How should we be living? 00:00:21.140 --> 00:00:23.820 We're kicking it off today with looking at 1 Peter. 00:00:24.420 --> 00:00:27.940 Since we're starting a new book, I figured it'd be good to give a little background on the book of Peter. 00:00:27.940 --> 00:00:33.020 It was written by the Apostle Peter. He was one of Jesus' closest friends. 00:00:33.520 --> 00:00:39.219 He was one of the guys, one of the 12 guys who followed Jesus around everywhere he went in his ministry. 00:00:39.719 --> 00:00:45.780 And out of those 12, he sort of had this special place where he got to see things that even some of the other 12 didn't get to see. 00:00:46.500 --> 00:00:53.960 But on the night when Jesus was put on trial right before being killed, he famously denied three times that he had ever met Jesus. 00:00:53.960 --> 00:01:03.439 After Jesus' resurrection, Jesus reinstated him, and he affirmed three times that he does actually love Jesus. 00:01:04.359 --> 00:01:11.939 And from the early days of the church, from the day of Pentecost when the church started, Peter was one of the major leaders in the church. 00:01:12.079 --> 00:01:17.579 Anyone who had heard of Jesus in the world at that time probably would have heard of Peter as well, 00:01:17.640 --> 00:01:19.960 because Peter was right there with Jesus from the start. 00:01:19.959 --> 00:01:23.059 Peter was one of the leaders in the church from the start. 00:01:23.500 --> 00:01:26.239 And so when Peter writes this letter, he starts it off saying, 00:01:26.359 --> 00:01:27.899 Peter, an apostle of Christ. 00:01:27.959 --> 00:01:31.359 And he doesn't really need to give much background or information about who he is, 00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:36.399 because anyone who knows of Jesus would have heard of this Peter guy that goes with him also. 00:01:37.339 --> 00:01:42.419 His audience, he addresses the letter to the elect exiles in the dispersion. 00:01:43.039 --> 00:01:45.919 There's a few things we know about this audience. 00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:48.180 There's a few things we don't know about this audience. 00:01:48.820 --> 00:01:50.840 One thing we do know is that they were Christians. 00:01:51.219 --> 00:01:55.900 When he says elect, he's talking about Christians, people who have been saved by Jesus. 00:01:57.060 --> 00:02:03.400 We also know that they were most likely Gentiles, not Jews, for the majority of them. 00:02:03.900 --> 00:02:06.000 The way that he addresses them later in the letter, 00:02:06.460 --> 00:02:09.879 he talks about the way of life that they had before becoming Christians, 00:02:09.879 --> 00:02:14.719 and it's a way of life that would have been characteristic of Gentiles at this time 00:02:14.719 --> 00:02:17.780 and would not have been acceptable among Jews, even if they weren't Christians. 00:02:18.620 --> 00:02:23.359 And so these are a group that maybe had some Jews in it, but primarily Gentiles. 00:02:23.560 --> 00:02:30.419 It was Christians, and we know that they were exiles in some sense. 00:02:31.539 --> 00:02:35.419 Now, the sense in which they were exiles, we're not 100% sure. 00:02:36.159 --> 00:02:38.479 It could be a political thing. 00:02:38.479 --> 00:02:41.319 If you look at the regions that he names right here, 00:02:41.379 --> 00:02:44.099 he lists off five geographic areas in the Roman Empire 00:02:44.099 --> 00:02:46.060 that are sort of all connected to each other. 00:02:47.280 --> 00:02:49.139 And around the time when this letter was written, 00:02:49.939 --> 00:02:52.139 those areas were being recolonized. 00:02:53.019 --> 00:02:54.919 Rome decided, we're going to build these areas up. 00:02:55.000 --> 00:02:57.359 We're going to send people over there to live in these areas 00:02:57.359 --> 00:02:59.560 so that they can be big cities. 00:03:00.359 --> 00:03:02.459 And they took people and sent them over there. 00:03:02.539 --> 00:03:06.120 So it could be that as he writes to these people in this area, 00:03:06.120 --> 00:03:08.480 they're actually exiles who were born somewhere else, 00:03:08.860 --> 00:03:11.460 who maybe even became Christians somewhere else, like Rome, 00:03:11.740 --> 00:03:16.180 and then got sent over to these areas to live there and colonize these areas 00:03:16.180 --> 00:03:18.300 against their will, possibly even. 00:03:19.580 --> 00:03:21.080 But that might not be the case. 00:03:21.620 --> 00:03:25.340 But either way, they're exiles in another sense, in a deeper sense. 00:03:25.340 --> 00:03:30.620 The fact that they're Christians means that they have a hope 00:03:30.620 --> 00:03:32.620 that's different than the rest of the world around it was the land of their birth or somewhere that they had been sent off 00:03:55.540 --> 00:03:57.460 to recolonize, 00:03:58.680 --> 00:03:59.760 they were in one sense, 00:03:59.900 --> 00:04:01.060 one very real sense, 00:04:01.200 --> 00:04:02.200 aliens and exiles, 00:04:02.600 --> 00:04:05.960 people who didn't fully belong in the place that they were. 00:04:07.340 --> 00:04:08.620 And as Peter writes this letter, 00:04:08.740 --> 00:04:11.920 he does it because there's suffering going on 00:04:11.920 --> 00:04:14.040 in the churches that he's writing to. 00:04:14.780 --> 00:04:16.439 These people have gone through suffering, 00:04:16.960 --> 00:04:17.879 and it's not just, you know, 00:04:18.340 --> 00:04:19.759 life has suffering. 00:04:19.759 --> 00:04:21.060 Life gets tough at times. 00:04:21.800 --> 00:04:23.579 But these people had a different type of suffering. 00:04:23.740 --> 00:04:27.220 They were suffering specifically because of their faith in Christ. 00:04:27.319 --> 00:04:30.939 They were facing trials that weren't normal to everyday life, 00:04:32.300 --> 00:04:35.060 specifically because they were following Jesus. 00:04:35.300 --> 00:04:37.699 And Peter wants to write to them and encourage them and say, 00:04:37.800 --> 00:04:39.819 look, you have this hope in Christ, 00:04:40.600 --> 00:04:43.220 and it's causing you trials, but it's worth it. 00:04:43.660 --> 00:04:48.040 And it gives you the strength to endure these trials with hope and with joy. 00:04:48.040 --> 00:04:50.560 And it's not always going to be easy. 00:04:51.920 --> trials. 00:05:03.360 --> 00:05:05.980 The first thing that I want us to notice is that he starts off 00:05:05.980 --> 00:05:07.439 not by talking about their suffering, 00:05:07.960 --> 00:05:10.560 but by talking about how amazing their salvation is. 00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:13.699 Because he needs this as a foundation, 00:05:14.180 --> 00:05:15.839 so that as they look at their suffering, 00:05:16.259 --> 00:05:18.899 they can see, you know, this is tough, 00:05:19.240 --> 00:05:20.740 but it's worth it. 00:05:21.120 --> 00:05:23.040 And he starts off in verse 2. 00:05:23.680 --> 00:05:24.259 He says, 00:05:24.259 --> 00:05:34.399 He's talking about how they became Christians, 00:05:34.620 --> 00:05:35.800 and he's starting off saying, 00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:38.800 look, your salvation is a big deal. 00:05:39.639 --> 00:05:41.599 Your salvation is so big of a deal 00:05:41.599 --> 00:05:45.120 that every individual member of the Trinity got involved in it. 00:05:45.199 --> 00:05:47.079 If you don't know much about Christianity, 00:05:47.279 --> 00:05:49.399 we believe as Christians there's one God 00:05:49.399 --> 00:05:52.319 who exists in three distinct persons, 00:05:52.539 --> 00:05:54.739 God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. 00:05:55.060 --> 00:05:57.879 And each of them works in different ways in our lives. 00:05:59.699 --> 00:06:03.399 And Peter is starting off this letter saying, 00:06:03.519 --> 00:06:06.219 look, every single individual member of the Trinity 00:06:06.219 --> 00:06:08.219 got involved in your salvation. 00:06:08.419 --> 00:06:11.659 Every single member of the Trinity cares about your salvation. 00:06:12.079 --> 00:06:15.759 Every single member of the Trinity is at work in saving you. 00:06:16.759 --> 00:06:19.259 Never, ever, ever think that your salvation 00:06:19.259 --> 00:06:21.680 is some throwaway idea. 00:06:22.599 --> 00:06:25.439 Never, ever, ever think that your salvation is unimportant. 00:06:26.519 --> 00:06:29.079 Because your salvation is so important to God 00:06:29.079 --> 00:06:32.240 that every single member of the Trinity 00:06:32.240 --> 00:06:36.240 got involved in ensuring that you would be saved. 00:06:37.259 --> 00:06:39.379 And he starts them off with this foundation 00:06:39.379 --> 00:06:43.500 from the fact that it is the Trinity at work saving us. 00:06:43.579 --> 00:06:44.599 And then he goes on, he says, 00:06:44.599 --> 00:06:48.099 Blessed be God, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:06:48.100 --> 00:06:49.939 according to his great mercy, 00:06:50.060 --> 00:06:53.080 he caused us to be born again to a living hope 00:06:53.080 --> 00:06:56.020 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 00:06:56.080 --> 00:06:58.040 He says, look, God saved us, 00:06:58.100 --> 00:07:00.840 and when he saved us, he gave us a living hope. 00:07:03.060 --> 00:07:04.260 Now from the day that we're born, 00:07:04.400 --> 00:07:06.160
