WEBVTT 00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:08.800 Today's sermon text is Jeremiah 31, starting at verse 29. 00:00:11.080 --> 00:00:17.839 As a point of reference, many of you are familiar with the story of Daniel and the Hebrews who were carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon. 00:00:19.019 --> 00:00:25.960 When they were growing up and still living in Jerusalem, they would have heard the warnings that God gave to national Israel through the prophet Jeremiah. 00:00:25.960 --> 00:00:31.179 But most in Israel would have rejected Jeremiah. They considered him a madman. 00:00:32.160 --> 00:00:35.359 And he was bringing only bad news that their kings did not want to hear. 00:00:36.340 --> 00:00:42.640 Because Israel did not repent, national Israel suffered the consequences of breaking God's law. 00:00:43.120 --> 00:00:45.040 And they were carried off into exile in Babylon. 00:00:46.079 --> 00:00:51.900 In this ministry, Jeremiah was thrown into a muddy pit and left for dead. 00:00:51.899 --> 00:00:56.739 He was rejected by his own people, being a prophet of God. 00:00:57.640 --> 00:01:06.819 Some have said that Jeremiah suffered more at the hands of the rulers of Israel and Jerusalem than any other prophet, except for the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:08.719 --> 00:01:18.780 So this word in this heavy, dark book of Jeremiah brings us some of the most glorious promises of God's enduring covenant faithfulness. 00:01:18.780 --> 00:01:27.480 How even though these people are so rebellious and they're trying to kill even the messenger, Jeremiah, that God will bring a new covenant. 00:01:28.019 --> 00:01:30.120 He will be faithful to his people. 00:01:30.840 --> 00:01:35.340 And let's hear this promise from Jeremiah 31, beginning at verse 29. 00:01:35.859 --> 00:01:40.700 This is God's inspired, inerrant, infallible, clear and sufficient word. 00:01:41.120 --> 00:01:43.939 I'll say this is the word of the Lord. me out of his family? 00:07:36.160 --> 00:07:45.160 Well, my message for you today is about the new covenant that Jesus says he cut in his own blood. 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:49.800 And the question I want to walk through is how new is the new covenant? 00:07:50.220 --> 00:07:51.620 That's the title of today's sermon. 00:07:51.980 --> 00:07:53.160 How new is the new covenant? 00:07:53.160 --> 00:07:57.540 This is part one of two. 00:07:57.900 --> 00:08:01.400 So next week we'll be approaching this new covenant from the New Testament. 00:08:01.400 --> 00:08:06.020 But we want to understand what God had promised leading up to the finished work of Christ. 00:08:06.700 --> 00:08:11.100 And so the prophecy of the new covenant, it comes in the old covenant in many places, 00:08:11.100 --> 00:08:14.060 but nowhere more clearly than in Jeremiah 31. 00:08:14.260 --> 00:08:15.840 What we just read is our sermon text. 00:08:16.620 --> 00:08:19.660 To the people of God is promised a new covenant. 00:08:19.660 --> 00:08:27.880 And I want to see now, what does God say to the people of Israel in Jeremiah 31 about this new covenant 00:08:27.880 --> 00:08:30.960 that should set their expectation for how new it will be? 00:08:32.840 --> 00:08:40.540 The first observation in verse 29 is that the children of believers will stand on their own in the new covenant. 00:08:41.700 --> 00:08:45.240 In the new covenant, the children of believers will stand on their own. 00:08:46.460 --> 00:08:49.279 Let's understand this first in the context of Israel. 00:08:49.659 --> 00:08:54.799 Israel as a nation was in a covenant with God, but it was a covenant based on works. 00:08:55.639 --> 00:08:57.620 Moses gave the law from Sinai. 00:08:57.779 --> 00:09:02.679 And if national Israel, a sufficient number in national Israel, obeyed God's law, 00:09:02.959 --> 00:09:05.600 the whole nation would enjoy blessings in the land. 00:09:07.120 --> 00:09:13.539 The iniquities of the fathers was upon the children in this covenant of works, 00:09:13.539 --> 00:09:15.699 but also were the blessings. 00:09:15.700 --> 00:09:19.640 In other words, if your parents were part of a generation that feared God, 00:09:20.000 --> 00:09:23.840 the next generation could be very spoiled, take it for granted, 00:09:23.840 --> 00:09:26.040 and still get to enjoy living in the land. 00:09:26.300 --> 00:09:28.440 And that was the pattern for national Israel. 00:09:30.720 --> 00:09:32.460 In verse 29, we're told, 00:09:32.460 --> 00:09:37.080 In those days, referring to a future day that will come, 00:09:38.519 --> 00:09:41.080 the fathers have eaten sour grapes, 00:09:41.600 --> 00:09:45.259 but now the principle is going to change. 00:09:46.100 --> 00:09:49.000 In the old covenant, when the parents sin, 00:09:49.440 --> 00:09:51.440 the children's teeth get set on edge. 00:09:51.440 --> 00:09:52.980 But in the new, he says, 00:09:53.080 --> 00:09:54.500 In those days, in verse 30, 00:09:54.640 --> 00:09:56.900 Everyone shall die for his own iniquity. 00:09:57.540 --> 00:09:59.120 Every man who eats sour grapes, 00:09:59.520 --> 00:10:01.580 his teeth shall be set on edge. 00:10:01.860 --> 00:10:05.860 So he's creating a distinction relating to the children of believers. 00:10:06.980 --> 00:10:10.700 He's using some Hebrew prophetic idioms here that we need to explain 00:10:10.700 --> 00:10:12.320 to even be able to interpret this correctly. 00:10:12.480 --> 00:10:14.740 What does it mean for your tooth to be set on edge 00:10:14.740 --> 00:10:16.420 or to eat a sour grape? 00:10:16.419 --> 00:10:23.199 A sour grape refers to the vineyard of God 00:10:23.199 --> 00:10:26.939 and the vineyard being the people of God 00:10:26.939 --> 00:10:30.539 not bearing the fruit that is pleasing to the owner of the vineyard. 00:10:31.379 --> 00:10:36.639 To eat a sour grape is to take something that is displeasing to God 00:10:36.639 --> 00:10:40.679 and receive it for yourself, 00:10:40.839 --> 00:10:43.459 grab it for yourself as a sweet morsel. 00:10:43.460 --> 00:10:47.120 It's to see a grape that you know is not pleasing to God 00:10:47.120 --> 00:10:48.320 because it's always committing treason 00:11:06.560 --> 00:11:08.280 against the owner of the vineyard. 00:11:08.279 --> 00:11:12.679 What does it mean for your teeth to be set on edge? 00:11:14.500 --> 00:11:16.360 I had to do a little study on this one. 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:18.620 So think of your tooth like this. 00:11:18.639 --> 00:11:20.319 If you put your hand out like this 00:11:20.319 --> 00:11:21.699 and you've got the top of your arm 00:11:21.699 --> 00:11:24.059 with your fingers being your tooth like this, 00:11:24.100 --> 00:11:25.839 if you hit the top of your arm, 00:11:25.919 --> 00:11:26.939 it's a sharp edge. 00:11:27.399 --> 00:11:28.959 But if your tooth were set on edge 00:11:28.959 --> 00:11:30.480 and you try to cut something, 00:11:30.539 --> 00:11:31.079 it won't cut. 00:11:31.159 --> 00:11:31.559 It's blunt. 00:11:31.559 --> 00:11:34.259 So for your teeth to be set on edge, 00:11:35.059 --> 00:11:38.579 it means that your teeth are worn down. 00:11:39.339 --> 00:11:43.419 It's the dull side of the tooth that's blunt. 00:11:44.879 --> 00:11:47.979 It means that you have been gnashing your teeth so much 00:11:47.979 --> 00:11:50.359 that your teeth are now flat. 00:11:50.360 --> 00:11:55.340 So he says in the Old Covenant, 00:11:56.060 --> 00:11:57.060 the parents' sin 00:11:57.060 --> 00:12:01.560 and the children's teeth are set on edge. 00:12:02.539 --> 00:12:05.340 The sins of the parents in national Israel 00:12:05.340 --> 00:12:06.779 are going to bring curses 00:12:06.779 --> 00:12:09.340 and a miserable life for the children. 00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:12.000 So the generation in Israel 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:13.960 that won't listen to the prophet Jeremiah 00:12:13.960 --> 00:12:16.159 is bringing curses on the next 00:13:44.340 --> 00:13:45.620 whether you're in the land 00:13:45.620 --> 00:13:47.020 or you're in exile like Daniel, 00:13:48.020 --> 00:13:51.820 or whether your parents are pagans or believers. 00:13:51.820 --> 00:13:55.700 You must believe in Jesus Christ, 00:13:56.340 --> 00:13:58.600 your God and Savior personally. 00:14:00.040 --> 00:14:01.500 That's the first observation. 00:14:01.740 you shall be circumcised, 00:15:29.200 --> 00:15:30.659 the sign of my covenant. 00:15:30.659 --> 00:15:36.579 So the fact that you are related to Abraham by blood 00:15:36.579 --> 00:15:39.399 means that you're going to receive the sign of the covenant. 00:15:39.939 --> 00:15:44.219 It had nothing to do in the person receiving the sign, 00:15:44.559 --> 00:15:46.419 nothing in them in the old salvation, 00:17:00.979 --> 00:17:03.019 for everyone who believes, 00:17:03.479 --> 00:17:04.779 for the Jew first, 00:17:05.359 --> 00:17:07.159 and also for the Greek. 00:17:07.160 --> 00:17:09.580 So God is true to his word. 00:17:09.580 --> 00:17:12.560 This new covenant is given to Israel first, 00:17:12.560 --> 00:17:15.480 and all who are appointed to eternal life in Israel 00:17:15.480 -->
