And that's a good reason. 00:03:12.739 --> 00:03:18.699 It's a very positive thing for us to think about why it is that we don't fit in, 00:03:18.799 --> 00:03:26.180 why there is a certain amount of earthly awkwardness to Christian faithfulness. 00:03:26.479 --> 00:03:30.599 Because you are very much the old metaphor of the, you know, 00:03:30.659 --> 00:03:33.319 you're the fish swimming against the current. 00:03:33.319 --> 00:03:39.780 You are the person who is standing out because you're the peculiar one in the situation. 00:03:40.419 --> 00:03:41.299 And that's okay. 00:03:41.879 --> 00:03:44.579 The early church, they felt this. 00:03:44.659 --> 00:03:46.159 They felt this culturally. 00:03:46.620 --> 00:03:49.379 They felt this amongst their families oftentimes, 00:03:49.740 --> 00:03:52.759 always socially, very often politically, 00:03:53.240 --> 00:03:56.319 when it came to the empire, when it came to other religions, 00:03:56.519 --> 00:03:59.740 when it came to just the business practices of the day. 00:04:00.340 --> 00:04:01.859 They didn't feel like they fit in. 00:04:01.860 --> 00:04:03.180 And that's a good thing. 00:04:03.600 --> 00:04:07.160 And so Peter writes to them in this kind of manner. 00:04:07.520 --> 00:04:12.400 In fact, if I can just ask you to look not at chapter 2 of 1 Peter, 00:04:12.500 --> 00:04:14.500 but go ahead and look at chapter 1, 00:04:14.960 --> 00:04:18.540 and see how it is that he opens up this passage, 00:04:19.040 --> 00:04:20.120 opens up this letter. 00:04:20.620 --> 00:04:20.980 He says, 00:04:20.980 --> 00:04:21.439 Peter, 00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:21.439 00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:21.439 00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:27.840 an apostle of Jesus Christ to the pilgrims of the dispersion. 00:04:27.920 --> 00:04:30.520 And then he names all of these other places. 00:04:30.920 --> 00:04:38.480 I mean, he launches with this idea that we're all pilgrims in a foreign land. 00:04:39.020 --> 00:04:43.100 And then the verse, I'm going to read in just a second verses 4 through 10. 00:04:43.100 --> 00:04:48.100 But look there in chapter 2, verse 11, and he says, 00:04:48.240 --> 00:04:55.439 Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, essentially as people that are foreigners. 00:04:55.640 --> 00:05:00.220 And you'll remember that the Apostle Paul, in some of his writings in the New Testament, 00:05:00.760 --> 00:05:04.560 he tells us that we are ambassadors for Christ. 00:05:04.980 --> 00:05:08.820 It is, you're not, you don't belong here any longer. 00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:11.160 Your citizenship is with another kingdom. 00:05:11.160 --> 00:05:13.260 You're from another place now. 00:05:13.520 --> 00:05:16.960 You belong to something else and something greater. 00:05:17.600 --> 00:05:20.740 And so, --> 00:07:58.319 You get to the end of every passage and you say, what an incredible passage. 00:07:58.319 --> 00:08:02.680 Knowing that every passage you could read in scripture is incredible. 00:08:03.159 --> 00:08:06.560 And so I think it is always appropriate after we've read the scripture. 00:08:06.699 --> 00:08:07.839 Let's pause for a moment. 00:08:08.519 --> 00:08:15.519 Let me guide us in just another moment of prayer and ask God to help us to hear clearly from his spirit. 00:08:15.519 --> 00:08:19.299 As to what he wants to teach and to move in our hearts. 00:08:19.319 --> 00:08:21.120 How he wants to move in each one of us today. 00:08:21.439 --> 00:08:21.979 Pray with me. 00:08:22.560 --> 00:08:24.799 Father, we come to you humbly. 00:08:25.079 --> 00:08:32.279 declined. 00:10:04.059 --> 00:10:07.100 I am not a person who should be around power tools. 00:10:07.580 --> 00:10:13.699 If you need something fixed at your house, you call me and I'll get you in sometimes I have to dig a little deeper to get to it. 00:10:23.399 --> 00:10:36.220 But I got to it of understanding that in this old, ancient world, the idea of a key stone is critical for the construction of an entire building. 00:10:36.220 --> 00:10:46.340 It is the one piece of foundation that they make sure is plumb, that they make sure is straight on all sides, that is going to set the foundation. 00:10:46.540 --> 00:10:51.540 It's going to set the stage so that everything is level and everything is secure. 00:10:51.539 --> 00:10:58.419 And without the key cornerstone, without that foundational stone, nothing else matters. 00:10:58.579 --> 00:11:00.319 The structure is not going to happen. 00:11:00.819 --> 00:11:05.419 And the same is true for us as an individual, as a believer. 00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:08.399 And it's also true of us as congregations. 00:11:08.399 --> 00:11:14.679 That if we don't have that key cornerstone of Christ as our foundational rock, nothing else --> 00:11:34.000 But if we will utilize Christ as that key cornerstone, and we keep going back to the idea of, 00:11:34.000 --> 00:11:37.539 this is the stone that the rest of the world has rejected. 00:11:38.039 --> 00:11:40.340 Therefore, look at how the world is falling apart. 00:11:40.539 --> 00:11:42.120 Look at the shakiness. 00:11:42.379 --> 00:11:44.720 Look at the unsettled nature of the world. 00:11:44.980 --> 00:11:50.539 It's because they've not chosen Christ as the foundational cornerstone. 00:11:50.539 --> 00:11:53.039 They're trying to build on all sorts of other things. 00:11:53.379 --> 00:11:58.600 Financial security, moral superiority, immoral superiority. 00:11:58.600 --> 00:12:04.060 They're trying to base it on their own wit, their own wisdom, their own decision making. 00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:11.120 But boy, we've got to turn a mirror on ourselves as individuals and as groups and as congregations 00:12:11.120 --> 00:12:12.700 of, well, what are we doing? 00:12:12.940 --> 00:12:16.960 Are we ensuring day after day after day, year after year after year, 00:12:16.960 --> 00:12:24.840 are we willing to come under, I'll just say, a ruthless kind of observation of our own lives? 00:12:24.840 --> 00:12:31.560 That we would be willing to have that kind of assessment of what am I building my life on? 00:12:32.320 --> 00:12:33.519 And you know what? 00:12:33.560 --> 00:12:39.720 Oftentimes, there's a really easy way for you to go through that kind of assessment of your life, 00:12:39.860 --> 00:12:43.280 and that is look at your bank account and your calendar. 00:12:43.879 --> 00:12:46.080 And I don't just mean like a work calendar. 00:12:46.340 --> 00:12:49.960 I mean, really think about what is it that I spend all of my resources on, so far removed from a priority, 00:13:00.759 --> 00:13:05.340 then we're not building our lives on Christ as the cornerstone. 00:13:05.980 --> 00:13:09.919 And Peter gives this great warning that the people, 00:13:11.299 --> 00:13:14.019 not only is Jesus not their cornerstone, 00:13:14.340 --> 00:13:16.860 but he has become an offense, 00:13:17.179 --> 00:13:19.439 and he is something that they're just stumbling over. 00:13:19.440 --> 00:13:23.260 And you and I need to come under that question of, 00:13:23.460 --> 00:13:25.400 what is it that I'm building my life on? 00:13:26.060 -->
