to listen to the one who is speaking. 00:26:38.160 --> 00:26:45.380 And as we turn to Psalm 29, there we find the one who is indeed speaking. 00:26:46.019 --> 00:26:49.200 For you see the phrase used --> 00:27:33.480 We can enjoy relative peace, as it were, over the summer months, 00:27:33.519 --> 00:27:38.139 although even then we're not immune to storms and gales coming upon us either. 00:27:39.000 --> 00:27:41.759 But in these times, as we move into these months, 00:27:42.179 --> 00:27:45.940 and around the world, we start to see that the seasons change. 00:27:46.759 --> 00:27:49.779 And in this last week, we've seen it locally ourselves, 00:27:50.539 --> 00:27:52.619 with the gale that came through on Friday. 00:27:52.619 --> 00:27:56.619 And we've seen it far and wide as well in the United States, 00:27:57.359 --> 00:27:59.939 with the hurricane that passed through there, 00:28:00.000 --> 00:28:02.559 and the devastation that that brings. 00:28:03.539 --> 00:28:08.799 There are these storms in life that will always come our way. 00:28:09.379 --> 00:28:12.799 And sometimes it's impossible to shelter from them, 00:28:12.819 --> 00:28:15.319 or to get out of the way of these storms. 00:28:16.259 --> 00:28:20.719 We find ourselves caught up in them in many different ways. 00:28:20.720 --> 00:28:24.380 We don't want to be a people who are out at sea, for example, 00:28:24.460 --> 00:28:25.819 when these storms come. 00:28:26.680 --> 00:28:27.860 Ferries don't sail. 00:28:28.299 --> 00:28:30.220 There's not much movement around the coast. 00:28:30.299 tornadoes, all of these things, 00:29:46.900 --> 00:29:49.360 they leave a devastation behind them. 00:29:50.360 --> 00:29:52.440 But again, when we look at the psalms, 00:29:52.620 --> 00:29:56.100 they speak of these things, but maybe in a different way. 00:29:56.860 --> 00:29:59.180 And at times it's in a way that we don't maybe see 00:29:59.180 --> 00:30:01.779 as powerful as the natural psalmist uses the illustration of the natural world 00:30:13.160 --> 00:30:15.980 to remind us of the Creator. 00:30:16.960 --> 00:30:21.539 The Lord, whose voice it is, that is over all things. age now, we see storms come. 00:30:44.519 --> 00:30:46.180 And they are given a name. 00:30:47.220 --> 00:30:49.920 The hurricane in the United States was Hurricane Ian. 00:30:50.759 --> 00:30:54.059 And they've got a whole season of hurricane season 00:30:54.059 --> 00:30:57.160 where each hurricane will have a name. 00:30:57.160 --> 00:31:00.019 The same as the storms that will come our way 00:31:00.019 --> 00:31:01.360 during the winter months as well. 00:31:01.400 --> 00:31:03.180 They'll all be given a name. 00:31:04.160 --> 00:31:06.660 And if you want to give a name to the storm 00:31:06.660 --> 00:31:08.759 that is being spoken of here in the psalm 00:31:08.759 --> 00:31:09.960 and the book of Hebrews, 00:31:10.560 --> 00:31:12.300 it's the storm judgment. 00:31:13.560 --> 00:31:15.100 The storm is judgment. 00:31:15.900 --> 00:31:18.580 And that day when the Lord is going to come 00:31:18.580 --> 00:31:21.860 and judge all his people. 00:31:21.859 --> 00:31:26.439 Again, we just say for a minute that the psalms, 00:31:26.599 --> 00:31:30.740 they use the imagery to remind us of the greatness of God. 00:31:32.459 --> 00:31:34.879 In Psalm 8, the psalmist says, 00:31:35.000 --> 00:31:38.019 O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name 00:31:38.019 --> 00:31:39.779 in all the earth. 00:31:40.199 --> 00:31:42.279 The psalmist is lifting up his eyes 00:31:42.279 --> 00:31:45.139 and seeing the heavens created by God 00:31:45.140 --> 00:31:49.860 and the way his name is spread all over the world. 00:31:50.940 --> 00:31:55.640 Psalm 19 uses the imagery of the sun and its warmth. 00:31:55.900 --> 00:31:59.040 The heavens declare the glory of God 00:31:59.040 --> 00:32:03.020 and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 00:32:03.560 --> 00:32:07.240 There are these ways that we see the calmness of creation 00:32:07.240 --> 00:32:09.360 and the beauty of the Lord. 00:32:09.359 --> 00:32:14.179 But there's other ways, as we saw in Psalm 107, 00:32:14.819 --> 00:32:16.959 where it speaks about the Lord 00:32:16.959 --> 00:32:20.099 who causes the waves to rise, the storms to come, 00:32:20.619 --> 00:32:23.379 and the Lord who is able to bring peace. 00:32:24.500 --> 00:32:27.579 Psalm 65, verse 3 says, 00:32:27.699 --> 00:32:32.099 When we were overwhelmed by sin and guilt upon us lay. 00:32:32.740 --> 00:32:35.199 The psalmist there is speaking about the flood. 00:32:35.759 --> 00:32:38.479 We were overwhelmed by the waters of sin. 00:32:38.480 --> 00:32:40.460 There was nothing that we could do 00:32:40.460 --> 00:32:43.360 to stop that flood coming upon us 00:32:43.360 --> 00:32:46.140 unless the Lord intervened. 00:32:46.559 --> 00:32:48.420 And the psalm goes on to show that. 00:32:49.279 --> 00:32:50.460 And here in Psalm 29, 00:32:50.720 --> 00:32:53.779 we have this illustration from the natural world, 00:32:53.860 --> 00:32:56.099 a time of a great storm. 00:32:57.620 --> 00:32:59.900 And it's teaching us, 00:33:00.099 --> 00:33:02.860 I want to see three things this evening. 00:33:03.400 --> 00:33:06.660 As we think of this storm called judgment 00:33:06.660 --> 00:33:10.759 and the devastation that that can cause to us. 00:33:11.540 --> 00:33:13.500 Unless we find refuge, 00:33:14.040 --> 00:33:17.100 this psalm is reminding us of how to be prepared 00:33:17.100 --> 00:33:19.320 and to weather that storm 00:33:19.320 --> 00:33:21.519 and to come through that storm 00:33:21.519 --> 00:33:24.920 with the peace that only God can give. 00:33:24.920 --> 00:33:30.640 So today, despite the storms that we see around us 00:33:30.640 --> 00:33:33.940 and despite us going into another stormy season, 00:33:34.620 --> 00:33:37.300 we can come and see that there is peace 00:33:37.300 --> 00:33:40.700 to be found with God from this storm judgment. 00:33:41.480 --> 00:33:43.620 And the three things I want us to see in this psalm, 00:33:43.800 --> 00:33:46.259 how it tells us, first of all, 00:33:46.820 --> 00:33:48.500 the way to be prepared. 00:33:49.500 --> 00:33:51.300 If we know a storm is coming, 00:33:51.299 --> 00:33:53.720 we prepare for it. 00:33:54.619 --> 00:33:56.740 The second thing we see in this psalm 00:33:56.740 --> 00:33:59.259 is the powerful reminder it gives 00:33:59.259 --> 00:34:02.700 of the devastation that this storm brings. 00:34:03.240 --> 00:34:06.579 We see that in verse 3 through to verse 9. 00:34:07.619 --> 00:34:09.000 But then at the end of the psalm, 00:34:09.079 --> 00:34:10.539 in verse 10 and 11, 00:34:11.079 --> 00:34:14.460 we see that we can find peace and strength. 00:34:14.460 --> 00:34:18.199 And that we can find that in the Lord. 00:34:19.119 --> 00:34:20.720 And all of these are related 00:34:20.720 --> 00:34:24.760 to listening to the voice of the Lord. 00:34:25.539 --> 00:34:27.159 So the first thing we see is 00:34:27.159 --> 00:34:30.099 to be prepared for the storm. 00:34:31.039 --> 00:34:32.280 And the way to be prepared, 00:34:32.420 --> 00:34:34.780 as the psalmist is making clear for us here, 00:34:34.860 --> 00:34:37.820 is to be prepared by praise. 00:34:37.820 --> 00:34:41.460 If you know a storm is coming, 00:34:41.960 --> 00:34:45.539 we often get warnings days in advance now 00:34:45.539 --> 00:34:46.900 that storms are coming. 00:34:47.680 --> 00:34:49.280 And if we know a storm is coming, 00:34:49.360 --> 00:34:50.019 what do we do? 00:34:50.780 --> 00:34:52.640 We make sure that everything that was loose 00:34:52.640 --> 00:34:55.559 and outside, maybe over the calm summer months, One of the greatest things that you often see 00:35:04.100 --> 00:35:06.860 storms take with them is trampolines. 00:35:06.860 --> 00:35:08.800 You often see it in the news 00:35:08.800 --> 00:35:11.880 where trampolines are seen rolling down the road. 00:35:12.720 --> 00:35:13.960 And so if you've got a trampoline 00:35:13.960 --> 00:35:15.460 and you know a storm is coming, begins 00:35:43.559 --> 00:35:45.980 with the theme of worship. 00:35:47.840 --> 00:35:49.740 Ascribe, it says to the Lord, 00:35:50.300 --> 00:35:51.260 O heavenly beings, 00:35:51.380 --> 00:35:54.139 ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. 00:35:54.380 --> 00:35:57.500 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name. 00:35:57.679 --> 00:36:01.579 Worship the Lord in splendor of holiness. 00:36:01.579 --> 00:36:06.099 And in the book of Hebrews chapter 12, 00:36:06.179 --> 00:36:08.619 we read quite similar things there as well. 00:36:09.619 --> 00:36:12.400 It speaks in verse 28 about us being grateful 00:36:12.400 --> 00:36:14.819 for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken 00:36:14.819 --> 00:36:18.259 and thus let us offer to God 00:36:18.259 --> 00:36:21.779 acceptable worship with reverence and awe 00:36:21.779 --> 00:36:25.219 for our God is a consuming fire. 00:36:25.219 --> 00:36:29.579 Both of these texts are speaking about 00:36:29.579 --> 00:36:32.579 the devastation that the Lord can bring. 00:36:33.619 --> 00:36:35.239 And living in light of that 00:36:35.239 --> 00:36:36.599 and the fear of the Lord 00:36:36.599 --> 00:36:40.399 being prepared for this storm that's coming. 00:36:40.400 --> 00:36:43.940 The Lord is a gracious God. 00:36:44.780 --> 00:36:45.780 He gives time. 00:36:46.480 --> 00:36:48.900 He warns us of this time that's coming, 00:37:05.900 They were not ready for this storm coming. 00:37:06.680 --> 00:37:09.660 God was not their refuge and their strength, 00:37:09.800 --> 00:37:11.300 as Psalm 46 says. 00:37:11.400 --> 00:37:13.700 Instead, they were putting their confidence, 00:37:14.000 --> 00:37:15.580 their trust, their strength, 00:37:16.059 --> 00:37:17.820 and giving glory to the idols 00:37:17.820 --> 00:37:19.700 and everything else that they worshipped. 00:37:20.260 --> 00:37:23.980 They were giving false worship to false gods 00:37:23.980 --> 00:37:28.260 when God the Lord was there for them. 00:37:28.280 --> 00:37:30.240 And they were ignoring the warnings 00:37:30.240 --> 00:37:31.460 that he was giving. 00:37:32.320 --> 00:37:34.680 David, in writing this Psalm, 00:37:34.860 --> 00:37:37.260 makes it clear that there is no other 00:37:37.260 --> 00:37:39.840 who is due praise like the Lord. 00:37:40.580 --> 00:37:43.700 That's the theme that you see throughout this Psalm.
