So it's Luke chapter 23 and verses 35 to 43. 00:00:20.320 --> 00:00:24.280 And last time I was with you on a Sunday morning we were looking at the first of the sayings of 00:00:24.280 --> 00:00:29.300 the Lord Jesus from the cross and I'm a great believer in simply just moving on to the next 00:00:29.300 --> 00:00:33.859 thing and keeping going and trusting the Lord to speak to our hearts. So we're going to look at the 00:00:33.859 --> 00:00:40.060 second saying from the cross which actually just continues on where we left off the last time where 00:00:40.060 --> 00:00:47.780 Jesus prayed, Father forgive them for they do not know what they are doing. So read from verse 35. 00:00:47.780 --> 00:00:50.540 It'll also be on the screen in front of you. 00:00:50.539 --> 00:01:02.200 The people stood watching and the rulers even sneered at him. They said he saved others let 00:01:02.200 --> 00:01:10.120 him save himself if he is God's Messiah the chosen one. The soldiers also came up and mocked him. 00:01:10.120 --> 00:01:16.120 They offered him wine vinegar and said if you are the king of the Jews save yourself. 00:01:17.880 --> 00:01:23.939 There was a written notice above him which read this is the king of the Jews. 00:01:25.640 --> 00:01:34.240 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him. Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us. 00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:42.879 But the other criminal rebuked him. Don't you fear God he said since you are under the same sentence. 00:01:43.519 --> 00:01:51.619 We are punished justly for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong. 00:01:53.239 --> 00:02:00.640 Then he said to Jesus. Then he said Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom. 00:02:00.640 --> 00:02:10.599 And Jesus answered him. Truly I tell you. holiday. 00:02:48.159 --> 00:02:54.020 The feeling of warm sand between your toes and the sun upon your skin. 00:02:54.740 --> 00:02:57.379 Well it doesn't get much better than that. 00:02:58.219 --> 00:02:59.699 If you are busy parents. 00:03:00.039 --> 00:03:01.960 And as much as you love your children. 00:03:02.099 --> 00:03:03.060 And I know you do. 00:03:03.719 --> 00:03:07.939 Perhaps your idea of paradise is a weekend away without the children. 00:03:08.939 --> 00:03:11.359 If you are grandparents with an empty nest. 00:03:12.019 --> 00:03:15.620 Nothing fills you with greater joy than all of the grandchildren coming. 00:03:15.620 --> 00:03:17.500 And staying for the weekends. 00:03:18.439 --> 00:03:22.439 And for others it might be the idea of simply getting away with a group of Because however different our ideas of paradise might be. 00:03:49.000 --> 00:03:53.259 They probably stir up the same kinds of feelings. 00:03:54.919 --> 00:03:55.639 Fulfillment. 00:03:56.280 --> 00:03:56.879 Peace. 00:03:57.599 --> 00:03:58.219 Delight. 00:03:58.879 --> 00:03:59.740 Contentment. 00:04:00.379 --> 00:04:00.879 Joy. 00:04:01.560 --> 00:04:02.159 Pleasure. 00:04:03.539 --> 00:04:07.120 That place that you would like to stay forever. 00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:12.900 And never have to go back to the daily routine of normal life. 00:04:13.860 --> 00:04:17.199 That's the promise of paradise. 00:04:18.939 --> 00:04:26.819 And that's exactly what Jesus offers one of these criminals who hangs on the cross next to him. 00:04:27.199 --> 00:04:30.439 The promise of paradise. 00:04:30.439 --> 00:04:37.879 Now it's difficult to know what this man knew about Jesus before the day of his execution. 00:04:38.839 --> 00:04:45.100 He has certainly heard Jesus ask God to forgive the people who are responsible for his death. 00:04:45.100 --> 00:04:49.580 And he seems convinced that Jesus is the promised Messiah. 00:04:50.939 --> 00:04:55.439 So here on the cross in verse 42 with his dying breath he says, 00:04:55.920 --> 00:05:01.000 Jesus remember me when you come into your kingdom. 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:06.120 Well it is a bold request isn't it? 00:05:06.920 --> 00:05:11.019 By a man who has absolutely nothing to offer. 00:05:12.220 --> 00:05:14.480 But he asks it just the same. 00:05:15.759 --> 00:05:18.740 And more surprising yet is Jesus' response. 00:05:18.740 --> 00:05:21.620 Truly I tell you, 00:05:22.040 --> 00:05:26.500 Today you will be with me in paradise. 00:05:27.860 --> 00:05:34.460 You see the promise of paradise is given to this man immediately upon death. 00:05:35.319 --> 00:05:38.120 It's more than he could ever imagine. 00:05:39.560 --> 00:05:45.519 He simply asked Jesus to remember me when you come into your kingdom. answer to this request would come much sooner than this man had hoped. 00:06:10.699 --> 00:06:14.600 He wasn't going to rest in some kind of unconscious state, 00:06:14.900 --> 00:06:17.420 awaiting the kingdom of Jesus to be established, 00:06:17.420 --> 00:06:20.180 sometime in the way off distant future. 00:06:21.620 --> 00:06:24.080 His soul wasn't going to be put on ice, 00:06:24.560 --> 00:06:26.379 awaiting the resurrection of the body. 00:06:27.720 --> 00:06:33.439 No, he would be with Jesus that very day. 00:06:33.439 --> 00:06:36.839 As believers in Jesus, 00:06:36.839 --> 00:06:39.439 this is the wonderful hope that we have. 00:06:40.100 --> 00:06:42.279 That though our bodies are buried in the ground, 00:06:42.379 --> 00:06:47.699 we do so in sure and certain hope of the resurrection of the body when Jesus comes again. 00:06:48.379 --> 00:06:52.300 Not resting in some kind of unconscious state until he comes. 00:06:52.300 --> 00:06:55.560 But no, immediately upon death, 00:06:55.560 --> 00:06:59.680 we enter into what Jesus calls paradise. 00:07:01.280 --> 00:07:06.060 But we are probably more familiar with calling heaven. 00:07:06.060 --> 00:07:13.620 Now popular thinking about heaven usually conjures up all kinds of images of clouds and harps and the angels. 00:07:14.759 --> 00:07:19.160 And the reality is that the Bible doesn't give us a lot of information about heaven. 00:07:19.899 --> 00:07:22.560 Truth is, it's pretty light on the details. 00:07:22.560 --> 00:07:26.379 Rather, when the Bible speaks about heaven, 00:07:26.500 --> 00:07:31.220 it's less focused on the what and more focused on the who. 00:07:33.019 --> 00:07:39.480 Ultimately, the promise of paradise is less about a place and more about a person. 00:07:39.480 --> 00:07:43.600 And we see that here in the words of the Lord Jesus. 00:07:44.520 --> 00:07:48.520 He tells this dying man that immediately upon death, 00:07:49.020 --> 00:07:52.480 he will be with Jesus. 00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:56.700 Jesus says, truly I tell you today, 00:07:57.020 --> 00:08:01.080 you will be with me in paradise. 00:08:02.500 --> 00:08:05.980 You see, ultimately that is what makes heaven heaven. 00:08:06.319 --> 00:08:08.439 The presence of Jesus. 00:08:09.480 --> 00:08:14.200 Remember the apostle Paul described it as being away from the body 00:08:14.200 --> 00:08:18.439 and at home with the Lord. 00:08:19.980 --> 00:08:21.819 Yes, the body dies. 00:08:22.160 --> 00:08:24.720 Yes, the body is put to rest in the ground. 00:08:24.960 --> 00:08:31.460 But the soul, the person, is immediately at home with the Lord. 00:08:34.519 --> 00:08:38.259 It's for that reason that Paul, as he's in prison and threatened with death, 00:08:38.259 --> 00:08:38.840 could write, 00:08:39.480 --> 00:08:44.600 I desire to depart and be with Christ, 00:08:45.299 --> 00:08:47.460 which is better by far. 00:08:48.419 --> 00:08:50.980 It's what enabled the first Christian martyr, Stephen, 00:08:50.980 --> 00:08:52.639 to say with his dying breath, 00:08:53.139 --> 00:08:56.740 Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 00:08:56.740 --> 00:09:01.320 See what both Paul and Stephen are confident of? 00:09:01.460 --> 00:09:06.740 Immediately upon death, they would be with Jesus. 00:09:06.740 --> 00:09:12.899 Now, many of us take comfort in the knowledge that in death, 00:09:13.700 --> 00:09:17.299 we will be reunited with a loved one who has died in the Lord. 00:09:18.259 --> 00:09:21.539 I completely understand why we do that. 00:09:22.340 --> 00:09:26.220 But the comfort of the gospel is far greater than that. 00:09:26.220 --> 00:09:31.279 The comfort of the gospel is that they will be with Jesus 00:09:31.279 --> 00:09:34.860 and that we will be with Jesus 00:09:34.860 --> 00:09:40.040 and it is the presence of Jesus that makes heaven heaven. 00:09:41.320 --> 00:09:43.720 Not the presence of those that we love. 00:09:43.720 --> 00:09:48.100 And it's the presence of Jesus 00:09:48.100 --> 00:09:54.700 that would welcome this dying criminal into paradise. 00:09:57.220 --> 00:10:01.360 This dying thief immediately upon death would be with Jesus 00:10:01.360 --> 00:10:05.340 awaiting his coming kingdom. 00:10:06.420 --> 00:10:08.960 Remember, that was his request in the first place. 00:10:08.960 --> 00:10:13.800 Jesus, remember me when you come into your he's not attempting to correct the man's theology. 00:10:28.300 --> 00:10:28.980 He's not saying, 00:10:29.120 --> 00:10:31.460 no, forget this talk about a coming kingdom. 00:10:32.100 --> 00:10:34.740 Today, you're going to be with me in paradise. 00:10:34.740 --> 00:10:40.779 No, the man's understanding does need to be expanded. 00:10:41.379 --> 00:10:43.100 It does need to be filled out. 00:10:43.519 --> 00:10:44.580 It is incomplete, 00:10:45.440 --> 00:10:48.220 but it is not incorrect. 00:10:50.360 --> 00:10:53.139 And perhaps the same thing could be said 00:10:53.139 --> 00:10:54.919 about our thinking. 00:10:56.360 --> 00:11:00.180 You see, if your future hope is only of heaven, 00:11:01.000 --> 00:11:02.299 of paradise, 00:11:02.299 --> 00:11:05.679 of what happens immediately upon death, 00:11:06.799 --> 00:11:09.799 then your theology is just as incomplete 00:11:09.799 --> 00:11:12.639 as the dying thief. 00:11:14.279 --> 00:11:17.439 His thinking was too far into the future, 00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:22.259 but perhaps yours is too immediate. 00:11:23.939 --> 00:11:26.759 You see, the dying thief is thinking 00:11:26.759 --> 00:11:29.039 only of the future kingdom 00:11:29.039 --> 00:11:32.019 with little or no understanding 00:11:32.019 --> 00:11:34.219 of the immediate promise 00:11:34.219 --> 00:11:36.599 that Jesus offers of paradise. 00:11:38.500 --> 00:11:40.980 But perhaps yours is only focused 00:11:40.980 --> 00:11:43.079 on the immediate promise of heaven 00:11:43.079 --> 00:11:46.319 with little or no thought 00:11:46.319 --> 00:11:49.379 of the world that is yet to come. 00:11:50.319 --> 00:11:52.019 What the Bible describes 00:11:52.019 --> 00:11:53.360 as the new heavens 00:11:53.360 --> 00:11:55.459 and the new earth. 00:11:55.460 --> 00:11:58.960 You see, the end of the Bible, 00:11:59.019 --> 00:11:59.940 and I know that you've been looking 00:11:59.940 --> 00:12:00.920 at this recently, 00:12:01.840 --> 00:12:04.780 finishes with the most incredible imagery, 00:12:05.700 --> 00:12:07.139 picturing the new Jerusalem 00:12:07.139 --> 00:12:09.280 with God himself as the temple 00:12:09.280 --> 00:12:11.180 descending from heaven 00:12:11.180 --> 00:12:13.420 so that as John describes it, 00:12:13.600 --> 00:12:15.080 God's dwelling place 00:12:15.080 --> 00:12:17.080 is now among the people 00:12:17.080 --> 00:12:19.900 and he will dwell with them. 00:12:19.899 --> 00:12:24.379 It is literally heaven upon earth. 00:12:25.779 --> 00:12:28.340 God makes this new earth 00:12:28.340 --> everlasting kingdom 00:14:24.580 --> 00:14:28.759 on a new heavens and earth. 00:14:30.840 --> 00:14:33.879 If the criminal's concept of the afterlife 00:14:33.879 --> 00:14:36.420 was incomplete and limited, 00:14:37.540 --> 00:14:39.460 because he was missing the assurance 00:14:39.460 --> 00:14:41.220 of paradise upon death, 00:14:42.500 --> 00:14:44.520 ours is just as incomplete. 00:14:45.520 --> 00:14:49.220 Perhaps even more incomplete than his. 00:14:49.220 --> 00:14:53.240 If we are missing the very best parts 00:14:53.240 --> 00:14:55.440 of all that God has promised, 00:14:56.440 --> 00:15:00.320 a real, resurrected, physical life 00:15:00.320 --> 00:15:04.700 on a real, renewed, physical earth, 00:15:05.440 --> 00:15:08.220 on which God will dwell 00:15:08.220 --> 00:15:11.180 with his people forever. 00:15:11.179 --> 00:15:14.899 The criminal on the cross 00:15:14.899 --> 00:15:17.639 simply asks Jesus to remember him 00:15:17.639 --> 00:15:19.459 when he comes into his agent tries to sell you 00:16:23.820 --> 00:16:25.000 the promise of paradise, 00:16:25.300 --> 00:16:27.000 you already have this question 00:16:27.000 --> 00:16:28.800 going around in your mind. 00:16:29.540 --> 00:16:32.700 What will this cost? 00:16:32.700 --> 00:16:38.759 So what is the price of paradise? 00:16:39.860 --> 00:16:42.180 We've heard the promise of paradise, 00:16:42.680 --> 00:16:46.080 but how much will it cost? 00:16:48.080 --> 00:16:50.340 Well, here, the promise of paradise 00:16:50.340 --> 00:16:52.379 is offered to someone 00:16:52.379 --> 00:16:54.740 who was deserving judgment. 00:16:54.740 --> 00:16:58.399 The two men crucified with Jesus 00:16:58.399 --> 00:17:00.560 are identified throughout as criminals. 00:17:01.120 --> 00:17:03.419 We see that in verse 32 and 39 00:17:03.419 --> 00:17:04.440 and again in 40. 00:17:04.839 --> 00:17:06.620 They are lawbreakers. 00:17:07.620 --> 00:17:08.900 These are men whose crimes 00:17:08.900 --> 00:17:10.539 are so serious, in fact, 00:17:11.120 --> 00:17:13.620 that they have been sentenced to death. 00:17:14.660 --> 00:17:15.880 And in the Roman world, 00:17:16.039 --> 00:17:18.000 that was by means of crucifixion. 00:17:18.000 --> 00:17:20.400 Now, in other cultures 00:17:20.400 --> 00:17:21.400 and at different times, 00:17:21.539 --> 00:17:23.420 executions were swift. 00:17:24.279 --> 00:17:26.099 Whether it was the guillotine in France 00:17:26.099 --> 00:17:27.380 or the gallows in England, 00:17:27.859 --> 00:17:30.400 it was meant to be quick and clinical. 00:17:31.559 --> 00:17:33.559 But it was not that way in the Roman world. 00:17:35.160 --> 00:17:37.160 Crucifixion was purposefully designed 00:17:37.160 --> 00:17:39.240 to be slow and painful. 00:17:40.200 --> 00:17:41.660 The condemned person 00:17:41.660 --> 00:17:43.240 hung upon the cross, 00:17:43.619 --> 00:17:46.160 experiencing both excruciating pain 00:17:46.160 --> 00:17:47.000 in their body 00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:49.620 and suffocation in their lungs. 00:17:50.279 --> 00:17:51.740 It could go on for hours, 00:17:51.840 --> 00:17:52.880 even into death. 00:17:54.120 --> 00:17:56.660 But it was a warning to all around 00:17:56.660 --> 00:17:58.220 that this was the judgment 00:17:58.220 --> 00:18:00.160 that fell on those 00:18:00.160 --> 00:18:02.640 who broke the Roman laws. 00:18:04.259 --> 00:18:05.500 Now, one of those criminals 00:18:05.500 --> 00:18:08.100 is able to recognize just that. 00:18:08.940 --> 00:18:09.980 Look at verse 41. 00:18:10.160 --> 00:18:11.100 He says to the other, 00:18:11.940 --> 00:18:14.100 we are punished justly 00:18:14.099 --> 00:18:16.259 for we are getting 00:18:16.259 --> 00:18:18.799 what our deeds deserve. 00:18:20.059 --> 00:18:21.799 On each side of Jesus 00:18:21.799 --> 00:18:24.759 hang those who are deserving judgment. 00:18:26.579 --> 00:18:28.459 But there is a greater judgment 00:18:28.459 --> 00:18:29.879 than that of the Roman Empire. 00:18:30.779 --> 00:18:32.599 It is a judgment far greater 00:18:32.599 --> 00:18:33.359 than any judgment 00:18:33.359 --> 00:18:35.399 that we could experience in this life. 00:18:36.079 --> 00:18:38.439 And it is the judgment of God. 00:18:38.440 --> 00:18:41.080 It is a punishment 00:18:41.080 --> 00:18:43.340 that never comes to an end. 00:18:44.680 --> 00:18:47.400 It is the eternal judgment of hell. 00:18:48.840 --> 00:18:50.820 One of these criminals fears God 00:18:50.820 --> 00:18:52.400 just as little as he has feared 00:18:52.400 --> 00:18:53.360 the Roman Empire. 00:18:54.820 --> 00:18:56.220 But the other is aware 00:18:56.220 --> 00:18:58.480 that whatever judgment he faces now, 00:19:00.080 --> 00:19:02.279 there is an even greater judgment 00:19:02.279 --> 00:19:03.620 yet to come. 00:19:04.759 --> 00:19:06.580 He pleads with the other criminal 00:19:06.579 --> 00:19:09.019 that if he will not take seriously
