series in the book of Judges, 00:00:42.399 --> 00:00:43.759 because believe it or not, it's Easter. 00:00:45.060 --> 00:00:51.159 That's Resurrection Sunday, when we as a church celebrate the fact that Jesus, in fact, rose from the dead. 00:00:51.900 --> 00:00:58.900 Now, when we talk about Jesus, it's important to remember we're not talking about an abstraction or an idea or a theory. 00:00:58.899 --> 00:01:02.699 We are, in fact, talking about a historical figure, a real man. 00:01:03.359 --> 00:01:08.620 Jesus was born in the town of Bethlehem, which is five to six miles south of Jerusalem. 00:01:09.060 --> 00:01:14.739 And he grew up in Nazareth, which is 64 to 65 miles north of Jerusalem. 00:01:15.459 --> 00:01:18.840 Jesus was one of at least seven kids. 00:01:18.840 --> 00:01:21.900 And he had both brothers and sisters. 00:01:22.520 --> 00:01:25.020 Real man, real time, real space. 00:01:25.520 --> 00:01:28.820 It's also important to remember that the resurrection is not a metaphor. 00:01:29.719 --> 00:01:34.460 When we speak about the resurrection, we are speaking about a real historical event, 00:01:34.540 --> 00:01:36.840 an event that had numerous, many eyewitnesses. 00:01:36.840 --> 00:01:45.040 And so every Resurrection Sunday, every Easter, we come together and we talk about what that means for us, 00:01:45.100 --> 00:01:49.060 how, in fact, it gives us real hope and joy now. 00:01:49.920 --> 00:01:52.439 We're going to turn this morning to the book of 1 Peter. 00:01:52.900 --> 00:01:56.460 And the book of 1 Peter is a letter written by the Apostle Peter. 00:01:56.920 --> 00:02:01.540 He writes it in the first century A.D. to churches in modern-day Turkey. 00:02:01.540 --> 00:02:07.400 And these churches are feeling out of place in the world, and they're facing opposition from the world. 00:02:07.719 --> 00:02:11.680 And so they have this temptation, the temptation with all the heat coming in against them, 00:02:11.879 --> 00:02:13.680 to give up on Christianity. 00:02:14.700 --> 00:02:16.360 And so Peter writes to encourage them. 00:02:17.659 --> 00:02:23.819 Peter writes telling them why the resurrection is a better hope than any other hope, 00:02:24.500 --> 00:02:27.000 why it is worth suffering for. 00:02:27.780 --> 00:02:29.400 And so that's where we're headed this morning. 00:02:29.400 --> 00:02:31.259 We're in 1 Peter 1. 00:02:31.259 --> 00:02:33.379 We're going to look at verses 3 through 9. 00:02:33.840 --> 00:02:37.259 Our focus will be 3 and 4, especially 4, 00:02:37.340 --> 00:02:40.899 but we'll read 5 through 9 just so we have a larger, broader context. 00:02:41.679 --> 00:02:48.299 And as we come to this passage, I imagine that there are a few of us who are Christians, 00:02:48.519 --> 00:02:50.579 and for us, the resurrection is our life. 00:02:50.659 --> 00:02:52.379 We think of it when we wake up in the morning, 00:02:52.459 --> 00:02:56.379 and it orients the rest of our day and our weeks and our months. 00:02:56.379 --> 00:03:03.579 I would imagine for many more of us, it is actually a constant struggle for us to remember the resurrection, 00:03:04.379 --> 00:03:09.560 for it to be something as Christians that shapes our minds and our hearts and our lives. 00:03:09.560 --> 00:03:13.140 Some of us are not Christians. 00:03:14.140 --> 00:03:18.319 Perhaps you have doubts or questions or objections to Christianity. 00:03:18.319 --> 00:03:23.599 No matter which of those three categories you fall into, we're here together this morning, 00:03:23.599 --> 00:03:28.799 and I hope that you're here because all of us need to be reminded of the great resources, 00:03:29.019 --> 00:03:33.840 the great hope that we have from the fact that Jesus rose from the dead. 00:03:33.840 00:06:07.759 --> 00:06:08.639 Amen. 00:06:12.319 --> 00:06:17.300 A man named William Farley tells the story of many years ago 00:06:17.300 --> 00:06:20.980 when he visited a vineyard in the Napa Valley of California. 00:06:21.959 --> 00:06:23.219 And when he was at this vineyard, 00:06:23.300 --> 00:06:25.300 he had a chance to speak to the foreman 00:06:25.300 --> 00:06:29.579 who explained to him many of the dynamics of the work that they performed. 00:06:30.159 --> 00:06:32.639 He told him that the grapevines that they grew 00:06:32.639 --> 00:06:36.039 could reach an age of 80 to 100 years old. 00:06:36.040 --> 00:06:38.939 And then, in fact, they were not most productive 00:06:38.939 --> 00:06:41.500 until they hit around 30 to 50 years old. 00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:45.580 This was a long-term process of developing these grapevines, 00:06:46.319 --> 00:06:47.980 of growing this vineyard. 00:06:48.680 --> 00:06:50.640 In fact, he told him that, in fact, 00:06:50.700 --> 00:06:53.620 the taproot of many of these grapevines 00:06:53.620 --> 00:06:57.140 could grow 30 to 40 feet deep. 00:06:58.080 --> 00:07:00.100 Some of them grew so deep 00:07:00.100 --> 00:07:02.680 that they actually reached the water table 00:07:02.680 --> 00:07:04.900 far beneath the surface of the earth. 00:07:05.720 --> 00:07:09.699 And those vines became what is called self-irrigating. 00:07:10.560 --> 00:07:12.699 In other words, they had this resource, 00:07:12.900 --> 00:07:14.960 this reservoir of water 00:07:14.960 --> 00:07:16.920 that they had access to 00:07:16.920 --> 00:07:18.620 regardless of what was happening 00:07:18.620 --> 00:07:20.420 on the top of the earth. 00:07:21.240 --> 00:07:23.000 Whatever was happening up top, 00:07:23.500 --> 00:07:25.180 they could sort of be unfazed by it. 00:07:25.639 --> 00:07:26.600 Is there a drought? 00:07:26.600 --> 00:07:28.740 No problem. 00:07:29.740 --> 00:07:32.220 Is there incredible intense heat? 00:07:32.879 00:07:47.460 William Farley provides this image 00:07:47.460 --> 00:07:49.660 because it reminds us of what, in fact, 00:07:49.720 --> 00:07:52.700 the Christian life should be like as we live it. 00:07:52.699 --> 00:07:57.579 We should have this deep reservoir of resources, 00:07:57.779 --> 00:08:02.139 a separate source of hope and peace and joy. 00:08:02.500 --> 00:08:04.360 We should have that independent 00:08:04.360 --> 00:08:06.259 of what's happening today. 00:08:06.779 --> 00:08:09.279 We have that as it transcends 00:08:09.279 --> 00:08:13.519 whatever the events are of this day this is more aspiration than reality for most of us. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:38.519 We live lives riddled with fear and anxiety and greed. 00:08:39.659 --> 00:08:42.799 Our hearts ride the roller coaster 00:08:42.799 --> 00:08:48.120 of success and failure and wealth and poverty 00:08:48.120 --> 00:08:50.379 and praise and criticism and status 00:08:50.379 --> 00:08:52.879 and loss and recognition. 00:08:56.219 --> 00:08:58.240 The churches in Asia Minor and Turkey 00:08:58.240 --> 00:08:59.559 who are receiving Peter's letter 00:08:59.559 --> 00:09:01.639 also know what it's like to be rattled 00:09:01.639 --> 00:09:03.719 by the circumstances around them. 00:09:05.019 --> 00:09:06.259 And so Peter writes to them 00:09:06.259 --> 00:09:09.120 to remind them of the great reservoir 00:09:09.120 --> 00:09:11.500 that's provided by Christ's resurrection. 00:09:11.500 --> 00:09:13.639 He writes to remind them 00:09:13.639 --> 00:09:15.340 that they have a source, in fact, 00:09:15.379 --> 00:09:16.940 of hope and peace and joy 00:09:16.940 --> 00:09:20.399 that is tied beyond this world. 00:09:21.539 --> 00:09:23.320 He raises the question for them, 00:09:23.379 --> 00:09:24.679 the same question that we have, 00:09:25.460 --> 00:09:30.740 where is it that we can get unshakable hope? 00:09:33.360 --> 00:09:35.220 Christian, how can you have 00:09:35.220 --> 00:09:40.700 a deep reservoir untouched by this world? 00:09:41.500 --> 00:09:43.360 How can you have a root 00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:46.139 that goes 30 to 40 feet deep? 00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:48.840 Well, Peter points us 00:09:48.840 --> 00:09:52.639 to the benefits of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:09:52.879 --> 00:09:56.720 And he does that here in verses 3 and 4. 00:09:57.679 --> 00:09:58.840 He tells us, verse 3, 00:09:58.960 --> 00:10:00.960 we've been born again to a living hope 00:10:00.960 --> 00:10:03.679 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ 00:10:03.679 --> 00:10:06.679 from the dead to an inheritance. 00:10:06.679 --> 00:10:11.539 In other words, Jesus' resurrection means 00:10:11.539 --> 00:10:13.120 that if you are a Christian, 00:10:13.439 --> 00:10:15.799 you have a great inheritance. 00:10:16.959 --> 00:10:20.959 There is something that is in the future for you 00:10:20.959 --> 00:10:24.459 that you do not experience in the present. 00:10:25.919 --> 00:10:28.120 And so Peter gives us the simple principle 00:10:28.120 --> 00:10:30.120 that I mentioned during our confession of faith, 00:10:30.199 --> 00:10:30.779 which is this, 00:10:30.779 --> 00:10:33.679 whatever we believe about the future 00:10:33.679 --> 00:10:38.100 dramatically affects how we live in the present. 00:10:39.000 --> 00:10:40.000 Imagine, for example, 00:10:40.100 --> 00:10:41.179 you have two people, 00:10:41.299 --> 00:10:42.519 they're virtually identical. 00:10:43.139 --> 00:10:45.439 Both of them are living in great poverty. 00:10:46.839 --> 00:10:49.519 One of them has no hope 00:10:49.519 --> 00:10:50.779 of that poverty ever ending. 00:10:50.779 --> 00:10:54.779 The other one knows 00:10:54.779 --> 00:10:56.339 that there is a relative 00:10:56.339 --> 00:10:59.259 who has named them in their will. 00:11:00.620 --> 00:11:03.939 And this relative is decades older than them. 00:11:04.600 --> 00:11:07.139 They know the amount that's coming to them. 00:11:07.579 --> 00:11:10.000 And so as they live in the present, 00:11:10.419 --> 00:11:12.000 they have great hope in the future. 00:11:12.779 --> 00:11:14.959 They don't give in to apostle Paul tells us in Romans chapter eight 00:12:11.960 --> 00:12:14.680 that we are fellow heirs with Jesus Christ, 00:12:14.679 --> 00:12:17.319 meaning that whatever Christ's inheritance is, 00:12:17.379 --> 00:12:19.219 whatever it is he earns and receives, 00:12:19.739 --> 00:12:22.539 those things are true of us as well. 00:12:23.439 --> 00:12:25.719 And what is it that Christ accomplishes 00:12:25.719 --> 00:12:26.799 in his death and resurrection? 00:12:27.099 --> 00:12:28.559 Well, it's the defeat of sin. 00:12:29.099 --> 00:12:30.620 It's the defeat of death. 00:12:31.319 --> 00:12:32.679 And so this inheritance, 00:12:32.679 --> 00:12:35.959 it encompasses all of those things that are coming 00:12:35.959 --> 00:12:38.399 when we see death and sin 00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:41.139 finally put under the ground. 00:12:41.139 --> 00:12:43.779 It means the new heavens and the new earth. 00:12:44.240 --> 00:12:45.740 It's part of our future inheritance. 00:14:09.919 There is some sense 00:14:09.919 --> 00:14:12.079 in which the mountains and the trees 00:14:12.079 --> 00:14:14.259 cannot wait for Jesus to come back 00:14:14.259 --> 00:14:18.919 because there will be no more sickness, 00:14:19.399 --> 00:14:20.360 no more disease. 00:14:22.279 --> 00:14:25.579 Your bodies will work perfectly. 00:14:25.580 --> 00:14:29.660 The earth will be
