Paul's intent for Philippi 00:04:58.360 --> 00:05:01.580 to know the joy of partnering together, 00:05:01.580 --> 00:05:06.860 which is the joy that exists when we link arms with each other for the sake of the gospel. 00:05:07.620 --> 00:05:12.220 So this morning, I want to begin by looking at Paul's opening to the Philippians in verses one through two. 00:05:12.540 --> 00:05:18.520 And just as 00:05:41.939 Okay. 00:05:42.339 --> 00:05:45.719 I want to begin by looking at Paul's opening to the Philippians verses one through two. 00:05:45.720 --> 00:05:51.540 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, 00:05:51.640 --> 00:05:58.240 together with the overseers and deacons, grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:05:58.680 --> 00:06:01.660 You know, Paul is beginning this letter like we'd expect most letters to begin. 00:06:01.820 --> 00:06:04.120 He says who it's to and who it's from. 00:06:04.620 --> 00:06:08.620 We see that Paul and Timothy are identified as the authors of this letter. 00:06:08.740 --> 00:06:10.620 And he says an interesting phrase. 00:06:10.700 --> 00:06:13.960 He says they are servants of Christ Jesus. 00:06:13.959 --> 00:06:16.959 And a better way to read this, if you're reading this in a different translation, 00:06:17.259 --> 00:06:20.839 might be to replace the word servant with the word slave. 00:06:21.419 --> 00:06:22.379 It might read like this. 00:06:22.439 --> 00:06:26.599 Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus. 00:06:26.719 --> 00:06:29.479 And this is going to be an important theme that we're going to develop in just a second. 00:06:30.319 --> 00:06:32.519 Verse one also tells us who this letter is to, though. 00:06:33.479 --> 00:06:37.799 To all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi, 00:06:38.560 --> 00:06:41.579 together with the spiritual leaders of the church. 00:06:41.579 --> 00:06:46.159 And it's in verse two that Paul is issuing his own customary greeting. 00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:52.079 He says, grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:06:52.779 --> 00:06:55.399 You know, but as I reflect on the opening of this letter, 00:06:55.519 --> 00:07:00.979 I think of Paul's opening statements to this growing Roman colony as anything but customary. 00:07:01.060 --> 00:07:03.180 These people have likely heard of Paul's situation. 00:07:03.620 --> 00:07:05.039 He's under house arrest. 00:07:05.040 --> 00:07:07.420 He's awaiting trial in Rome. 00:07:07.560 --> 00:07:11.819 And he's unsure of what the future holds for himself. 00:07:12.540 --> 00:07:18.360 And later on in the letter, Paul actually thanks them for their continued partnership in the gospel. 00:07:18.600 --> 00:07:21.700 Because many have given generously to support Paul's ministry. 00:07:22.320 --> 00:07:26.820 And they've decided to stick with him when others kind of jump ship for fear of their lives. 00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:31.300 And so Paul uses what I would like to just call binding words. 00:07:31.300 --> 00:07:35.060 These are words that hold this introduction together. 00:07:35.280 --> 00:07:37.860 And he uses a unique combination of words. 00:07:37.939 --> 00:07:42.319 He says, slaves of Christ Jesus and God's holy people. 00:07:42.840 --> 00:07:47.540 And I think these are very specific words regarding the tone of this letter. 00:07:48.120 --> 00:07:51.759 And as we look at Philippians, here's how I'd like for you to think about this. 00:07:52.300 --> 00:07:55.540 This whole letter is framed around God, 00:07:55.620 --> 00:07:59.400 who is in control of not only Paul and his future-defining circumstances, 00:07:59.399 --> 00:08:05.719 but God is ultimately in control of this local community of believers in Philippi, 00:08:05.819 --> 00:08:09.279 who have been made holy by the finished work of Jesus. 00:08:09.459 --> 00:08:13.620 And so when Paul is referring to himself as a slave into this church as God's holy people, 00:08:14.039 --> 00:08:19.639 he's reminding his audience of the larger framework of God's redemptive narrative. 00:08:20.739 --> 00:08:26.919 He calls himself a slave because he knows that slaves are to be owned by a master. 00:08:26.920 --> 00:08:34.700 And Paul refers to them as God's holy people because he knows it was God who took them out of their enslavement to sin, 00:08:34.860 --> 00:08:37.779 who set them apart, which is what being holy is. 00:08:38.180 --> 00:08:41.920 And he made them one with himself through Jesus Christ. 00:08:42.700 --> 00:08:47.700 And so I just think like one of the things we have to mention is like anytime we read and we interpret 00:08:47.700 --> 00:08:52.340 and we rest in these words of scriptures in Philippians, 00:08:52.340 --> 00:08:55.460 like Philippians carries with it its own degree of difficulty, 00:08:55.460 --> 00:08:59.600 especially in how we interpret the opening of this letter. 00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:03.160 You know, when Paul calls himself a slave of Christ, 00:09:03.200 --> 00:09:06.600 there's a natural tendency to make that slightly uncomfortable, 00:09:06.600 --> 00:09:07.379 which is understandable. 00:09:07.379 --> 00:09:10.639 We've got some pretty awful connotations around the idea of slavery. 00:09:10.820 --> 00:09:17.400 But Paul's usage of the word slave is critical in how we're going to understand 00:09:17.399 --> 00:09:23.319 his own understanding of the gospel and how that develops in our own hearts and lives. 00:09:23.399 --> 00:09:25.360 I want you to take Romans 6.22, for example. 00:09:26.019 --> 00:09:28.980 But now that you've been set free from sin, have become slaves of God. 00:09:29.179 --> 00:09:30.519 This is what Paul writes elsewhere. 00:09:31.059 --> 00:09:35.819 The benefit you reap leads to holiness and the result is eternal life. 00:09:36.579 --> 00:09:39.399 And so when Paul says slave, 00:09:39.939 --> 00:09:43.720 he's talking about a complete change of ownership. 00:09:43.720 --> 00:09:50.779 And so what he's doing is he's comparing a life controlled by sin to a life controlled by Jesus. 00:09:51.899 --> 00:09:57.420 And at that point that Paul is making in relationship to Jesus is that we've been rescued from a former way of life. 00:09:57.840 --> 00:10:02.080 Formerly we were held, we're bound in chains by the nature of sin, 00:10:02.139 --> 00:10:05.220 but we've been freed by the person and work of Jesus. 00:10:05.420 --> 00:10:10.080 Jesus has purchased us from the malevolent master of sin, 00:10:10.080 --> 00:10:15.280 and he's now transferred our ownership into the family of God in which we've received a new identity. 00:10:15.740 --> 00:10:17.420 Scholar Grant Osborne, he put it like this. 00:10:17.460 --> 00:10:17.740 He says, 00:10:18.160 --> 00:10:23.840 We exchanged an evil, abusive taskmaster, which is the nature of sin, 00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:30.480 for a loving, caring master who watches over and protects us. 00:10:30.540 --> 00:10:33.139 This is the framework of our identity. 00:10:33.360 --> 00:10:37.120 This is the redemptive narrative that God is playing out in the life of the church 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:38.460 and in the life of the world. 00:10:38.460 --> 00:10:43.740 There are others who do not know Christ, who are held in slavery by sin, 00:10:44.160 --> 00:10:48.860 and Christ Jesus is freeing them for the sake of himself in the message of the gospel. 00:10:49.080 --> 00:10:54.639 And there is true freedom to be found in tying ourselves in our futures and our lives, 00:10:55.120 --> 00:10:57.440 binding ourselves to the finished work of Jesus. 00:10:57.960 --> 00:11:00.379 So what Paul is doing is he's just giving us language 00:11:00.379 --> 00:11:03.420 for the thing that we've actually experienced in light of the gospel. 00:11:03.419 --> 00:11:06.639 And so what he does at the beginning in verse 2, 00:11:06.719 --> 00:11:09.319 he uses two words in the extension of his greeting 00:11:09.319 --> 00:11:14.079 that gives credence to what it is that we have experienced through Christ. 00:11:14.439 --> 00:11:18.000 In verse 2, Paul uses the word grace and peace. 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:22.719 Now these are like super like Christian words that you're all familiar with. 00:11:22.720 --> 00:11:28.120 These words though should be treated as gifts as we're reading through Philippians 00:11:28.120 --> 00:11:33.860 that we've received something in the gospel as a result of a change of ownership. 00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:36.060 00:12:40.019 And then this beautiful robust sentence. 00:12:40.379 --> 00:12:42.639 But His mercy is more. 00:12:42.639 --> 00:12:47.220 Like we have received the gift of God's grace through Jesus Christ. 00:12:47.759 --> 00:12:49.299 We did not get what we deserved. 00:12:50.159 --> 00:12:54.100 Now, whereas peace in this opening part of the letter is a very different word. 00:12:54.860 --> sin. 00:13:11.540 --> 00:13:14.139 But in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says this sentence. 00:13:14.259 --> 00:13:16.540 He says, blessed are the peacemakers. 00:13:16.960 --> 00:13:20.820 I don't know what like picture you should get in your mind when you read this. 00:13:21.580 --> 00:13:28.980 But typically the idea of a peacemaker is someone who stands with their arms raised between two warring parties. 00:13:28.980 --> 00:13:37.800 He's willing to absorb the full degree of conflict on both ends as a result of separating two parties at war with each other. 00:13:38.800 --> 00:13:40.940 And this is what Jesus has done. 00:13:41.340 --> 00:13:42.639 Paul writes in Romans 5.1. 00:13:42.700 --> 00:13:49.580 He says, therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:13:49.980 --> 00:13:53.180 Jesus has stood in the gap from what sin had created. 00:13:53.179 --> 00:13:57.639 In opposition to what God wanted to put the world back to rights through himself. 00:13:58.039 --> 00:14:01.859 And Christ Jesus himself has made a way. 00:14:02.219 --> 00:14:04.639 He has made peace where there was no other peace to be made. 00:14:05.459 --> 00:14:13.379 And so Paul's introductory framework for Philippians places us in the middle of the story of God's redemption. 00:14:14.099 --> 00:14:19.159 That all that we have become in the gospel is because Jesus has made a way back to God. 00:14:19.279 --> 00:14:22.120 And we could not have earned it even if we wanted to. 00:14:23.179 --> 00:14:33.679 So these are some simple, like, core truths that the Holy Spirit is using to unite believers together as God's holy people. 00:14:33.979 --> 00:14:37.519 And, like, this is, like, just a base layer for your the things that you've learned recently in the last couple weeks is the prayer of come Holy Spirit. 00:14:48.759 --> 00:14:57.019 And one of the things that the Holy Spirit exists to do is to remind us of the finished work of Jesus effectively at work in our lives. 00:14:57.120 --> 00:14:59.480 Not that the Holy Spirit is coming from a different place. 00:14:59.559 --> 00:15:05.500 But to say, yes, as believers we have received the sign and the seal of what God has done. 00:15:05.620 --> 00:15:08.179 And he has rested it on the life of the believer. 00:15:08.379 --> 00:15:14.860 And the our shared life and experience within the context of the Christian community, our constant encouragement, like a constant encouragement, that God is doing what he said he would do through Jesus. Like, the world, the devil, the forces of darkness, they're under no threat by a divided and isolated Christian community whose only hope is to hold themselves together by their own bootstraps. worth linking arms with these brothers. 00:27:23.379 --> 00:27:28.939 And so we could keep each other encouraged for the task ahead of bringing the gospel to all of Northern California. 00:27:28.939 --> 00:27:31.859 So that all might know that Jesus Christ is Lord. 00:27:31.859 --> 00:27:40.979 And so when believers are partnered together through the gospel, it changes the way not only that they interact, but it changes the way that they think and they pray for one another. 00:27:41.139 --> 00:27:42.859 Our prayers are no longer self-seeking. 00:27:43.240 --> 00:27:44.759 They are outward He says, this is my prayer. 00:27:53.959 --> 00:27:57.139 And the prayer that Paul prays for these people is that their love would grow. 00:27:57.140 --> 00:28:02.660 Paul's prayer is, I think, one of the sweetest prayers among gospel friends. 00:28:03.000 --> 00:28:09.980 He prays that their love would grow and grow and grow until Jesus is finally done with the work that he started. 00:28:10.040
