00:04:20.240 --> 00:04:23.340 it might not be so obvious, but the author is Luke, 00:04:24.319 --> 00:04:25.879 under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. 00:04:26.620 --> 00:04:30.079 And the Gospel of Luke is really just book 1 of a lengthier version 00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:33.040 of what he was writing to a man named Theopolis. 00:04:33.040 --> 00:04:36.480 Book 2 is the Acts of the Apostles. 00:04:36.480 --> 00:04:43.879 And so this morning, we are finishing up the end of book 1 or part 1 of this lengthy book. 00:04:43.879 --> 00:04:50.899 And there in chapter 1, if you'd follow along with me in verses 3 and 4, we read this. 00:04:50.899 --> 00:04:58.959 It seemed good to me also, that's to Luke, having followed all things closely for some time past, 00:04:58.959 --> 00:05:03.060 to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, 00:05:03.060 --> 00:05:07.479 that you may have certainty regarding the things that you have been taught. 00:05:07.480 --> 00:05:14.400 This morning, let me just share with you what I've been looking at this text about. 00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:17.040 We don't know who really Theophilus was. 00:05:17.680 --> 00:05:18.340 We can guess. 00:05:18.420 --> 00:05:23.319 He was called most excellent Theophilus, probably somebody of importance, 00:05:23.920 --> 00:05:26.920 probably in the Roman political system. 00:05:27.560 --> 00:05:29.300 We don't know if he was a new believer, 00:05:29.500 --> 00:05:31.819 and if Luke's trying to encourage him in his faith. 00:05:32.120 --> 00:05:35.080 We don't know if he was somebody seeking to know more about Jesus, 00:05:35.079 --> 00:05:37.079 and Luke's trying to show him who Jesus is. 00:05:37.939 --> 00:05:42.180 But what I think that Luke is trying to accomplish from books 1 and book 2 00:05:42.180 --> 00:05:46.899 is to help Theophilus understand what's happening in his world today. 00:05:47.300 --> 00:05:49.360 Because see, when Luke is writing the scripture, 00:05:49.919 --> 00:05:52.939 this is decades after the ascension of Jesus Christ. 00:05:54.199 --> 00:05:57.459 And what's happening in his world at this time is, 00:05:57.879 --> 00:06:04.120 there's a group of these uneducated, untrained, average people 00:06:05.079 --> 00:06:06.859 and they're turning the world upside down. 00:06:07.359 --> 00:06:12.399 And so I would submit to you that Dr. Luke is writing to give an accurate, 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:18.519 fact-checked, orderly, unique, and persuasive explanation to Theophilus 00:06:18.519 --> 00:06:22.479 and to all who read part 1 and part 2 of this lengthier book, 00:06:22.740 --> 00:06:27.120 how this uneducated, ordinary group of people are doing this. 00:06:27.120 --> 00:06:32.060 How are they so effective at transforming lives? 00:06:33.959 --> 00:06:36.060 How are they turning the world upside down? 00:06:37.699 --> 00:06:41.980 And I would submit to you that what he says in the book of Luke, 00:06:42.300 --> 00:06:43.340 the gospel of Luke, 00:06:43.899 --> 00:06:47.000 is that this explanation is not that they just figured out something. 00:06:47.699 --> 00:06:51.699 It rests solely on the foundation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. 00:06:51.699 --> 00:06:51.819 Christ. 00:06:53.579 --> 00:06:57.979 Would you imagine for a moment that you are Theophilus there in chapter 1? 00:06:58.740 --> 00:07:02.879 You received this part 1 of this letter from Luke. 00:07:03.199 --> 00:07:06.300 And this is the very first time you're reading through this. 00:07:07.279 --> 00:07:10.819 You can imagine as you're following the events of the birth of Christ, 00:07:10.939 --> 00:07:14.480 and it's like, wow, just as the scriptures foretold. 00:07:14.740 --> 00:07:16.719 The prophets said this is going to happen. 00:07:16.879 --> 00:07:17.779 And it is. 00:07:17.779 --> 00:07:19.059 It's amazing. 00:07:19.779 --> 00:07:24.339 And then you read about how Jesus is doing all these wonderful miracles. 00:07:25.339 --> 00:07:28.519 And you hear about the words that he spoke with such authority. 00:07:29.099 --> 00:07:31.459 You see the stories of lives changed. 00:07:32.779 --> 00:07:36.139 And then all of a sudden you get to this unfair, 00:07:37.279 --> 00:07:41.359 this treasonous treatment of Jesus Christ, 00:07:42.199 --> 00:07:44.119 even from his own followers. 00:07:44.120 --> 00:07:47.840 And you see that it leads to his suffering, 00:07:48.100 --> 00:07:49.379 and it leads to the cross. 00:07:49.879 --> 00:07:52.620 The very first time you're reading this, just imagine that. 00:07:53.379 --> 00:07:56.079 I could see Theophilus just kind of looking up to heaven going, 00:07:56.600 --> 00:07:58.220 what are you doing? 00:07:59.759 --> 00:08:00.879 This isn't fair. 00:08:02.060 --> 00:08:03.180 This isn't right. 00:08:06.439 --> 00:08:07.920 But he continues to read. 00:08:07.920 --> 00:08:13.300 And then he reads of the resurrection in Luke 24. 00:08:13.759 --> 00:08:18.340 And he reads about the accounts of those that encountered the living Jesus Christ, 00:08:18.460 --> 00:08:20.060 the one who is risen indeed. 00:08:22.220 --> 00:08:25.980 And he says, oh, I think I'm beginning to get it. 00:08:27.060 --> 00:08:29.240 Jesus Christ is no longer dead. 00:08:29.300 --> 00:08:30.080 He's alive. 00:08:30.300 --> 00:08:31.240 He's risen indeed. approached those two on the road to Emmaus. 00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:43.240 Remember that? 00:08:44.100 --> 00:08:47.960 And Jesus comes alongside of them and begins talking with them, 00:08:48.659 --> 00:08:50.100 asking about what's happened. 00:08:51.200 --> 00:08:52.139 And what does he do? 00:08:52.299 --> 00:08:55.240 Jesus begins to open their minds 00:08:55.240 --> 00:08:57.940 to understand that from the very beginning of Scripture 00:08:57.940 --> 00:09:01.220 to the very point there that they have of Scripture, 00:09:01.420 --> 00:09:04.260 it all focused on Jesus the Christ. 00:09:06.060 --> 00:09:07.940 And their hearts burned within them. 00:09:08.480 --> 00:09:11.180 And remember what happened when they got back to their home in Emmaus? 00:09:12.360 --> 00:09:14.200 --> 00:10:16.900 Jesus came and stood among them. 00:10:16.899 --> 00:10:21.559 Now, friends, I mean, one moment, 00:10:22.659 --> 00:10:23.519 they're there talking. 00:10:24.980 --> 00:10:26.079 The life becomes fractured, 00:12:56.980 --> 00:12:58.740 when life just doesn't make sense, 00:12:59.799 --> 00:13:03.879 the peace of God invites us to have the whole, 00:13:03.879 --> 00:13:07.120 the
