I died, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and Hades. 00:00:29.899 --> 00:00:41.460 Well, this revelation that came to John, as he tells us himself here in verse 9, came to him when he was in the Isle of Patmos. 00:00:42.479 --> 00:00:49.399 Patmos was a place that the Roman authorities at the time used as a penal colony. 00:00:51.019 --> 00:00:56.899 They used to send people there who they regarded as troublemakers or potential troublemakers, 00:00:56.899 --> 00:01:05.620 and that's how they regarded some of the leading figures in the church as well at times during the times of the Roman Empire. 00:01:05.759 --> 00:01:20.799 And he tells us he was here in verse 9 in the Isle of Patmos for the patient endurance and tribulation of Jesus. 00:01:20.799 --> 00:01:27.979 He was there because he was regarded as a threat to the authority of the empire. 00:01:28.840 --> 00:01:32.000 He was sent to the Isle of Patmos to be banished there. 00:01:32.620 --> 00:01:36.120 It was an island which was very difficult to escape from. 00:01:36.979 --> 00:01:42.239 In other words, he was one of those persecuted for his role in the church, 00:01:42.599 --> 00:01:47.259 for his leadership in the church, for his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:01:47.260 --> 00:01:58.280 And it's interesting, he calls himself their brother and partner in tribulation and the kingdom and patient endurance that are in Jesus. 00:01:58.500 --> 00:02:02.520 Now, that obviously would be greatly encouraging to those that he was writing to, 00:02:02.620 --> 00:02:08.259 because it's obvious going through the book of the Revelation that he was writing to people who knew what persecution was. 00:02:09.719 --> 00:02:15.219 And he was writing to encourage them, so he describes himself as being at one with them. 00:02:15.219 --> 00:02:20.439 And he's saying to them, although I'm an apostle, I'm in the same situation as you are. 00:02:21.219 --> 00:02:23.020 I haven't escaped the persecutions. 00:02:23.139 --> 00:02:25.960 I'm writing to you from the Isle of Patmos. 00:02:26.919 --> 00:02:31.340 And he says he was in the Spirit on the Lord's Day, the first day of the week. 00:02:32.439 --> 00:02:33.780 He was in the Spirit. 00:02:33.919 --> 00:02:37.680 That means he was under the direction of the Holy Spirit. 00:02:38.020 --> 00:02:41.280 That doesn't mean he was in an ecstasy where he didn't know what he was doing. 00:02:41.280 --> 00:02:49.420 But he was under the control, under the inspiration, and under the government or control of the Holy Spirit. 00:02:49.780 --> 00:02:55.199 So, in other words, what he's writing afterwards, the interpretation of the things that he saw and heard, 00:02:55.639 --> 00:02:58.300 they came to him because of the teaching of the Holy Spirit. 00:02:58.420 --> 00:03:01.680 He was under that Holy Spirit's influence at the time. 00:03:02.060 --> 00:03:04.680 He was there in the Lord's Day in the Spirit. resurrection of Christ from the dead, as it still is for us. 00:03:17.640 --> 00:03:19.580 This is what the Lord's Day is for us today. 00:03:20.020 --> 00:03:24.200 We are here today celebrating the fact that Christ is risen from the dead, 00:03:24.580 --> 00:03:27.360 ascended to glory, as we've been singing in Psalm 68. 00:03:27.760 --> 00:03:31.140 He ascended up on high and led captivity captive. 00:03:31.139 --> 00:03:36.799 He assumed his place on the throne of heaven, on the throne of the universe, 00:03:37.479 --> 00:03:43.199 presiding over all his enemies, including, as we'll see here, death as well. 00:03:44.339 --> 00:03:47.779 And that's important in the context of the book of the Revelation. 00:03:48.879 --> 00:03:52.419 It's probably a book that most of us don't read too often, 00:03:52.419 --> 00:03:57.159 and a book that has many things in it that are difficult to understand 00:03:57.159 --> 00:04:01.699 and difficult even to present by way of setting out its teaching. 00:04:02.500 --> 00:04:07.000 And it's quite common and understandable that people avoid the book of the Revelation, 00:04:07.419 --> 00:04:09.639 you know, so as not to go into it too deeply, 00:04:09.699 --> 00:04:12.560 because it is, in parts, very difficult to understand, 00:04:12.699 --> 00:04:14.779 even for ourselves who preach the Word of God. 00:04:15.039 --> 00:04:16.759 But it's important that we realize, 00:04:16.759 --> 00:04:19.360 what is the purpose of the book of the Revelation? 00:04:19.360 --> 00:04:23.580 What is the main thread of teaching running through the book of the Revelation? 00:04:23.960 --> 00:04:26.040 It is the triumph of Jesus. 00:04:27.360 --> 00:04:32.139 It is the supremacy of Jesus over all the powers that are in the universe, 00:04:32.500 --> 00:04:34.759 including the power of the devil and his angels, 00:04:35.060 --> 00:04:36.319 the powers of evil. 00:04:36.699 --> 00:04:39.400 This thread right through the book of the Revelation says, 00:04:39.860 --> 00:04:41.400 Jesus is King. 00:04:42.680 --> 00:04:44.100 Jesus is Lord. 00:04:45.080 --> 00:04:48.300 There is no power like the power of the Lord. 00:04:48.300 --> 00:04:51.160 There is no authority like the authority of the Lord. 00:04:51.480 --> 00:04:53.560 And the book of the Revelation is a book, 00:04:54.120 --> 00:04:57.680 however difficult passages in it are to understand, 00:04:58.120 --> 00:05:01.500 it's clear right through that this is the thread of teaching. 00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:05.480 We have a Savior who rules the world. 00:05:06.800 --> 00:05:08.759 We have a Savior who is King, 00:05:08.980 --> 00:05:10.960 not just of time, but of eternity. 00:05:10.959 --> 00:05:15.079 We have a Savior who will always be King, 00:05:15.819 --> 00:05:18.439 who will never relinquish his kingship, 00:05:19.039 --> 00:05:24.079 who will never be defeated in carrying out his kingship. 00:05:25.519 --> 00:05:27.500 Today we're worshipping this King. 00:05:28.659 --> 00:05:30.560 We're worshipping the one about whom 00:05:30.560 --> 00:05:32.959 the book of Revelation is 00:05:32.959 --> 00:05:35.939 and reveals his supremacy. 00:05:35.939 --> 00:05:41.600 So these are the things he says that he heard and saw. 00:05:42.980 --> 00:05:46.100 So let's look more closely at verses 17 and 18, 00:05:46.379 --> 00:05:48.379 17 to 18 especially. 00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:50.720 When I saw him, 00:05:50.759 --> 00:05:56.620 he describes what he saw there in the passage there 00:05:56.620 --> 00:05:57.879 from verse 12, 00:05:58.319 --> 00:05:59.360 when he turned to see. 00:05:59.360 --> 00:05:59.840 And in fact, 00:06:00.220 --> 00:06:02.240 from verse 12 down to 16, 00:06:02.580 --> 00:06:06.540 that's actually the longest description of Jesus 00:06:06.540 --> 00:06:08.580 that you have in the whole Bible. 00:06:09.860 --> 00:06:12.720 It's a precise description of Jesus. 00:06:12.780 --> 00:06:15.060 All these words describe the person of Jesus 00:06:15.060 --> 00:06:16.240 and where he is. 00:06:17.000 --> 00:06:20.180 And it's the longest uninterrupted description 00:06:20.180 --> 00:06:21.360 of Jesus in the 00:06:26.000 --> 00:06:28.199 something a bit like in Acts chapter 9, 00:06:28.199 --> 00:06:29.860 when Paul was on the way to, 00:06:29.939 --> 00:06:33.180 Saul was on the way to Damascus 00:06:33.180 --> 00:06:35.599 when he was carrying certain messages, 00:06:35.839 --> 00:06:38.920 having been for years an opponent of Jesus. 00:06:39.399 --> 00:06:41.120 He met the risen Jesus. 00:06:41.300 --> 00:06:44.039 Jesus came into his path 00:06:44.039 --> 00:06:45.419 and interrupted his progress 00:06:45.419 --> 00:06:46.419 and revealed himself. 00:06:47.099 --> 00:06:48.599 Glory is light from heaven, 00:06:48.699 --> 00:06:50.219 the same Jesus here 00:06:50.219 --> 00:06:52.620 that you find here in Revelation. 00:06:53.839 --> 00:06:55.539 And what John is telling us is, 00:06:55.540 --> 00:06:56.780 when I saw him, 00:06:57.500 --> 00:07:00.200 I fell at his feet as though dead. 00:07:01.200 --> 00:07:02.160 He didn't say, 00:07:02.379 --> 00:07:03.680 Lord, it's 00:07:53.199 and John here, 00:07:53.579 --> 00:07:56.259 the apostle who knew Jesus very well, 00:07:57.160 --> 00:07:59.319 fell at his feet as though dead. 00:08:00.079 --> 00:08:02.560 It was such 00:08:16.240 Now, John knew Jesus very well. 00:08:17.600 --> 00:08:19.720 John knew Jesus in his time on earth. 00:08:19.920 --> 00:08:20.960 He was one of his disciples. 00:08:21.960 --> 00:08:24.260 He was one of the closest to Jesus 00:08:24.260 --> 00:08:25.480 in his walk with him 00:08:25.480 --> 00:08:28.340 while Jesus was with the disciples in this world. 00:08:29.160 -->
