encouraged to read many books. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:20.720 And I did read many Christian books. 00:05:21.340 --> 00:05:27.680 And this was one of those books that is different to other books. She learned to write shorthand very quick. 00:08:29.300 --> 00:08:34.379 But nowadays we don't need that anymore because of the recording and typing. 00:08:34.379 --> 00:08:46.939 But because she was a shorthand writer, she was able to record everything that Oslo Chamber was teaching and preaching. 00:08:47.960 --> 00:08:51.600 And then there's how all these 40 books came about after his death. 00:08:52.019 --> 00:08:53.399 And this is amazing. 00:08:53.399 --> 00:08:59.179 Both of these couples, their whole focus in life is to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:08:59.720 --> 00:09:04.679 And they seem to live to a different world than many other people. 00:09:04.679 --> 00:09:18.839 But if you read his books, I think our imagination will stir to seek this, to live like them, to live for something or someone that is greater. 00:09:18.840 --> 00:09:26.379 I hope that Psalms 20 and 21 will also help us to see the same. 00:09:27.259 --> 00:09:36.879 When we read these two Psalms, we should bear in mind that those people, their whole focus is on their king or the Psalms on the king. 00:09:36.879 --> 00:09:42.200 And Psalm 20 is more a petition for the king. 00:09:42.700 --> 00:09:49.120 And Psalm 21 is more a thanksgiving Psalm for what God has done for the king. 00:09:49.919 --> 00:09:56.600 Now the problem I suppose we also have would be saying, would these Psalms be written by David, King David himself? 00:09:58.480 --> 00:10:05.320 So if it's written by King David, would it be sort of self-promoting writing about him? 00:10:05.320 --> 00:10:10.900 It could be written by King David himself or it could be written by someone else for King David. 00:10:11.860 --> 00:10:18.480 Either way, I don't think it is, even if it's written by King David, I don't think it is self-promoting. 00:10:18.640 --> 00:10:23.320 Because King David's focus is on the office of his kingship. 00:10:24.180 --> 00:10:29.480 Not about himself, but about the king of God's people. 00:10:29.480 --> 00:10:38.639 And we know that the Psalms ultimately fulfilled in King David's greatest son, the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:10:39.460 --> 00:10:45.500 And so whether it's written by King David or not, I don't think it's a big problem. 00:10:46.639 --> 00:10:57.800 It's a focus on the kingship and also on the greater king that is to come, that is to fulfill the Psalms. 00:10:57.799 --> 00:11:07.159 So I will go through some part of the Psalms just so that we can help us to appreciate it. 00:11:07.500 --> 00:11:11.120 But I won't be able to cover the whole two Psalms. 00:11:12.299 --> 00:11:24.019 So the first part is to see what people pray for the king and how there is answer in Psalm 21. 00:11:24.019 --> 00:11:29.399 So Psalm 20 verse 1, may the Lord answer you in the day of trouble. 00:11:30.639 --> 00:11:39.220 And Psalm 21 verse 1, O Lord, in your strength the king rejoices and in your salvation how greatly he exalts. 00:11:39.220 --> 00:11:52.680 So from this prayer in Psalm 20, we know that for those people who pray for their king, 00:11:53.320 --> 00:11:59.560 is that they ask God to protect the king in the day of trouble. 00:11:59.559 --> 00:12:07.679 Do you see that they did not ask God to protect us in the day of trouble? 00:12:08.159 --> 00:12:09.319 They said protect the king. 00:12:10.319 --> 00:12:12.579 We can think why that is the case. 00:12:13.319 --> 00:12:15.799 Because these people, their focus is on the king. 00:12:15.899 --> 00:12:20.059 They know that if the king stands, then they will stand. 00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:23.339 If the king falls, then they will fall. 00:12:23.340 --> 00:12:28.660 And so they pray for the king to be protected. 00:12:30.160 --> 00:12:32.980 And did God protect King David? 00:12:33.240 --> 00:12:40.360 We could see from history that King David was a very successful military king. 00:12:41.060 --> 00:12:46.899 And through him, Israel became a very strong nation, the superpower of that time. 00:12:46.899 --> 00:12:53.840 However, King David before, after he yielded to temptation, 00:12:54.399 --> 00:12:57.139 and he committed adultery and murder. 00:12:58.299 --> 00:13:03.120 So the nation of Israel likewise fell apart a generation later. 00:13:06.279 --> 00:13:10.259 When we apply that to the Lord Jesus Christ, we know that he stood firm 00:13:10.259 --> 00:13:13.819 in the face of temptation and opposition. 00:13:13.820 --> 00:13:23.500 In fact, Jesus was led by the Spirit to be tempted in the wilderness for 40 days and 40 nights. 00:13:25.480 --> 00:13:27.460 And he did not yield to temptation. 00:13:29.340 --> 00:13:39.620 But then, did God protect Jesus, the Lord Jesus, from the pain or suffering or opposition? 00:13:39.620 --> 00:13:47.700 We read in the Garden of Testimony that he was praying God would take away the cup, 00:13:47.960 --> 00:13:49.519 this bitter cup from him. 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:57.299 But he said that it is still like he wants to do God's will in this. 00:13:58.179 --> 00:14:03.360 And so Jesus went through the horror of the cross. 00:14:03.360 --> 00:14:07.879 But because the Lord Jesus endured the suffering of the cross, 00:14:08.180 --> 00:14:10.720 we can now stand before God as forgiven sinners. 00:14:11.539 --> 00:14:17.440 So, in a way, God answered the prayer of the people. 00:14:18.259 --> 00:14:20.960 The people's prayer is that the king to be protected, 00:14:21.539 --> 00:14:23.800 so that they themselves will be protected. 00:14:23.799 --> 00:14:28.339 But the king Jesus actually went through the suffering, 00:14:29.599 --> 00:14:34.399 so that we ultimately can be protected from God's wrath. 00:14:35.419 --> 00:14:39.099 So that is the first prayer. 00:14:39.620 --> 00:14:46.319 The second one is about the king's offering be accepted. 00:14:46.879 --> 00:14:48.559 In Psalm 20, verse 3, 00:14:48.559 --> 00:14:59.099 And Psalm 21, verse 4, 00:14:59.099 --> 00:15:04.079 He asked life of you, you gave it to him, length of days, forever and ever. 00:15:05.839 --> 00:15:12.000 So the people of God also understood that the king represented them in offering burnt sacrifices. 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:19.919 They could only approach God if the king's offering for remission of sin was acceptable to God. 00:15:21.399 --> 00:15:28.539 They did not presume that God would listen to their petitions if their sins had not been atoned for. 00:15:29.620 --> 00:15:35.820 So God's acceptance of the offering was reflected in the king's long life. 00:15:38.240 --> 00:15:41.539 King David offered up sacrifices year after year. 00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:48.580 But King Jesus offered himself as the perfect sacrifice once and for all. 00:15:50.299 --> 00:15:51.460 King David died. 00:15:52.500 --> 00:15:57.159 King Jesus was resurrected and lived forever and ever. 00:15:57.539 --> 00:16:01.299 And so the Psalms ultimately fulfilled in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:16:01.299 --> 00:16:06.000 Because he is the only one who can offer the perfect sacrifice. 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:14.340 The third thing they were praying for is that the king's plan be fulfilled. 00:16:14.919 --> 00:16:16.259 Psalm 20, verse 4, 00:16:16.580 --> 00:16:20.019 May he grant you your heart's desire and fulfill all your plans. 00:16:21.679 --> 00:16:23.399 And Psalm 21, verse 2, 00:16:23.799 --> 00:16:28.059 You have given him his heart's desire and have not withheld the request of his lips. 00:16:28.059 --> 00:16:34.639 So they pray that God might fulfill the king's plan. 00:16:35.319 --> 00:16:38.859 And this was in a way a dangerous request. 00:16:39.479 --> 00:16:43.199 As a fulfillment of the king's plan may be in conflict with their own plans. 00:16:44.199 --> 00:16:50.899 Like in a war, the king would need to get people to fight as soldiers. 00:16:50.899 --> 00:16:54.480 And so to fulfill the king's plan, 00:16:54.480 --> 00:17:00.379 those people would need to be part of the soldiers. 00:17:00.819 they basically trusted the king to do the best for the nation. 00:17:17.759 --> 00:17:25.180 Not so much necessarily according to their own will or their own desire, 00:17:25.680 --> 00:17:29.480 but they just want the king's plan to be fulfilled. 00:17:29.960 --> 00:17:33.579 And they are ready to submit their own plans to the king's plan. 00:17:35.240 --> 00:17:39.279 While many of King David's plans were fulfilled, 00:17:39.660 --> 00:17:45.920 one thing he really wanted to achieve was to build a temple for God. 00:17:45.920 --> 00:17:56.620 But he didn't get that done because God said that it wasn't King David who would build this temple. 00:17:58.100 --> 00:18:01.060 And his descendant is going to build this temple, 00:18:01.300 --> 00:18:06.300 and King Jesus is the only king who would perfectly build this temple. 00:18:06.800 --> 00:18:11.400 Jesus said, I mean, King David's son Solomon did build a temple. 00:18:11.400 --> 00:18:16.080 But Jesus said, destroy this temple, and I will raise it up again in three days. 00:18:17.720 --> 00:18:20.960 So the temple that was built by King Solomon was not, 00:18:22.100 --> 00:18:25.040 it wasn't the real or the actual temple. 00:18:25.280 --> 00:18:26.940 It was only a picture of what is to come. 00:18:27.720 --> 00:18:34.140 Because the temple is where the people can meet with God. 00:18:34.140 --> 00:18:43.180 And only the Lord Jesus Christ would be the place or the person whom we can meet God. 00:18:43.620 --> 00:18:47.540 And so Jesus is the one who built the perfect temple. 00:18:48.280 --> 00:18:51.600 And this is the ultimate fulfillment of the king's plan. 00:18:52.520 --> 00:18:56.100 So King Jesus' plan is to be the temple, 00:18:57.500 --> 00:19:01.720 to be the meeting place between God and man.
