--> 00:04:14.460 And they explain realities for us that we might find difficult to comprehend by ourselves. 00:04:14.460 --> 00:04:21.720 Perhaps then, it's no surprise to find that Jesus faced so many questions. 00:04:22.300 --> 00:04:29.460 People understood Jesus was an authority figure, someone who could help them to understand reality. 00:04:30.160 --> 00:04:33.600 And so we come to a if there is a God, I'm pretty sure that he'll accept me in the end. 00:05:33.800 --> 00:05:37.100 Perhaps that's your understanding. 00:05:37.259 --> 00:05:40.400 Perhaps you know people who have that kind of understanding. 00:05:41.060 --> 00:05:47.060 We meet a man here, a rich young man, who has a slightly different understanding, it seems. 00:05:47.540 --> 00:05:51.660 It seems like he has been living a good life, but he's still feeling dissatisfied. 00:05:52.100 --> 00:05:58.160 He still is not sure if he's going to receive eternal life in the end. 00:05:58.199 --> 00:05:59.379 And so he comes to Jesus. 00:05:59.840 --> 00:06:01.939 He comes to Jesus with real desire. 00:06:01.939 --> 00:06:03.639 Look with me at verse 17. 00:06:05.060 --> 00:06:08.579 We find as Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him. 00:06:08.899 --> 00:06:11.759 So in that day, adults didn't really run, but he comes and he runs. 00:06:12.819 --> 00:06:14.860 And he shows great respect to Jesus. 00:06:15.019 --> 00:06:18.079 He fell on his knees and he calls him a good teacher. 00:06:18.839 --> 00:06:24.899 And then he asks this crucial question, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 00:06:24.899 --> 00:06:31.319 But at the heart of this man's question, as Jesus begins to probe, is another question. 00:06:31.459 --> 00:06:36.299 How good do I need to be to be good enough for God? 00:06:36.879 --> 00:06:39.959 And we see that as Jesus begins to talk to him. 00:06:40.899 --> 00:06:42.539 Jesus says, you called me a good teacher. 00:06:43.379 --> 00:06:44.779 Why do you call me good? 00:06:44.979 --> 00:06:47.279 Since no one is good except God alone. 00:06:47.939 --> 00:06:48.899 What's he doing here? 00:06:48.899 --> 00:06:58.859 He's going to invite the man to see if his idea of his own personal goodness matches up to God's perfect standard of absolute goodness. 00:06:59.679 --> 00:07:01.239 So he gives him a list of commands. 00:07:01.339 --> 00:07:02.279 You know the commandments. 00:07:02.279 --> 00:07:09.299 Verse 19, he gives him a list there of commands drawn from the Ten Commandments. 00:07:09.300 --> 00:07:16.920 And in verse 20, we discover a man who is confident in his law-keeping ability. 00:07:17.439 --> 00:07:19.819 I've kept these since I was a boy. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:24.939 All those commands about loving others, I've kept those since I was a boy. 00:07:26.519 --> 00:07:30.439 So Jesus is going to probe further and challenge further. 00:07:30.540 --> 00:07:33.639 But notice why Jesus does it. 00:07:33.680 --> 00:07:34.580 I think it's really important. 00:07:34.579 --> 00:07:39.599 In verse 21, Jesus looked at him and loved him. 00:07:39.699 --> 00:07:41.620 We need to see that about Jesus. 00:07:41.759 --> 00:07:44.419 He challenges because he loves. 00:07:45.419 --> 00:07:50.459 And his challenge effectively is this in verse 21. 00:07:51.120 --> 00:07:56.360 Do you love God more than you love money? 00:07:56.360 --> 00:08:02.939 If you want treasure in heaven, sell everything, give to the poor, and you'll have it. 00:08:02.939 --> 00:08:04.980 Do you love God more than money? 00:08:05.360 --> 00:08:12.339 And connected to that, can you truly love others by using your money? 00:08:12.680 --> 00:08:17.660 Rather than keeping it to yourself, can you show that you really love by giving? 00:08:18.879 --> Verse 22, at this, the man's face fell. 00:08:29.980 --> 00:08:34.639 Well, he went away sad because he had great wealth. 00:08:35.840 --> 00:08:38.560 The cost was one he was not willing to pay. sometimes we forget that there is an absolute standard. 00:09:04.779 --> 00:09:16.439 We think in relative terms, in comparison, with each other, when all the while God is inviting us to compare with his perfect, absolute standard. 00:09:16.440 --> 00:09:25.640 Every two or three years, it seems like, in Scotland anyway, a really hard higher maths paper is set. 00:09:25.720 --> 00:09:27.620 You read about it in the news. 00:09:28.420 --> 00:09:29.920 That it was far too difficult. 00:09:30.020 --> 00:09:32.980 They were asking questions that pupils hadn't been prepared for. 00:09:33.380 --> 00:09:41.019 --> 00:09:42.879 Now, here's the question. 00:09:43.039 --> 00:09:49.639 When we read the Bible and we read God's commands and we discover that these are difficult things to do, 00:09:50.019 --> 00:09:54.019 is God someone who lowers the pass mark? 00:09:55.299 --> 00:09:57.759 Here's my standard, but I know you're finding it hard. 00:09:57.919 --> 00:10:02.840 Therefore, I'll lower the bar so your idea of goodness can be good enough. 00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:03.259 No. 00:10:04.439 --> 00:10:09.179 God does not grade on a curve like our exam boards do. 00:10:09.179 --> 00:10:17.079 One thing we need to understand about Christianity is it's really honest about our God. 00:10:17.659 --> 00:10:19.339 That God is perfect. 00:10:20.019 --> 00:10:22.859 That he is perfectly holy and good. 00:10:23.179 --> 00:10:24.059 That he hates sin. 00:10:24.159 --> 00:10:27.779 He hates everything that is wrong or unjust or impure. 00:10:27.779 --> 00:10:35.659 And so if we want to earn God's favor, if we want to do something to know God, 00:10:35.980 --> 00:10:42.459 then the standard is 100% perfection in all of our lives. 00:10:42.460 --> 00:10:51.019 That we must love God with all our heart and soul and mind and strength in our words, 00:10:51.240 --> 00:10:58.100 our actions, our thoughts and motives all the time from childhood until death. 00:10:58.300 --> 00:11:06.360 And we must love others with the same kind of energy and care to the details that we apply to ourselves 00:11:06.360 --> 00:11:09.180 as we love and look after ourselves. 00:11:10.539 --> 00:11:15.379 And if we can do that, then we can inherit eternal life. 00:11:15.580 --> 00:11:20.100 But of course, as we all know, when we look at our lives, and we don't need to look very deep, 00:11:20.680 --> 00:11:23.180 none of us can do that. 00:11:23.220 --> 00:11:29.120 As the Bible says, no one is righteous, not even one. 00:11:29.120 --> 00:11:35.539 And so there's honesty about God, and there's honesty about our human condition. 00:11:35.700 --> 00:11:38.060 By ourselves, we are unable. 00:11:38.860 --> 00:11:40.200 But there's also good news. 00:11:40.299 --> 00:11:42.120 There's a hint of the good news. 00:11:42.320 --> 00:11:45.039 In verse 18, Jesus says, 00:11:45.480 --> 00:11:47.139 Why do you call me good? 00:11:47.560 --> 00:11:50.100 No one is good except God alone. 00:11:50.159 --> 00:11:52.940 And here's a glorious thing that we discover about Jesus. 00:11:52.940 --> 00:12:00.840 He is God, and he is truly good as someone who becomes truly man. 00:12:02.160 --> 00:12:10.200 When we look at Jesus in the Gospels, we discover the only one who has ever lived a life of perfect love, 00:12:10.280 --> 00:12:12.300 both towards God and towards other people. 00:12:12.640 --> 00:12:18.160 We discover the only one who has lived in complete obedience to his Father's commands, 00:12:18.200 --> 00:12:21.500 and he's done it with joy all the way through. 00:12:21.500 --> 00:12:28.639 And that's good news for us, because the Bible says Jesus came to do that as a substitute for us. 00:12:29.720 --> 00:12:36.940 We fail, we break the law, we stand condemned, but Jesus comes to stand in our claim, 00:12:37.519 --> 00:12:43.360 to be perfectly righteous where we fail, and that's a gift we receive by faith. 00:12:45.019 --> 00:12:49.919 One of the things this passage, I think, reminds us of is that there are two approaches to Jesus, 00:12:49.919 --> 00:12:54.019 one that is doomed to failure and one that meets with success and blessing. 00:12:54.139 --> 00:12:54.979 You've got the man. 00:12:55.379 --> 00:13:00.779 The man is a model of somebody who comes with, it's like he comes with this religious record of achievement. 00:13:01.299 --> 00:13:04.360 Look, Jesus, here's these commands that I've kept since I was young. 00:13:04.779 --> 00:13:07.799 Here's me, and I'm trusting in my goodness. 00:13:10.259 --> 00:13:11.620 He goes away sad. 00:13:11.620 --> 00:13:14.659 But remember, Jesus met with another group. 00:13:15.799 --> 00:13:18.899 Verse 13, he met with little children. 00:13:19.759 --> 00:13:24.580 How do little children come to the people that they trust? 00:13:24.620 --> 00:13:25.940 You think about little children. 00:13:26.200 --> 00:13:29.700 When they see their mom or their dad or somebody that they trust, 00:13:29.899 --> 00:13:31.539 they come with their arms open, don't they? 00:13:31.940 --> 00:13:38.580 There's absolute trust and faith there to be embraced by the one that they love. 00:13:38.580 --> 00:13:41.560 And that's what we see from the little children. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:44.180 That's the way to blessing. 00:13:45.240 --> 00:13:48.100 Come with your hands empty. 00:13:48.580 --> 00:13:51.320 We have nothing to bring to the table. 00:13:51.860 --> 00:13:59.300 We come to Jesus to receive his righteousness, his goodness and perfection as a gift. 00:13:59.299 --> 00:14:07.539 When you and I, when we stand before God, the judge, at the end of time, as we all will, 00:14:08.479 --> 00:14:16.659 one of the things that we need to think about is what will we point to as the basis for God to accept us? 00:14:17.699 --> 00:14:23.500 When God says to us, why should I let you into my perfection, into heaven? 00:14:24.519 --> 00:14:26.399 Let's learn from the rich man. 00:14:26.399 --> 00:14:29.159 Don't point to ourselves. 00:14:30.220 --> 00:14:32.100 Don't say, here's the things that I've done. 00:14:32.600 --> 00:14:33.639 Because that's not good enough. 00:14:34.419 --> 00:14:36.419 Rather, trust in Jesus. 00:14:38.259 --> 00:14:39.279 Don't look at me. 00:14:39.959 --> 00:14:40.840 Look at your son. 00:14:41.879 --> 00:14:45.819 He lived the perfect life for me that I never could, but I should have. 00:14:46.679 --> 00:14:49.519 And he died for me the death that I deserve. 00:14:50.379 --> 00:14:55.480 Count me righteous because I'm trusting in Jesus alone. 00:14:55.480 --> 00:15:00.740 That's the only answer that God accepts. 00:15:02.159 --> 00:15:08.879 So we need to ask ourselves, is Jesus Christ today my righteousness? 00:15:35.480 And he has made this man and he wants to help this man. 00:15:35.480 --> 00:15:48.860 And similarly, Jesus has made us and he loves us and he wants us to see our heart problem and to see him as its cure. 00:15:50.180 --> 00:15:52.480 In this way, Jesus is like a surgeon. 00:15:52.659 --> 00:16:00.879 Jesus will sometimes cut and cut deeply, but he does it always so that he might bring spiritual healing. 00:16:00.879 --> 00:16:09.019 So when Jesus asks the question in verse 21 of the man to sell everything you have and give to the poor and you'll have treasure in heaven, 00:16:09.379 --> 00:16:12.059 Jesus is not saying if you have money, get rid of it. 00:16:12.120 --> 00:16:17.580 That's not a universal truth to apply to anyone who wants to be a Christian. wouldn't loosen that grip on his money so that he might follow Jesus and inherit eternal life. 00:17:07.160 --> 00:17:11.059 Now, idols, of course, are not just an ancient problem. 00:17:11.740 --> 00:17:22.980 We recognize today, I guess, that money is one of those things that has a huge influence, a huge pull on us and on society. 00:17:22.980 --> 00:17:29.640 This week, I read a couple of articles where the wording idolatry was used. 00:17:29.900 --> 00:17:34.299 So there was one article talking about children's celebrity idols. 00:17:34.900 --> 00:17:39.620 Those involved in education are becoming increasingly concerned that there are some children who are saying, 00:17:40.039 --> 00:17:41.200 I don't need hard work. 00:17:41.339 --> 00:17:42.220 I don't need education. 00:17:42.339 --> 00:17:45.720 What I need to do is get famous like those folks on the telly. 00:17:45.720 --> 00:17:49.019 That's the way to achieve. 00:17:50.720 --> 00:17:55.319 Another article was talking about social media as society's modern-day idol. 00:17:55.460 --> 00:18:00.039 Here's the thing that we bow down to for approval and identity. 00:18:00.779 --> 00:18:08.740 We recognize that there are things in our lives that we choose to value and choose to define us. 00:18:08.740 --> 00:18:16.799 And again, while we're thinking about questions, it's really important for us to be able to reflect on our own lives with honesty. 00:18:17.319 --> 00:18:22.940 Whether we're Christians, whether we're not Christians, what do I value most in my life? 00:18:24.319 --> 00:18:28.160 Where do I 00:18:43.299 We need to ask God to reveal the answers to us, even if they're hard for us to hear, to pray with honesty about those. 00:18:45.539 --> 00:18:47.400 Here's what we have in this story. says, I am the way, the truth, and the life. 00:19:00.779 --> 00:19:10.460 Here is Jesus, the one who is the life of God, who can give the gift of eternal life, who is the treasure in heaven. 00:19:12.139 --> 00:19:18.619 But compared to the money in his pocket, the money in his bank, Jesus didn't seem that glorious. 00:19:19.740 --> 00:19:23.279 He weighed them up and he chose his money. 00:19:23.279 --> 00:19:27.359 The Bible tells us we see the glory of God in the face of Jesus. 00:19:27.480 --> 00:19:31.759 We look at Jesus, we see the character and nature and quality of God.
