you are. 00:05:04.819 --> 00:05:07.480 And that has still stuck to me till this day. 00:05:07.480 --> 00:05:18.640 Well, here in this passage, Paul is reminding the believers of the church in Colossae of who they are. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:26.939 He's saying, remember who you are and how they are changed in Christ, that they live in him and for him. 00:05:27.660 --> 00:05:30.740 They no longer live like they used to. 00:05:30.740 --> 00:05:34.720 It is easy to forget that, isn't it, as Christians. 00:05:35.360 --> 00:05:44.019 Studying this passage this week, it has been so convicting and challenging, but also really encouraging. 00:05:44.840 --> 00:05:48.720 And a great reminder of how Christ has made us new. 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:58.800 And I pray that if you are feeling weak and heavy and burdened as a Christian, I hope that you'll be encouraged today by this word. 00:05:58.800 --> 00:06:02.879 I want to look at three different reminders this morning. 00:06:03.759 --> 00:06:10.120 The first reminder, remember to set your heart and mind on the things above. 00:06:11.980 --> 00:06:13.480 Look at verse one with me. 00:06:14.780 --> 00:06:15.819 Ralph read this 00:06:24.660 --> 00:06:27.840 You see, Paul is summing up what he has just talked about. 00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:31.959 So far he has talked about that you are free in Christ. 00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:36.819 You are no longer bound by human traditions and rules. 00:06:37.500 --> 00:06:40.620 But you are actually free to live in Christ. 00:06:41.599 --> 00:06:43.939 And so he's emphasizing that point. 00:06:44.059 --> 00:06:46.439 Since you have been raised with Christ. 00:06:47.159 --> 00:06:50.120 So the question is, have you been raised with Christ this morning? 00:06:50.120 --> 00:06:53.459 In chapter two, verse 20. 00:06:54.340 --> 00:06:59.579 It says, since you have died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world. 00:07:00.579 --> 00:07:03.280 So he's talking about you have died with Christ. 00:07:03.480 --> 00:07:06.840 And now he's saying, since you have been raised with Christ. 00:07:06.839 --> 00:07:14.019 So Paul is saying, so sorry, picking back up in verse one. 00:07:14.759 --> 00:07:16.139 Since you have been raised with Christ. 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:19.099 We have a new perspective, don't we? 00:07:20.239 --> 00:07:23.779 We have a new perspective in this life. 00:07:24.419 --> 00:07:29.219 So Paul is saying to the believers to set their hearts on things above. 00:07:29.220 --> 00:07:33.440 In other words, as Christians, we look ahead, don't we? 00:07:34.620 --> 00:07:36.680 We look ahead to where our home is. 00:07:38.120 --> 00:07:42.640 Our home is dwelling with Christ face to face. 00:07:43.300 --> 00:07:44.120 Worshipping him. 00:07:44.700 --> 00:07:46.800 That is our home to dwell with him. 00:07:47.520 --> 00:07:48.720 In relationship with him. 00:07:49.140 --> 00:07:51.840 This is what our hearts should long for. 00:07:51.839 --> 00:07:55.839 And so Paul is saying, set your hearts on the things above. 00:08:01.060 --> 00:08:03.779 If this is the case that you have been raised with Christ. our hearts on things above, but our minds also. 00:08:19.540 --> 00:08:23.740 But our minds not on the earthly things. 00:08:24.280 --> 00:08:31.360 Now just to clarify, this doesn't mean that we don't care about things or things are important in our life. 00:08:32.860 --> 00:08:40.240 There are many places in the Bible that talk about that we should enjoy this life and enjoy the gifts that God has given us. 00:08:41.120 --> 00:08:42.740 Just read the book of Ecclesiastes. 00:08:44.659 --> 00:08:48.320 So why should we not set our minds on earthly things? 00:08:48.320 --> 00:08:50.040 There are two reasons. 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:55.379 First, the things on this earth are so temporary. 00:08:56.240 --> 00:08:59.400 They are here one minute and gone the next. 00:09:00.560 --> 00:09:03.879 The second, look with me in verse three. 00:09:04.879 --> 00:09:10.500 For you died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 00:09:11.500 --> 00:09:14.420 So your life is not of this world anymore. 00:09:14.419 --> 00:09:17.839 Your life is hidden with Christ. 00:09:18.539 --> 00:09:20.299 And you are his. 00:09:22.699 --> 00:09:24.059 Our life is his. 00:09:24.519 --> 00:09:26.079 Look with me in verse four. 00:09:26.979 --> 00:09:32.539 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you will also appear with him in glory. 00:09:32.539 --> 00:09:36.299 What an encouragement that is, brothers and sisters. 00:09:37.659 --> 00:09:39.139 Christ, who is your life. 00:09:39.500 --> 00:09:43.779 When Christ appears, we will appear with him in glory. 00:09:44.819 00:10:01.019 But just complete and utter joy in Christ. 00:10:02.459 --> 00:10:05.279 And that was what Paul is reminding these believers. 00:10:05.980 --> 00:10:08.899 And it is a great reminder to us. 00:10:08.899 --> 00:10:13.519 That is an encouraging thought to set our minds on things above. 00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:17.860 However, we don't just sit back and wait for that day and do nothing, do we? 00:10:18.919 --> 00:10:23.139 We have been changed, radically changed by Christ. 00:10:23.819 --> 00:10:27.919 So this should impact the way we live in this world. 00:10:29.360 --> 00:10:34.199 The second reminder is remember to put on the new self. 00:10:35.539 --> 00:10:37.199 Look with me in verse five. 00:10:37.200 --> 00:10:42.500 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature. 00:10:43.160 --> 00:10:49.920 Sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry. 00:10:51.420 --> 00:10:55.259 Paul is saying put to death everything in our earthly nature. 00:10:56.120 --> 00:10:58.920 That means our earthly nature is sinful, isn't it? 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:03.540 Something we battle with every single day. 00:11:03.539 --> 00:11:09.039 And these things lead to destruction and death. 00:11:10.500 --> 00:11:12.419 But they also lead to something else. 00:11:12.599 --> 00:11:13.579 Look with me in verse six. 00:11:14.360 --> 00:11:18.339 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 00:11:21.579 --> 00:11:27.319 The wrath of God is coming and he will judge sin once and for all. 00:11:27.320 --> 00:11:31.640 This is what saying even in verse seven that you used to walk in these ways in the life we once lived. 00:11:56.879 --> 00:11:59.820 Isn't that amazing? 00:11:59.919 --> 00:12:02.360 We used to live like this. 00:12:03.019 --> 00:12:04.840 We still struggle with this. 00:12:05.019 --> 00:12:06.720 But we used to live like this. 00:12:07.240 --> 00:12:11.200 We were doomed to face God's wrath. 00:12:11.860 --> 00:12:15.379 But yet Jesus took it on himself for us. 00:12:16.539 --> 00:12:19.480 Graciously offering mercy to us. 00:12:19.600 --> 00:12:20.960 We do not deserve that. 00:12:23.559 --> 00:12:25.159 But let me ask you a question. 00:12:25.159 --> 00:12:28.819 Do you struggle to put to death the old self? 00:12:29.939 --> 00:12:33.319 Or does it rear its head from time to time? --> 00:13:52.379 made a new creation and alive in Christ, 00:13:52.779 --> 00:13:55.519 we should be radically different. 00:13:56.179 --> 00:14:01.039 We should be radically different to the
