00:00:14.380 We heard about how Jesus was not welcomed by the people of one town in Samaria. 00:00:15.300 --> 00:00:21.339 And we heard Jesus talk about the commitment required to be one of his disciples. 00:00:22.100 --> 00:00:27.100 We're going to pick up the story here in Luke chapter 10, starting in verse 1. 00:00:27.100 --> 00:00:30.520 Let me just read the first number of verses here he is soon to visit. 00:02:15.620 --> 00:02:21.259 And as we talked about last week, the bulk of Jesus' ministry has been focused up in the north, in Galilee. 00:02:21.259 --> 00:02:26.639 But now he has his focus set on Jerusalem, where he will end up. 00:02:29.739 --> 00:02:33.819 And on the people in the towns and the cities that are around Jerusalem. 00:02:34.620 --> 00:02:40.620 And Jesus intends to visit many of these towns as part of his journey towards Jerusalem. 00:02:41.859 --> 00:02:46.759 And so these guys that he's sending out are kind of, in a sense, preparing the way for him. 00:02:46.759 --> 00:02:52.439 They're not going ahead just to find places for Jesus to stay, though. 00:02:53.340 --> 00:02:55.539 This is more than just logistics. 00:02:55.780 --> 00:03:02.079 These guys are coming to each of these towns to begin the work of Jesus there, on his behalf. 00:03:03.060 --> 00:03:09.159 If you were here on January 18th, you might feel some deja vu as we read about this ministry trip. 00:03:10.340 --> 00:03:15.379 That's because this is the second ministry trip where Jesus sends guys out to visit towns. 00:03:15.379 --> 00:03:20.120 The first one we read about just in the previous chapter, Luke chapter 9. 00:03:21.079 --> 00:03:24.219 And there's some major similarities between these two trips. 00:03:24.939 --> 00:03:31.400 In both cases, the guys that Jesus sends out are to travel light, taking almost nothing with them. 00:03:32.280 --> 00:03:37.979 In both cases, they're to rely on God to provide for their needs as they go from town to town. 00:03:37.979 --> 00:03:45.959 In both cases, they're given authority by Jesus to cast out demons and to heal people who are sick. 00:03:47.539 --> 00:03:51.819 In both of these trips, they're to proclaim the message of the kingdom of God. 00:03:52.759 --> 00:04:00.299 And Jesus gives specific instructions about what to do if the people don't respond well or if they reject them. 00:04:00.300 --> 00:04:03.820 But there's also some differences between these two trips. 00:04:03.939 --> 00:04:06.620 And that's what we'll focus on this morning with this second trip. 00:04:08.380 --> 00:04:11.120 We've already mentioned the difference in location. 00:04:11.560 --> 00:04:13.060 One in the north, one in the south. 00:04:14.160 --> 00:04:18.080 But there's also the difference of who goes on this trip. 00:04:18.220 --> 00:04:19.060 Who is sent. 00:04:19.819 --> 00:04:22.180 On the first trip, Jesus sent the twelve apostles. 00:04:22.180 --> 00:04:27.400 But on this second trip, we read that he is sending 72 others. 00:04:28.519 --> 00:04:31.639 And that word, others, quite specific in the original language. 00:04:31.819 --> 00:04:34.360 It means different than the ones already mentioned. 00:04:35.460 --> 00:04:39.399 And so these 72, it seems, did not include the twelve. 00:04:41.759 --> 00:04:51.000 The Lord appointed 72 others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 00:04:52.180 --> 00:04:58.400 Now some of you might be staring at your Bible and wondering why the number is not 72 and is 70. 00:04:59.500 --> 00:09:03.120 --> 00:09:03.920 In verse 2, 00:09:04.560 --> 00:09:06.440 The harvest is plentiful, he says, 00:09:06.820 --> 00:09:08.340 but the workers are few. 00:09:09.620 --> 00:09:11.420 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, 00:09:11.560 --> 00:09:14.660 to send out workers into his harvest field. 00:09:16.100 --> 00:09:21.600 So Jesus seems to be saying here that many will respond to the message. 00:09:21.600 --> 00:09:26.440 Many will believe in Jesus in these towns 00:09:26.440 --> 00:09:30.740 when these two guys come to each town to preach. 00:09:30.840 --> 00:09:34.379 There's about the danger that they will face. 00:10:09.339 --> 00:10:09.719 He says, 00:10:09.819 --> 00:10:13.279 Go, I'm sending you out like lambs among wolves. 00:10:16.479 --> 00:10:17.839 So many will believe, 00:10:18.139 --> 00:10:20.759 but many will have the opposite reaction. 00:10:22.579 --> 00:10:23.939 Not just indifference, 00:10:24.939 --> 00:10:26.240 but opposition. 00:10:26.240 -->
