In response to that, another 00:00:51.920 --> 00:00:59.200 person chimed in and said, yes, the beginning of sorrows, Matthew 24, Australian wildfires, 00:00:59.960 --> 00:01:07.400 coronavirus, earthquakes in odd places, increased rage and murders worldwide, massive hunger 00:01:07.400 --> 00:01:16.980 increases, hashtag Jesus is coming. The end of the world is here. According to a religion 00:01:16.980 --> 00:01:21.719 professor at the University of Alberta, there are some Christians out there claiming right 00:01:21.719 --> 00:01:27.540 now that the Bible foretold this pandemic long ago, right there in Revelation where it talks 00:01:27.540 --> 00:01:35.540 about one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse who represents pestilence or plague. He's galloping 00:01:35.540 --> 00:01:42.659 across the globe right now is what he says some Christians are saying. The end of the world 00:01:42.659 --> 00:01:52.019 is just around the corner. And whether people agree with that or not, it has got many people, 00:01:52.539 --> 00:02:01.319 especially Christians, thinking about the end of the world. When it truly does come, what will it be 00:02:01.319 --> 00:02:09.859 like? Well, Jesus long ago talked about the end of the world. He talked about what will happen in the 00:02:09.860 --> 00:02:16.400 distant future. He talked about the final judgment. And unlike many of the voices out there on social 00:02:16.400 --> 00:02:24.560 media right now, we can trust with certainty the words of Jesus. This morning, we look a little, 00:02:25.060 --> 00:02:32.040 look at just a little of what Jesus had to say about the day of judgment. We've been working through the gospel of John, 00:02:38.340 --> 00:02:44.960 the story of Jesus as told by John. And if you missed last week, last Sunday, I gave a bit of a 00:02:44.960 --> 00:02:51.340 summary of all that's been happening up in the story of up until now in the story of Jesus. This morning, we find Jesus in Jerusalem. Jesus is having a heated discussion 00:03:05.419 --> 00:03:15.079 with the religious leaders. Jesus has just healed a man on the Sabbath day. And now the religious 00:03:15.079 --> 00:03:23.299 leaders are coming after him again. In fact, John tells us that Jesus was already on their wanted list. 00:03:23.699 --> 00:03:33.259 Even before he did this, the religious leaders wanted Jesus dead. And now as they're having this 00:03:33.259 --> 00:03:38.819 conversation with Jesus, they want him dead even more because of the things Jesus is saying. 00:03:40.379 --> 00:03:48.899 Jesus has been claiming to have a special relationship with God, a father-son relationship 00:03:48.899 --> 00:03:55.799 with God. The religious leaders have been listening to this and they hear him claiming to be that 00:03:55.800 --> 00:04:05.320 on the same level with God or equal to God. Last Sunday, we heard Jesus speak these words at the end 00:04:05.320 --> 00:04:15.240 of verse 20. He said, yes, and he, the father will show him the son, even greater works than these 00:04:15.240 --> 00:04:23.720 so that you will be amazed. What is Jesus saying? The healing of that man by the pool of Siloam, 00:04:23.720 --> 00:04:29.900 that guy who couldn't walk for 38 years, that's nothing. You're going to see more amazing things 00:04:29.900 --> 00:04:35.420 than that. And then Jesus tells them about two amazing things that they will see. 00:04:35.880 --> 00:04:43.700 And the first of these two things we talked about last Sunday, Jesus told them that just as the father 00:04:43.700 --> 00:04:50.720 raises the dead and gives them life, so also the son raises the dead and gives life to whom he's 00:04:50.720 --> 00:04:58.040 pleased to give it. That's something you will see. He told them that the time has come now for people 00:04:58.040 --> 00:05:07.640 to hear and believe his words and receive eternal life. Jesus told them that they will one day see 00:05:07.640 --> 00:05:14.080 something really amazing that he will do, that one day they will hear his voice calling them out of 00:05:14.079 --> 00:05:21.919 their graves to final judgment. So the first amazing thing was that Jesus, he said, you will see that 00:05:21.919 --> 00:05:29.959 the son of God has power to raise the dead back to life. This morning, we look at the second amazing 00:05:29.959 --> 00:05:36.639 thing that Jesus says they will see, and it has to do with the final judgment at the end of the world. 00:05:36.959 --> 00:05:40.419 We're going to pick it up in verse 21 here. 00:05:40.420 --> 00:05:47.439 For just as the father raises the dead and gives them life, even so the son gives life to whom he is 00:05:47.439 --> 00:05:58.639 pleased to give it. Moreover, another thing that you will see, the father judges no one, but has entrusted 00:05:58.639 --> 00:06:08.259 all judgment to the son. Let me read those words again. The father judges no one, says Jesus, 00:06:08.259 --> 00:06:17.620 but has entrusted all judgment to the son. Now let's imagine for a moment what the reaction of 00:06:17.620 --> 00:06:23.379 the religious leaders would have been to that statement. I imagine they'd be thinking something 00:06:23.379 --> 00:06:31.819 like this, like, do you hear what this man is saying? You're saying that God will not judge the 00:06:31.819 --> 00:06:42.199 world. Why? Because he has, what, delegated that special right and responsibility to you? A mere man? 00:06:43.779 --> 00:06:50.680 Blasphemy! Is probably what they're thinking. How dare you speak like that? 00:06:50.680 --> 00:06:58.079 Perhaps some of them even had some of the Old Testament scriptures come to mind. Passages like 00:06:58.079 --> 00:07:01.840 Psalm 75 verse 7, where it says, 00:07:02.040 --> 00:07:12.800 It is God who judges. He brings one down. He exalts another. Or passages like Isaiah 33, 22. 00:07:12.800 --> 00:07:24.500 For the Lord is our judge, our lawgiver, our king. It is he who will save us. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God. 00:07:24.560 --> 00:07:32.439 The Lord is one. There's only one God. And as Abraham said long ago, he is the judge of all the earth. 00:07:32.540 --> 00:07:40.680 So who do you think you are, Jesus of Nazareth, to claim to have authority to judge? 00:07:40.680 --> 00:07:46.079 That's what I imagine they might be thinking right now. 00:07:47.280 --> 00:07:51.240 But this is what Jesus said that day. 00:07:52.340 --> 00:07:59.300 The Father judges no one, but has statement to the religious leaders 00:12:41.879 --> 00:12:45.740 and say, I and the Father are one. 00:12:47.740 --> 00:12:49.779 Two distinct persons, 00:12:50.399 --> 00:12:53.860 and yet one and the same God. 00:12:55.059 --> 00:12:59.759 Jesus is both truly human and truly divine. 00:13:00.840 --> 00:13:02.639 John told us this at the very beginning. 00:13:02.820 --> 00:13:06.440 He said that Jesus is more than just a human being. 00:13:06.580 --> 00:13:09.360 He is the Word who was God 00:13:09.360 --> 00:13:12.480 and was with God at the very beginning 00:13:12.480 --> 00:13:14.480 before anything was made. 00:13:16.440 --> 00:13:20.159 The Father loves the Son. 00:13:21.480 --> 00:13:23.919 And so that the Son might be respected 00:13:23.919 --> 00:13:29.240 and honored and glorified as he deserves to be, 00:13:29.320 --> 00:13:31.960 God has entrusted this very special work, 00:13:32.220 --> 00:13:36.300 the work of judging to his Son, Jesus. 00:13:36.299 --> 00:13:40.359 And what kind of judgment are we talking about here? 00:13:41.259 --> 00:13:42.639 Notice Jesus' words. 00:13:43.719 --> 00:13:48.179 Has entrusted all judgment to the Son. 00:13:50.819 has entrusted all judgment to the Son, 00:14:03.679 --> 00:14:06.079 and he has done it so that the Son might be honored. 00:14:07.120 --> 00:14:08.819 But he's done it for another reason. through the prophet Daniel. 00:14:49.080 --> 00:14:52.560 God gave the prophet Daniel a vision, 00:14:52.820 --> 00:14:54.920 and this is how Daniel described it, 00:14:55.139 --> 00:14:56.120 as we read earlier. 00:14:57.000 --> 00:14:58.160 In my vision at night, 00:14:58.259 --> 00:14:58.780 I looked, 00:14:59.580 --> 00:15:03.000 and there before me was one like a Son of Man 00:15:03.000 -->
