Sunday we considered how we crave to be loved unconditionally, and yet practically we 00:05:04.959 --> 00:05:08.359 reduce most of our relationships to being transactional. 00:05:08.620 --> 00:05:14.599 That is, I will only do what you want if I can be sure that you will do what I want in 00:05:14.599 --> 00:05:15.079 response. 00:05:15.919 --> 00:05:17.899 We spent a little bit of time talking about that. 00:05:17.899 --> 00:05:21.519 At the elders meeting Tuesday night, when we reviewed the sermon as we normally do, 00:05:22.479 --> 00:05:27.500 we asked the question, why do we become transactional? 00:05:30.879 --> 00:05:34.479 And there's possible, I've got three possible answers, and there's probably heaps more, 00:05:34.560 --> 00:05:39.339 but three I've thought about this week is that sometimes it's just because we're so self-centered 00:05:39.339 --> 00:05:40.279 in relationships. 00:05:42.479 --> 00:05:45.879 By definition, a relationship involves two or more parties. 00:05:45.879 --> 00:05:52.379 Each of those parties, by definition, would also be craving unconditional love and acceptance. 00:05:52.939 --> 00:05:58.800 But in practice, we just make the relationship so often about ourselves. 00:05:59.899 --> 00:06:00.579 Me, me, me. 00:06:00.579 --> 00:06:10.479 That means, I think, that we only give the other party what we think is necessary to get back 00:06:10.479 --> 00:06:11.399 from them what we want. 00:06:13.599 --> 00:06:15.879 It's pretty pervasive, I think, in most relationships. 00:06:16.599 --> 00:06:18.159 And sometimes it's just defensiveness. 00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:23.460 I think it's because we know ourselves so well. 00:06:23.540 --> 00:06:24.660 We know our brokenness. 00:06:24.760 --> 00:06:26.580 We know our failings so well. 00:06:27.580 --> 00:06:34.580 And from there, we fear that as other people get to know us, then they'll actually decide 00:06:34.580 --> 00:06:38.060 we're too unlovely to love unconditionally. 00:06:38.060 --> 00:06:46.899 And so then I think what we do then is often we resort to selective engagement, selective commitment 00:06:46.899 --> 00:06:47.879 to the relationship. 00:06:48.519 --> 00:06:53.560 And that selective engagement is commitment is designed to sort of manipulate or make the 00:06:53.560 --> 00:06:59.120 other party love us despite our unloveliness. 00:06:59.120 --> 00:07:08.220 And sometimes then I think it's just not liking being indebted to someone else. 00:07:09.040 --> 00:07:11.120 We don't like indebtedness to others. 00:07:13.220 --> 00:07:18.660 I actually think we're scared of the unconditional love and acceptance we crave. 00:07:20.280 --> 00:07:22.319 Now, that sounds a bit contradictory, doesn't it? 00:07:22.759 --> 00:07:25.019 But when you think about it, it's quite scary. 00:07:25.019 --> 00:07:32.019 Because if somebody loves me unconditionally, despite my unloveliness, then I owe them heaps. 00:07:32.779 --> 00:07:39.579 I owe them everything in response. 00:07:41.060 --> 00:07:46.519 Now, in that situation, I think we bring down the level of expectation and the level of responsibility 00:07:46.519 --> 00:07:47.759 by being transactional. 00:07:48.099 --> 00:07:53.539 That is, if I think I can contribute or have contributed at least in kind to the relationship, 00:07:53.540 --> 00:07:58.620 either equally or substantially, then that lessens my sense of indebtedness. 00:08:03.360 --> 00:08:08.280 No doubt there are other reasons, but each of those show the issue that was raised in chapter 00:08:08.280 --> 00:08:12.040 eight yesterday, last week, and flows through into chapter nine of Hebrews. 00:08:12.420 --> 00:08:15.480 That is, each of those things show the heart of the problem in relationships. deserve. 00:09:08.399 --> 00:09:16.779 Now, again, I want to connect from there into Hebrews, which is all about the clean or holy God 00:09:16.779 --> 00:09:25.600 making a covenant promise to love unconditionally and accept his dirty or sinful people. 00:09:25.600 --> 00:09:26.720 That's the contrast. 00:09:27.139 --> 00:09:29.500 That's the gulf that has to be bridged. 00:09:29.879 --> And that's been God's covenant promise from the very start. 00:09:42.940 --> 00:09:49.040 And it's been backed with his gracious provision of the Old Testament institutions or infrastructure. connect with and relate to unconditionally 00:10:05.340 --> 00:10:07.639 his dirty, rebellious people. 00:10:07.639 --> 00:10:19.279 But in response, we saw last week, his rebellious people constantly misunderstood and abused God's provision 00:10:19.279 --> 00:10:26.299 as they settled into legalistic or transactional patterns of doing religious things they believed would keep God happy 00:10:26.299 --> 00:10:30.860 and bring them the blessings they wanted without actually loving God for himself. 00:10:30.860 --> 00:10:40.259 The heart of the problem is the problem of the heart. 00:10:42.480 --> 00:10:50.960 And Hebrews tells us over and over and over again that the old system was ineffective to deliver what was most needed. 00:10:50.960 --> 00:10:54.040 A total change of heart. 00:10:54.840 --> 00:10:57.019 New desires, new attitudes, new thinking. 00:10:57.780 --> 00:11:00.240 And which overflows then into new actions. 00:11:01.400 --> 00:11:04.820 New wholehearted Testament, old covenant. 00:11:19.919 --> 00:11:26.759 The Hebrews is built around the New Testament or covenant delivered through the person and work of Jesus. 00:11:27.479 --> 00:11:30.519 We saw in chapter 2 that he is God's trailblazer. 00:11:30.919 --> 00:11:32.459 He is our champion of salvation. 00:11:32.919 --> 00:11:36.759 He delivers the perfection of relationship that only God, 00:11:38.319 --> 00:11:41.519 sorry, that all the Old Testament pointed to 00:11:41.519 --> 00:11:46.179 and which God will only be satisfied with. 00:11:48.279 --> 00:11:49.360 Jesus delivers it. 00:11:49.919 --> 00:11:58.419 Chapter 7 through 10 explores how everything Jesus is and has done 00:11:58.419 --> 00:12:03.219 is the reality and perfection that the Old points to and actually demands. 00:12:03.220 --> 00:12:11.220 And chapter 9, what we're looking at this morning, explores how the priestly or mediatorial role of Jesus. 00:12:11.300 --> 00:12:12.360 Remember, that's what a priest is. 00:12:12.660 --> 00:12:15.019 His job was to bring two parties together. 00:12:15.180 --> 00:12:15.920 He was a mediator. 00:12:17.019 --> 00:12:18.500 A clean, holy God 00:12:18.500 --> 00:12:21.100 and dirty, sinful people. 00:12:21.100 --> 00:12:28.100 And chapter 9 explores how the mediatorial role of Jesus brings God, 00:12:28.100 --> 00:12:32.800 dirty, sinful people into perfect relationship with a clean or holy God. 00:12:32.799 --> 00:12:41.559 And does so in such a new and better way that the pathway that God's people have used for centuries 00:12:41.559 --> 00:12:44.079 is now declared to be obsolete. 00:12:44.080 --> 00:12:47.879 So into chapter 9 then. 00:12:47.879 --> 00:12:50.580 And I tell you, Dave said at the start that I was a needy person.
