Let me set the scene for you. 00:01:04.620 --> 00:01:06.019 Notice how the chapter opens. 00:01:06.140 --> 00:01:12.060 We're told that Jesus went out of the house and he sat beside the sea. 00:01:12.280 --> 00:01:14.599 Great crowds gather to hear him. 00:01:15.340 --> 00:01:20.140 In fact, the crowds are so great that he's got to get into a boat to get away from them. 00:01:21.079 --> 00:01:22.659 And he speaks to them from a boat. 00:01:23.939 --> 00:01:24.960 This is what seems to be happening. 00:01:25.079 --> 00:01:26.319 Jesus, I must heal the sick. 00:01:26.420 --> 00:01:28.519 People are clamoring for it to touch him. 00:01:29.060 --> 00:01:30.980 And no doubt he wants to speak to them. 00:01:31.040 --> 00:01:33.299 So he puts a little bit of distance between we're told that Jesus didn't speak anything to them without using a parable. 00:02:12.780 --> 00:02:15.300 So why, Jesus, do you speak in parables? 00:02:15.919 --> 00:02:17.020 The disciples ask him. 00:02:28.439 you've probably heard that parables are an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. 00:02:29.719 --> 00:02:30.319 Maybe. 00:02:31.780 --> 00:02:35.719 Maybe you think of them like beautiful little anecdotes 00:02:35.719 --> 00:02:37.740 that make difficult things straightforward. 00:02:38.520 --> 00:02:40.139 Stories Jesus tells. 00:02:41.740 --> 00:02:44.879 So why doesn't every preacher speak in parables? 00:02:46.319 --> 00:02:49.620 Why don't they teach preachers to do that in Bible college? 00:02:50.960 --> 00:02:53.939 I love what Spurgeon says of so much of people's preaching. 00:02:54.159 --> 00:02:56.900 He says, so much of preaching is over people's heads. 00:02:56.900 --> 00:03:01.900 Spurgeon said, don't forget, Jesus said, feed my sheep, not my giraffes. 00:03:03.400 --> 00:03:07.759 And yet so often, isn't it, the way preachers speak, it's kind of out of our reach. 00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:10.060 It's inaccessible. 00:03:10.060 --> 00:03:13.780 So why --> 00:06:25.540 are you for real? 00:06:26.920 --> 00:06:28.300 Or should we look for another? 00:06:29.939 --> 00:06:33.300 And so you see, Matthew 13 is a really crucial point in Jesus' ministry. 00:06:34.899 --> 00:06:38.000 His popularity is on the increase, the crowds are gathering, 00:06:38.399 --> 00:06:40.719 but at the same time, opposition is growing. 00:06:40.720 --> 00:06:46.820 And so Jesus speaks in parables to sift his hearers. 00:06:46.819 --> 00:06:51.920 He sorts his hearers into those who want to know 00:06:51.920 --> 00:06:54.199 and those who don't really want to know. 00:08:57.300 --> 00:08:58.480 was a guy called Thomas Bilney. 00:08:59.580 --> 00:09:00.180 Now, they were both 00:09:00.180 --> 00:09:01.820 in Oxford University. 00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:03.340 Latimer was a priest. 00:09:04.600 --> 00:09:05.840 Bilney was converted first. 00:09:07.420 --> 00:09:09.360 And Bilney wanted Latimer 00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:10.200 to become a Christian.
