It is a common thing to these days here that we live in increasingly post-Christian society. And I think in many ways that is certainly true. 00:00:20.339 --> 00:00:33.880 One of the pieces of that narrative that we hear is the declining numbers of people who are followers of Jesus, who participate in organized religion. And to a certain extent, those numbers have been true as well. 00:00:33.880 --> 00:00:51.939 And yet what's really interesting is right now, something very interesting is happening that bucks that trend. There's a new trend emerging. And it's just over the last few years, a kind of increased openness and hunger to the truth of the gospel. 00:00:51.939 --> 00:01:07.759 Over the last three years, since about 2021, 2022, the number of people who say they follow Jesus, they believe in and follow Jesus in a very meaningful way, that has gone up about 12% just in the last three years. 00:01:07.759 --> 00:01:20.719 And maybe that doesn't sound like much, but statistically it's very significant. That represents roughly 30 million people over the last three years. 30 million more people in our country saying that they're followers of Jesus. 00:01:20.719 --> 00:01:29.560 And what's even more interesting about that is that a lot of those people are either millennials or Gen Z. So relatively speaking, you're looking at younger generations. 00:01:30.340 --> 00:01:40.099 Those of us who are, I'm Gen X, so I'm far past being able to say young, but I think millennials can still claim to be within a younger generation and certainly Gen Z. 00:01:40.239 --> 00:01:43.259 And so people are looking at these numbers and trying to figure out what's happening. 00:01:43.260 --> 00:01:59.120 What that means for us is the chances are there are people in our lives right now where we live and work who may not be followers of Jesus, but who may very well be open to the truth and the power of Jesus. 00:01:59.240 --> 00:02:07.840 In other words, alluding to our gospel reading a moment ago, the fields are ripe for harvest, but the laborers are few. 00:02:08.040 --> 00:02:08.819 That's the problem. 00:02:08.819 --> 00:02:11.659 Why are there so few laborers? 00:02:11.759 --> 00:02:19.299 Well, I think most of us who are Christians get very uncomfortable with the idea of sharing our faith with other people. 00:02:20.099 --> 00:02:23.259 The word evangelism sort of makes people cringe. 00:02:23.780 --> 00:02:29.659 You get twitchy when you hear people talk about the fact that we should be doing more evangelism. 00:02:29.740 --> 00:02:31.060 You know, there's a lot of reasons for this. 00:02:31.060 --> 00:02:37.479 I think we don't want to offend people, and it feels like that's offensive to bring up faith in today's world. 00:02:38.120 --> 00:02:41.640 If we were to bring it up, a lot of us feel like we don't know what to say or do. 00:02:43.340 --> 00:02:49.140 I think some of us are just frankly afraid of how people will respond to us or what they might think of us. 00:02:49.139 --> 00:02:53.519 And so it raises this question of how do we talk to people about faith? 00:02:53.959 --> 00:03:03.099 How do we talk to people about Jesus when we live in a post-Christian society, and yet there's a hunger in the society? 00:03:03.599 --> 00:03:05.219 There's a longing, a searching. 00:03:05.560 --> 00:03:08.359 This is why we're looking at Paul's example in Acts chapter 17. 00:03:08.360 --> 00:03:13.580 We started last week by talking about what it means to think theologically about the culture. 00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:19.660 And this week we're going to look more closely at Paul's actual approach that he takes in Athens. 00:03:20.080 --> 00:03:21.060 He's in Athens. 00:03:21.420 --> 00:03:26.080 At this point in the story, he's been invited to present the gospel at the Areopagus. 00:03:26.840 --> 00:03:30.000 So that's like being invited to give a lecture at Harvard or Oxford. 00:03:30.460 --> 00:03:34.940 And all the leading intellectuals are going to be there, and they're very skeptical about this message. 00:03:35.580 --> 00:03:37.620 And so we're going to look at Paul's approach. 00:03:37.620 --> 00:03:39.920 These are highly educated, skeptical people. 00:03:40.259 --> 00:03:41.099 Where does Paul begin? 00:03:42.180 --> 00:03:44.000 Let's pray, and then we're going to break it down. 00:03:45.259 --> 00:03:59.340 Lord, we thank you for your word, and we thank you that independently, Lord, independent of anything we might do, of any strategy we might employ, of any rhetorical devices, Lord, your word itself has power. 00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:05.240 And you can work through your word in ways that go far beyond what we can ask or even imagine. 00:04:05.240 --> 00:04:08.200 And you know what we need better than we do, Lord. 00:04:08.280 --> 00:04:10.719 And so I pray for myself and for 00:04:48.760 The first thing that we see Paul do, right off the bat, is to affirm the longings that he sees in these Athenians as he has observed them by walking through their streets and living in their culture. 00:04:48.840 --> 00:04:50.140 He affirms their longings. 00:04:50.139 --> 00:04:59.379 The first time I was taught anything about how to do evangelism was a very long time ago, not long after I came to faith in my early 20s. 00:05:00.439 --> 00:05:03.919 And we learned a kind of method called the Romans Road. 00:05:04.719 --> 00:05:07.620 And I don't know if you're, some of you, many of you are probably familiar with this. 00:05:07.659 --> 00:05:08.479 The Romans Road. 00:05:09.319 --> 00:05:14.180 And that's a way of taking people through the book of Romans to lay out the gospel. 00:05:14.180 --> 00:05:24.720 But what's interesting about the method is that you begin in a place, the first thing that you tell people is that all have sinned and all have fallen short of the glory of God. 00:05:24.819 --> 00:05:29.519 So the starting place is you need to recognize that you're a sinner. 00:05:29.860 --> 00:05:31.660 Now, of course, this is theologically true. 00:05:31.780 --> 00:05:35.340 We believe every word that Paul wrote in Romans. 00:05:35.339 --> 00:05:42.959 And if you're speaking to somebody who already has a relatively high view of the Bible and sees it as a trustworthy document, 00:05:43.779 --> 00:05:50.019 if you're dealing with somebody who already feels a sense of guilt and shame and is trying to figure out what to do with that, 00:05:50.919 --> 00:05:52.739 then this would make a lot of sense. 00:05:52.739 --> 00:05:59.259 This way of laying out the gospel would be ultimately very comforting for somebody like that. 00:05:59.479 --> 00:06:01.739 But that's simply not the case in Athens. 00:06:02.799 --> 00:06:04.899 And so Paul begins in a very different place. 00:06:05.339 --> 00:06:06.279 It says, 00:06:06.479 --> 00:06:08.839 So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said, 00:06:09.359 --> 00:06:13.599 Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. 00:06:15.159 --> 00:06:18.659 Now, we need to understand, you know, he's not starting from a place of condemnation. 00:06:18.779 --> 00:06:20.859 You're a bunch of idolatrous pagan-worshipping sinners. 00:06:21.939 --> 00:06:23.679 He starts with a compliment. 00:06:24.699 --> 00:06:28.059 He starts by affirming their spiritual hunger. 00:06:28.559 --> 00:06:30.579 I mean, this is a very positive statement. 00:06:30.739 --> 00:06:33.519 When he said, I perceive that in every way you're very religious, they would have been like, 00:06:33.639 --> 00:06:34.359 Yes, we are. 00:06:34.360 --> 00:06:35.680 We take these things seriously. 00:06:36.740 --> 00:06:38.420 And so he's affirming them. 00:06:39.939 --> 00:06:44.800 Of course he recognizes the spiritual darkness of the idols they worship. 00:06:45.560 --> 00:06:49.060 We said last week, we looked at the fact that he's deeply disturbed by them. 00:06:49.340 --> 00:06:50.920 He's deeply disturbed by them. 00:06:50.920 --> 00:07:01.360 But what we see here is that Paul also recognizes that underneath the surface, these people have very legitimate longings that all human beings share in common. 00:07:01.360 --> 00:07:09.840 So he's disturbed that the Athenians worshipped Athena and named their city Athena instead of the true God. 00:07:09.840 --> 00:07:15.480 But he also recognizes that under the surface, these are people who are longing for what? 00:07:15.480 --> 00:07:17.180 Why do you worship Athena? 00:07:17.920 --> 00:07:20.580 Well, you want your political leaders to have wisdom. 00:07:21.780 --> 00:07:23.780 You want political stability. 00:07:23.980 --> 00:07:25.480 You want economic prosperity. 00:07:26.180 --> 00:07:28.400 Those are things that most everyone wants. 00:07:28.399 --> 00:07:32.139 And they're longing for these things. 00:07:32.239 --> 00:07:33.299 Paul's like, I know what that's like. 00:07:33.779 --> 00:07:39.259 He's disturbed by people who make offerings to the goddess Artemis instead of worshiping God. 00:07:39.259 --> 00:07:43.359 But Paul also recognizes who goes to worship Artemis. 00:07:43.360 --> 00:07:51.800 Well, women who are pregnant and who are terrified of an awful, painful death for themselves or their child. 00:07:52.660 --> 00:07:55.980 Because there is no technology, nothing near what we have today. 00:07:56.360 --> 00:08:03.840 And so they're going and they're making offerings because Artemis is said to be the one who can deliver them safely through childbearing. 00:08:05.319 --> 00:08:07.439 And so they're going and they're putting their hope. 00:08:07.780 --> 00:08:10.240 And so Paul recognizes, you know, on the surface they're worshiping an idol. 00:08:10.460 --> 00:08:12.199 But underneath, everybody wants that. 00:08:12.199 --> 00:08:15.939 Nobody wants a horrible, painful death when they're trying to have a child. 00:08:16.300 --> 00:08:20.680 And so there are these legitimate longings underneath the idol worship. 00:08:21.500 --> 00:08:27.240 The people who worship the false gods of Athens are motivated by the same longings that anyone else would be motivated by. 00:08:27.319 --> 00:08:28.079 They want to be safe. 00:08:28.579 --> 00:08:30.000 They want to be financially secure. 00:08:30.259 --> 00:08:32.700 They want to have meaningful relationships and a sense of purpose. 00:08:33.059 --> 00:08:36.799 They're afraid of the unknown and they want some sense of control over the future. 00:08:38.039 --> 00:08:40.360 Like everybody you've ever met. 00:08:40.360 --> 00:08:43.860 This is what we need to understand about idol worship. 00:08:43.960 --> 00:08:54.180 When we talk about idol worship, that's just another way of saying that people tend to prioritize and devote themselves to the things they believe are most likely to satisfy those longings. 00:08:55.080 --> 00:08:56.399 That's essentially what it is. 00:08:56.399 --> 00:09:04.379 We tend to prioritize and ultimately devote ourselves to the things that we ultimately believe are most likely to satisfy those inner longings. 00:09:04.379 --> 00:09:06.320 You see the same thing in a place like D.C. 00:09:06.320 --> 00:09:12.379 You know, you have a co-worker who maybe you feel like you have nothing in common with. 00:09:12.700 --> 00:09:16.200 You know, they go by, you know, they use they-them pronouns. 00:09:16.420 --> 00:09:23.020 They have a whole way of seeing the world that, you know, you personally don't subscribe to that gender ideology at all. 00:09:23.080 --> 00:09:24.540 And you feel like there's no common ground. 00:09:24.539 --> 00:09:31.319 And what you need to understand is that underneath the surface, that's simply someone who is just wanting to feel comfortable in their own skin. 00:09:32.219 --> 00:09:32.399 Right? 00:09:32.419 --> 00:09:38.759 It's somebody who is wanting a sense of identity, wanting a sense of belonging just like you, just like anyone else. 00:09:39.819 --> 00:09:40.219 Right? 00:09:40.779 --> 00:09:45.719 The neighbor down the street who's obsessed with politics and has all the yard signs laying out all the views. 00:09:45.720 --> 00:09:52.980 You know, maybe you totally disagree with their politics, but underneath the surface, that's a person who's longing for some sense of meaning and purpose. 00:09:54.080 --> 00:09:57.500 They're longing for some clear sense of right and wrong of good guys and bad guys. 00:09:57.580 --> 00:09:59.779 And they found it in the world of politics. 00:10:01.320 --> 00:10:05.940 So this is where we start by recognizing and affirming the longings under the surface. to the next point. 00:10:13.019 --> 00:10:16.399 Don't assume that the people around you are not interested in God. 00:10:18.019 --> 00:10:20.500 Every human being on the planet is a worshiper. 00:10:22.199 --> 00:10:24.279 These are people with real spiritual longings. 00:10:24.379 --> 00:10:27.500 They're simply looking in other places to satisfy those longings. 00:10:27.879 --> with people, your posture is such that you're not talking down to somebody from a position of spiritual superiority. 00:10:43.019 --> 00:10:44.939 Or as though you're the one with all the answers. 00:11:26.259 --> 00:11:26.799 Verse 23. 00:11:26.799 --> 00:11:28.579 Now, this is remarkable. 00:11:29.679 --> 00:11:32.819 The Athenians, despite their vast pantheon, 00:11:34.559 --> 00:11:39.599 still sensed that there was something missing. 00:11:40.819 --> 00:11:41.199 Right? 00:11:41.259 --> 00:11:44.219 Despite all of the options on the religious buffet, 00:11:45.679 --> 00:11:48.879 they still have this altar to the unknown God. 00:11:48.959 --> 00:11:52.799 They still sense there has to be more. 00:11:54.079 --> 00:11:56.179 Something still felt incomplete. 00:11:57.559 --> 00:12:00.639 So they left a space open, a kind of placeholder, 00:12:01.620 --> 00:12:05.099 for whomever or whatever that thing might be. 00:12:06.219 --> 00:12:07.979 And, you know, as we said a moment ago, 00:12:08.099 --> 00:12:10.139 people tend to prioritize and devote themselves 00:12:10.139 --> 00:12:15.579 to the things they believe are most likely to satisfy their longings. 00:12:15.639 --> 00:12:17.279 But here's the next thing we need to see. 00:12:18.620 --> 00:12:21.639 Inevitably, anything we devote ourselves to other than God 00:12:21.639 --> 00:12:23.959 is going to fall short. 00:12:23.960 --> 00:12:27.400 It's going to make promises that it can't deliver on. 00:12:29.060 --> 00:12:30.180 Just to give one example, 00:12:30.420 --> 00:12:32.360 there's nothing wrong with wanting to be successful. 00:12:33.540 --> 00:12:36.820 There is a kind of good and godly form of ambition 00:12:36.820 --> 00:12:39.080 that drives us to work hard, to get up early, 00:12:39.800 --> 00:12:42.000 to put our best effort into things. 00:12:42.560 --> 00:12:43.960 But there are countless people 00:12:43.960 --> 00:12:48.639 who are completely devoted to success and status. 00:12:48.639 --> 00:12:51.059 It's not just important, it's become ultimate. 00:12:51.259 --> 00:12:52.740 It's become a kind of idol. 00:12:53.100 --> 00:12:55.100 I don't know who I am 00:12:55.100 --> 00:12:57.419 or what value I have if I'm not successful. 00:12:57.500 --> 00:12:59.539 I can't imagine my life being worth living 00:12:59.539 --> 00:13:00.460 if I'm not successful. 00:13:01.259 --> 00:13:02.379 They've crossed a line. 00:13:03.860 --> 00:13:05.960 What's interesting is to talk to people 00:13:05.960 --> 00:13:08.840 when they have achieved success and status, 00:13:32.459 and still think there's something greater out there for me? 00:13:33.379 --> 00:13:35.339 And he says, it's got to be more than this. 00:13:36.819 --> 00:13:37.539 And what he says, identity is the thing that they're after, 00:14:28.259 --> 00:14:28.899 and they're searching, 00:14:29.019 --> 00:14:29.600 and they're seeking, 00:14:30.420 --> 00:14:31.940 and that's the thing 00:14:55.180 she hoped that that newfound freedom 00:14:55.180 --> 00:14:58.080 would bring kind of a greater sense 00:14:58.080 --> 00:14:59.220 of identity and self-worth. 00:14:59.920 -->
