I'd like for you to turn with me to Mark chapter 5, verses 21 through 43. 00:00:10.779 --> 00:00:15.820 This passage contains an account about an extraordinary day in Jesus' life. 00:00:16.359 --> 00:00:20.339 And it's extraordinary not so much because of the miracles that Jesus worked, 00:00:20.460 --> 00:00:28.580 but because on this day, Mark lets us see Jesus on what you and I would normally call a very bad day. 00:00:28.579 --> 00:00:35.439 This passage shows Jesus when he's tired, when he's surrounded by chaos, 00:00:35.479 --> 00:00:39.159 when everything seems to be going wrong, when he's rejected, when he's questioned, 00:00:39.619 --> 00:00:42.599 and even when he's laughed at. 00:00:43.539 --> 00:00:49.619 And you know, I think that we've all had a lot of days like this recently with this pandemic going on 00:00:49.619 --> 00:00:51.599 when it seems like everything's going wrong. 00:00:51.780 --> 00:00:55.099 And so while we're looking at Jesus this morning, verse by verse 00:02:30.139 --> 00:02:35.039 because in this case I think it will help us encounter Jesus more personally. 00:02:35.819 --> 00:02:39.060 And before we start on the passage, I want to give you a little background to it 00:02:39.060 --> 00:02:44.439 because like most bad days, the one that we're going to read about really started the night before 00:02:44.439 --> 00:02:46.379 with a bad night's sleep. 00:02:46.900 --> 00:02:50.360 In the chapter previous to the one we're going to be looking at, in chapter 4, 00:02:50.699 --> 00:02:53.180 Mark tells us that the night before our passage begins, 00:02:53.340 --> 00:02:58.900 Jesus and his disciples had spent the night sailing across the Sea of Galilee. 00:02:59.580 --> 00:03:02.500 And Jesus was forced to sleep in the boat. 00:03:02.980 --> 00:03:06.340 Now this boat was probably just a regular old fishing vessel, 00:03:06.340 --> 00:03:09.080 and so no doubt it would have been uncomfortable for Jesus. 00:03:09.259 --> 00:03:13.939 But to make matters worse, a terrible storm suddenly arose. 00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:16.219 The ship started sinking. 00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:17.539 The disciples are terrified. 00:03:17.860 --> 00:03:19.819 They wake Jesus up and they ask him. 00:03:19.900 --> 00:03:21.980 In fact, they almost accuse him. 00:03:22.400 --> 00:03:22.780 They say, 00:03:22.920 --> 00:03:27.439 Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? 00:03:28.800 --> 00:03:31.460 And then Jesus miraculously calms the storm. 00:03:31.580 --> 00:03:32.960 The boat makes it to shore. 00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:39.060 Remember, immediately Jesus is confronted by a man who is terribly demonized with a horde of demons. 00:03:39.320 --> 00:03:40.480 He casts them out. 00:03:40.580 --> 00:03:41.580 He delivers the man. 00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:42.700 He has mercy on him. 00:03:42.920 --> 00:03:45.480 But as soon as the people of the country gather around him 00:03:45.480 --> 00:03:47.680 and they see that he delivered a man from demons, 00:03:47.939 --> 00:03:49.280 they reject him. 00:03:50.520 --> 00:03:51.900 And they ask him to leave. 00:03:53.460 --> 00:03:55.939 Now how would you like to start your day off that way? 00:03:56.460 --> 00:03:58.819 You wake in the middle of the night with your boat sinking 00:03:58.819 --> 00:04:01.739 and your disciples making unfounded accusations about you. 00:04:02.439 --> 00:04:06.039 And then later when you work a miracle, you get rejected because of it. 00:04:06.919 --> 00:04:09.799 So Jesus has to get right back in his boat 00:04:09.799 --> 00:04:12.819 and sail right back across the Sea of Galilee. 00:04:13.479 --> 00:04:18.819 And this is where we begin our passage in Mark chapter 5, verse 21. 00:04:20.500 --> 00:04:21.199 Mark writes, 00:04:21.199 --> 00:04:33.420 If you read the Gospels, you'll see that whenever crowds gather around Jesus by the seashore, 00:04:33.539 --> 00:04:35.240 he doesn't just hang out and relax. 00:04:35.339 --> 00:04:37.219 He's always teaching them. 00:04:38.060 --> 00:04:42.759 And I think we can be pretty sure that this is exactly what Jesus is doing here. 00:04:44.180 --> 00:04:47.099 So it's been a mixed bag for Jesus so far. 00:04:47.199 --> 00:04:49.800 He was rejected by one crowd across the Sea of Galilee. 00:04:49.800 --> 00:04:52.139 Here we see him being accepted by another crowd. 00:04:52.480 --> 00:04:57.259 But one thing we can know for sure is that Jesus is definitely tired. 00:04:59.120 --> 00:05:01.520 But instead of packing it in and going home, 00:05:01.720 --> 00:05:04.000 he seems to be doing what he always does, 00:05:04.180 --> 00:05:07.699 continuing with his ministry and teaching the crowd. 00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:14.460 Now, if Jesus is like me, he's probably looking forward to getting some rest. 00:05:14.560 --> 00:05:17.759 But this day is about to get a lot more difficult for Jesus 00:05:17.759 --> 00:05:22.060 because we all know what tends to happen on bad days. 00:05:22.159 --> 00:05:23.180 They tend to get worse. 00:05:23.420 --> 00:05:24.519 Unexpected things happen. 00:05:24.719 --> 00:05:25.740 Crises emerge. 00:05:25.860 --> 00:05:29.099 This always happens, it seems, when we're least prepared for it, doesn't it? 00:05:30.680 --> 00:05:33.519 And this is just what happens to Jesus in verse 22. 00:05:34.860 --> 00:05:35.620 Mark says, 00:05:35.620 --> 00:06:00.600 So there comes along a synagogue official named Jairus. 00:06:00.600 --> 00:06:04.180 Now, Jairus would have been an important man in his day, in his community, 00:06:04.300 --> 00:06:06.740 far more important than Jesus was at that time. 00:06:06.780 --> 00:06:07.760 But what does he do? 00:06:09.360 --> 00:06:10.860 Jairus humbles himself. 00:06:11.020 --> 00:06:14.260 He falls before Jesus right in front of the crowd. 00:06:14.320 --> 00:06:17.160 And he begs him to heal his daughter. 00:06:17.879 --> 00:06:22.500 This would have made a striking picture to see a man of this standing falling before Jesus. 00:06:23.080 --> 00:06:25.360 And notice what Jairus says. 00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:29.639 He calls his daughter, my little daughter. 00:06:31.000 --> 00:06:36.340 In the Greek, he uses what we would call the diminutive form of the word daughter. 00:06:36.500 --> 00:06:37.620 It's a term of endearment. 00:06:37.740 --> 00:06:39.160 It means that he loves her. 00:06:40.819 --> 00:06:42.720 Now, we're reading here from the Gospel of Mark. 00:06:43.040 --> 00:06:44.600 But Luke has the very same story. 00:06:44.660 --> 00:06:48.840 And he adds that this little daughter was also Jairus' only daughter. 00:06:48.839 --> 00:06:52.259 And we know from these two accounts, if we put them together, 00:06:53.579 --> 00:06:57.659 that Jairus' only daughter is at the point of death. 00:06:57.919 --> 00:06:59.519 And her father loves her. 00:07:00.139 --> 00:07:03.000 And we can assume that Jairus saw that she was dying. 00:07:03.139 --> 00:07:04.639 He heard that Jesus was about. 00:07:04.739 --> 00:07:06.079 And he must have said to himself, 00:07:06.279 --> 00:07:08.039 If only I can get to Jesus. 00:07:08.639 --> 00:07:11.059 And so, in faith, he left his daughter's side. 00:07:11.159 --> 00:07:13.419 He humbled himself publicly before Jesus. 00:07:14.319 --> 00:07:16.059 And he asked him to heal her. 00:07:16.060 --> 00:07:25.240 In difficult times, do you come to Jesus like Jairus did? 00:07:25.720 --> 00:07:28.600 Have you ever experienced a crisis? 00:07:28.959 --> 00:07:31.819 Have you ever been confronted by something awful? 00:07:32.680 --> 00:07:37.639 Have you been faced with a situation so terrible you knew no human power could help? 00:07:38.199 --> 00:07:42.399 And when confronted by these things, have you sought out our great healer, Jesus? 00:07:42.399 --> 00:07:48.079 Have you humbled yourself before him and asked him to heal and to rescue and to save? 00:07:50.539 --> 00:07:56.299 There are many people in our world and in our community right now who, in the midst of this pandemic, 00:07:56.479 --> 00:08:01.239 are facing situations exactly like Jairus faced right now. 00:08:01.979 --> 00:08:06.120 And Scripture teaches us that Jesus is the good doctor. 00:08:06.120 --> 00:08:09.939 And that if we come to him in humility like this man Jairus did, 00:08:10.420 --> 00:08:14.340 then his delight is to heal and to save. 00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:18.459 My friends, if you're suffering right now or if you have a loved one who is, 00:08:18.519 --> 00:08:23.660 I want you to follow the example of Jairus and go to Jesus in humbleness 00:08:23.660 --> 00:08:27.620 and call upon the one who is the healer of our souls. 00:08:27.860 --> 00:08:29.759 And he will come to your aid. 00:08:29.759 --> 00:08:33.679 And this is exactly what Jesus did in the next verse. 00:08:33.779 --> 00:08:35.580 In verse 24, we read simply, 00:08:36.600 --> 00:08:37.819 And he went with him. 00:08:38.600 --> 00:08:42.580 But something else goes with Jesus too, because verse 24 doesn't end there. 00:08:42.679 --> 00:08:43.939 Mark also adds these words, 00:08:44.080 --> 00:08:51.179 And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him. 00:08:51.179 --> 00:08:57.319 So Jesus is trying to get to that little girl and the crowd is jostling him. 00:08:57.419 --> 00:08:58.239 They're pressing him. 00:08:58.319 --> 00:08:59.259 They're thronging him. 00:08:59.339 --> 00:09:02.699 They're trying to get close to him, trying to see him, trying to touch him. 00:09:02.959 --> 00:09:05.059 We see this all throughout the Gospels. 00:09:05.359 --> 00:09:09.779 The crowds gather around Jesus and they press in on him and they get in the way of his ministry. 00:09:10.419 --> 00:09:13.299 The Gospels tell us that the crowds could be so bad sometimes 00:09:13.299 --> 00:09:16.240 that Jesus and his disciples could not even find time to eat. 00:09:17.379 --> 00:09:19.039 But here we have a bigger problem. 00:09:19.439 --> 00:09:20.500 There's an emergency. 00:09:21.179 --> 00:09:21.979 There's a crisis. 00:09:22.179 --> 00:09:25.799 This little girl is dying and the crowd is getting in Jesus' way. 00:09:27.299 --> 00:09:33.059 Do you sense the tension and the stress growing as this day goes on for Jesus? 00:09:34.319 --> 00:09:37.620 But things are about to ratchet up a bit more for Jesus. 00:09:37.779 --> 00:09:41.079 Mark tells us in the next three verses, 25 through 27, 00:09:41.419 --> 00:09:41.819 he says, 00:09:41.819 --> 00:09:46.000 There was a woman who had a discharge of blood for 12 years 00:09:46.000 --> 00:09:50.000 and who had suffered much under many physicians. 00:09:50.000 --> 00:09:56.220 And she had spent all that she had and was no better but rather grew worse. 00:09:56.379 --> 00:10:00.799 She heard the reports about Jesus and she came up behind him in the crowd 00:10:00.799 --> 00:10:02.820 and she touched his garment. 00:10:02.820 --> 00:10:05.920 Now, do you see what's happening here? 00:10:06.320 --> 00:10:08.860 She, just like the crowd, is pressing in on Jesus. 00:10:09.040 --> 00:10:10.740 Everyone's trying to get a piece of him. 00:10:11.040 --> 00:10:15.300 Here we have a woman who was constantly bleeding for 12 years 00:10:15.299 --> 00:10:17.519 and she wanted to be healed. 00:10:19.059 --> 00:10:23.099 And understandably, she came and she reached out to Jesus. 00:10:23.779 --> 00:10:26.359 But I want to know something. 00:10:26.360 --> 00:10:31.539 I want to know what she was thinking of getting in the way of Jesus 00:10:31.539 --> 00:10:34.419 at a time like this during an emergency. 00:10:35.659 --> 00:10:38.300 Well, Mark tells us in verse 28, he says, 00:10:39.440 --> 00:10:40.240 For the woman said, 00:10:40.460 --> 00:10:43.779 If I touch even his garments, I will be made well. 00:10:45.580 --> 00:10:48.639 And immediately the flow of blood dried up 00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:53.939 and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. 00:10:54.899 --> 00:10:57.480 Do you see the power of Jesus, my friends? 00:10:57.480 --> 00:11:00.759 Just by touching his garments, she's healed. 00:11:01.279 --> 00:11:03.939 This is the power of a wonderful Jesus. 00:11:05.120 --> 00:11:07.019 But I want to know something else. 00:11:07.019 --> 00:11:09.259 I want to know how Jesus will react 00:11:09.259 --> 00:11:11.740 to something that many of us might think 00:11:11.740 --> 00:11:14.240 is rude and presumptuous 00:11:14.240 --> 00:11:17.460 to just reach out and grab someone 00:11:17.460 --> 00:11:18.840 without their permission. 00:11:19.399 --> 00:11:20.699 Mark says in verse 30, 00:11:21.139 --> 00:11:23.360 And Jesus, perceiving in himself 00:11:23.360 --> 00:11:24.899 that power had gone out from him, 00:11:24.980 --> 00:11:26.939 immediately turned about in the crowd. 00:11:27.460 --> 00:11:28.199 And he said, 00:11:28.259 --> 00:11:30.139 Who touched my garments? 00:11:31.259 --> 00:11:34.899 Now imagine this scene in your mind's eye. 00:11:34.899 --> 00:11:37.959 Jesus is going to heal this dying little girl. 00:11:38.059 --> 00:11:39.000 There's not much time. 00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:40.340 He's fighting through a crowd 00:11:40.340 --> 00:11:41.600 who's thronging around him. 00:11:41.959 --> 00:11:44.199 This poor woman who suffered so much 00:11:44.199 --> 00:11:46.639 and is in poverty pushes her way through. 00:11:46.799 --> 00:11:48.100 She reaches, she stretches, 00:11:48.340 --> 00:11:49.899 she touches Jesus' garment, 00:11:50.459 --> 00:11:51.299 and she's healed. 00:11:51.740 --> 00:11:54.679 But straight away, Jesus turns around 00:11:54.679 --> 00:11:55.899 and he says, 00:11:55.980 --> 00:11:58.039 Who touched my garments? 00:11:58.819 --> 00:12:00.899 And listen to verse 31, the next verse. 00:12:01.019 --> 00:12:02.779 Listen to how the disciples react to this. 00:12:02.779 --> 00:12:04.240 His disciples say to him, 00:12:04.240 --> 00:12:06.759 you see the crowd pressing around you 00:12:06.759 --> 00:12:07.659 and yet you say, 00:12:07.860 --> 00:12:09.180 Who touched me? 00:12:11.639 --> 00:12:13.180 You know what's happening here. 00:12:13.360 --> 00:12:15.820 The disciples are questioning Jesus 00:12:15.820 --> 00:12:17.720 once again, 00:12:18.500 --> 00:12:20.120 just like they did in the boat 00:12:20.120 --> 00:12:21.340 the previous night. 00:12:22.320 --> 00:12:23.460 They think that Jesus 00:12:23.460 --> 00:12:25.840 is not making any sense. 00:12:25.960 --> 00:12:26.720 They think, in fact, 00:12:26.779 --> 00:12:28.019 what most of us would be thinking 00:12:28.019 --> 00:12:29.000 in this situation, 00:12:29.500 --> 00:12:30.320 they would be thinking, 00:12:30.320 --> 00:12:32.600 What do you mean who touched me, Jesus? 00:12:32.600 --> 00:12:35.320 You see the crowd pressing around you. 00:12:35.399 --> 00:12:36.519 Everyone is touching you. 00:12:36.820 --> 00:12:38.680 And why are you wasting time? 00:12:38.759 --> 00:12:41.300 This little girl is at the brink of death. 00:12:43.700 --> 00:12:45.960 The disciples are doubting Jesus. 00:12:46.220 --> 00:12:47.200 Only this time, 00:12:47.920 --> 00:12:49.600 they're doubting him publicly. 00:12:50.620 --> 00:12:53.399 But look what happens in verse 32 and 33. 00:12:53.600 --> 00:12:55.960 And Jesus looked around to see who had done it. 00:12:55.960 --> 00:12:56.920 But the woman, 00:12:56.920 --> 00:12:58.240 knowing what had happened to her, 00:12:58.379 --> 00:13:00.340 came in fear and trembling 00:13:00.340 --> 00:13:03.180 and fell down before him 00:13:03.180 --> 00:13:05.840 and told him the whole truth. 00:13:09.480 --> 00:13:11.320 Why is this woman so scared? 00:13:11.700 --> 00:13:12.720 Why is she fearful? 00:13:13.080 --> 00:13:14.100 Why is she trembling? 00:13:14.259 --> 00:13:15.500 Why is she falling down 00:13:15.500 --> 00:13:19.560 in fear before the man who just healed her? 00:13:19.559 --> 00:13:22.279 For one thing, 00:13:22.359 --> 00:13:23.239 she may be afraid 00:13:23.239 --> 00:13:24.279 because, like I said, 00:13:24.339 --> 00:13:26.099 it's a bit rude to just grab someone. 00:13:26.259 --> 00:13:27.379 She might be afraid also 00:13:27.379 --> 00:13:29.179 because she knows she's holding Jesus up 00:13:29.179 --> 00:13:30.159 from an urgent task. 00:13:30.459 --> 00:13:32.179 But there's another reason why, 00:13:33.679 --> 00:13:35.479 according to the Old Testament law, 00:13:36.799 --> 00:13:39.099 she was not supposed to be touching Jesus. 00:13:40.379 --> 00:13:42.279 The Old Testament law stipulated 00:13:42.279 --> 00:13:43.659 in no uncertain terms 00:13:43.659 --> 00:13:47.000 that anyone who had any kind of bodily discharge, 00:13:47.000 --> 00:13:48.360 like a flow of blood, 00:13:48.759 --> 00:13:51.240 was considered to be unclean. 00:13:52.299 --> 00:13:54.919 And so this woman was ceremonially unclean. 00:13:55.419 --> 00:13:58.860 And Leviticus 15, 25 through 27, 00:13:59.019 --> 00:14:00.240 specifically states 00:14:00.240 --> 00:14:02.539 that if someone is unclean 00:14:02.539 --> 00:14:04.659 and they touch another person 00:14:04.659 --> 00:14:06.019 or they touch another garment, 00:14:06.200 --> 00:14:07.879 then that person or that garment 00:14:07.879 --> 00:14:10.360 becomes unclean also. 00:14:11.840 --> 00:14:13.820 And so by touching Jesus' garments, 00:14:13.980 --> 00:14:15.860 this woman has just made him 00:14:15.860 --> 00:14:18.700 or at least his garments unclean. 00:14:21.139 --> 00:14:22.419 That's why she's afraid 00:14:22.419 --> 00:14:23.940 and why she's trembling. 00:14:24.120 --> 00:14:25.500 She knows she wasn't supposed 00:14:25.500 --> 00:14:26.620 to be touching Jesus. 00:14:26.800 --> 00:14:28.519 She knows she made him unclean. 00:14:28.879 --> 00:14:30.419 And by telling Jesus what happened, 00:14:30.500 --> 00:14:31.519 she's also telling him 00:14:31.519 --> 00:14:33.600 that she has presumptuously 00:14:33.600 --> 00:14:34.560 made him unclean 00:14:34.560 --> 00:14:35.560 without his permission. 00:14:37.620 --> 00:14:39.980 But what does Jesus say? 00:14:41.039 --> 00:14:42.259 How will he respond? 00:14:42.259 --> 00:14:44.139 In verse 34, 00:14:44.580 --> 00:14:45.500 he says to her, 00:14:46.539 --> 00:14:47.799 daughter, 00:14:48.480 --> 00:14:52.059 your faith has made you well. 00:14:53.179 --> 00:14:54.860 Go in peace 00:14:54.860 --> 00:14:58.100 and be healed of your disease. 00:14:58.100 --> 00:15:04.060 When someone makes you unclean, 00:15:04.779 --> 00:15:06.720 do you react in this way? 00:15:07.659 --> 00:15:09.159 When you are slighted 00:15:09.159 --> 00:15:10.259 or taken advantage of 00:15:10.259 --> 00:15:11.480 by a desperate person, 00:15:11.620 --> 00:15:13.580 do you respond with love 00:15:13.580 --> 00:15:16.519 like how Jesus does? 00:15:16.519 --> 00:15:19.939 Close your eyes for a moment. 00:15:20.159 --> 00:15:21.019 Do you see Jesus 00:15:21.019 --> 00:15:22.460 in this gospel story? 00:15:23.039 --> 00:15:25.059 He is in an ocean of chaos. 00:15:25.199 --> 00:15:26.759 The crowd is pressing in on him. 00:15:26.799 --> 00:15:28.000 His disciples are publicly 00:15:28.000 --> 00:15:28.840 questioning him. 00:15:29.179 --> 00:15:30.840 And this woman gets in his way 00:15:30.840 --> 00:15:33.679 and makes him ritualistically impure 00:15:33.679 --> 00:15:34.720 all while he's trying 00:15:34.720 --> 00:15:36.659 to reach a dying girl. 00:15:37.659 --> 00:15:39.259 But what does Jesus see? 00:15:40.159 --> 00:15:42.100 Jesus looks past all these things 00:15:42.100 --> 00:15:43.319 and instead he sees 00:15:43.319 --> 00:15:44.759 a desperate woman. 00:15:44.759 --> 00:15:45.700 He sees a woman 00:15:45.700 --> 00:15:47.860 who may not have been touched 00:15:47.860 --> 00:15:50.379 by another person in years. 00:15:51.659 --> 00:15:52.659 He sees a woman 00:15:52.659 --> 00:15:53.639 who had suffered much 00:15:53.639 --> 00:15:54.659 at the hands of many
