when we look at the Bible, we see how people can see that. 00:01:48.500 --> 00:01:55.019 I have to confess to you that this time that of me preaching through Samson last week and this week and next lectionary. 00:02:02.959 --> 00:02:10.259 And I have to confess, I sort of, you know, maybe if I go back, if I was able to go back in time, 00:02:10.359 --> 00:02:16.659 I'd be able to hear some of the sermons in Sunday school and books and all in a different way. 00:02:16.759 --> 00:02:20.740 But it seems to me as if whenever I heard the Old Testament being preached, 00:02:20.740 --> 00:02:25.820 it usually was sort of in the form of Pilgrim's Progress, you know, 00:02:25.860 --> 00:02:28.920 where there's each person represents a certain type of a character. 00:02:29.820 --> 00:02:35.080 And they were able to get very, very good moral lessons out of it or very good practical help out of it. 00:02:36.280 --> 00:02:41.939 But I don't know, maybe it's partially that my mind of Samson. 00:02:53.759 --> 00:02:59.740 And if we're honest, you cannot get good morals out of a guy who decides to rip off 30 people. 00:03:00.280 --> 00:03:04.300 When his plan is failed, he 00:03:56.580 Anyway, so what happened last week is we're now in the, 00:03:56.800 --> 00:04:00.520 Samson is the last of the 12 judges who's recorded in the book of Judges. 00:04:00.900 --> 00:04:07.800 The time of period between Israel entering the promised land and the beginning of the kingship. 00:04:07.800 --> 00:04:13.240 And it's a time of great chaos and great unfaithfulness in Israel. 00:04:13.680 --> 00:04:15.320 And Samson is born as a judge. 00:04:15.460 --> 00:04:20.139 The people of Israel are under the oppression of this pagan seafaring nation 00:04:20.139 --> 00:04:23.520 that has occupied part of Canaan named the Philistines. 00:04:24.100 --> 00:04:25.980 And Israel is under their dominion. 00:04:26.300 --> 00:04:29.180 And a very miraculous and wonderful story happens. 00:04:30.120 --> 00:04:33.420 The angel of the Lord appears to a woman who's never been able to have children. 00:04:33.580 --> 00:04:35.920 And the angel of the Lord says, good news. 00:04:35.980 --> 00:04:37.220 In a sense, you're going to have a baby. 00:04:37.220 --> 00:04:38.180 He's going to be a boy. 00:04:38.460 --> 00:04:45.280 And God is going to use this baby boy to be the beginning by which I deliver my people Israel from the Philistines. 00:04:45.860 --> 00:04:48.080 And then he says this boy is to be so special. 00:04:48.200 --> 00:04:50.640 He is to live a very special life right from birth. 00:04:50.740 --> 00:04:52.820 He used to have the vow of a Nazarite right from birth. 00:04:53.320 --> 00:04:54.760 And in fact, it even goes into the womb. 00:04:54.960 --> 00:04:58.520 He has to have this vow, a special time of being set aside to God. 00:04:58.519 --> 00:05:07.079 And then there's a spectacular miracle that goes along with it so the husband, Minoah, and his wife understand what's going on. 00:05:07.519 --> 00:05:13.819 And then the very last words of chapter 13 is that the Spirit of God begins to move in Samson. 00:05:13.819 --> 00:05:20.159 And so, you know, especially for Christians, you're reading this and now you're prepared for this to be a really remarkable baby. 00:05:20.819 --> 00:05:28.939 Like it's hard for a Christian to read this story and not think of John the Baptist, not think of Jesus, like not think of just it's going to be a remarkable baby. 00:05:28.939 --> 00:05:32.800 And now the story continues. 00:05:33.199 --> 00:05:35.180 And here's how chapter 14 begins. 00:05:36.939 --> 00:05:42.240 Samson went down to Timnah and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines. 00:05:43.060 --> 00:05:48.720 Then he came up and told his father and mother, I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah. 00:05:49.379 --> 00:05:51.220 Now get her for me as my wife. 00:05:51.939 --> 00:05:55.199 But his father and mother said to him, 00:05:55.199 --> 00:06:03.360 Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives or among all our people that you must go and take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines? 00:06:03.860 --> 00:06:05.639 But Samson said to his father, 00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:10.259 Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes. 00:06:10.319 --> 00:06:12.860 And just before I read the last verse, just pause here for a second. 00:06:14.560 --> 00:06:19.599 Some of you, maybe you're having a season right now where you're having great disappointment with God. 00:06:20.800 --> 00:06:24.339 But it's a very, very common thing, struggling with disappointment with God. 00:06:25.199 --> 00:06:30.739 And right off the bat, Samson's parents must have a great disappointment with God. 00:06:30.819 --> 00:06:35.139 And even those of us who are readers, there's a bit of a disappointment about what happens here. 00:06:35.659 --> 00:06:37.639 So here we have this special baby. 00:06:37.819 --> 00:06:41.839 And this special baby is going to be the one to begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines. 00:06:42.219 --> 00:06:48.679 And the first thing we see as Samson as an adult is not that he's going to deliver Israel from the Philistines, 00:06:48.759 --> 00:06:50.000 but he wants to marry them. 00:06:51.019 --> 00:06:52.339 Like that's the opposite. 00:06:52.339 --> 00:06:58.739 And the other thing in here, and it's just a little bit of an aside, but it's an important thing. 00:06:59.279 --> 00:07:02.859 The Bible doesn't teach ethnic or racial prejudice. 00:07:03.679 --> 00:07:09.399 In fact, it's only the Bible, out of all of the religious and intellectual texts in the world, 00:07:09.479 --> 00:07:13.139 there's no spiritual or religious tradition more than the Christian faith, 00:07:13.139 --> 00:07:18.979 which completely and utterly at a very deep level condemns all prejudice and all racism 00:07:18.979 --> 00:07:23.620 because it teaches that every human being is made in the image and likeness of God. 00:07:23.860 --> 00:07:29.060 Every man and every woman equally created in the image and likeness of God. 00:07:29.199 --> 00:07:32.860 It roots our dignity at a very, very fundamental level. 00:07:32.860 --> 00:07:39.180 This phrase about Samson's parents saying about them being uncircumcised, 00:07:39.400 --> 00:07:43.620 it's a pointer to, which I don't have time to go into, 00:07:43.699 --> 00:07:45.620 but I just want to sort of highlight it, 00:07:45.759 --> 00:07:50.580 is circumcision was a sign that you were under the God's covenant, 00:07:50.980 --> 00:07:52.379 that you were his covenant people. 00:07:52.379 --> 00:08:01.519 And non-Jews could be under the covenant by acknowledging the Lord as their Lord. 00:08:01.899 --> 00:08:03.480 Moses' wife wasn't Jewish. 00:08:04.560 --> 00:08:06.920 So the issue isn't somehow that they're different. 00:08:07.219 --> 00:08:11.439 Like, it wouldn't be as if, you know, I grew up Irish and my dad and mom say, 00:08:11.519 --> 00:08:15.379 never marry a Polish person or something like that, you know, 00:08:15.399 --> 00:08:18.819 or never marry a person who's French-Canadian or anything like that. 00:08:18.860 --> 00:08:20.180 No, it's not ethnic. 00:08:20.180 --> 00:08:24.759 The circumcision thing is this little bit of a reminder in the text 00:08:24.759 --> 00:08:29.819 that God desires his covenant people to marry other people of the covenant. 00:08:30.120 --> 00:08:33.080 It's in the New Testament, it says don't be unequally yoked. 00:08:33.200 --> 00:08:35.139 It's a whole other topic that, in a sense, 00:08:35.200 --> 00:08:37.200 a Christian should just marry another Christian. 00:08:38.019 --> 00:08:40.320 I just want to highlight it, but I know that it was from the Lord, 00:08:53.939 --> 00:08:56.500 for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines. 00:08:57.059 --> 00:08:59.699 At that time, the Philistines ruled over Israel. 00:08:59.839 --> 00:09:02.759 We're reminded that the Philistines rule over Israel. 00:09:04.059 --> 00:09:06.279 And you'll notice that just before this, 00:09:06.379 --> 00:09:09.720 it said Samson says that this woman is right in my eyes. 00:09:10.459 --> 00:09:13.539 And this idea is going to be emphasized again by Samson. 00:09:13.699 --> 00:09:14.720 Look at verse 5. 00:09:14.720 --> 00:09:18.080 Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah, 00:09:19.080 --> 00:09:21.000 and they came to the vineyards of Timnah. 00:09:21.519 --> 00:09:24.360 And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring. 00:09:24.759 --> 00:09:27.879 And in the original language, it's a special word for roaring. 00:09:28.460 --> 00:09:32.860 It's the word that signals that the lion is about to attack. 00:09:33.639 --> 00:09:39.019 It's not like a dog or something or an animal making noises to scare you away. 00:09:39.019 --> 00:09:42.100 It's a word that means the lion is about to attack. 00:09:48.220 --> 00:09:52.059 he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat. 00:09:52.720 --> 00:09:55.699 But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. 00:09:56.419 --> 00:09:57.799 Then he went and talked with the woman. 00:09:58.079 --> 00:10:00.319 Once again, she was right in Samson's eyes. 00:10:00.379 --> 00:10:01.860 Now just sort of pause here for a second. something so unbelievably violent to the lion? 00:10:29.560 --> 00:10:32.680 Like, what is it that God's Holy Spirit would come upon Samson, 00:10:32.679 --> 00:10:34.339 and he would do something like this? 00:10:34.899 --> 00:10:36.319 I mean, that would be a very, very common thing. 00:10:36.399 --> 00:10:39.120 I mean, some of you have seen the picture of the Vegans 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:40.839 protesting against Joe Biden. 00:10:42.639 --> 00:10:44.599 And Joe Biden's wife, you know, 00:10:44.659 --> 00:10:46.519 jumping and pushing them off the stage. 00:10:46.599 --> 00:10:48.120 I mean, like for many people in our culture, 00:10:48.219 --> 00:10:50.819 why would this Holy Spirit do that? 00:10:51.819 --> 00:10:53.399 Or allow Samson to do that? 00:10:53.439 --> 00:10:54.659 And that's a bit of a puzzle, 00:10:54.659 --> 00:10:55.939 which is only going to get deeper 00:10:55.939 --> 00:10:57.479 as we see the next two times 00:10:57.479 --> 00:11:00.859 that the Holy Spirit rushes upon Samson's life. 00:11:00.979 --> 00:11:02.299 Well, what happens next? 00:11:02.679 --> 00:11:05.120 Remember, he doesn't tell his mom and dad what happened. 00:11:05.259
