with the miami dolphins was interviewed a number of years ago now by newsweek media 00:00:26.899 --> 00:00:32.339 asking him specifically one of one of the questions they asked him was what motivated him 00:00:32.339 --> 00:00:38.200 to go to university and to study university and eventually took him down the line of 00:00:38.200 --> 00:00:43.379 becoming a footballer he said and his answer was really interesting he says my father 00:00:43.379 --> 00:00:51.259 and my uncle were human cannonballs in the carnivals and my father said to me one day son either go to 00:00:51.259 --> 00:00:56.579 university or become a human cannonball and he said then one day while i was working out the 00:00:56.579 --> 00:01:04.359 decision which way to go he said my uncle was shot out of the cannon missed good reason a good motive uh um there are motive however is one of those strange things to 00:01:19.039 --> 00:01:25.200 work out because often motives are mixed uh and even for the christian in fact probably and especially 00:01:25.200 --> 00:01:30.840 for the christian for instance what has motivated you this morning to tune into uh this service 00:01:30.840 --> 00:01:37.659 uh what motivates you as a christian to do uh spiritual disciplines why read your bible why pray 00:01:37.659 --> 00:01:44.680 what motivates you to give of your resources what motivates you to serve other people what motivates you to 00:01:44.680 --> 00:01:54.379 show mercy and as we launch out into this uh season of mission month and thinking about sharing the hope 00:01:54.379 --> 00:02:00.560 that we have in jesus the very first place you want to start is what is our motive to do such things 00:02:00.560 --> 00:02:08.219 and this is really really really important for us to wrestle with as we as christians and as a church 00:02:08.219 --> 00:02:13.740 as we seek to love the vulnerable and the needy of our community we love and the compassion the mercy of 00:02:13.740 --> 00:02:20.560 jesus christ what is the motive for us doing so so if you've got the st paul's app open right now 00:02:20.560 --> 00:02:24.340 you'll see i've got three points i want to go through the motive for sharing mercy 00:02:24.340 --> 00:02:33.000 uh receiving hope leads to sharing hope and awakening to a life of sharing hope so here it is in a nutshell 00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:41.879 our motive is in a nutshell before we launch into the rest of the today uh god impoverished his son 00:02:41.879 --> 00:02:54.000 jesus christ on a cross so that all of his riches and health and righteousness and life could be given 00:02:54.000 --> 00:03:02.319 to us those who trust in him that's it in a nutshell 2 corinthians chapter 5 verse 21 in the new testament 00:03:02.319 --> 00:03:08.639 reveals this mercy transaction so clearly it says god made him talking about jesus 00:03:08.639 --> 00:03:18.119 god made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him jesus we might become the righteousness 00:03:18.119 --> 00:03:27.299 of god a couple of chapters later in 2 corinthians uh it's stated in pure economic terms for you know 00:03:27.299 --> 00:03:37.579 the grace of our lord jesus christ that though he was rich yet for your sakes he became poor so that you 00:03:37.580 --> 00:03:46.860 through his poverty might become rich the foundational core element of the christian faith 00:03:46.860 --> 00:03:54.300 is that though poor all of humanity were being made rich through the mercy of god we were living in a 00:03:54.300 --> 00:04:03.500 rubbish tip we by and by his grace god has clothed us with kingly robes and made us to sit down at his 00:04:03.500 --> 00:04:13.080 royal banquet table god's grace has a powerful impact in every part of your life his grace 00:04:13.080 --> 00:04:23.019 changes everything a person who knows that they have received mercy while an undeserving enemy of god 00:04:23.019 --> 00:04:30.160 will have a heart of love and mercy and compassion for the most ungrateful and the difficult and the 00:04:30.160 --> 00:04:38.880 unlovely of society this is in in absolute nutshell when a christian sees 00:04:38.880 --> 00:04:47.120 alcoholics prisoners prostitutes drug addicts homeless refugees the broker the destitute of 00:04:47.120 --> 00:04:50.379 society of society they know they're looking in a mirror 00:04:50.379 --> 00:04:58.180 it is irrelevant if that particular christian has spent their entire life 00:04:58.180 --> 00:05:01.079 as a respectable middle class person 00:05:01.079 --> 00:05:06.900 they look at the broken and they say in the depths of their hearts 00:05:06.900 --> 00:05:14.780 spiritually that's me i i i was that person even if physically and socially i've never been where they 00:05:14.780 --> 00:05:23.620 are right now they are in desperate need of mercy and i spiritually was in desperate need of god's mercy to me 00:05:23.620 --> 00:05:31.780 god gives mercy to the ungrateful and the wicked and that is what we were 00:05:31.780 --> 00:05:39.180 and the powerful effect of his mercy and his grace in us is that we become 00:05:39.180 --> 00:05:47.540 like the god of mercy and we show it to others so i want to unpack that that's in a nutshell i want to 00:05:47.540 --> 00:05:55.700 unpack that as we launch into matthew 18 if you've got that bible that parable in front of you helps us to show 00:05:55.700 --> 00:06:00.420 helps us see how a god's grace to us motivates a life of grace 00:06:00.420 --> 00:06:09.939 now just before this in matthew 18 the parable there jesus been talking about how to handle things 00:06:09.939 --> 00:06:16.259 when someone sins against you and so peter his apostle asks him a question lord how many times 00:06:16.259 --> 00:06:20.680 shall i forgive my brother and sister who sins against me 00:06:20.680 --> 00:06:24.680 he says and then he goes and answers his own question up to seven times 00:06:24.680 --> 00:06:29.319 now the attitude of the rabbis uh jewish rabbis at that time 00:06:29.319 --> 00:06:32.980 was that you would forgive your brother no more than three times 00:06:32.980 --> 00:06:35.480 you know three strikes and then you're out 00:06:35.480 --> 00:06:40.439 and so peter at this point is probably thinking well i'll go a bit further than that 00:06:40.439 --> 00:06:45.640 uh and you know jesus should be pretty happy with that that response 00:06:45.640 --> 00:06:50.340 but jesus gives a stunning response in verse 22 00:06:50.340 --> 00:06:55.720 i tell you not seven times but 77 times 00:06:55.720 --> 00:07:04.480 now some commentators say that he he means literally 77 times others say well actually in fact he meant seven 00:07:04.480 --> 00:07:11.180 by 70 times he means 490 times the reality is either either alternative 00:07:11.180 --> 00:07:13.939 really misses the point of what jesus says 00:07:13.939 --> 00:07:21.100 because to try and calculate 77 or 590 is to go back to the pedantic calculation 00:07:21.100 --> 00:07:24.460 of forgiveness and mercy that jesus is rejecting at this point 00:07:24.460 --> 00:07:28.520 forgiveness and mercy is unlimited that's his point 00:07:28.519 --> 00:07:34.919 that is what god's grace towards us is it is unlimited 00:07:34.919 --> 00:07:42.039 and to make the point clear jesus then launches into this parable 00:07:42.039 --> 00:07:46.620 there's a man here's a character there's a man who owes a king 00:07:46.620 --> 00:07:53.879 10 000 bags of gold it was a debt that according to verse 25 of matthew 18 00:07:53.879 --> 00:07:59.519 was not able to be paid now that's an understatement 00:07:59.519 --> 00:08:05.339 the original language refers to a debt as 10 000 talents 00:08:05.339 --> 00:08:10.620 now the talent was the highest unit of currency 00:08:10.620 --> 00:08:15.980 and 10 000 was the highest greek numeral 00:08:15.980 --> 00:08:23.000 so the idea here of this is that it's meant to convey the largest sum imaginable 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:26.980 something what we might say it's just like squillions of dollars or something like that 00:08:26.980 --> 00:08:33.740 in fact the debt was a thousand times to get this 00:08:33.740 --> 00:08:35.820 in the this is first century palestine 00:08:35.820 --> 00:08:39.480 this particular debt was a thousand times 00:08:39.480 --> 00:08:45.860 the annual revenue of galilee judea samaria and idumea combined 00:08:45.860 --> 00:08:51.879 it's like taking all foreign debt globally 00:08:51.879 --> 00:08:56.019 and lumping on the responsibility of one human being 00:08:56.019 --> 00:08:57.379 to pay it back 00:08:57.379 --> 00:09:01.100 totally beyond imagination 00:09:01.100 --> 00:09:04.539 for those who first heard this 00:09:04.539 --> 00:09:07.500
