00:00:18.199 It was an address to the joint session of Congress, and throughout his very lengthy speech, he acknowledged a few guests that he had invited. 00:00:18.339 --> 00:00:21.960 They were in the gallery, and if you watch, you recognize you'll remember what had happened. 00:00:22.039 --> 00:00:31.519 There were several of them that he went through at various points in his speech, and the point was to put a face on the issues, and then, of course, there were some other motives to that as well. 00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:48.760 For example, when he was pressing in the issue for his immigration policy, he recognized the family of a 12-year-old girl who had tragically been killed by an illegal immigrant. 00:00:48.759 --> 00:01:01.799 And by doing this, he put a face on the issue to try to gain support for what he's doing, help us understand the reality of the situation as he understood it to be. 00:01:02.659 --> 00:01:13.420 But he also gave himself an opportunity to extend a public kindness to the family of that 12-year-old girl who was in attendance. 00:01:13.420 --> 00:01:26.859 And in the case of that particular moment, the kindness was to simply rename a wildlife refuge after the name of the girl who enjoyed wildlife and was passionate about that during her lifetime. 00:01:27.859 --> 00:01:30.820 Now, a lot of public figures will do this, won't they? 00:01:31.000 --> 00:01:32.980 And as they should do. 00:01:33.960 --> 00:01:36.640 And these are often actually quite touching moments for us. 00:01:36.640 --> 00:01:43.879 Remember, on that particular night especially, there was one moment with a little boy who had survived cancer that was just especially touching. 00:01:44.799 --> 00:01:54.780 But even the most genuine acts of kindness in instances like that have a deeply political motivation. 00:01:56.540 --> 00:01:58.439 These people are chosen for a reason. 00:01:58.439 --> 00:02:09.359 Their circumstances provide a unique opportunity for the public figure to gain some political advantage in something that he wants to emphasize. 00:02:09.359 --> 00:02:20.919 And apart from that potential advantage, it's unlikely that they would ever receive the president's personal kindness. 00:02:21.500 --> 00:02:25.699 At least in a nationally televised speech. 00:02:25.699 --> 00:02:38.339 When we get to 2 Samuel chapter 9, we find a very powerful king showing extraordinary kindness to a subject of his kingdom. 00:02:39.239 --> 00:02:46.859 But in this case, there is no conceivable benefit to motivate the king's act. 00:02:48.699 --> 00:02:54.659 His kindness was motivated instead by covenant love. 00:02:55.699 --> 00:03:06.219 And this love was lavished not on a faithful friend, but on a potential enemy. 00:03:07.339 --> 00:03:13.379 A potential threat to his very throne and to the throne of his children. 00:03:14.819 --> 00:03:17.599 It's one of my favorite stories in all of the Bible. 00:03:17.599 --> 00:03:26.819 And it is so because it so beautifully pictures the kindness of God extended to you and me. 00:03:27.539 --> 00:03:28.620 Let's read it together. 00:03:28.819 --> 00:03:30.500 2 ate always at the king's table. 00:06:13.579 --> 00:06:15.259 Now he was lame in both his feet. 00:06:17.199 --> 00:06:21.099 The impact of this story is magnified, I think, 00:06:21.199 --> 00:06:25.539 when we understand the historical context in which it took place. 00:06:26.799 --> 00:06:31.679 And fortunately for us, 2 Samuel gives us a lot of context that helps us understand it. 00:06:31.680 --> 00:06:38.300 The book actually opens by describing the death of David's predecessor, we know to be King Saul. 00:06:38.939 --> 00:06:46.920 But it actually took years for David to have a throne that was established in Israel, even after Saul's death. 00:06:47.720 --> 00:06:51.660 There was an ongoing struggle, an ongoing war, we might say, 00:06:51.720 --> 00:06:56.939 between those who were loyal to the house of Saul and those who were loyal to the house of David. 00:06:56.939 --> 00:07:04.060 And after Saul's death, the tribe of Judah anoints David to be king, 00:07:04.240 --> 00:07:08.579 but they're the only tribe to anoint David to be king and recognize and receive him as king. 00:07:09.360 --> 00:07:15.019 All the other tribes gather and they recognize one of Saul's other sons, Ish-bosheth. 00:07:15.560 --> 00:07:16.839 Ish-bosheth. 00:07:17.620 --> 00:07:19.639 And they anoint him to be their king. 00:07:19.639 --> 00:07:24.360 And so, for a period of two years, David reigns over Judah and Judah alone. 00:07:24.979 --> 00:07:28.819 And during that two years, one of Saul's sons reigns in the other place. 00:07:28.860 --> 00:07:31.639 And there's constant friction between the two, as you might imagine. 00:07:32.519 --> 00:07:36.860 War takes place and unfolds time after time. 00:07:37.959 --> 00:07:39.839 For two years, they fought. 00:07:39.939 --> 00:07:44.959 But we're told in chapter 3 and verse 1 that David grew stronger and stronger 00:07:44.959 --> 00:07:49.359 while the house of Saul became weaker and weaker. 00:07:50.259 --> 00:07:52.759 Beginning in chapter 5, everything shifts. 00:07:54.519 --> 00:07:59.799 Ish-bosheth was killed and David was anointed king over all of Israel, 00:08:00.060 --> 00:08:07.659 which initiated a legitimate golden age of God's blessing to God's people. 00:08:09.000 --> 00:08:13.000 David established Jerusalem as the center of worship. 00:08:13.000 --> 00:08:16.379 He did that in chapter 6 by bringing the Ark of the Covenant, 00:08:17.279 --> 00:08:22.500 the tent of God, and letting it rest in Jerusalem rather than where it had been previous. 00:08:23.779 --> 00:08:29.500 Establishing Jerusalem as the heart of the worship of Almighty God. 00:08:30.920 --> 00:08:34.580 And then in chapter 7, we read of God's covenant with David, 00:08:34.580 --> 00:08:41.100 that one day he would raise up offspring from David's seed, 00:08:41.220 --> 00:08:43.180 who would be a greater king than David. 00:08:44.160 --> 00:08:46.940 Such a king that his throne would see no end. 00:08:47.020 --> 00:08:50.820 He would be an eternal king over God's eternal kingdom. 00:08:51.259 --> 00:08:52.920 And he would occupy the throne forever. 00:08:53.080 --> 00:08:54.620 And then we get to chapter 8, 00:08:54.680 --> 00:08:59.700 and we see that God gave David victory over all his enemies, 00:08:59.820 --> 00:09:02.180 who pressed against Israel literally from every direction. 00:09:02.179 --> 00:09:03.579 He had them coming from the south. 00:09:03.679 --> 00:09:05.219 He had them coming from the east. 00:09:05.299 --> 00:09:06.579 He had them coming from the north. 00:09:07.019 --> 00:09:07.739 Pagan enemies. 00:09:07.919 --> 00:09:10.659 And in every situation, simultaneously, 00:09:11.199 --> 00:09:15.099 God gives victory to David and to his people. 00:09:15.339 --> 00:09:16.519 And what's the point of all of that? 00:09:16.559 --> 00:09:17.579 What is it telling us? 00:09:19.099 --> 00:09:22.539 It's telling us that David was God's king. 00:09:22.539 --> 00:09:30.379 And that the Lord blessed his people through David in every possible way. 00:09:31.339 --> 00:09:33.259 So that when we get to chapter 9, 00:09:33.299 --> 00:09:35.299 and we read of this particular story, 00:09:35.959 --> 00:09:42.360 we find clearly this comes at a time when David needs no advantage. 00:09:43.939 --> 00:09:46.139 He doesn't need to gain political clout. 00:09:46.519 --> 00:09:48.519 He's not trying to raise his poll numbers. 00:09:48.519 --> 00:09:50.639 It's as good as it gets for David. 00:09:50.980 --> 00:09:54.740 And it's as good as it gets for God's people at this time. 00:09:56.319 --> 00:10:00.100 He had the favor of Almighty God resting on him. 00:10:00.860 --> 00:10:03.000 God was blessing everything that he did. 00:10:04.659 --> 00:10:07.679 But David was also the representative of God, 00:10:08.199 --> 00:10:10.259 meant to reflect God's righteousness 00:10:10.259 --> 00:10:14.039 and reveal the nature of God's kingdom. 00:10:14.039 --> 00:10:21.339 But as God's representative, like the rest of us, 00:10:22.480 --> 00:10:24.799 David often fell short of that purpose. 00:10:26.480 --> 00:10:29.059 In fact, just two chapters after this, 00:10:29.799 --> 00:10:34.000 we see David at his very worst in the scenario with Bathsheba. 00:10:35.099 --> 00:10:37.860 But here, in chapter 9, 00:10:37.860 --> 00:10:41.180 we see David at his very best. 00:10:44.259 --> 00:10:49.220 This man who is to be the representative of God among his people, 00:10:49.300 --> 00:10:52.139 who is to point us forward to a greater king, 00:10:52.860 --> 00:10:55.440 whom God is blessing in every imaginable way, 00:10:56.080 --> 00:10:57.899 we can argue that in this moment, 00:10:58.759 --> 00:11:04.039 he does it best as God's chosen. 00:11:04.039 --> 00:11:10.559 So that if we want to see a glimpse of God's loving kindness, 00:11:11.159 --> 00:11:14.099 we can see it here in 2 Samuel 9. 00:11:16.259 --> 00:11:22.319 If you What are we supposed to understand? 00:12:07.299 --> 00:12:10.119 First thing I want you to see here is the king's search. 00:12:10.679 --> 00:12:11.939 The king's search. 00:12:12.619 --> 00:12:14.399 Let's just read verses 1 through 4 again. 00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:44.379 David said, 00:12:44.399 --> 00:13:06.240 Well, again, in the United States, we enjoy the peaceful transfer of power, typically, 00:13:06.459 --> 00:13:09.860 whenever one presidential administration transitions to another. 00:13:09.860 --> 00:13:13.139 Historically speaking, that is quite unusual. 00:13:13.480 --> 00:13:14.279 You understand that. 00:13:15.580 --> 00:13:19.240 In the ancient Near East, whenever a king overtook another, 00:13:20.039 --> 00:13:26.279 his first step was eliminating every potential threat to his throne, 00:13:26.279 --> 00:13:33.579 which meant hunting down and killing the previous king's family, 00:13:34.500 --> 00:13:35.919 especially his children. 00:13:37.659 --> 00:13:42.699 He would find his advisors, and he would eliminate them as well. 00:13:43.120 --> 00:13:51.159 Anyone who had a serious loyalty to the previous regime would be imprisoned or killed. 00:13:51.159 --> 00:13:56.459 Anyone who might foment some kind of insurrection in the name of the previous king. 00:13:56.899 --> 00:14:00.120 The cultural expectation for David, 00:14:01.079 --> 00:14:01.819 cultural, 00:14:02.539 --> 00:14:07.860 was that he would kill the entire house of Saul. 00:14:07.860 --> 00:14:14.980 And it is this expectation that overshadows this entire scene, 00:14:15.080 --> 00:14:16.139 this entire narrative, 00:14:16.639 --> 00:14:18.659 is founded upon that premise 00:14:18.659 --> 00:14:21.180 that what was expected of David 00:14:21.180 --> 00:14:28.240 is that in his search for whoever remains of Saul's family and Saul's lineage would be eliminated. 00:14:28.240 --> 00:14:33.500 And it's magnified by the fact that in the chapters leading up to it, 00:14:33.560 --> 00:14:35.039 there's this constant war, 00:14:35.080 --> 00:14:40.200 even after Saul's death between David and Saul's loyalists. 00:14:40.960 --> 00:14:45.700 So when David asked if anyone from Saul's family was still alive, 00:14:46.039 --> 00:14:48.240 the expectation is that he's asking 00:14:48.240 --> 00:14:54.080 so that he might finish off any remaining threat to his own throne. 00:14:54.080 --> 00:14:57.080 And surprisingly, 00:14:58.060 --> 00:15:02.180 David searched for Saul's remaining relatives, 00:15:02.280 --> 00:15:03.220 not to kill them, 00:15:04.259 --> 00:15:06.160 but to show him kindness. 00:15:08.620 --> 00:15:10.780 This word for kindness, 00:15:11.379 --> 00:15:12.060 chesed, 00:15:12.420 --> 00:15:16.740 it's often translated as mercy or steadfast love. 00:15:17.940 --> 00:15:23.160 It refers to extraordinary kindness that isn't self-seeking. 00:15:23.159 --> 00:15:27.139 It arises from personal affection and purity and goodness. 00:15:28.819 --> 00:15:31.500 John Woodhouse defines it this way, 00:15:32.179 --> 00:15:36.539 it is mercy and kindness shown toward one in need 00:15:36.539 --> 00:15:40.519 by one with the power to help, 00:15:41.360 --> 00:15:46.659 but not necessarily with any obligation to help. 00:15:47.120 --> 00:15:51.779 That's what's being communicated by this language here. 00:15:51.779 --> 00:15:54.759 There's three things about David's kindness, 00:15:54.959 --> 00:15:57.980 his search to show kindness that I think sticks out here 00:15:57.980 --> 00:15:59.079 that would be good for us to know. 00:15:59.559 --> 00:16:02.019 First, his kindness was covenantal. 00:16:02.959 --> 00:16:04.259 His kindness was covenantal. 00:16:05.399 --> 00:16:07.559 He wasn't looking for political advantage, 00:16:07.659 --> 00:16:09.459 he wasn't looking for personal praise. 00:16:10.100 --> 00:16:11.759 His search to show kindness 00:16:11.759 --> 00:16:15.620 was motivated by covenantal love. 00:16:15.620 --> 00:16:17.620 Specifically, 00:16:17.620 --> 00:16:18.179 specifically, 00:16:18.679 --> 00:16:21.240 over the covenant that he made with Jonathan, 00:16:21.440 --> 00:16:23.419 who was not only Saul's son 00:16:23.419 --> 00:16:25.539 and next in line for the throne 00:16:25.539 --> 00:16:27.019 according to Saul's lineage, 00:16:27.240 --> 00:16:28.659 but he was David's best friend. 00:16:30.440 --> 00:16:32.539 David sought someone to bless 00:16:32.539 --> 00:16:34.820 out of his deep, 00:16:35.960 --> 00:16:37.820 covenantal faithfulness 00:16:37.820 --> 00:16:40.860 and love for Jonathan. 00:16:42.640 --> 00:16:44.440 We remember that covenant 00:16:44.440 --> 00:16:46.480 from 1 Samuel chapter 20. 00:16:46.600 --> 00:16:47.980 Let me just read it to
