In your name I pray. Amen. So if you'd like to open up with me to begin in Hebrews chapter 00:01:42.560 --> 00:01:53.500 1, we're going to read verses 1 through 3 together. And just as a review, we've talked about the prophet 00:01:53.500 --> 00:02:00.680 that Jesus is fulfilling a four-fold office. First, he is the prophet who brings the Word of God. 00:02:01.560 --> 00:02:09.099 We have a slide up there. The priest brings the presence of God. The king brings the rule of God. 00:02:09.099 --> 00:02:16.180 And the shepherd brings the heart of God. These offices that Christ fulfills are not merely abstract 00:02:16.180 --> 00:02:25.519 concepts, but they are necessary realities. We need Jesus to be the true prophet who brings the Word of 00:02:25.519 --> 00:02:35.299 God perfectly to us, who reveals God to us. We need him to be the true priest who brings God's presence 00:02:35.300 --> 00:02:42.120 to us, who mediates for us, who mediates for us between God and man. And then today we're talking 00:02:42.120 --> 00:02:50.480 about how he is the true king who brings God's rule, who will rule over us. And then next week we'll end 00:02:50.480 --> 00:02:56.760 our Advent series by talking about how Christ is the true shepherd who will bring the heart of God. 00:02:56.759 --> 00:03:05.439 Each Sunday we have opened up with Hebrews 1, 1 through 3, which attributes these offices to Christ. 00:03:06.699 --> 00:03:16.659 And the first point today is that Jesus is the king God appointed. It says in Hebrews 1, 1 through 3, 00:03:16.659 --> 00:03:24.819 long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets. In these last days he has 00:03:24.819 --> 00:03:32.900 spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 00:03:33.319 --> 00:03:40.400 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature. And he upholds the universe by the 00:03:40.400 --> 00:03:46.500 word of his power after making purification for sins. He sat down at the right hand of the majesty, 00:03:46.659 --> 00:03:54.120 on high. Jesus is the divine king whose word creates and sustains the universe. 00:03:55.620 --> 00:04:04.219 You can even just see in the first couple of verses that long ago, in many ways, and in many times, 00:04:04.560 --> 00:04:14.379 God had spoken to his people, to the fathers of the audience of the book of Hebrews, by his prophets. 00:04:14.379 --> 00:04:19.319 So there's this many, many prophets that God has spoken through to give his word. 00:04:20.500 --> 00:04:24.079 And in the last days, he has chosen to speak through his Son. 00:04:25.779 --> 00:04:31.060 His Son does not replace the prophets, but he is the fulfillment of what these prophets were looking 00:04:31.060 --> 00:04:35.219 forward to. And so we only have one word from God, 00:04:35.220 --> 00:04:37.300 Jesus, 00:04:37.300 --> 00:04:40.800 who is now also our king. 00:04:43.220 --> 00:04:45.760 The king that God has appointed is a unique king. 00:04:46.260 --> 00:04:49.360 He is unlike any other king because he actually is 00:04:49.360 --> 00:04:50.380 the word of God. 00:04:51.200 --> 00:04:53.240 The other kings in the Old Testament 00:04:53.240 --> 00:04:55.860 were not able to 00:04:55.860 --> 00:04:59.000 speak God's word, but they actually had to look to the prophets 00:04:59.000 --> 00:05:01.139 to know what God had to say for them. 00:05:01.819 --> 00:05:03.240 But now we have a king 00:05:03.240 --> 00:05:04.839 who also is 00:05:04.839 --> 00:05:06.160 the word of God. 00:05:06.660 --> 00:05:08.199 He is the Son of God. 00:05:10.279 --> 00:05:14.160 Jesus is the fulfillment of what these prophets were looking forward to from the Old Testament. 00:05:14.959 --> 00:05:16.860 Jesus does not just receive
