our passage is Genesis 11 verse 27, and we'll go through chapter 12 verse 9, and we will stand in just a moment. 00:00:47.799 --> 00:00:53.760 But keep your seats for now because I want to jog your memory a little bit of where we've been so far. 00:00:53.759 --> 00:01:04.239 You may remember that the book of Genesis is structured around 10 sections, and we've kind of planned our breaks and our book of Genesis, that's a pretty good indicator that the narrator is shifting you to a new section of the book. 00:01:17.799 --> 00:01:24.359 And so we've seen the generations of the heavens and the earth in chapter 1 as God created all things. 00:01:25.060 --> 00:01:32.939 We saw the generations of Noah, the righteous man, as God flooded all the earth, one righteous man, Noah. 00:01:33.620 --> 00:01:38.719 And we saw briefly the generations of the sons of Noah with Shem and Ham and Japheth. 00:01:38.719 --> 00:01:42.780 And then specifically we focused in on the generations of Shem in chapter 11. 00:01:42.939 --> 00:01:47.120 And now we're coming to the generations of Terah. 00:01:48.019 --> 00:01:58.560 And from the end of chapter 11 all the way through about chapter 25, Genesis zooms in on one of Terah's children, Abraham. 00:01:59.659 --> 00:02:02.640 And it's pretty staggering when you think about the scope of the book of Genesis, 00:02:02.640 --> 00:02:08.240 how it begins this universal, broad perspective of all the earth. 00:02:08.439 --> 00:02:14.659 But very quickly now we are zoomed in on one family, one line. 00:02:15.159 --> 00:02:19.620 And really we're focusing in, we're following, we're tracing one promise. 00:02:20.800 --> 00:02:27.159 Remember God made this promise to Adam and Eve in Genesis 3.15 that he will send a snake crusher, 00:02:27.879 --> 00:02:30.939 the seed of the woman who will crush the head of the serpent. 00:02:30.939 --> 00:02:38.500 And this morning that promise gets clarified that we see he will be one of Abram's offspring. 00:02:39.060 --> 00:02:44.859 So, and now that we're all caught up, let's stand, if you're able, in honor of the reading of God's word. 00:02:44.979 --> 00:02:51.139 And I'll read from Genesis chapter 11 verse 27 through chapter 12 verse 9. 00:02:54.719 --> 00:02:57.159 Now these are the generations of Terah. 00:02:57.159 --> 00:03:01.919 Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran fathered Lot. 00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:07.859 Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his kindred in Ur of the Chaldeans. 00:03:08.400 --> 00:03:10.439 And Abram and Nahor took wives. 00:03:11.159 --> 00:03:15.579 The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife Milcah, 00:03:16.079 --> 00:03:18.659 the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah. 00:03:19.219 --> 00:03:20.740 Now Sarai was barren. 00:03:21.139 --> 00:03:22.079 She had no child. 00:03:22.080 --> 00:03:26.320 Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, 00:06:23.079 --> 00:06:29.540 That's the aim this morning, is that we would see that if you are in Christ Jesus by faith, 00:06:29.540 --> 00:06:39.520 then regardless of whether you are ethnically Jewish or Palestinian or Russian or American, 00:06:39.760 --> 00:06:44.080 whether you are white or black or rich or poor, young or old, 00:06:44.379 --> 00:06:50.280 if you are in Christ by faith, then you are a son of Abraham 00:06:50.280 --> 00:06:55.939 and an heir of the promises God makes to Abraham here in Genesis chapter 12. 00:06:55.939 --> 00:07:02.199 I want us to see how good this is because sometimes we have this tendency 00:07:02.199 --> 00:07:05.779 where we tend to read promises like this in the Old Testament 00:07:05.779 --> 00:07:11.139 as if we were some uninvolved third party reading off somebody else's will. 00:07:12.439 --> 00:07:16.500 And so we read the promises in a disinterested sort of way, 00:07:16.600 --> 00:07:18.540 thinking that these are for somebody else. 00:07:18.600 --> 00:07:19.819 They have nothing to do with me. 00:07:19.819 --> 00:07:27.599 I want you to see this morning that this is yours in Christ. 00:07:28.800 --> 00:07:33.459 That these promises are yours in Christ. 00:07:34.120 --> 00:07:40.319 And so we ought to read passages like this with expectation and excitement 00:07:40.319 --> 00:07:44.439 that, praise God, these promises are coming to us 00:07:44.439 --> 00:07:48.060 if we are united to Christ by faith. 00:07:48.060 --> 00:07:50.259 So let's look at our text this morning. 00:07:50.339 --> 00:07:53.459 I want to ask three questions of our text this morning. 00:07:53.579 --> 00:07:54.220 Three questions. 00:07:54.379 --> 00:07:55.920 This will be our outline if you're taking notes. 00:07:56.079 --> 00:07:59.839 Question number one is what is promised here? 00:08:00.759 --> 00:08:01.899 What are the promises? 00:08:02.199 --> 00:08:03.120 What's being promised? 00:08:03.980 --> 00:08:08.680 At the end of chapter 11 here, it transitions us to the story of Abram. 00:08:09.680 --> 00:08:12.060 Terah took his family and settled in the land of Haran. 00:08:12.840 --> 00:08:15.340 That would be somewhere kind of modern day Turkey. 00:08:15.339 --> 00:08:19.659 And you remember earlier in chapter 11, if you were here for this, 00:08:19.739 --> 00:08:21.119 the Tower of Babel. 00:08:21.759 --> 00:08:24.579 All the peoples of the earth are spread abroad. 00:08:24.899 --> 00:08:27.339 God scattered them to the ends of the earth. 00:08:27.479 --> 00:08:31.099 But here in chapter 12, we see something extraordinary happens. 00:08:31.479 --> 00:08:36.139 Out of all the peoples of the earth, God speaks to Abram. 00:08:36.980 --> 00:08:42.659 Out of all the peoples of the earth, the word of the Lord comes to this one man, Abram. 00:08:42.659 --> 00:08:44.279 That is unusual. 00:08:45.240 --> 00:08:49.860 We should recognize that this is unprompted and unusual. 00:08:50.319 --> 00:08:55.259 And even how unlikely Abram is to be a candidate for the word of the Lord to come to him. 00:08:56.299 --> 00:08:59.139 Who is Abram that God should speak to him? 00:09:00.219 --> 00:09:01.120 Who is Abram? 00:09:01.159 --> 00:09:04.719 What's so special about him that God would reveal himself to him? 00:09:04.839 --> 00:09:06.620 He's old for one. 00:09:07.399 --> 00:09:09.299 He's childless for another. 00:09:09.980 --> 00:09:13.019 And Moses makes sure that we know that his wife Sarai is barren. 00:09:13.399 --> 00:09:16.899 And more than that, Abram at this point in his life, he's a pagan. 00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:19.659 Abram does not worship the Lord. 00:09:19.759 --> 00:09:23.659 His hometown Ur of the Chaldeans is known for paganism. 00:09:23.919 --> 00:09:26.539 There is nothing special about Abram. 00:09:26.620 --> 00:09:28.299 He does not know the Lord. 00:09:28.759 --> 00:09:30.159 Why does God speak to him? 00:09:30.159 --> 00:09:37.360 This call is sheerly by the grace and sovereign will of God. 00:09:38.639 --> 00:09:42.219 That's how it is anytime God calls anybody. 00:09:42.620 --> 00:09:44.059 We see it all throughout the scriptures. 00:09:44.279 --> 00:09:45.219 God chooses. 00:09:45.559 --> 00:09:46.659 God reveals. 00:09:46.959 --> 00:09:50.819 God speaks of his own will, of his own initiative. 00:09:50.820 --> 00:09:58.800 And often he speaks and often he calls what from the outside perspective looks like unlikely candidates. 00:09:59.960 --> 00:10:06.860 So Paul, later on as he writes to the church in Corinth, as he looks around at them, at these unlikely converts, 00:10:07.100 --> 00:10:11.200 he reminds them how unimpressive they are from a worldly perspective. 00:10:11.860 --> 00:10:14.220 He says, consider your calling, brothers. 00:10:15.040 --> 00:10:17.660 Not many of you were wise according to worldly standards. 00:10:17.659 --> 00:10:19.279 Not many were powerful. 00:10:19.519 --> 00:10:21.059 Not many were of noble birth. 00:10:22.219 --> 00:10:25.360 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise. 00:10:26.219 --> 00:10:30.019 God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong. 00:10:30.959 --> 00:10:37.259 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing the things that are. 00:10:37.379 --> 00:10:37.679 Why? 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:42.919 So that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 00:10:42.919 --> 00:10:43.000 God. 00:10:44.199 --> 00:10:47.479 We're here at the onset of the life of Abram. 00:10:47.719 --> 00:10:53.299 And we need to be reminded that everything we're about to see from chapter 11 to chapter 25, 00:10:53.620 --> 00:11:00.059 everything that we read about this great man of faith, this great father of the faith, this great hero of the faith, 00:11:00.199 --> 00:11:04.240 all of it from beginning to end is God's work. 00:11:04.240 --> 00:11:07.399 God speaks. 00:11:08.720 --> 00:11:10.539 God calls Abram. 00:11:10.580 --> 00:11:11.200 And what does he say? 00:11:11.279 --> 00:11:13.279 Verse 1, chapter 12. 00:11:14.220 --> 00:11:14.519 He says, 00:11:14.519 --> 00:11:43.079 It's a little harder to see it in our translation, but there's actually two commands given here. 00:11:43.080 --> 00:11:44.680 Two commands. 00:11:45.220 --> 00:11:47.080 The first one is the obvious one. 00:11:47.160 --> 00:11:47.740 It's go. 00:11:48.740 --> 00:11:49.500 God says, 00:11:49.940 --> 00:11:50.180 Go. 00:11:50.360 --> 00:11:52.500 Go leave this pagan place. 00:11:53.400 --> 00:11:54.800 Go leave everything that you know. 00:11:54.920 --> 00:11:56.200 Go leave your father's house. 00:11:56.340 --> 00:11:57.620 Go leave what's familiar. 00:11:57.900 --> 00:11:58.720 book of Genesis up to this point. 00:12:53.899 --> 00:12:54.580 Do you realize, 00:12:54.680 --> 00:12:57.740 Do you remember the problem that we're encountering here in Genesis? 00:12:58.800 --> 00:13:00.379 Remember where we are. 00:13:00.379 --> 00:13:05.299 Sin has wrecked the relationship between God and man. 00:13:06.460 --> 00:13:10.159 Adam and Eve once enjoyed the blessing of God. 00:13:10.279 --> 00:13:11.240 And Adam and Eve, 00:13:11.340 --> 00:13:13.419 They were meant to bless the world. 00:13:13.519 --> 00:13:16.159 But instead of obeying the command of God, 00:13:16.240 --> 00:13:16.740 What happened? 00:13:17.779 --> 00:13:19.000 They disobeyed. 00:13:19.840 --> 00:13:20.679 They rebelled. 00:13:20.840 --> 00:13:22.700 They sinned against Him. 00:13:22.960 --> 00:13:27.200 They brought curse rather than blessing into God's world. 00:13:27.200 --> 00:13:33.100 And so everything from that point of sin in the garden up until now, 00:13:33.580 --> 00:13:35.420 It's all been pretty depressing, hasn't it? 00:13:36.220 --> 00:13:39.520 This is not a positive story up to this point. 00:13:40.800 --> 00:13:43.259 Curse has been the theme so far. 00:13:44.460 --> 00:13:47.080 Adam and Eve are kicked out of the garden paradise. 00:13:47.320 --> 00:13:49.160 Cain, their son, murders Abel. 00:13:49.879 --> 00:13:52.040 Lamech murders a man for striking him. 00:13:52.100 --> 00:13:52.980 He boasts of it. 00:13:52.980 --> 00:13:56.420 All the earth is wicked in the sight of God. 00:13:56.500 --> 00:14:00.480 And so all the earth is wiped away in a global flood of His wrath. 00:14:01.399 --> 00:14:04.019 All the peoples of the earth are filled with pride. 00:14:04.120 --> 00:14:08.420 And so the Lord scatters them to the ends of the earth at the Tower of Babel. 00:14:08.419 --> 00:14:16.039 But right in the midst of this darkness is a ray of hope. 00:14:16.879 --> 00:14:23.719 A ray of light in the midst of this curse God has promised to bless. 00:14:25.139 --> 00:14:27.539 And we see now how He's going to do it. 00:14:27.579 --> 00:14:29.939 He's doing it through Abram. 00:14:29.940 --> 00:14:35.000 Now, I realize that we're reading history here. 00:14:35.080 --> 00:14:38.620 We're a long way removed from the text and what we're reading this morning. 00:14:38.700 --> 00:14:44.380 But we should remember, church, that you and I live in the same world as the world of Genesis. 00:14:44.379 --> 00:14:56.960 The same curse of sin that explains all of the rebellion, all of the evil, all of the hardship, all of the thorns and the thistles of the world of Genesis, 00:14:57.480 --> 00:15:02.360 also explains all of the horrible things that happen in our world today. 00:15:03.679 --> 00:15:07.080 The curse of sin has not yet gone away. 00:15:07.080 --> 00:15:11.480 In fact, it seems like everywhere we look, all we see is the effect of sin. 00:15:13.060 --> 00:15:13.920 We watch the news. 00:15:14.060 --> 00:15:16.879 We see nation warring against nation. 00:15:17.920 --> 00:15:22.540 We see families torn apart by addictions. 00:15:23.560 --> 00:15:31.840 We see marriages falling apart because of selfishness and pride and lust and covetousness. 00:15:31.940 --> 00:15:35.120 We see sickness and death everywhere we look. 00:15:35.120 --> 00:15:42.860 And we might be prone to wonder, where in the world can we look to find blessing rather than curse? 00:15:45.580 --> 00:15:49.560 God tells us we look to the promise of God. 00:15:50.840 --> 00:15:53.820 He's already promised all the way back in Genesis 3.15. 00:15:53.820 --> 00:16:07.300 His plan, his eternal plan, is to send an offspring of the woman to crush the head of the serpent and undo all the effects of the fall. 00:16:08.360 --> 00:16:10.620 And now that promise gets clarified. 00:16:11.100 --> 00:16:14.220 Here with this promise to Abram, it gets a little bit more focused. 00:16:14.680 --> 00:16:20.460 He tells us here his plan is to bless the world through Abram. 00:16:20.460 --> 00:16:31.759 In the midst of this darkness and hopelessness and the curse of sin, God promises blessing in place of cursing. 00:16:31.759 --> 00:16:38.840 Where there are thorns and thistles, he now promises a new place, a new promised land. 00:16:38.960 --> 00:16:41.879 Where all the enemies are all around in the land. 00:16:41.980 --> 00:16:44.980 Now those enemies, they become God's mission field. 00:16:45.100 --> 00:16:46.840 They too can be blessed in Abram. 00:16:48.139 --> 00:16:52.980 The snake crusher we see here will be an offspring of Abram. 00:16:53.039 --> 00:16:55.779 And we know on this side of the cross who that is, don't we? 00:16:55.779 --> 00:17:01.399 The offspring of Abram is Christ Jesus. 00:17:02.299 --> 00:17:08.480 And it is in him, through him, that we find blessing rather than cursing. 00:17:08.579 --> 00:17:15.539 It's in him, and in him only, that all the nations of the earth can be blessed. 00:17:15.680 --> 00:17:17.759 Do you see God's plan of redemption here? 00:17:17.759 --> 00:17:23.519 This is incredible hope that God gives to Abram. 00:17:23.640 --> 00:17:28.440 But of course, from a fleshly perspective, there's some problems to work through, aren't there? 00:17:29.299 --> 00:17:30.500 Abram is old. 00:17:31.619 --> 00:17:32.720 He's childless. 00:17:32.839 --> 00:17:34.339 Sarai is barren. 00:17:34.440 --> 00:17:37.599 The land where God calls him to go, that's enemy territory. 00:17:37.599 --> 00:17:39.920 It's occupied by the seed of the serpent. 00:17:40.400 --> 00:17:43.680 How in the world will God do what he promised? 00:17:43.940 --> 00:17:47.180 Naturally, if this were me, I would have a ton of questions. 00:17:47.759 --> 00:17:51.220 I would want to see the whole picture laid out before I took a step. 00:17:52.160 --> 00:17:57.500 But for Abram, God speaks, and that seems like it was enough, doesn't it? 00:17:58.720 --> 00:18:00.660 Look at how he responds the promises? 00:18:10.819 --> 00:18:19.179 To put it in a word, Abram responds to God's command and to God's promise with faith. 00:18:21.179 --> 00:18:21.819 Faith. 00:18:23.099 --> 00:18:26.960 He believed the word of the Lord. 00:18:28.119 --> 00:18:31.039 He trusted in his promises. 00:18:31.240 --> 00:18:32.500 That's what faith is. 00:18:32.679 --> 00:18:36.200 Faith is trust in the promises of God. 00:18:36.200 --> 00:18:40.700 Paul says in Romans chapter 4 about Abram, he says, 00:18:41.059 --> 00:18:44.779 No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God. 00:18:45.460 --> 00:18:49.340 But he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, 00:18:49.700 --> 00:18:52.779 fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. 00:18:54.180 --> 00:18:59.019 He 00:28:26.899 There's always layers. 00:28:28.119 --> 00:28:34.279 What we need to understand is that God's one eternal plan of redemption 00:28:34.279 --> 00:28:38.179 for his one redeemed people descent, the Jews, 00:28:49.180 --> 00:28:52.019 they were given the physical land of Canaan. 00:28:52.120 --> 00:28:53.120 They were brought out of Egypt. 00:28:53.320 --> 00:28:55.540 They were brought into the promised land. 00:28:55.640 --> 00:28:58.360 That promise was fulfilled in the Old Covenant. 00:28:58.500 --> 00:29:00.420 That's one layer of fulfillment 00:29:00.420 --> 00:29:02.440 in a physical place, Canaan, 00:29:02.900 --> 00:29:05.220 for the physical descendants, the Jews, 00:29:05.660 --> 00:29:06.680 in the Old Covenant. 00:29:06.680 --> 00:29:12.880 But the New Testament broadens our understanding, 00:29:13.140 --> 00:29:16.720 teaches us to see another greater fulfillment. 00:29:16.960 --> 00:29:19.140 It teaches us to look to Christ 00:29:19.140 -->
