good decisions. 00:03:12.099 --> 00:03:13.879 We love good leaders. 00:03:13.879 --> 00:03:20.799 And generally speaking, we'll happily follow someone who meets the mark and gives us what we want. 00:03:21.620 --> 00:03:25.019 But we also expect too much of our leaders. 00:03:25.719 --> 00:03:32.060 We look to the leaders in our lives to solve problems which they couldn't possibly solve. 00:03:32.859 --> 00:03:41.879 In politics, we want our politicians to uphold Christian values, to look after the environment, the needy, the poor, the unborn. 00:03:41.879 --> 00:03:43.659 Or things they should do. 00:03:44.400 --> 00:03:52.079 But we can't expect ungodly leaders of an ungodly nation to bring true moral transformation. 00:03:53.299 --> 00:03:54.819 What about our pastors? When we start looking for the things we think our leaders should be providing, instead of seeing who our leaders are and what they're here for, we miss out. 00:04:56.060 --> 00:04:58.939 But what about when it comes to Jesus? 00:04:58.939 --> 00:05:02.920 A lot of us here would claim to follow him. 00:05:03.759 --> 00:05:05.600 We would say he is our true leader. 00:05:06.100 --> 00:05:09.980 But do we miss him in the pursuit of the things we want? 00:05:11.199 --> 00:05:21.379 I think we can easily look to him for the things we think he should be providing, instead of seeing him for who 00:05:51.179 Today in our passage, the Israelites are looking for Jesus to be their leader and not just any leader, but their king. 00:05:51.939 --> 00:05:54.399 The king they think they need. 00:05:54.399 --> 00:06:00.919 And they have very strong thoughts about what they think this king can give them. 00:06:01.819 --> 00:06:05.000 And it is in this search we come to our passage. 00:06:05.179 --> 00:06:06.959 So have your Bible open. 00:06:06.959 --> 00:06:14.099 Now as Jesus enters Jerusalem, his formal ministries and signs are complete. 00:06:14.719 --> 00:06:19.479 But now the shadow of the cross looms over everything that happens. 00:06:19.879 --> 00:06:22.859 And so as he enters Jerusalem, he faces two immediate things. 00:06:22.939 --> 00:06:28.539 He faces the threat of the religious leaders who want to kill him. 00:06:28.540 --> 00:06:33.040 And he also faces the hype of the Passover. 00:06:33.040 --> 00:06:46.100 So in the chapter before this, when Jesus decided to come to Bethany and raise Lazarus, right outside of Jerusalem, it was already dangerous for Jesus to go there. 00:06:47.260 --> 00:06:52.160 His disciples told him, last time you came here, Jesus, they tried to kill you. 00:06:52.740 --> 00:06:53.300 Don't go. 00:06:53.300 --> 00:06:57.040 But Jesus insisted on going to Bethany to raise Lazarus. 00:06:58.120 --> 00:07:07.319 Thomas, known for his doubting, shows a level of devotion and courage in chapter 11 by saying, let us also go that we might die with him. 00:07:08.460 --> 00:07:10.939 So it was dangerous for Jesus to go to Bethany. 00:07:10.939 --> 00:07:21.000 But then Jesus goes to Bethany and raises tensions by the raising of Lazarus and causes a huge commotion. 00:07:21.139 --> 00:07:24.000 So look at verses 9 to 11 of chapter 12. 00:07:26.300 --> 00:07:35.639 When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. 00:07:36.120 --> 00:07:40.680 So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well. 00:07:41.399 --> 00:07:46.199 Because on account of him, many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. 00:07:47.740 --> 00:07:54.060 Their desire to kill Jesus intensifies and is now extended to Lazarus. 00:07:55.060 --> 00:08:08.120 And Jesus, knowing the religious leaders have given orders to arrest him when he enters Jerusalem, as seen in chapter 11, and have an even intensified desire to kill him, enters into Jerusalem. 00:08:08.120 --> 00:08:15.240 Jesus also comes into Jerusalem facing the Passover, the feast in verse 12. 00:08:15.319 --> 00:08:16.160 Look at verse 12. 00:08:17.620 --> 00:08:25.139 The next day, the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 00:08:25.139 --> 00:08:31.240 Now, the Passover was the great holiday or festival of Judaism. 00:08:31.959 --> 00:08:37.120 People would have been coming in from all over Israel and even the Roman Empire to celebrate it. 00:08:37.179 --> 00:08:44.319 And there could have been as many as 3 million Jews in Jerusalem for the Passover, which is a lot back then. 00:08:44.320 --> 00:08:53.960 And now the Passover remembered God saving captive Israel from Egyptian slavery, the story of the Exodus. 00:08:53.960 --> 00:09:02.120 And so as they celebrated the Passover this year, the feeling of Roman oppression would have weighed heavy. 00:09:02.120 --> 00:09:19.940 This would have flamed their longing for freedom and restoration and the prophet Jesus from Galilee, the man who could do many signs and wonders, would have seemed like the perfect man to come and free them. 00:09:20.759 --> 00:09:30.320 And so it's in this context, the Passover's, the religious leaders wanting to kill Jesus and the hype of the Passover that Jesus enters Jerusalem. 00:09:30.320 --> 00:09:39.220 Now, Jesus was only 3 kilometers away from Jerusalem in Bethany and pilgrims would have still been pouring in from every direction. 00:09:40.020 --> 00:09:44.100 And they were coming in early because you had to be ritually clean before the Passover. 00:09:44.320 --> 00:09:45.620 So they'd just be pouring in. 00:09:46.180 --> 00:09:49.360 And so word of his coming to Jerusalem would have easily come ahead of him. 00:09:50.820 --> 00:09:56.080 And in chapter 11, we see that the Jews are on the lookout for Jesus, wondering, where is he coming? 00:09:56.160 --> 00:09:57.320 Is he going to come to the festival? 00:09:57.320 --> 00:10:07.960 And so as Jesus sets out to Jerusalem, likely already with a crowd, as we'll see, a large crowd comes out of the city to meet him. 00:10:09.580 --> 00:10:14.260 As the crowd comes out to meet Jesus, we see what type of king they want. 00:10:15.260 --> 00:10:16.420 Look at verse 13. 00:10:16.419 --> 00:10:32.139 Their response looks good. 00:10:33.059 --> 00:10:37.120 Finally, they seem to get who Jesus is and give him the praise that is due. 00:10:37.120 --> 00:10:43.240 They get palm branches and wave them around, crying out, Hosanna. 00:10:44.440 --> 00:10:48.480 And Hosanna means save, we pray, save, we beseech you. 00:10:48.919 --> 00:10:51.299 They want Jesus to save them. 00:10:52.320 --> 00:10:56.159 They bless Jesus, acknowledging that he comes in the name of the Lord. 00:10:56.659 --> 00:10:59.620 And finally, they declare that he is king. 00:11:00.700 --> 00:11:04.919 They're quoting Psalm 118, which was seen as a messianic psalm. 00:11:04.919 --> 00:11:09.559 They see Jesus as a long-awaited Messiah promised in the Old Testament. 00:11:10.579 --> 00:11:13.579 What a good response to the coming of the king. 00:11:14.799 --> 00:11:20.539 If someone was to say these things in the church today, we'd offer them the Lord's Supper and ask if they wanted to be baptised. 00:11:22.259 --> 00:11:30.039 But as we look at what they're doing, which looks good on the surface, we see what type of king they truly want. 00:11:30.039 --> 00:11:36.740 Now, palm branches were used in many Jewish festivals, but not the Passover. 00:11:38.019 --> 00:11:43.179 And they had come to be symbols of nationalism and freedom. 00:11:44.459 --> 00:11:50.079 200 years, Simon Maccabee defeated the Syrians and cast them out of Jerusalem. 00:11:50.080 --> 00:11:53.360 How did the Jews celebrate this? 00:11:54.180 --> 00:11:57.720 With the singing of music and the waving of palm branches. 00:11:57.720 --> 00:12:00.180 That's how they welcomed him in through his victory parade. 00:12:00.460 --> 00:12:05.300 The same thing happened when his brother, Judas Maccabee, defeated the Syrians in another battle. 00:12:06.720 --> 00:12:10.120 Now, Israel, Jerusalem, was under Roman occupation. 00:12:10.120 --> 00:12:18.960 The Jews did want Jesus to save them, but they wanted him to save them from their oppressors. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:25.080 They wanted a king to save their national honour, wealth, and to give them freedom. 00:12:26.080 --> 00:12:28.320 They wanted a conquering king. 00:12:29.820 --> 00:12:38.879 The crowd want a conquering king riding on a war horse, but Jesus comes as the king the crowd needs riding on a donkey. 00:12:38.879 --> 00:12:40.500 Look at verse 14. 00:12:41.700 --> 00:12:43.700 The first half of verse 14. 00:12:44.200 --> 00:12:47.379 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it. 00:12:49.720 --> 00:12:50.399 Simple. 00:12:51.500 --> 00:13:00.720 The crowd starts up this chanting in action and in response, Jesus deliberately challenges them by getting on a young donkey. 00:13:01.939 --> 00:13:07.759 Jesus says nothing here, but he's actually making a big statement to the crowd. 00:13:07.759 --> 00:13:09.819 Think about protesters. 00:13:11.799 --> 00:13:18.159 Protesters often will do simple actions to make a big statement and get a big response. 00:13:18.500 --> 00:13:30.439 So, for example, recently we had the Extinction Rebellion, where protesters were shutting down main roads, public transport, CBDs to bring awareness to climate change. 00:13:30.440 --> 00:13:35.800 And what they did was a bit crazy in shutting down those things, but it was quite simple. 00:13:36.200 --> 00:13:38.940 Like, chained themselves together in the middle of a road. 00:13:39.460 --> 00:13:41.280 And they got a big response. 00:13:41.800 --> 00:13:43.960 And a lot of people were angry at them. 00:13:44.040 --> 00:13:49.200 I'm sure there's maybe some people here who got annoyed at those greeny protesters. 00:13:50.680 --> 00:13:52.900 Simple actions, big statement. 00:13:52.899 --> 00:13:57.019 Another example is the Tank Man. 00:13:57.819 --> 00:13:58.699 Do you know that picture? 00:13:59.480 --> 00:14:01.120 1989, Tiananmen Square. 00:14:02.459 --> 00:14:08.740 Tanks are on their way to a square where students and young people are protesting, looking for freedom. 00:14:10.059 --> 00:14:12.939 And then out off the side of the road, a man comes. 00:14:13.019 --> 00:14:17.879 He's holding his groceries and he just stands in front of the tanks, a column of tanks. 00:14:17.879 --> 00:14:25.399 It's quite simple, his actions, just standing in the road, but he's making a big statement. 00:14:25.539 --> 00:14:28.600 He's saying, stop, you shouldn't go there. 00:14:31.120 --> 00:14:37.320 His simple actions told a powerful message, and this is what Jesus does here, by simply riding on a donkey. 00:14:37.899 --> 00:14:40.120 Now, donkeys were not embarrassing to ride. 00:14:40.200 --> 00:14:42.039 That's what I thought when I first read this. 00:14:43.340 --> 00:14:45.559 Donkeys today seem to be a bit of a joke. 00:14:45.559 --> 00:14:51.239 But back then, royals and commoners would ride donkeys, and you see that even in the Bible. 00:14:53.059 --> 00:14:55.839 But they were animals of peace. 00:14:57.439 --> 00:15:00.059 Conquering kings would not ride donkeys into battle. 00:15:00.559 --> 00:15:01.439 That would look weird. 00:15:02.099 --> 00:15:07.559 The Roman soldiers at the gates, as they see Jesus coming in on this young donkey, they wouldn't be threatened by this. 00:15:07.559 --> 00:15:12.419 The crowd want Jesus to come in and take over the fortress. 00:15:13.399 --> 00:15:18.199 But Jesus throws that back in their face by getting on a peaceful donkey. 00:15:19.479 --> 00:15:23.539 Jesus is showing that he comes to bring peace, not the sword. 00:15:24.259 --> 00:15:27.839 That they need a deeper liberation than liberation from Rome. 00:15:27.840 --> 00:15:35.940 He also comes as the king they need, as he shows that he comes to lay his life down willingly. 00:15:37.259 --> 00:15:40.420 He's in complete control of the situation. 00:15:41.040 --> 00:15:46.759 And while he comes to bring peace, he is intentionally provoking not just the crowd, but his enemies. 00:15:46.759 --> 00:15:54.700 He would have been coming down the Man of Olives to the east of Jerusalem with a crowd with him, a big crowd already. 00:15:55.259 --> 00:16:00.279 And then the crowd coming out of Jerusalem would be coming down the hill from the eastern side of Jerusalem. 00:16:00.439 --> 00:16:02.600 They would have met in the middle in a valley. 00:16:03.220 --> 00:16:08.700 Now perched on this side of the wall, on the east of Jerusalem, was the temple. 00:16:08.700 --> 00:16:11.379 Jesus does this. 00:16:11.460 --> 00:16:22.220 He causes this commotion in the plain sight of the religious leaders who had set a watch to find him, to arrest him, as soon as he came to Jerusalem. 00:16:23.360 --> 00:16:29.740 And so they found him, except there's a giant crowd welcoming him in. 00:16:29.740 --> 00:16:40.360 He comes in challenging the crowd, challenging the religious leaders, just by getting on a donkey. 00:16:41.519 --> 00:16:46.600 He comes to bring peace and lay his life down willingly. 00:16:47.340 --> 00:16:52.879 And it is here where the writer Zechariah. 00:17:14.079 --> 00:17:18.380 Now, John condenses quite a bit Zechariah 9.9. 00:17:18.380 --> 00:17:30.720 But when we go to Zechariah 9 and we look at the surrounding verses, we see even more clearly about what type of king Jesus was and how he was the king the crowd needed, not what they wanted. 00:17:31.500 --> 00:17:36.580 So will you turn with me to Zechariah 9.9 and we'll have a look at what that says, because it is actually a little bit different. 00:17:36.579 --> 00:17:43.859 So John, Luke, Mark, Matthew, Malachi, and then Zechariah. 00:17:43.960 --> 00:17:45.419 So it's not actually that far away. 00:17:46.639 --> 00:17:49.339 So turn with me to Zechariah 9.9. 00:17:49.579 --> 00:17:50.480 That's not Zechariah. 00:17:50.480 --> 00:18:07.039 And the context of Zechariah is that the Israelites, the Jews, have returned from exile and they're trying to return to the Lord and how he should act. 00:18:07.220 --> 00:18:11.620 And this part of Zechariah is looking forward to the coming king and Messiah. 00:18:12.759 --> 00:18:16.420 And so this is what Zechariah 9.9 says. 00:18:16.420 --> 00:18:16.940 It says, 00:18:16.940 --> 00:18:20.160 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion. 00:18:20.480 --> 00:18:23.460 Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. 00:18:23.960 --> 00:18:26.440 Behold, your king is coming to you. 00:18:26.599 --> 00:18:28.819 Righteous and having salvation is he. 00:18:29.299 --> 00:18:31.519 Humble and mounted on a donkey. 00:18:32.240 --> 00:18:34.120 On a colt, the foal of a donkey. 00:18:35.099 --> 00:18:37.819 You couldn't have how different this king is from what the crowd want back in John. 00:19:06.120 --> 00:19:08.500 So look at Zechariah 9.10. 00:19:08.500 --> 00:19:15.299 I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem. 00:19:15.819 --> 00:19:20.420 And the battle bow shall be cut off and he shall speak peace to the nations. 00:19:20.920 --> 00:19:26.339 His rule shall be from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth. 00:19:26.339 --> 00:19:28.939 What do the crowd want? 00:19:29.000 --> 00:19:30.099 They want a conquering king. 00:19:30.819 --> 00:19:36.139 But this king
