in my early 20s. 00:00:35.420 --> 00:00:42.519 And it's a psalm that speaks of the kind of passionate, intimate, close relationship that we can have with God. 00:00:43.200 --> 00:00:46.019 So I'm David. 00:02:22.719 --> 00:02:27.139 Man who lived about a thousand years before Jesus came. 00:02:28.099 --> 00:02:33.379 And we don't know if this was a song or just a prayer. 00:02:33.599 --> 00:02:39.159 But it's very poetic in the way that it's phrased. 00:02:40.379 --> 00:02:47.019 And David tells us something of the occasion that he was in. 00:02:47.079 --> 00:02:49.639 The situation he was in when this was written. 00:02:50.379 --> 00:02:52.719 It says when he was in the desert of Judah. 00:02:53.500 --> 00:02:57.479 Now it's difficult to pin down exactly when in David's life this took place. 00:02:57.539 --> 00:03:01.400 Because David had a couple times when he was in the desert of Judah. 00:03:01.400 --> 00:03:11.740 The first was early on in his life when he was being basically chased and hunted by the king of those days. 00:03:11.740 --> 00:03:12.759 Which was King Saul. 00:03:13.740 --> 00:03:15.480 And he was running for his life. 00:03:16.360 --> 00:03:18.640 And then the second time was much later in his life. 00:03:18.719 --> 00:03:20.640 He'd already been king for quite a long time. 00:03:20.719 --> 00:03:24.920 And then his son Absalom kind of rose up against him and chased him off the throne. 00:03:24.919 --> 00:03:31.359 And so he found himself fleeing again and in the wilderness running for his life. 00:03:32.019 --> 00:03:37.579 And there's a few verses in this psalm that kind of fit either one of those quite well. 00:03:37.699 --> 00:03:42.959 But at the end of the day we don't know for sure exactly when in his life he wrote this. 00:03:42.960 --> 00:03:51.060 Usually with these psalms on Sundays in the summer here I've been kind of dividing up the psalm to help us see the structure of it. 00:03:51.120 --> 00:03:53.319 And looking at it and working through it piece by piece. 00:03:53.680 --> 00:03:56.060 But I found it difficult to do that with this psalm. 00:03:56.420 --> 00:04:00.100 It's only 11 verses and I seem to find six different parts. 00:04:00.319 --> 00:04:02.560 So rather than dividing it up that way. 00:04:02.780 --> 00:04:07.740 We're going to look instead at three of the themes that are woven throughout the psalm. 00:04:07.740 --> 00:04:14.200 And we'll start by looking at first David's circumstances. 00:04:16.460 --> 00:04:20.680 So let's start by looking at these first verses here. 00:04:21.379 --> 00:04:24.060 We know from the superscription that David is in the desert. 00:04:25.300 --> 00:04:26.660 And what's it like there? 00:04:27.699 --> 00:04:31.340 In David's first words in verse 1 he mentions thirst. 00:04:32.699 --> 00:04:33.439 He says, 00:04:33.439 --> 00:04:43.259 So there's the idea of weariness or exhaustion. 00:04:43.819 --> 00:04:47.040 Perhaps from hunger or thirst or just the heat. 00:04:48.279 --> 00:04:51.399 He says that he's in a dry and parched land. 00:04:52.120 --> 00:04:53.560 Where there is no water. 00:04:56.519 --> 00:05:01.000 So David's surroundings and situation are quite unpleasant at the moment. 00:05:01.000 --> 00:05:02.319 He's thirsty. 00:05:02.560 --> 00:05:03.079 He's weary. 00:05:03.259 --> 00:05:04.480 He's out in the elements. 00:05:05.000 --> 00:05:06.560 And there's nothing to give relief. 00:05:08.680 --> 00:05:09.560 Verse 2. 00:05:10.879 --> 00:05:11.240 He says, 00:05:11.379 --> 00:05:15.920 I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 00:05:17.120 --> 00:05:22.560 He has seen God's presence and power and glory with his own eyes. 00:05:22.819 --> 00:05:25.040 But that's not what's happening right now. 00:05:25.160 --> 00:05:27.220 Notice that this is in the past tense. 00:05:27.579 --> 00:05:29.300 I have seen you in the sanctuary. 00:05:29.300 --> 00:05:31.680 I have beheld your power and your glory. 00:05:32.439 --> 00:05:34.020 Back then and there God. 00:05:34.259 --> 00:05:37.199 But right now here in the desert it's implied. 00:05:37.840 --> 00:05:38.720 I don't see you. 00:05:42.400 --> 00:05:43.460 Verse 5. 00:05:44.620 --> 00:05:45.660 David says, 00:05:45.939 --> 00:05:49.480 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods. 00:05:50.759 --> 00:05:52.280 Notice the future tense. 00:05:53.600 --> 00:05:56.340 I will be satisfied as with the richest of foods. 00:05:56.339 --> 00:06:02.479 But here in the present it's sort of implied that here in the desert the richest foods are not what's on the menu. 00:06:03.619 --> 00:06:06.079 And neither is the satisfaction that goes with it. 00:06:08.919 --> 00:06:13.399 In verse 7, David is keenly aware of his need for God's help. 00:06:14.559 --> 00:06:18.939 In verse 8, he's aware of his need to be sustained and upheld. 00:06:18.939 --> 00:06:22.000 And so he's clinging to God. 00:06:23.300 --> 00:06:26.800 In verse 9, he tells us that there's people who want to kill him. 00:06:27.759 --> 00:06:30.439 They're out to see him dead. 00:06:31.839 --> 00:06:38.540 And finally in verse 11, he speaks of the mouths of liars. 00:06:38.540 --> 00:06:42.540 There's people spreading lies about him, slander. 00:06:44.540 --> 00:06:49.900 So these are David's circumstances described in poetry throughout the psalm. 00:06:50.680 --> 00:06:51.620 He's out in the desert. 00:06:51.939 --> 00:06:52.580 He's thirsty. 00:06:52.820 --> 00:06:53.540 He's hungry. 00:06:53.680 --> 00:06:54.200 He's weary. 00:06:54.680 --> 00:06:59.660 He's not seeing God visibly as he has in the past. 00:06:59.740 --> 00:07:04.980 He can't just go to the tabernacle, the sanctuary, because he's out here in the desert. 00:07:04.980 --> 00:07:10.000 He's deeply aware of his need for God's help and sustaining. 00:07:10.660 --> 00:07:15.280 And there are these men who are spreading lies about him and seeking to kill him. 00:07:16.520 --> 00:07:20.460 But what's always amazed me and touched me when I read this psalm again 00:07:20.460 --> 00:07:28.120 is how David desires so much more than just the alleviation of his suffering. 00:07:30.140 --> 00:07:33.840 I kept thinking, you know, if I found myself in a situation like this 00:07:33.839 --> 00:07:38.479 and I was to write a psalm, it would probably go something like this. 00:07:39.599 --> 00:07:41.479 You, God, are my God. 00:07:42.659 --> 00:07:46.019 Earnestly, I want to get out of this mess right now. 00:07:46.979 --> 00:07:49.079 I'm thirsty for water to drink. 00:07:49.739 --> 00:07:52.239 My body faints with exhaustion from the heat. 00:07:52.739 --> 00:07:54.000 There's no water here. 00:07:55.299 --> 00:07:58.620 Verse 5, I want to get back to eating the richest of foods. 00:07:58.620 --> 00:08:03.319 Please get me out of this desert right now and deal with my enemies swiftly. 00:08:04.579 --> 00:08:05.019 Amen. 00:08:07.720 --> 00:08:09.879 That's more like how we sometimes pray, isn't it? 00:08:11.439 --> 00:08:14.340 God, please get me out of this situation ASAP. 00:08:15.980 --> 00:08:22.000 And so I'm always surprised again and again when I read what David desires most here. 00:08:22.000 --> 00:08:28.560 You, God, are my God. 00:08:28.720 --> 00:08:31.000 Earnestly, I seek you. 00:08:31.519 --> 00:08:33.000 I thirst for you. 00:08:33.179 --> 00:08:35.259 My whole being longs for you. 00:08:36.100 --> 00:08:38.980 In a dry and parched land where there is no water. 00:08:40.080 --> 00:08:45.580 There's one thing David wants much more than water, food, an easy, comfortable life. 00:08:45.580 --> 00:08:50.139 More than all that, David desires God himself. 00:08:52.940 --> 00:08:57.820 It's like he's saying, that thirst that I feel in my mouth, that's just a picture. 00:08:58.980 --> 00:09:05.680 That's just a parable of how I need you, God. 00:09:07.879 --> 00:09:12.340 Like water would satisfy my thirsty tongue and refresh me and replenish me. 00:09:12.640 --> 00:09:15.000 That's what you, God, are to my soul. 00:09:15.740 --> 00:09:19.600 You are the one that refreshes and replenishes my soul. 00:09:21.139 --> 00:09:25.379 That deals with that deep thirst and dryness that's in here. 00:09:31.120 --> 00:09:36.419 So even though we see that David's situation is somewhat desperate and grim, 00:09:37.059 --> 00:09:39.059 that's not what David's worried about. 00:09:39.059 --> 00:09:45.539 It's like he's looking at all this desperation of his circumstances mainly as a metaphor. 00:09:46.659 --> 00:09:47.359 It's a picture. 00:09:47.559 --> 00:09:51.699 It's a parable of how he truly feels in his heart towards God. 00:09:52.139 --> 00:09:53.779 He's desperate for God. 00:09:53.779 --> 00:09:59.899 And if you look down the page in your Bibles, you'll see these first eight verses are all about God. 00:10:00.139 --> 00:10:02.959 They're all about David's relationship with God. 00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:08.019 I just find this so wonderful, so amazing. 00:10:08.700 --> 00:10:11.720 I mean, we just heard about how bleak David's circumstances are. 00:10:12.200 --> 00:10:14.519 And yet, glance through this whole psalm. 00:10:14.519 --> 00:10:18.419 Does David ask God for anything? 00:10:18.419 --> 00:10:26.899 Is there any specific request that David has for something from God here? 00:10:28.699 --> 00:10:29.559 There's nothing. 00:10:29.559 --> 00:10:34.519 He doesn't ask God for a single thing in this prayer. 00:10:36.219 --> 00:10:40.039 It's quite a contrast, maybe, to our usual prayers, 00:10:40.299 --> 00:10:42.839 where most of our prayers are requests. 00:10:42.979 --> 00:10:44.179 It's things we want from God. 00:10:45.399 --> 00:10:48.419 So if he's not asking for things, what is David saying? 00:10:48.479 --> 00:10:49.959 What is he doing in this prayer? 00:10:50.759 --> 00:10:55.079 Well, in verse 1, we see already that he's expressing his longing for God. 00:10:55.080 --> 00:11:02.879 Then in verse 2, he reminisces about God, about a special moment that he had with God. 00:11:04.280 --> 00:11:09.740 He says, I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 00:11:11.040 --> 00:11:14.000 So he's thinking back to a previous encounter with God, 00:11:14.220 --> 00:11:20.040 probably reflecting on a time when he was in the sanctuary at the tabernacle, 00:11:21.060 --> 00:11:22.740 perhaps worshiping or praying. 00:11:22.740 --> 00:11:24.720 And it seems that, from what David says, 00:11:24.799 --> 00:11:31.500 that God had revealed himself very visibly to David in that moment. 00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:37.279 And David says, I remember seeing your power and your glory. 00:11:42.399 --> 00:11:43.940 This is precious to David. 00:11:44.240 --> 00:11:46.759 Back then, the tabernacle, the sanctuary, 00:11:47.019 --> 00:11:49.060 that was a big part of relationship with God. 00:11:49.059 --> 00:11:53.339 I mean, you came to the tabernacle, the house of the Lord. 00:11:53.559 --> 00:11:54.439 You worshipped. 00:11:54.519 --> 00:11:55.519 You brought your sacrifice. 00:11:55.919 --> 00:11:58.819 You did your praying and your singing there. 00:12:00.279 --> 00:12:02.319 But now David is cut off from that. 00:12:02.739 --> 00:12:05.579 He can't just go there like he's used to. 00:12:06.559 --> 00:12:08.379 He's fleeing for his life in the desert. 00:12:08.379 --> 00:12:14.679 So David does this sort of relational reminiscing out loud in his prayer. 00:12:14.820 --> 00:12:17.879 I remember back to that time when I saw you in the sanctuary. 00:12:18.080 --> 00:12:20.439 I beheld your power and your glory. 00:12:20.860 --> 00:12:22.100 And he continues on with this. 00:12:22.179 --> 00:12:23.659 He says in verse 3, 00:12:23.779 --> 00:12:26.539 Because your love is better than life, 00:12:26.919 --> 00:12:29.159 my lips will glorify you. 00:12:29.159 --> 00:12:37.120 So he's thinking back on his relationship with God, 00:12:37.459 --> 00:12:39.339 how things have gone in his life. 00:12:39.699 --> 00:12:41.939 And he makes this most wonderful of statements. 00:12:42.659 --> 00:12:45.259 Because your love is better than life. 00:12:47.059 --> 00:12:48.199 And that's just the first part. 00:12:48.259 --> 00:12:50.120 He's going to say a bunch more here. 00:12:50.259 --> 00:12:52.620 But let's just stop and think for a moment 00:12:52.620 --> 00:12:54.919 about that statement right had its troubles and challenges, 00:13:24.519 --> 00:13:26.299 the same as all of us do. 00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:29.759 But there's a richness and a beauty to life. 00:13:30.500 --> 00:13:31.600 Life is a treasure. 00:13:32.399 --> 00:13:33.679 It's a gift from God. 00:13:33.840 --> 00:13:35.360 And we all know that. 00:13:35.560 --> 00:13:38.379 Even if at times we lose sight of it or forget it,
