> 00:25:10.079 visible and invisible, 00:25:10.259 --> 00:25:12.660 whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities, 00:25:13.019 --> 00:25:15.799 all things were created through him and for him. 00:25:15.799 --> 00:25:17.299 And he is before all things, 00:25:17.299 --> 00:25:18.819 and in him all things hold together. 00:25:20.240 --> 00:25:21.659 Paul uses language here 00:25:21.659 --> 00:25:24.639 that points directly back to Proverbs chapter 8. 00:25:25.099 --> 00:25:26.460 In his discussion about Christ, 00:25:26.559 --> 00:25:28.980 he draws in the language used of wisdom 00:25:28.980 --> 00:25:31.419 so the people reading his letter cannot miss it. 00:25:32.480 --> 00:25:34.599 He says that Christ is the firstborn of creation, 00:25:34.940 --> 00:25:36.899 the exact same phrase that was used of wisdom 00:25:36.899 --> 00:25:38.339 in chapter 8. 00:25:38.659 --> 00:25:40.879 And now that doesn't mean that Jesus is a created being. 00:25:40.880 --> 00:25:44.380 It's a big phrase that we don't have time to get into right now, 00:25:44.500 --> 00:25:47.660 but it shows that Paul is trying to draw these connections 00:25:47.660 --> 00:25:50.000 between the person of Christ and wisdom. 00:25:51.620 --> 00:25:53.920 Also, both Paul in this passage 00:25:53.920 --> 00:25:55.920 and Proverbs chapter 8 00:25:55.920 --> 00:25:58.180 describe Christ and wisdom 00:25:58.180 --> 00:26:00.020 as agents of divine creation. 00:26:00.019 --> 00:26:04.559 They say that the world was created through wisdom and Christ. 00:26:06.079 --> 00:26:09.400 And it says that both wisdom and Christ 00:26:09.400 --> 00:26:10.980 are the power by which kings reign. 00:26:11.099 --> 00:26:12.019 Colossians 1.16, 00:26:12.579 --> 00:26:12.879 you know, 00:26:13.019 --> 00:26:16.099 all things are made by him and for him. 00:26:16.200 --> 00:26:17.839 Thrones, dominions, rulers, authorities, 00:26:18.500 --> 00:26:19.619 it all exists through Christ. 00:26:19.759 --> 00:26:21.220 And then Proverbs chapter 8 00:26:21.220 --> 00:26:24.059 says that wisdom is the power by which kings reign. 00:26:24.919 --> 00:26:25.480 So Paul, 00:26:26.039 --> 00:26:26.839 unmistakably, 00:26:27.139 --> 00:26:29.039 draws these connections between Christ and wisdom. 00:26:29.759 --> 00:26:30.619 And he does it again 00:26:30.619 --> 00:26:33.000 in 1 Corinthians chapter 1, verse 30. 00:26:33.139 --> 00:26:36.539 It says that Christ became to us the wisdom from God. 00:26:37.819 --> 00:26:39.819 That this wisdom from the Old Testament 00:26:39.819 --> 00:26:41.799 came to us in Christ. 00:26:42.940 --> 00:26:44.679 And Paul's not the only one in the New Testament 00:26:44.679 --> 00:26:47.159 who draws these connections between Christ and wisdom. 00:26:47.919 --> 00:26:49.879 The Apostle John also does it 00:26:49.879 --> 00:26:51.720 in the book of John, chapter 1, 00:26:52.220 --> 00:26:53.399 verses 1 through 14. 00:26:54.059 --> 00:26:54.879 He says, 00:26:55.039 --> 00:26:56.099 in the beginning was the word, 00:26:56.159 --> 00:26:56.879 talking about Jesus. 00:26:57.200 --> 00:26:58.099 So he was in the beginning, 00:26:58.240 --> 00:26:58.899 just like wisdom, 00:26:59.159 --> 00:26:59.819 in chapter 8. 00:27:01.359 --> 00:27:02.720 He goes on and he says 00:27:02.720 --> 00:27:04.299 that all things were made through him, 00:27:04.440 --> 00:27:05.159 in verse 3, 00:27:05.859 --> 00:27:07.579 just like all things were made through wisdom, 00:27:07.700 --> 00:27:08.799 in Proverbs chapter 8. 00:27:10.119 --> 00:27:11.599 And then he says in verse 4, 00:27:11.720 --> 00:27:13.019 in him was light, 00:27:13.700 --> 00:27:14.299 and that light, 00:27:14.539 --> 00:27:15.480 or in him was life, 00:27:15.599 --> 00:27:16.859 and that life was the light of men. 00:27:18.919 --> 00:27:21.099 Again, pointing back to Proverbs chapter 8, 00:27:21.099 --> 00:27:24.099 describing Christ as a life-giving force, 00:27:24.179 --> 00:27:26.219 just as wisdom in Proverbs 8 00:27:26.219 --> 00:27:28.059 was this life-giving thing. 00:27:29.480 --> 00:27:31.740 So when we look forward to the New Testament, 00:27:32.079 --> 00:27:34.539 when we look around the other side of the carpet, 00:27:34.599 --> 00:27:36.179 and we see them talking about Christ, 00:27:36.379 --> 00:27:38.259 not just about wisdom, 00:27:38.759 --> 00:27:41.000 we see it embodied in a person, 00:27:41.139 --> 00:27:41.919 it's himself. 00:27:41.920 --> 00:27:44.220 We see that wisdom 00:27:44.220 --> 00:27:46.920 ultimately points us to 00:27:46.920 --> 00:27:48.420 and leads us to Christ. 00:27:48.820 --> 00:27:49.400 That wisdom, 00:27:49.940 --> 00:27:51.800 it's not the same thing as Jesus, 00:27:51.940 --> 00:27:54.420 but that it's fulfilled in Jesus. 00:27:55.160 --> 00:27:58.200 So this lens through which we view all of life 00:27:58.200 --> 00:27:59.920 is ultimately interpreted 00:28:00.500 -->
