00:02:17.360 And that's why we have the book of Titus. 00:02:17.360 --> 00:02:24.400 Titus is about making disciples on the island of Crete. 00:02:25.660 --> 00:02:27.480 Establishing a local church surface looks like future travel plans. 00:05:14.799 --> 00:05:21.659 So in verse 12, Paul tells Titus to meet him in Nicopolis, which is about 200 miles north of Athens from Greece. 00:05:22.319 --> 00:05:31.819 And before Titus is to go, he needs to wait for either Artemis or Tychicus to arrive in Crete to release him to go to Nicopolis. 00:05:31.819 --> 00:05:37.319 Paul hadn't decided who he's going to send, Artemis or Tychicus. 00:05:37.480 --> 00:05:38.680 He hadn't decided yet. 00:05:38.980 --> 00:05:41.699 But he said, when they get there, meet me in Nicopolis. 00:05:43.219 --> 00:05:51.279 And why Titus had to wait for one of these men to arrive was to care for all these young churches on the island of Crete, 00:05:51.680 --> 00:05:52.839 filled with young believers. 00:05:52.839 --> 00:05:58.839 And in verse 13, Paul tells Titus to do everything he can do to speed Zenos the lawyer, 00:05:59.299 --> 00:06:04.439 probably a lawyer of Greco-Roman law, and Apollos on their way. 00:06:04.979 --> 00:06:12.199 Now, in this section, this is the only place in our New Testaments where we hear the names Artemis and Zenos. 00:06:12.379 --> 00:06:15.079 They don't show up any place else in the New Testament. 00:06:15.079 --> 00:06:22.740 Both Tychicus and Apollos, these guys were regular preachers of the gospel in and around the Mediterranean basin. 00:06:23.599 --> 00:06:24.560 They were well known. 00:06:25.740 --> 00:06:31.399 And what Paul tells Titus to do is, hey, speed Zenos and Apollos on their way. 00:06:31.539 --> 00:06:32.819 See that they lack nothing. 00:06:32.819 --> 00:06:44.699 It was probably by the hands of Zenos and Apollos that Titus and these churches in Crete received this letter from Paul. 00:06:45.519 --> 00:06:50.279 And what Paul is telling them is, telling Titus is, hey, these guys are coming through. 00:06:51.259 --> 00:06:55.139 Make sure you give them everything they need to continue on their way. 00:06:55.759 --> 00:07:31.400 And you're like, oh, there's flight 737 going to, you know, Boise, Idaho. 00:07:31.800 --> 00:07:32.620 Great, yeah. 00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:41.939 We can read these verses and we can read them as kind of the arrival and departure boards in an airport. 00:07:42.840 --> 00:07:44.319 But there's more going on. 00:07:45.780 --> 00:07:47.160 This is about mission. 00:07:48.300 --> 00:07:52.460 When you see plans, plans reveal purpose. 00:07:52.459 --> 00:07:58.099 Artemis, Titus, Titus, and Paul. 00:07:58.899 --> 00:08:02.939 They were all men who had been saved by the grace of God. 00:08:04.159 --> 00:08:08.039 These men were men who have encountered the living Jesus, 00:08:08.560 --> 00:08:12.120 been forgiven of all their sins, been cleansed, made new, 00:08:12.299 --> 00:08:17.259 and they had devoted themselves to the good works of fulfilling the great commission. 00:08:17.259 --> 00:08:26.379 Zenus and Apollos aren't going on their way somewhere to experience the first century Walt Disney World. 00:08:28.620 --> 00:08:31.259 They're going somewhere to preach the gospel. 00:08:31.259 --> 00:08:39.100 So these travel plans that we're looking at, these are gospel mission plans. 00:08:39.700 --> 00:08:43.139 These are go make disciples of the nation travel plans. 00:08:45.659 --> 00:08:46.960 There's more to the story. 00:08:47.080 --> 00:08:55.439 We learned from 2 Timothy 4 that Tychicus ended up being sent to Ephesus to relieve Timothy. 00:08:55.440 --> 00:08:57.920 So that Timothy could come to Paul. 00:08:59.100 --> 00:09:07.680 Which means it's reasonable to conclude that Paul actually decided to send Artemis to relieve Titus in Crete. 00:09:08.440 --> 00:09:15.780 But we also learned from 2 Timothy 4 that Titus, after going to Nicopolis, ends up in Dalmatia. 00:09:16.360 --> 00:09:18.240 And he's not there to train dogs. 00:09:18.240 --> 00:09:25.919 He's there to proclaim the gospel of God's saving grace, the sound doctrine. 00:09:27.460 --> 00:09:33.399 And in that proclaiming, as those responding, he is to establish them in the grace of God 00:09:33.399 --> 00:09:40.139 and help them to live out this sound doctrine of them to different places for mission purposes to make disciples of the nations. 00:13:43.119 --> 00:13:51.599 Gospel personnel change was a normal part of God's first century mission work. 00:13:52.299 --> 00:13:57.979 And so it's going to be a normal part of God's 21st century mission work. 00:13:57.980 --> 00:14:07.700 Our risen and reigning Lord Jesus Christ will be assigning his 00:20:11.960 --> 00:20:17.299 Titus is a book that emphasizes good works. 00:20:17.299 --> 00:20:23.139 Titus, and before I say anything else, I just need to make sure we're all clear in the room on
