00:05:22.839 --> 00:05:25.359 The original audience for Hebrews 00:05:25.359 --> 00:05:27.939 is a church of Hellenistic Jews, 00:05:28.060 --> 00:05:29.519 think Greek-speaking Jews, 00:05:30.039 --> 00:05:31.419 that had not seen Jesus, 00:05:31.959 --> 00:05:35.719 but they had heard the gospel and believed. 00:05:36.060 --> 00:05:41.319 Most likely a small church meeting on the outskirts of Rome. 00:05:42.159 --> 00:05:44.759 They had endured much suffering to this point, 00:05:44.919 --> 00:05:49.399 and the author is anticipating that they will suffer further. 00:05:49.399 --> 00:05:53.019 So there exists among them the temptation 00:05:53.019 --> 00:05:55.319 to forsake their faith in Jesus Christ 00:05:55.319 --> 00:05:57.839 and return to Judaism. 00:05:59.019 --> 00:06:01.120 Jews practicing Judaism 00:06:01.120 --> 00:06:04.019 had long been accepted in the Roman Empire, 00:06:04.179 --> 00:06:04.919 and this remained true 00:06:05.439 --> 00:06:08.319 in the days that this letter was written. 00:06:08.419 --> 00:06:09.359 So they're being tugged at. 00:06:09.419 --> 00:06:12.879 Perhaps we can still worship God in that way, 00:06:13.379 --> 00:06:15.399 this way that won't cost us 00:06:15.399 --> 00:06:19.319 our possessions and our comfort and our lives. 00:06:19.519 --> 00:06:22.259 And apostasy had already happened in the life of the church, Christ is held up like a great jewel 00:08:37.899 --> 00:08:40.159 to the sunlight of God's revelation. 00:08:40.840 --> 00:08:43.039 And as the light courses through it, 00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:47.879 seven facets flash with gleaming brilliance. 00:08:49.379 --> 00:08:52.259 Christ's supremacy and His finality 00:08:52.259 --> 00:08:56.199 is refracted for us to consider. 00:08:56.719 --> 00:08:59.319 This is the encouragement this morning, 00:08:59.679 --> 00:09:03.459 who Christ is and what He's accomplished. 00:09:04.620 --> 00:09:07.120 So let's give these seven refractions, Hebrews identifies for us 00:09:47.719 --> 00:09:52.360 Jesus Christ as the anointed and Son of Psalm 2 00:09:52.360 --> 00:09:57.120 when He cites Psalm 2-7 in chapter 1 and verse 5. 00:09:57.259 -->
