in and understand very carefully 00:09:58.799 --> 00:10:08.019 that this portion has been given to us to confirm the ability of Christ to save anyone, including me. 00:10:09.419 --> 00:10:10.500 Let's look at the summary. 00:10:11.179 --> 00:10:17.599 Recognize here, first of all, that John 13 is actually the beginning of a seven-chapter study 00:10:17.599 --> 00:10:21.399 of the last few hours of the Lord Jesus' life before the cross. 00:10:21.399 --> 00:10:30.399 We're going to hear in these chapters Jesus teach on the relationship of believers to him as the vine. 00:10:31.059 --> 00:10:37.419 We're going to hear him teach an extensive portion in relationship to the ministry of the Holy Spirit 00:10:37.419 --> 00:10:39.480 in the life of the New Testament believer, 00:10:39.600 --> 00:10:43.319 a very significant part that we're going to really enjoy and be enriched by. 00:10:43.320 --> 00:10:49.100 We're also going to be ushered in in John chapter 17 to listen to the Lord Jesus as he prays for us, 00:10:49.440 --> 00:10:50.260 prays for his own. 00:10:51.460 --> 00:10:55.240 John 13 actually also comes at the end of the Passover meal 00:10:55.240 --> 00:10:59.780 that Jesus had eaten with his disciples on the night that he was betrayed. 00:10:59.779 --> 00:11:06.079 And as you look at verse 18 on, what you also understand is that in this context, 00:11:06.240 --> 00:11:11.779 Jesus revealed that he knew who was going to betray him in accordance with the Old Testament passage. 00:11:12.839 --> 00:11:16.399 In Psalm 41, verse 9, the statement of the psalmist is this, 00:11:16.500 --> 00:11:21.100 that there would be someone who would betray Christ who had eaten his bread. 00:11:22.419 --> 00:11:28.720 And in saying that, he was referring to someone close that was by Jesus and part of the inner circle. 00:11:28.720 --> 00:11:33.860 So as you look at this passage, understand several significant things have happened. 00:11:34.220 --> 00:11:36.500 For one, he'd already instituted the Lord's table. 00:11:37.379 --> 00:11:43.560 And I believe that Judas had joined at taking the bread or had joined in in taking the bread in the cup. 00:11:43.920 --> 00:11:50.759 I confess that the idea can prove to be a little unsettling to stop and think that Judas had been at the table. 00:11:51.519 --> 00:11:52.840 He had had the bread in the cup. 00:11:52.840 --> 00:12:02.700 And particularly if you are of the inaccurate persuasion that communion has anything whatsoever to do with your salvation. 00:12:03.740 --> 00:12:05.960 Taking communion doesn't get you to heaven. 00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:12.580 Sinners can take communion, and Judas is the perfect illustration of that happening. 00:12:13.160 --> 00:12:16.200 In order to confirm that truth, keep your finger in John. 00:12:16.200 --> 00:12:17.240 We're coming right back. 00:12:17.700 --> 00:12:23.300 But I want you to turn to Luke chapter 22, and let me just read verse 19 through 23. 00:12:23.460 --> 00:12:27.040 The reason that I say Judas took the Lord's table. 00:12:28.900 --> 00:12:32.500 And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, supped, saying, 00:12:39.700 --> 00:12:42.160 This cup is poured out for you. 00:12:42.159 --> 00:12:44.419 It is the new covenant in my blood. 00:12:44.539 --> 00:12:50.000 But behold, the hand of want you to understand that not only had Jesus instituted the Lord's table, 00:13:02.699 --> 00:13:04.019 and Judas had been part of that, 00:13:04.219 --> 00:13:07.059 but we also know that he had washed the disciples' feet. 00:13:07.059 --> 00:13:14.039 And so you can understand that these two powerful illustrations of the heart of Christ 00:13:14.039 --> 00:13:18.459 must have weighed on the heart of every one of the disciples 00:13:18.459 --> 00:13:22.259 when Jesus said what he did there in verse 18 in John chapter 3. 00:13:22.659 --> 00:13:26.299 I am not speaking of all of you. 00:13:27.819 --> 00:13:29.359 So there he makes that statement. 00:13:29.360 --> 00:13:35.440 And we have to understand that Judas was just as close to Jesus in the proximity 00:13:35.440 --> 00:13:38.139 as Peter, James, and John, and all the rest. 00:13:38.279 --> 00:13:43.940 In fact, there are those who would say that Judas actually was sitting on the left hand of Jesus. 00:13:44.899 --> 00:13:49.240 Remember, he just dipped the bread in the sauce and handed it to him. 00:13:49.960 --> 00:13:52.259 John was on the right hand, Judas on the left. 00:13:52.259 --> 00:13:58.080 And here we find this moment of betrayal in the journey of the Lord Jesus to the cross 00:13:58.080 --> 00:14:03.240 is set out for us here in rather significant proportion 00:14:03.240 --> 00:14:10.200 for us to really pay attention to Judas as a classic illustration of what a sinner is really like. 00:14:11.480 --> 00:14:15.639 Now, I want you to stop for a moment and just really consider the sober reality 00:14:15.639 --> 00:14:17.860 of what Judas was going to do in just a moment 00:14:17.860 --> 00:14:21.700 in order to understand the issues that are in hand. 00:14:22.120 --> 00:14:24.940 Turn forward just a little bit over to Acts chapter 2. 00:14:25.779 --> 00:14:27.779 Acts chapter 2, verse 22. 00:14:32.580 --> 00:14:39.279 We're looking at a passage where the apostle, Peter, is there, 00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:48.379 Men of Israel, hear these words. 00:14:48.539 --> 00:14:53.579 Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs 00:14:53.579 --> 00:14:55.919 that God did through him in your midst. 00:14:56.039 --> 00:15:03.819 As you yourselves know, this Jesus delivered up according to the definite plan 00:15:03.819 --> 00:15:09.879 and foreknowledge of God you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 00:15:09.879 --> 00:15:17.860 God raised him up, losing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 00:15:18.620 --> 00:15:26.080 So here we are in the passage in John chapter 13, and I want you to understand that what the setting is, 00:15:26.120 --> 00:15:34.659 is here is Jesus, moments before the cross, ministering for one last time to the principal illustration 00:15:34.659 --> 00:15:37.039 of what a sinful heart is like. 00:15:37.039 --> 00:15:43.579 You recognize that in this passage in verse 18, Jesus predicted his betrayal by a disciple, 00:15:44.279 --> 00:15:46.500 and Jesus even pointed out his betrayer. 00:15:47.199 --> 00:15:50.559 Now let me make one more observation before we actually get into the text itself. 00:15:50.559 --> 00:15:54.699 The practical question is this, is why is this here? 00:15:55.839 --> 00:15:57.339 Why is this here? 00:15:58.099 --> 00:16:04.739 In fact, I would encourage you to ask that question to yourself often when you are having your own personal devotions. 00:16:05.059 --> 00:16:07.399 How many of you know what it is to 00:16:56.359 In Romans chapter 15, it says, 00:16:56.659 --> 00:16:59.099 These things are written that you might have hope in the Scriptures. 00:16:59.599 --> 00:17:01.919 And so when I look at the illustration of Judas, 00:17:02.259 --> 00:17:08.740 I am reminded that Jesus, in His unfailing love for Judas, pursued Him to the end. 00:17:08.740 --> 00:17:14.640 And I am thankful that in every gospel opportunity that I have been given in my life, 00:17:14.799 --> 00:17:19.620 I know for a reason, I know with confidence, that Jesus can save that person. 00:17:20.120 --> 00:17:23.480 Not only we are looking, and I remind you, Judas is the typical sinner. 00:18:20.259 --> 00:18:26.700 I want you to look now, you're in John chapter 13, but look there at verse 21. 00:18:26.879 --> 00:18:31.000 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in His spirit. 00:18:31.920 --> 00:18:35.759 He had identified the reality that His betrayer was at the table with Him, 00:18:35.759 --> 00:19:27.919 that he'd been a disciple and use that as a backdrop against the reality of his eventual 00:19:27.919 --> 00:19:30.139 betrayal of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:19:31.019 --> 00:19:33.099 Christ. 00:27:57.780 --> 00:28:04.759 Most of the people that I have the privilege of sharing the gospel with, when we really get started with it and I ask them the question, why should God let you read it for you again. 00:31:07.619 --> 00:31:11.899 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in His spirit. 00:31:11.900 --> 00:31:23.840 Now, for the most part, the picture that we get of Jesus as the Scriptures unfold is of a wonderful man, 00:31:24.720 --> 00:31:35.480 the Son of God, marching deliberately towards the cross with confidence every step of the mission and outcome of what He was going to be engaged in. 00:31:35.519 --> 00:31:35.980 Isn't that right? 00:31:35.980 --> 00:31:40.120 For the most part, we don't see a lot of emotional turmoil. 00:31:40.559 --> 00:31:43.319 And we know He was angry when He cleansed the temple. 00:31:44.240 --> 00:31:52.779 But how many of you have just been overwhelmed on occasion when you stop and think of how He dealt with the disciples over and over again when they were so immature? 00:31:53.900 --> 00:31:55.279 How many of you get tired of being a parent? 00:31:56.279 --> 00:31:57.440 You know, it's like, not me. 00:31:57.660 --> is in the face of the cross, in the face of His betrayer. 00:32:09.079 --> 00:32:10.680 It says He was troubled with spirit. 00:32:12.920 --> 00:32:14.859 He'd wept over Jerusalem. 00:32:16.759 --> 00:32:19.180 He'd been grieved at the hardness of the Pharisees' hearts. 00:32:19.259 --> 00:32:24.399 But in particular, here He is right on the cusp of His betrayal and His crucifixion. 00:32:24.480 --> 00:32:26.259 It says He was troubled of heart. 00:32:26.339 --> 00:32:26.659 Why? 00:32:26.660 --> 00:32:32.220 For one, I have to think that Jesus was troubled by the blind rebellion of sin. 00:34:14.679 How many of you have had that afterthought, after you've committed a sin and then endured the consequences and the Spirit of God had worked to bring about a sense of conviction, the first side of this, I really didn't think very much about that. 00:34:30.539 --> 00:34:37.960 And here is Jesus looking at Judas and he says, man, look at the vileness and the hardness of Judas' heart willingly doing this. 00:34:40.480 --> 00:34:44.180 Jesus also had to be troubled by the eternal judgment of sin. 00:34:45.480 --> 00:34:50.240 I don't want you to turn there for a moment, but I 00:35:06.559 --> 00:35:13.500 God grieves at how many of you as a parent have enjoyed taking your son up to the upper room. 00:35:13.579 --> 00:35:14.379 You take him to the bedroom. 00:35:14.479 --> 00:36:34.559 The prospect of being the sin bearer and suffering the judgment of God 00:36:34.559 --> 00:36:44.820 and being separated for a time from the Father had to weigh on him as he sat by the 00:37:36.739 and when the family invites me to preach that sermon 00:37:36.739 --> 00:37:40.599 my heart's broken. 00:37:42.119 --> 00:37:45.599 I don't mind telling them that I have a burden on my heart 00:37:45.599 --> 00:37:49.419 because I don't know for certain the eternal destiny of that individual 00:37:49.420 --> 00:37:53.639 and you know apart from the grace of Christ and the work of God 00:37:53.639 --> 00:37:56.659 any person who doesn't come to Christ 00:37:56.659 --> 00:38:01.480 it has to be profoundly troubling to the soul of the person who knows the Lord Jesus. 00:38:04.139
