irreligious people if they know what the word blessed means, I think most people are going to say yes. 00:00:53.640 --> 00:01:04.620 But then I think if you ask them a follow-up question, if you ask them to give their definition of what it means to be blessed, then I think people would actually struggle to do that. 00:01:04.920 --> 00:01:11.799 I think people would kind of lurch in fits and starts and struggle to actually put words of definition around that idea of blessed. 00:01:11.799 --> 00:01:32.500 But as we just heard from each of these readings, the notion of blessing, though it might be foggy to us, is crucial to understanding the right direction of human living according to the prophet Jeremiah, according to the psalmist, and according even, as we heard, to Jesus himself. 00:01:32.500 --> 00:01:41.719 And so I'd like us to focus in on Psalm 1, and I think that's the way that we get into this gift of what it means to be blessed. 00:01:42.079 --> 00:01:48.280 And we can wrap our minds and our hearts around what it means to be blessed by looking closely at Psalm 1. 00:01:48.799 --> 00:01:56.900 And I think one of the angles that we have to take in order to wrap our minds and our hearts around this gift that God is giving to us, inviting us into, 00:01:57.379 --> 00:02:00.760 is to shift the angle on the question of blessed. 00:02:00.760 --> 00:02:04.760 If you ask someone to define blessed, I think people would struggle. 00:02:04.880 --> 00:02:09.920 But if you ask someone to define the good life, then I think you'd get answers. 00:02:10.819 --> It's talking about living in this realm of congratulations because the picture painted in Psalm 1 is a picture of blessing understood as inhabiting and walking in the good life according to God. anyone who has the humility to take up instruction into the good life, 00:03:22.139 --> 00:03:31.680 Psalm 1 makes it abundantly clear that immediately the way into this good life requires that you 00:04:15.240 Throughout the Psalm, there's a contrast that comes in pairs. 00:04:15.240 --> 00:04:21.340 There's the contrast between the two counsels, the counsel of the wicked or the counsel of like chaff in the wind. 00:04:32.519 --> 00:04:37.579 And then two ultimate outcomes, divine embrace or divine rejection. 00:04:37.579 --> 00:04:44.139 This sort of instruction, again, is a gift to us because we have to be honest, 00:04:44.219 --> 00:04:52.399 there are a lot of competing ideas inside of us and around us as to what makes up the good life. 00:04:53.219 --> 00:04:56.740 And those ideas are at war, internally and externally. 00:04:57.740 --> 00:05:02.339 If you don't believe me, just think over the course of your own life. 00:05:02.339 --> 00:05:08.619 How often has your conflicting. 00:05:29.459 --> 00:05:32.299 They're all around us, inside us, internally and externally. 00:05:32.819 --> 00:05:36.519 And what God is giving to us through Scripture, through Psalm 1, of the wicked that Psalm 1 describes, 00:05:58.660 --> 00:06:02.480 it can really be boiled down to thinking that the good life is found through my way, 00:06:02.840 --> 00:06:06.140 their way, or any way except God's way. 00:06:06.139 --> 00:06:13.120 And it's easy, I think, for us, maybe if you're a person that's been around church for a while, 00:06:13.539 --> 00:06:17.240 and even if you're not, it's easy to think that God is giving us instruction 00:06:17.240 --> 00:06:21.860 to just sort of avoid the big sins, the big problems, the big blunders, 00:06:22.259 --> 00:06:24.959 violence, theft, adultery, murder. 00:06:25.419 --> 00:06:28.740 Sure, that's part of the counsel of the wicked, but it's really not the full picture. 00:06:28.740 --> 00:06:31.199 Listen again to what the psalmist says. 00:06:31.939 --> 00:06:37.019 The psalmist says that the flourishing person does not walk, does not sit, does not stand 00:06:37.019 --> 00:06:40.480 in this pattern of wickedness, scoffing, and sin. 00:06:40.600 --> 00:06:45.000 And all of those verbs describe not just isolated, big, one-time acts, 00:06:45.220 --> 00:06:49.639 but a progression, a pattern of living, rooted in ungodliness, 00:06:50.079 --> 00:06:52.100 rooting in scoffing, rooted in sin, 00:06:52.100 --> 00:06:58.760 rooted in this idea that the good life and life itself is not governed by God, 00:06:58.860 --> 00:07:03.280 but ultimately is governed by us through the rejection of him. 00:07:04.180 --> 00:07:06.900 That, at bottom, is the counsel of the wicked. 00:07:08.640 --> 00:07:13.580 And so to more than hedonism. 00:08:52.899 --> 00:08:54.820 It's nothing more than doing whatever you want 00:08:54.820 --> 00:08:57.879 and then feeling the guilt that weighs on your conscience. 00:08:57.879 --> 00:09:01.960 These ideas of the good life, you have the pleasure, the hedonism, 00:09:02.080 --> 00:09:04.019 you have the nice, clean morality, 00:09:04.220 --> 00:09:06.080 you have the self-driven achievement. 00:09:06.080 --> 00:09:10.639 All of these things actually fall short of the flourishing 00:09:10.639 --> 00:09:12.740 and the gift that God has given to us. 00:09:13.879 --> 00:09:15.759 And Psalm 1 invites us into these things. 00:09:16.860 --> 00:09:19.259 Jeremiah the prophet tells us that these options, 00:09:19.379 --> 00:09:22.120 the good life, simply according to our understanding, 00:09:22.340 --> 00:09:23.740 flourishing according to our way, 00:09:24.100 --> 00:09:25.980 it really is not an option. 00:09:26.100 --> 00:09:27.000 It's a dead end. 00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:29.460 Jeremiah, as we heard earlier, he says this, 00:09:29.940 --> 00:09:30.840 thus says the Lord, 00:09:30.840 --> 00:09:33.740 Cursed is the man who trusts in man, 00:09:33.820 --> 00:09:35.220 who makes flesh his strength, 00:09:35.300 --> 00:09:38.180 whose heart turns away from the Lord. 00:09:39.420 --> 00:09:40.840 Okay, so now what? 00:09:43.540 --> 00:09:46.060 Well, again, the psalm simplifies things for us. 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:48.180 We can walk, sit, stand, 00:09:48.759 --> 00:09:51.200 the counsel of the ungodly with all of its variations, 00:09:51.720 --> 00:09:55.240 or we can get on the other highway and seek the good life 00:09:55.240 --> 00:09:58.740 through delighting in the Lord and his law and his counsel. 00:09:59.600 --> 00:10:01.620 And Psalm 1 tells us that the good life of flourishing 00:10:01.620 --> 00:10:04.960 is not exclusively self-governed nor governed by others, 00:10:05.060 --> 00:10:08.620 but it is governed by the good and gracious God 00:10:08.620 --> 00:10:10.700 who has made us and redeems us. 00:10:11.720 --> 00:10:13.560 And that language of governed, I think, is important. 00:10:13.740 --> 00:10:16.399 It's why --> 00:10:38.399 says the psalmist. 00:10:39.120 --> 00:10:40.740 So, friends, this is important. 00:10:41.659 --> 00:10:44.460 There is no path to the good life apart from instruction, 00:10:45.240 --> 00:10:47.059 apart from a way, apart from a law, 00:10:47.059 --> 00:10:49.039 apart from a guide, apart from a Lord. 00:10:49.039 --> 00:10:52.139 And so, friends, you will take counsel.
