but less than marriage. 00:05:29.780 --> 00:05:32.280 It was somewhere between engagement and marriage. 00:05:32.340 --> 00:05:35.280 Much more formal than our engagement would be 00:05:35.279 --> words, she's trying to figure out if her life is in danger. 00:06:07.680 --> 00:06:11.779 It's an overwhelming experience that she's encountering. 00:06:12.279 --> 00:06:15.779 You know, it's easy to lot of traditions have risen up around Mary 00:06:24.199 --> 00:06:26.300 in the last couple of centuries to that end. 00:06:26.300 --> 00:06:31.720 There's a tradition that was codified in the mid-1800s in the Catholic Church 00:06:31.720 --> 00:06:34.460 that says that Mary was born sinless. 00:06:34.579 --> 00:06:38.079 That's the Immaculate Conception doctrine. 00:06:38.500 --> 00:06:40.360 And so that tradition is fairly recent. 00:06:40.460 --> 00:06:42.939 Last couple of hundred years is when that gained prominence. 00:06:43.220 --> 00:06:47.780 There's another tradition that says that Mary remained perpetually a virgin. 00:06:48.480 --> 00:06:51.699 And all of these traditions have risen up around the idea 00:06:51.699 --> 00:06:53.199 that Mary must have been, thing is, 00:07:01.560 --> 00:07:04.100 when you actually look at what Scripture tells us, 00:07:04.160 --> 00:07:06.379 if anything, it emphasizes the opposite. 00:07:07.439 --> 00:07:09.420 That she's profoundly ordinary. 00:07:10.460 --> 00:07:11.320 Profoundly ordinary. 00:07:12.700 --> 00:07:13.740 If you look at, 00:07:14.020 --> 00:07:16.460 she's living at home with her parents all wrapped up in all the ways that your life is about to change, 00:08:01.139 --> 00:08:02.259 and planning for your family, 00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:03.120 and all that kind of stuff. 00:08:03.120 --> 00:08:07.120 So she's in the midst of a very normal life. 00:08:08.360 --> 00:08:09.399 And then out of the blue, 00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:12.780 she has this face-to-face encounter with the beyond what our senses can detect? 00:09:22.779 --> 00:09:30.679 Abraham Kuyper was a great Dutch theologian and politician and writer and thinker. 00:09:30.679 --> 00:09:31.539 And, 00:09:31.579 --> 00:09:35.679 he says that there are essentially two ways of being conscious in the world. 00:09:36.739 --> 00:09:38.319 There's two ways of being conscious in the world. 00:09:39.479 --> 00:09:39.779
