picture would look like? 00:02:39.780 --> 00:02:44.080 Oscar Wilde, in his novel written in 1890, 00:02:44.939 --> 00:02:47.240 a novel called The Picture of Dorian Gray, 00:02:47.439 --> 00:02:52.599 he poses this question to his readers in a frightening fashion, 00:02:52.780 --> 00:02:54.020 in a dramatic way. 00:02:54.020 --> 00:02:59.360 The story tells, the novel tells the story of this handsome young man. 00:02:59.939 --> 00:03:02.400 His name is Dorian Gray, and he has a portrait painted. 00:03:03.540 --> 00:03:05.020 He's a beautiful young man. 00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:07.060 He looks at this portrait of himself, 00:03:07.140 --> 00:03:10.760 and he realizes that one day he's going to grow old, 00:03:10.780 --> 00:03:13.700 and he begins to dread this future reality. 00:03:13.860 --> 00:03:16.040 And so in the pursuit of immortality, 00:03:16.379 --> 00:03:19.980 Dorian Gray, he makes a wish that his portrait, 00:03:19.980 --> 00:03:21.820 this beautiful portrait of himself, 00:03:21.819 --> 00:03:25.239 would grow old so that he could stay young. 00:03:25.939 --> 00:03:30.139 In a sense, he sells his soul to the devil for immortality, 00:03:30.239 --> that's locked away in this room 00:04:48.360 --> 00:04:52.019 becomes increasingly more hideous and revolting. 00:04:53.159 --> 00:04:57.220 The novel illustrates how the person we project to others 00:05:18.980 There are unpleasant scenes from the Gospel of Mark, Mark 14. 00:05:20.079 --> 00:05:24.060 Each unpleasant scene invites us to see ourselves, 00:05:24.220 --> 00:05:27.540 to see our soul in the disciples. 00:05:27.540 --> 00:05:31.460 And my friends, it isn't a pretty picture. 00:05:32.900 --> 00:05:35.180 Each of the scenes in Mark 14, 00:05:35.280 --> 00:05:38.200 it paints a picture not only of the disciples, 00:05:38.439 --> 00:05:39.939 but of ourselves. 00:05:40.379 --> 00:05:43.580 And it is a portrait that forces each of us 00:05:43.580 --> 00:05:45.120 to ask the question, 00:05:45.560 --> 00:05:48.400 what did Jesus get when he got me? 00:05:49.460 --> 00:05:52.140 What did he get when he got me? 00:05:52.139 --> 00:05:58.560 Mark 14, it's going to make us a little uncomfortable. 00:05:59.860 --> 00:06:02.360 It'll make us feel a little uneasy. 00:06:03.300 --> 00:06:06.419 But the truth is, we desperately need Mark 14. 00:06:07.939 --> 00:06:10.860 Mark 14 helps us see ourselves rightly. 00:06:11.800 --> 00:06:13.379 And we need to see ourselves rightly 00:06:13.379 --> 00:06:17.279 by looking honestly at this portrait of the disciples 00:06:17.279 --> 00:06:20.699 on the night that Jesus was arrested and betrayed. 00:06:21.519 --> 00:06:23.339 Because here's the thing, my friends. 00:06:24.099 --> 00:06:26.459 You will never feel the weight of the Gospel 00:06:26.459 --> 00:06:31.000 until you see yourselves in the disciples in Mark 14. 00:06:31.619 --> 00:06:37.339 And you will never grasp the depths of God's love for you 00:06:37.339 --> see ourselves in imperfect disciples. 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:01.900 We pray that you would open our eyes 00:10:01.900 --> 00:10:06.040 to see our shortcomings, our imperfections, 00:10:06.420 --> 00:10:07.360 our brokenness, 00:10:07.360 --> 00:10:10.580 so that we will see our need for a sinless savior. 00:10:10.860 --> 00:10:11.900 And it's through his name we pray. 00:10:12.060 --> sheep will be scattered. 00:10:39.420 --> 00:10:42.140 He reminds them of this ancient prophecy. 00:10:42.800 --> 00:10:45.560 And he says, it's time. 00:10:45.559 --> 00:10:48.759 Jesus tells his closest friends, 00:10:49.359 --> 00:10:51.279 his disciples, for three years, 00:10:51.599 --> 00:10:53.519 that they were about to deny him. 00:10:54.039 --> 00:10:55.259 They were about to fall away. 00:10:55.359 --> 00:10:56.519 They were about to desert him. 00:10:58.119 --> 00:11:01.079 And in response, the disciples essentially say, 00:11:01.259 --> 00:11:03.259 well, that's just not going to happen, Jesus. 00:11:05.659 --> 00:11:07.239 We would never desert you. 00:11:07.579 --> 00:11:08.879 We would never deny you. 00:11:08.979 --> 00:11:12.359 That prophecy must have been
