00:00:25.219 Now, nothing distinct is said about Israel's evil deeds. 00:00:25.219 --> 00:00:31.039 If we're following the context of the book, it has something to do with idolatry, no doubt. 00:00:31.199 --> 00:00:32.859 Everything else always did. 00:00:33.460 --> 00:00:36.179 It's not explicitly stated, but that's probably what's happening. 00:00:36.719 --> 00:00:40.960 But God does identify the instrument of his judgment, 00:00:41.719 --> 00:00:45.679 and it was the nation of Philistia, or the Philistines. 00:00:46.159 --> 00:00:53.519 And the length of time which they ruled about that now. 00:01:20.799 --> 00:01:25.539 Now, this narrative doesn't take us to the end of Philistine oppression. 00:01:25.920 --> 00:01:35.060 It just records simply God's first stage in his plan of defeating them and delivering his people from them. 00:01:35.599 --> 00:01:37.959 So that's the familiar pattern right from the very beginning. 00:01:38.400 --> 00:01:39.459 Israel is idolatrous. 00:01:39.579 --> 00:01:41.859 They've sinned against the Lord, and God has disciplined. 00:01:42.019 --> 00:01:47.379 And this time, he's disciplining them with the Philistines over the very uncommon for us to treat God with that kind of contempt. 00:03:22.620 --> 00:03:24.060 Things don't go our way. 00:03:24.060 --> 00:03:26.240 We don't like what he says. 00:03:26.560 --> some things we need to remember about that exchange. 00:03:35.780 --> 00:03:42.699 First, Israel's display of repentance in chapter 10 was not genuine repentance. 00:03:43.520 --> 00:03:45.300 They there eventually does come a time for God's discipline to be active. 00:04:43.360 --> 00:04:51.920 God eventually does discipline his people, allowing the consequences of their sins to run their 00:05:56.899 His love and his mercy back in that story still abounded. 00:05:56.899 --> 00:06:02.859 He still saved them from the Ammonites, who were the enemies they were dealing with at that point. they have to do with Samson's determination 00:11:38.559 --> 00:11:40.840 to be God's instrument of salvation. 00:11:41.240 --> 00:11:45.620 As you will find as we journey through this story next Sunday in particular, 00:11:46.699 --> 00:11:49.159 Samson quite enjoyed the Philistine life. 00:11:49.159 --> 00:12:03.079 The entire Samson narrative is not about those things. 00:12:03.799 --> 00:12:09.059 It is about God's relentless grace and mercy. 00:12:09.059 --> 00:12:11.819 That's what this story is about. 00:12:13.279 --> 00:12:16.979 Israel may not have been concerned about God's 00:13:34.299 And the author's aim for that is simple. 00:13:35.459 --> 00:13:40.500 He's showing us that Samson was God's man 00:13:40.500 --> 00:13:44.559 and God's plan from the very beginning. 00:13:46.159 --> 00:13:50.879 Sometimes we get this idea that when these stories unfold in the Bible, 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:52.439 whether it's in Judges or in another place, 00:13:52.440 --> 00:13:56.020 sometimes there is a theory that even looks at Jesus this way, 00:13:56.320 --> 00:14:01.380 that what happens when God works is kind of like divine crisis management, 00:14:01.380 --> 00:14:05.380 that the Lord kind of lets us off on a leash, 00:14:05.780 --> 00:14:07.660 and when things get really bad, 00:14:07.720 --> 00:14:09.660 he just kind of has to reel us back in, 00:14:09.700 --> 00:14:12.300 and he has to come up with some kind of way in that moment 00:14:12.300 --> 00:14:14.500 to figure things out and help us. 00:14:14.500 --> 00:14:17.720 That is not at all the way that God works. 00:14:19.399 --> 00:14:20.500 Samson proves it. 00:14:23.000 --> 00:14:26.620 Before Samson ever had a moment to disobey the vow, 00:14:26.720 --> 00:14:29.879 before he where you had Samson carrying the massive gates 00:15:47.659 --> 00:15:48.720 from the one thing. 00:15:48.879 --> 00:15:49.940 And what you knew of Samson 00:15:49.940 --> 00:15:51.440 was these massive feats of strength. 00:15:51.639 --> 00:15:54.740 I always imagined him like my favorite WCW wrestler, 00:15:54.940 --> 00:15:56.919 like Hulk Hogan or whatever. 00:15:57.419 --> 00:15:58.879 That's how we think of Samson. 00:15:59.200 --> 00:16:00.500 This story's not about Samson. 00:16:01.500 --> 00:16:02.340 It's not what it's about. 00:16:02.340 --> 00:16:04.399 It's not about Manoah 00:24:44.800 --> 00:24:45.880 That's what the vow was about. 00:24:45.880 --> 00:24:56.200 Now, before we move on, consider for a moment why God announced Samson's birth, but not any of the other
