Friday crucifixion. 00:04:22.740 --> 00:04:26.780 And he's been saying to his disciples that he's going to leave them. 00:04:27.740 --> 00:04:31.460 And the result is that they're full of trouble in their hearts. 00:04:31.960 --> 00:04:38.819 Because they know that they can't continue the work that Jesus is entrusting to their hands unless Jesus is with them. 00:04:39.480 --> 00:04:43.560 And --> 00:07:22.919 I will ask the Father and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of truth. 00:07:22.920 --> 00:07:26.840 So first of all, the Spirit is a who and not a what. 00:07:27.620 --> 00:07:32.540 The Spirit is a person and not an impersonal force or thing. 00:07:33.379 --> 00:07:40.340 And as a person, he's an eternal person, not a created person who just kind of shows up here on the scene in the first century. 00:07:40.879 --> 00:07:45.980 Jesus is talking about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who existed before creation 00:07:45.980 --> 00:07:54.680 and has been related to one another in an eternal, unceasing outpouring of love, each with the other. 00:07:54.780 --> 00:07:57.819 And so Jesus says, I'm going to send you another 00:08:28.399 Now that's a striking statement because if you're like me, you often think, 00:08:28.399 --> 00:08:35.439 if only I could have been with Jesus, if only I could have seen his face or heard his voice, 00:08:35.500 --> 00:08:40.399 if only I could have watched him feed the hungry and heal the sick and raise the dead, 00:08:41.199 --> 00:08:46.220 if only I could have sat at his feet like Mary and leaned on his shoulder like John, 00:08:46.799 --> 00:08:51.879 how could it possibly be better for Jesus to go away? 00:08:52.679 --> 00:08:57.899 How could it possibly be more for us to have less of Jesus? 00:08:57.899 --> 00:08:59.579 How could that be for our good? 00:09:00.579 --> 00:09:05.379 Well, I want us to keep in mind that there were two limitations to Jesus' physical presence. 00:09:05.500 --> 00:09:11.519 First of all, Jesus' presence was local, meaning that he could be separated from his disciples 00:09:11.519 --> 00:09:14.019 and their fellowship could be interrupted. 00:09:14.139 --> 00:09:19.019 If Jesus went down to Galilee or went down to Jerusalem, some of them stayed behind in Galilee. 00:09:19.179 --> 00:09:24.980 If the disciples went out to fish on the sea and Jesus stayed on the land, they couldn't be together. 00:09:24.980 --> 00:09:32.420 And if you think about it, if Jesus were still on earth today, we would not be able to get near him. 00:09:32.519 --> 00:09:38.279 All the planes, all the ships, all the roads, they'd be packed and there'd be really, really long lines 00:09:38.279 --> 00:09:39.659 and you'd be at the back of the line. 00:09:39.659 --> 00:09:46.120 But what the Holy Spirit does is he universalizes the presence of Jesus 00:09:46.120 --> 00:09:52.620 and makes Jesus available to every disciple in every church everywhere. 00:09:53.219 --> 00:09:54.079 Pretty awesome. 00:09:54.939 --> 00:09:58.959 Jesus' presence was local, but Jesus' presence was also external, 00:09:59.959 --> 00:10:06.279 meaning that he was not able in his ministry to enter into the personalities of his disciples. 00:10:06.279 --> 00:10:11.939 He wasn't able to change them from within to get into their thoughts and their passions 00:10:11.939 --> 00:10:13.980 and their motives and their desires. 00:10:14.199 --> 00:10:18.600 But we learn here that the Holy Spirit internalizes the presence of Jesus. 00:10:18.759 --> 00:10:21.299 Jesus says the Spirit will be in you. 00:10:22.419 --> 00:10:25.799 And this is why the apostles go on and on about this. 00:10:25.860 --> 00:10:26.899 This is Ephesians 3. 00:10:27.039 --> 00:10:32.100 It says Christ dwells by his Spirit in our hearts. 00:10:32.100 --> 00:10:39.159 Or 1 Corinthians 6 says that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. 00:10:40.060 --> 00:10:43.300 And what that means is that when congregations get together to worship, 00:10:43.960 --> 00:10:46.480 Jesus is here in our midst by the Holy Spirit. 00:10:47.480 --> 00:10:50.659 That when two or three disciples get together to pray, 00:10:51.139 --> 00:10:53.879 Jesus is there in their midst by the Holy Spirit. 00:10:54.519 --> 00:10:56.980 And that when you as a Christian are alone, with Spirit-filled Christians? 00:13:02.740 --> 00:13:05.560 Well, because are they centered on Jesus 00:13:05.560 --> 00:13:08.000 or are they centered on some other center? 00:13:08.180 -->
